Perhaps it’s because of his stunning bulky physique or his unparalleled acting and fighting chops, but Henry Cavill absolutely eats it up in the action genre. Over the years since his career started, he has depicted his combat excellence across multiple genres, be it adventure-comedy, mystery, superhero, or even fantasy. The same was the case when he was working on his 2012 action-thriller The Cold Light of Day, which saw Cavill pulling off some really praise-worthy moves but still ended in the ditch as both critics and general audiences failed it. But that didn’t stop the actor from having a ball with the action sequences working with the stuntman while the director worried for his wellbeing.

Night Hunter is a psychological action thriller directed by David Raymond, which sees Cavill taking on the role of a detective in the murky world of child predators, as part of a team looking to track down the man responsible for the kidnapping of the ward of a former judge.

Per Deadline, Ackland's death was announced by his family on Sunday, but no details about a cause or location were given. In a statement, the family said, "With his distinctive voice and commanding presence, Ackland brought a unique intensity and gravitas to his role. He will be remembered as one of Britain’s most talented and beloved actors.” Ackland was 95 years old.

Ackland was born in London in 1928, and he was performing as an actor on stage as a teenager. From there, he would start to pick up roles in movies and TV shows in the 1950s and beyond. Among his many memorable roles is the character Hans, a mentor to Emilio Estevez in the hit 1992 Disney movie The Mighty Ducks. The actor would reprise his role for the 1996 sequel, D3: The Mighty Ducks.

On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.

First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.

Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Bill Hader returns for one final season of Barry and the popular sketch comedy A Black Lady Sketch Show kicks off its fourth season on HBO Max in April 2023. Additional highlights of the streaming service’s April lineup include the debut of Love & Death, a limited series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Patrick Fugit; season two of Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett; and the return of 100 Foot Wave for a second season.

In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. HBO Max offers this description of the fourth and final season’s remaining episodes: “The Titans – with the exception of Gar – are returned to the Temple of Trigon and rush to find Sebastian and Mother Mayhem before Sebastian summons Trigon. Along the way, they come across a prophecy that may require Kory to make a huge sacrifice to save the world.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Hello, everyone! This week’s Blu-ray and DVD offerings are quite an eclectic bunch, as we have a few recent titles coming out on Tuesday, but we also have a few classic horrors from Mexico finally getting a release, which is pretty darned cool. In terms of the newer horrors, Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece Nightmare Alley is heading home to various formats, and if you missed it when it was airing, now you can finally catch up on the Dexter: New Blood revival this week as well. As mentioned, Indicator is showing some love to two classic horror movies from Mexico—La Llorona and The Phantom of the Monastery—on Blu-ray this week, and Richard Elfman’s Modern Vampires is getting the HD treatment, too.

Hulu is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in the month of September — and everything that’s leaving.

Highlights in the new category include Season 2 of “Pen15,” which stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle as their middle school selves, out Sept. 18. Another highlight is the series premiere of “Woke,” inspired by the life and work of American cartoonist Keith Knight. That’s out Sept. 9.

Leaving at the end of the month are movies like “50 First Dates,” “A Mighty Wind,” and “Best in Show.”

As August winds down, it’s time to look ahead to everything that’s hitting the major streaming services in September. As always, there’s an enormous haul of originals and newly licensed titles going up across Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video over the month, including content from every genre out there.

The first day of September brings the usual lengthy list of movies arriving on most of the sites. Just a few of the highlights include all three Back to the Future films returning to Netflix, every entry in the Twilight saga arriving on Hulu and countless iconic movies going up on HBO Max, including Grease, Miss Congeniality and V for Vendetta. Also, Doctor Who fans will want to take note, as the most recent season of the show lands on HBO Max the same day.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when Bruce Willis seemed to give up on trying anything interesting or exciting and decided to follow Nicolas Cage down the rabbit hole into the world of terrible VOD action movies, but the 65 year-old has certainly gone all-in, with his descent into mediocrity coinciding with the most prolific period of his entire career.

If you discount his franchise turns that include playing John McClane for a fifth time in the awful A Good Day to Die Hard and a sixth in The Lego Movie sequel, cameos in the first two Expendables before he was kicked out by Sylvester Stallone after demanding too much money to appear in the third, both installments of the short-lived Red series, a brief role in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and his appearances in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and Glass along with a return in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,...

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.

The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.

Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.

Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

With the streaming wars really starting to heat up now thanks to all the new services that have sprung up over the past few months, it’s more important than ever for the major players to continue delivering truckloads of new content to keep subscribers happy. And thankfully, Hulu intends on doing just that.

Earlier today, the platform announced their September line-up and it’s an exciting mix of films and TV shows covering iconic classics, underrated gems, overlooked projects and true fan favorites. The new film currently being shot by Mabrouk El Mechri - a Les Films du Kiosque production sold by Gaumont – gathers together a cast composed of Sabrina Ouazani, Ramzy Bedia and Eye Haïdara. Having kicked off on 8 June, filming on Kung Fu Zohra by Mabrouk El Mechri is now set to wrap on 31 July at the Épinay Studios. This will be the filmmaker’s 4th feature film following on from Virgil (2005), Jcvd (2008) and the American work The Cold Light of Day (2012). Les Films du Kiosque, the Paris-based production company behind Nicolas Bedos’ Cannes-premiering “La Belle Epoque” and Netflix’ hit original “Family Business,” is set to reteam with Bedos on “Masquarade,” and will produce Mabrouk El Mechri’s “Kung Fu Zohra.”

El Mechri’s film follows Zohra, a young cashier from the suburbs who is being physically abused by her violent husband Omar. Zohra is trying everything she can to shelter her 6-year-old child and sets off to learn how to defend herself. Her life changes after she crosses paths with Chang Sue, a kung fu master who runs the municipal gymnasium. Set to start shooting in March, the film will star Sabrina Ouazani, Ramzy Bedia and Eye Haïdara.

Gaumont has come on board to acquire French distribution and international sales rights to the film.

In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.

The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way...

Exclusive: Chavela Vargas documentary sells to Us and France.

Madrid-based sales agent Latido has scored key territory deals on Chavela, the documentary by Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi which premiered at this week’s Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama strand.

The documentary about iconic Mexican singer Chavela Vargas has gone to Bodega Films in France and The Film Collaborative in the Us. A deal has been closed with Portugal (Leopardo Filmes), and Latido is reporting interest from Israel and Germany.

A bidding war is underway between two companies in Spain, which comes as no surprise considering the popularity of Chavela Vargas’ music in the country. Her songs are closely related to Pedro Almodóvar’s films and the director had personal involvement in the singer’s revival in the later years of her career.

If a mashup of 80s robot flicks Short Circuit and RoboCop sounds like a bad joke, well: almost. Chappie is often risible, but it’s more sad than anything else. Not the good kind of sad: this is not a poignant or touching film, though it clearly hopes to be. No, Chappie makes me sad because the promise that South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp displayed with his brilliant District 9 and which hung over his flawed but still daring followup Elysium is nowhere to be found here.
