Let’s be real, anime fans nowadays are actually savage. No matter if a show is trending or not, someone will always come and say it’s ‘mid,’ trash the pacing or go on a 12-tweet rant about how the manga was ten times better. And it’s not just the controversial stuff, even the greats like One Piece, Demon Slayer, or Attack on Titan get roasted the minute they slip up.

So when a series like The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) comes along and absolutely knocks it out of the park in every category, light novel, manga, and anime, it literally feels like a miracle. I mean, 3-for-3 in this time when everybody’s critiquing everything? That’s wildly uncommon.

The first episode of To Be Hero X made me realize exactly how important it is for any show to start with a bang. What I thought would be just another lackluster animated series ended up becoming a show I am looking forward to the most this season.

From getting rid of age-old anime stereotypes to having well-written female characters, Dandadan does many things right. However, this time around, the discussion is more about the release schedule rather than the subject matter.

The second season of the anime was announced before fans could even recover from the shocking finale of the first one. Having a sequel in sight is a rare experience for many fandoms, who wait years for the subsequent seasons to get announced.

The entire fandom has been speculating what these updates might entail. From reboot adaptations to new merch, all the possibilities have been discussed. The most intriguing, yet unlikely one seems to be a potential spin-off. It is a great way to expand the series while honoring what it has already established.

Released this month, Moonrise, an adventure sci-fi anime, has been one of those hidden gems, sparking mixed reactions among fans. There is no denying that the animation is beautiful; the action scenes are like fireworks or something that pull you in. With such dazzling animation featuring some compelling characters, this anime has the potential to be the next big thing.

But here’s the issue- for all of that, it feels and looks kind of buried. What’s stopping Moonrise from eliciting more hype? Yeah, part of the popularity issue to consider is that Netflix didn’t promote Moonrise very well. But there’s more to the story than poor promotion.

From some questionable storytelling choices to the sheer amount of anime dropping at the same time, there are some reasons why this hidden gem of an anime isn’t shining as brightly as it should.

When Moonrise was originally announced back in 2018, anime fans were hyped. Not only because Wit Studio was involved, but because Hiromu Arakawa, the genius behind Fullmetal Alchemist, was handling the character designs.

That in itself made it seem like we were in for something big. Like, possibly the next big anime classic? Fast forward to 2025 and Moonrise finally drops on Netflix. And well it just sort of shows up without fanfare, without a lot of hype. And when you finally settle in to watch it, the show is cool, yeah, but something’s off.

It doesn’t land like Fullmetal Alchemist did. And weirdly enough, even Arakawa’s trademark style doesn’t pop the way it usually does. Let’s analyze what went wrong, and why Moonrise, with all the star power, just doesn’t rise as high as we hoped.

WrestleMania features grand entrances and action-packed matches. While it created an enthralling atmosphere for the fans throughout the years, probably none outmatched the kind of entrance the New Day took in Dragon Ball gear, with Xavier Woods leading the line along with Big E and Kofi Kingston.

WWE superstars have, over the years, utilized their love for anime characters to make their entry on the grandest stage of the WWE more unique and out-of-the-box. Be it the Sailor Moon character, which Sasha Banks adapted to, or Zelina Vega’s Naruto look, anime’s impact on the WWE is undeniable.

But the New Day took the admiration of everyone’s favourite character to another level. On the grandest stage of the WWE, the New Day put together a symbolic show that displayed an unquestionable love for anime characters.

It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Agents of the Four Seasons, Violet Evergarden creator’s next big project, is finally up for an anime adaptation. Thankfully, Wit Studios will be the one to bring the series to life.

As such, fans’ excitement for the upcoming series is already off the charts. Mostly because if Violet Evergarden has been any indication, fans are in for a great time with this series, too. The premise itself sounds intriguing.

Combine that with the kind of animation brilliance Wit Studios is known for, and Agents of the Four Seasons is sure to be a blockbuster hit. After two of the most anticipated anime series of 2025 tanked phenomenally, this recent news has at last brought a ray of hope among anime fans.

Demon Slayer often gets flak for being solely carried by its animation, which isn’t true at all, especially when we consider other aspects of the series. The animation is superb, yes, but there are other charms as well. It is true for its gripping storyline, engaging fights, and well-written characters.

We don’t give Demon Slayer enough credit for its fleshed-out and layered characters, be they demons or Hashiras. Gotouge went the extra mile with characterization. Their backstories and entire development within the story are well-thought-out however, this also extends to the mangaka’s writing of female characters.

From their backstories to their personalities, women exist beyond the frontiers of conventional representation in the series. They’re not restricted to the therapist, mother, and maid archetype; there’s more to it. The characterization itself is a critical lens into the shonen world through the mangaka’s view.

Should a list of well-known anime/manga characters be created, Tanjiro and Nezuko would be around the top. It is because Demon Slayer is so wildly popular that it has given fans some of the household names in the anime community. On the surface, the basic plot is very simple: good guy fights demons to save his loved ones, particularly his sister, rinse and repeat.

Especially when compared to the other big names like Hunter x Hunter and Attack on Titan, featuring some crazy twists and turns, Demon Slayer kinda feels too straightforward and simple with that “good vs evil” narrative. But that is what makes the show such a sensation.

