After disaster struck the two Independence Day long weekend releases — Aamir Khan’s long-awaited, mega-hyped ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Raksha Bandhan’ — a wag commented that Bollywood has become like the Congress: it has only its past to live on and stares at a dim future, unless a miracle happens.

For Aamir, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has been his worst commercially since his 2000 film ‘Mela’, despite getting a five-day holiday weekend, starting with Raksha Bandhan on August 11 and ending with Independence Day. And it has been his second successive flop after the ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, which bombed despite the additional presence of Amitabh Bachchan.

There seems to be some positive development for the exhibition trade, as some filmmakers are venturing to release their films at the cinema halls. Last year, due to Corona, some of the best release slots were lost. Since then, neither filmmakers nor viewers have come forward to take in a movie at a cinema hall.

Not that any film released since lockdown in cinema halls was withdrawn -- albeit with restrictions -- had what is called face value or promotion. The few films that managed to release were not worth one's while even during normal situation, least of all in Corona time.

Since the cinemas reopened in September last year, films like "Khali Peeli", "Bolo Hau", "Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari", "Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi", "12 'O' Clock", "Madam Chief Minister", "Kaagaz", "Indoo Ki Jawani", "Amma Ki Boli" and a few other such films released in cinema halls. They had...

New Delhi, Nov 6 (Ians) Actor Boman Irani recently pumped in some hope in these gloomy times by singing his own version of a classic song. Although music is not his day job, he says he loves it.

The actor was recently was joined by a choir of schoolgirls when he sang "Over the rainbow", originally rendered by Judy Garland for the 1939 Hollywood classic "The Wizard of Oz".

"'Over the rainbow' is a song that I have been singing ever since I was a kid. I am so glad that people have loved it," Boman told Ians.

This isn't the first time that his fans got to listen to his sonorous voice. Years ago, he sang his version of "Give me some sunshine" from the blockbuster film "3 Idiots", in which he memorably played the strict college principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe.

"I also made Frank Sinatra's 'My way' my own.

Actress Shalini Pandey, who is all set to make her Bollywood debut opposite Ranveer Singh, turned 27 on Wednesday. She hopes that the year ahead turns out to be extraordinary for her.

Shalini shot to fame as Vijay Devarakonda's co-star in the Telugu superhit "Arjun Reddy", which was remade in Bollywod as "Kabir Singh". She will next be seen in "Jayeshbhai Jordaar" opposite Ranveer Singh.

"I hope this new year for me is extraordinary. I know that my film 'Jayeshbhai Jordaar' will release in theatres and I just can't wait for that experience! People will go back to the theatres to watch cinema post the pandemic, and our film will definitely bring them back to the theatres," she said.

"The entire team has really worked hard on this film and it will be great to know what audiences think about our labour of love," Shalini added.
