It could be argued that showing up and sticking the landing are the two most important things, and everything in between is less memorable. Line of Duty, one of the most acclaimed and popular detective series of all time (and the most popular in modern UK history), certainly showed up, hooking a sizable audience from the start. That audience grew over six seasons, but was left befuddled by what many consider to be the show's limp, anticlimactic finale in 2021. Any mention of Line of Duty has included that disappointing caveat ever since. Now, that's all set to change.

Doherty died Saturday. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015; after treatment and several surgeries, she announced in April 2017 that she was in remission. In February 2020, she tearfully revealed on Good Morning America, “I’m stage 4 — my cancer came back,” then said in June 2023 that cancer had spread to her brain.

“I definitely have days where I say, ‘Why me?’ And then I go, ‘Well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do,” she said.

Shannen Doherty credits her passion for acting to her late Little House on the Prairie co-star Michael Landon.

The actress looked back at the early days of her career in Hollywood on a recent episode of the Let’s Be Clear With Shannen Doherty podcast, alongside her mother, Rosa Elizabeth Doherty. At 11 years old, Doherty landed the role of Jenny Wilder on the show’s final season, from 1982-83.

“That show, Little House, shaped me in so many ways and it still is the best experience of my entire career,” the Charmed star said.

The CinemAsia Film Festival in Amsterdam has unveiled titles from seven different Asian countries for its competition section.

The festival will play at the Studio/K, Rialto De Pijp and Rialto Vu venues March 5-10, 2024. The event will close with the out-of-competition screening of “Gaga,” a drama about indigenous communities in Taiwan, directed by Laha Mebow.

“Gaga” documents the challenges faced by a commune after the death of a respected tribal elder who, while alive, had held things together. Following his death problems that emerge include a land dispute, financial difficulties, an unwanted pregnancy and the risk of over-riding ‘Ga Ga’ or old tribal norms. It debuted at the 2022 Golden Horse festival and won the best director and best supporting actress awards. In 2023, it won a trio of awards including best narrative feature at the Taipei Film Festival.

One of the most intriguing, well-accomplished debuts I saw back at New Directors/New Films in 2018 was Yui Kiyohara’s mysterious drama Our House. The Japanese director returned to the festival this year with Remembering Every Night, a serenely beautiful and humorous ode to summer living near Tokyo following the journeys of a few women. Shot by Yukiko Iioka (Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy)––and, like Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Kiyohara is also a student of Kiyoshi Kurosawa––the Berlinale selection was picked up by KimStim for a theatrical release starting September 15th, alongside Our House, at NYC’s Film at Lincoln Center. Ahead of theatrical release, we’re pleased to exclusively debut the first trailer and below.

KimStim is delighted to announce the acquisition of North American rights to Yui Kiyohara's Remembering Every Night: “We were struck by how much this deceptively simple and delicate film could be so mesmerizing, humorous, and moving. It clearly demonstrates that Yui Kiyohara is one of Japanese cinema's rising stars,” states KimStim co-founder Mika Kimoto.

Kimoto negotiated the deal with Chinese sales company Parallax Films's co-founder and head of international sales Cao Liuying. Liuying speaking to Screen for the film's Berlinale bow adds: “It's our goal to work with talents beyond the Chinese-speaking territories. Remembering Every Night will be our attempt to further explore our pan-Asian collaboration.

“Remembering Every Night” is Yui Kiyohara's second feature-length film. The movie was presented in the 2023 “Berlin International Film Festival” Forum section and is currently showing at the Japanese Film Festival “Nippon Connection” in Frankfurt. The very young director had already presented her debut feature film “Our House” at the 2018 Berlinale, a work that also earned her the Grand Prize at the “Pia Film Festival” and the Best Director award at the 2018 “Asian New Talent Awards” in Shanghai.

Remembering Every Night screened at Nippon Connection

From the very first sequences – shot with a fixed camera – of empty streets, trees, the chirping of birds, and shots of anonymous Japanese buildings, the quite lonesome tone of the work is established. The protagonists are three women: one is searching for a job (Kumi Hyodo), another is a gas meter inspector (Minami Oba), and the third (Ai Mikami) is dealing with university studies and the processing of recent grief.

On June 5, Doherty shared a video of her in the hospital with a short caption, “January 9, 2023.” The actress then posted another video on June 6, in which she announced the spread of her cancer and a provided a description of the earlier video.

“On January 5th, my Ct scan showed Mets in my brain. Yesterday’s video was showing the process of getting fitted for the mask which you wear during radiation to your brain.”

Doherty continued in caption, “January 12, the first round of radiation took place. My fear is obvious. I am extremely claustrophobic and there was a lot going on in my life. I am fortunate as I have great doctors like Dr. Amin Mirahdi and the amazing techs at Cedar Sinai.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed alum revealed the news with an Instagram video on Tuesday that showed her receiving the first round of radiation to her brain in January. “My fear is obvious,” Doherty added in a caption. “I am extremely claustrophobic and there was a lot going on in my life.” She went on to thank her doctors and the staff that helped her, “but that fear… The turmoil… the timing of it all… This is what cancer can look like.”