There’s something seriously frustrating happening right now with Netflix and the anime community. And no, it’s not bad subtitles or those cringe-worthy dubs (though they’re always an issue). This is so much deeper. We’re seeing Netflix totally nail the art of how Not to market an anime. That anime? It’s called Moonrise.

Unless you’re really into tracking down anime news or watching Wit Studio’s YouTube channel like a hawk, you likely had no idea. It’s a little crazy, ’cause this isn’t some throwaway project. This is a massive sci-fi space opera from Wit Studio, the same geniuses who brought us Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and more recently helped spark that One Piece remake hype.

And yet Netflix is just letting it drop into the void with no fanfare at all like...

The manhwa industry is becoming increasingly popular within the anime community, with Solo Leveling at its forefront. Sung Jinwoo’s confident attitude and overpowered combat prowess make the series thrilling. It’s dominating amongst other anime series in 2025.

However, the more people analyze the story of Solo Leveling, the more they realize how generic it is. This isn’t to say it’s a boring series. The animation is excellent, and it’s among the best for action. Sung Jinwoo himself is enough to convince anyone to watch it, but that’s all it has going for it.

The manhwa falls short when it comes to having other interesting side characters. Most of them aren’t given enough attention to explore their arcs. Fans can probably name characters central to Jinwoo, like his family or Cha Hae-In, but the rest are forgettable in the long run.

Masashi Kishimoto’s opus, Naruto, is a true masterpiece in every way. This applies to the complex themes and symbolism in the narrative, be it friendship, resilience, or self-discovery. The series is thought-provoking and compelling in every manner.

There were moments when he wasted its potential. The characters, lore, and even the world-building were frittered away despite the sheer number of possibilities. What’s more disappointing is that this happened to one of the best arcs in the storyline.

But we’re not done yet, especially with fans’ reactions and comments. They won’t forgive the series for having butchered one of the pivotal characters. It was underwhelming and unnecessary for the most part, but it also highlights the mangaka’s knack for creating fodder characters.

Moonrise has all the makings of a modern sci-fi anime classic, with a brilliant aesthetic, exciting premise, and impressive visuals. Moonrise is not a project that was taken up by a subpar animation studio; it is being backed by none other than Wit Studio with series like Attack on Titan and Spy X Family under its belt.

The story was written by Tow Ubukata, of Psycho-Pass fame, and designed by Fullmetal Alchemist’s Hiromu Arakawa; it’s a carefully crafted project that took years to develop. It is not to be underestimated at all and might end up becoming a classic sci-fi anime with proper execution.

Wit Studio’s new original anime Moonrise is finally coming out on April 10, 2025, and on paper, it’s a total banger. We’re talking about a high-stakes sci-fi war drama set on the Moon, directed by Attack on Titan‘s Masashi Koizuka, character designs by Fullmetal Alchemist legend Hiromu Arakawa, and the mind behind Psycho-Pass and Fafner, Tou Ubukata, writing the script.

Fans have been waiting for the Infinity Castle Arc to be adapted on screen, and the first movie of its trilogy will be released soon. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—The Movie: Infinity Castle is set to hit theatres in July. It will be released in August and September, depending on the region.

Ryoma Kawamura, an anime producer at Wit Studio, has called out the lack of promotional efforts by streaming giant Netflix for the studio’s upcoming original anime Moonrise.

In a recent post on X, Kawamura addressed the issue without naming anyone explicitly, noting that the anime was still buried and urged them to increase visibility for the project.

Fans online quickly deduced the “Red ‘N’ company” reference pointed to the streaming giant Netflix, the platform set to distribute Moonrise.

“Please, I’m begging you—promote it properly! I can’t do this alone! Seriously, I’m asking you!! It’s still completely buried. Red ‘N’ company!! It’s time to show your power to the world!” he wrote.

Back when Attack on Titan first came out, the notion that ‘anime is for kids’ was still quite popular. If somebody got into Aot believing they were watching something remotely cartoonish or childish, they must have experienced a great shock. This is simply because of how gory the story can get.

This is also part of the reason why the anime-manga series has garnered so much popularity. Every human in the Aot world lived in fear of Titans, any day could prove to be their last if a Titan goes berserk. The mangaka captured and conveyed the severity of the characters’ suffering without glorifying it in any way.

Just mention spin-offs and now you have the attention of the entire Attack on Titan fandom. Every character in the series is extremely well-written, which makes them a subject of indefinite curiosity. Now, for those who already know about China’s policies, it shouldn’t come off as a huge shock, but still, it’s a concerning topic at hand to discuss.

Mappa, the anime studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan: The Final Season, announced on April 1, 2025, that it has launched its own music label, mappa records.

With this new initiative, Mappa aims to enhance the musical experience of its anime by collaborating with composers and artists to craft soundtracks that more deeply connect with its storytelling.

The label will not only produce music for Mappa’s works but also expand into global music distribution, CD and vinyl releases, and live event management.

Mappa stated it will continue striving to create lasting anime experiences.

Founded in 2011 by Masao Maruyama, one of the co-founders of Madhouse, Mappa Co., Ltd. is a Tokyo-based animation studio known for producing some of the most popular and visually striking anime in recent years.

Originally headquartered in Suginami, the studio later moved to Nakano, Tokyo.