The film Children of the Corn, based on the Stephen King short story, spawned a franchise of considerable durability, but rather dubious quality. The first film was released in 1984 and the series sputtered to a halt in 2018 after the tenth entry, Children of the Corn: Runaway. But nothing ever really dies in the corn and two years later Children of the Corn got its second reboot following the TV version in 2009.

Or rather a reboot was written and directed by Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer who has directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet is no stranger to reboots having written the new versions of Point Break, The Thomas Crown Affair and Total Recall. But after filming it seemed to disappear back into the cornfields for three years of vague mentions of release dates that came and went.

The music world is mourning the loss of another legend.

On Thursday, Jan Dance, the wife of David Crosby, shared the sad news that the musician and founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young has died at age 81.

London Screenings

The London Screenings have revealed its full line-up of distributors, with the likes of Lionsgate and Sony Pictures Television officially joining the winter TV showcase in the U.K.

The Screenings, which will take place from Feb. 27 to March 3, have added Eccho Rights, Newen Connect, Viaplay Content Distribution, Lionsgate and Spt to its ranks. The new additions take the total number of host companies to 26.

ITV Studios has secured sales and pre-sales deals for more than 1,000 hours of content across its catalog of scripted and non-scripted content, ahead of the Asia TV Forum and Market.

“Nolly,” the three-part drama from BAFTA-winning writer Russell T. Davies and produced by Nicola Shindler’s Quay Street Productions, has been acquired by Pumpkin Film in China, Now TV in Hong Kong and Tvnz in New Zealand. Tvnz has has also licensed relationship drama “You & Me,” teen drama “Tell Me Everything,” “The Walk-In,” “The Dry,” “Tom Jones,” season two of “The Tower” and season 4 of “The Bay.”

In Japan, Tfc/Star Channel has licensed World Productions’ International Emmy award-winning “Vigil.” Cineplex in Thailand for TrueVisions has also acquired “Vigil,” along with season 3 of Tall Story Pictures’ “The Bay” and celebrated comedy series “Schitt’s Creek.”

In India, four-part drama “Litvinenko,” starring David Tennant, has been acquired by Viacom18, with Tvod rights going to BookMyShow Stream.

Jury Duty

The jury for the 2023 edition of European Shooting Stars has been unveiled and it includes internationally-recognized directors, producers and actors as well as one of Variety‘s own editors, Leo Barraclough.

The jury, which was selected by European Film Promotion (Efp), will decide which of the 27 actors nominated for the European Shooting Stars will be selected to take part. Of the 27 who were nominated by their national Efp members, 10 will be chosen to go forward.

European Shooting Stars is set to run at the Berlin International Film Festival from Feb. 17-20, 2023. The Efp is made up of film promotion institutes and film centres across Europe.

As well as Variety‘s international features editor Leo Barraclough, the jury includes Oscar-nominated Polish director and screenwriter Jan Komasa, Oscar-nominated Norwegian producer Maria Ekerhovd, Goya-award winning Spanish actor and screenwriter (and former Shooting Star) Veronica Echegui and Dutch casting director Rebecca van Unen.

Exclusive: Death in Paradise producer Red Planet Pictures has struck a deal with ITV’s Our House author Louise Candlish and is seeking more work outside the UK, helped by new owner Asacha Media Group.

The company founded by lauded British screenwriter Tony Jordan, which also makes PBS Masterpiece/BritBox’s Sanditon, is working on a number of projects targeted at non-uk buyers.

Candlish will work with Red Planet’s Our House exec Tom Mullens on TV drama ideas while Red Planet has optioned two further Candlish novels, 2016’s The Swimming Pool and upcoming thriller The Only Suspect, the latter of which will be adapted by Simon Ashdown. Exclusive: Playwright Theresa Rebeck, who created the stage musical-themed NBC series Smash, has joined the real-life Broadway-bound musical adaptation of the 1988 film comedy Working Girl, producers announced today.

Rebeck will write the book of the musical, said producers Robyn Goodman and Josh Fiedler of Aged In Wood Productions and Kumiko Yoshii.

While Rebeck has had four plays produced on Broadway, Working Girl would mark her Broadway debut as a book writer for a musical. As previously announced, Cyndi Lauper is writing the music and lyrics, and Christopher Ashley will direct.

The second series of Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon debuts on PBS Masterpiece Sunday and BritBox Monday but, were it not for a fan-led campaign that the original author would have been proud of, the show could easily have slipped off TV altogether.

A Sanditon Sisterhood campaign kicked into gear when the show was axed by original broadcaster ITV after just one season and, more than a year after the cancellation, Sanditon, which is based on an unfinished Austen manuscript, was revived for a second and third run by co-producer PBS Masterpiece and ITV-owned streamer BritBox.

The Austen-obsessed Sisterhood were energizing, launching a website, Instagram page and even bombarding execs and commissioners with Sanditon gifts including a Saving Sanditon egg box (an oft-quoted line from the show goes “Sanditon will rise from the ashes as sure as eggs are eggs”) and a clutch of Saving Sanditon facemasks.
