Let’s be real, anime fans nowadays are actually savage. No matter if a show is trending or not, someone will always come and say it’s ‘mid,’ trash the pacing or go on a 12-tweet rant about how the manga was ten times better. And it’s not just the controversial stuff, even the greats like One Piece, Demon Slayer, or Attack on Titan get roasted the minute they slip up.
So when a series like The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) comes along and absolutely knocks it out of the park in every category, light novel, manga, and anime, it literally feels like a miracle. I mean, 3-for-3 in this time when everybody’s critiquing everything? That’s wildly uncommon.

People say we should not judge a book by its cover, but as humans, we all end up doing just that. This is why if a show doesn’t really have a promising trailer or teaser, our expectations from it start to dwindle.
Thus, the first episode is hands down one of the most important episodes for any series because that majorly decides how much love it will get from fans. Yes, some shows may have a pretty slow start, only later becoming great, but those cases are few, especially in 2025 when attention spans are shorter than ever.

The first episode of To Be Hero X made me realize exactly how important it is for any show to start with a bang. What I thought would be just another lackluster animated series ended up becoming a show I am looking forward to the most this season.

The entertainment industry is associated with liberation in a creative sense. Yet this world has a set of rules and trends, which change every few years. In the world of anime and manga, Studio Science Saru is redefining these rules with Dandadan anime, especially ones followed by modern anime series.
From getting rid of age-old anime stereotypes to having well-written female characters, Dandadan does many things right. It shows how modern anime doesn’t need to adhere to the pre-existing standards to be popular. However, this time around, the discussion is more about the release schedule rather than the subject matter.

The second season of the anime was announced before fans could even recover from the shocking finale of the first one. Having a sequel in sight is a rare experience for many fandoms, who wait years for the subsequent seasons to get announced.

Every time it seems like the hype surrounding Attack on Titan might come to a standstill, a new announcement reignites it. This time around, it’s the mysterious portal website, which was recently announced and launched, that has sparked curiosity among fans. Its purpose hasn’t been clearly stated, beyond the fact that there’ll be new updates coming soon.
The entire fandom has been speculating what these updates might entail. From reboot adaptations to new merch, all the possibilities have been discussed. The most intriguing, yet unlikely one seems to be a potential spin-off. It is a great way to expand the series while honoring what it has already established.

Released this month, Moonrise, an adventure sci-fi anime, has been one of those hidden gems, sparking mixed reactions among fans. There is no denying that the animation is beautiful; the action scenes are like fireworks or something that pull you in. With such dazzling animation featuring some compelling characters, this anime has the potential to be the next big thing.
But here’s the issue- for all of that, it feels and looks kind of buried. What’s stopping Moonrise from eliciting more hype? Yeah, part of the popularity issue to consider is that Netflix didn’t promote Moonrise very well. But there’s more to the story than poor promotion.

From some questionable storytelling choices to the sheer amount of anime dropping at the same time, there are some reasons why this hidden gem of an anime isn’t shining as brightly as it should.

When Moonrise was originally announced back in 2018, anime fans were hyped. Not only because Wit Studio was involved, but because Hiromu Arakawa, the genius behind Fullmetal Alchemist, was handling the character designs.
That in itself made it seem like we were in for something big. Like, possibly the next big anime classic? Fast forward to 2025 and Moonrise finally drops on Netflix. And well it just sort of shows up without fanfare, without a lot of hype. And when you finally settle in to watch it, the show is cool, yeah, but something’s off.

It doesn’t land like Fullmetal Alchemist did. And weirdly enough, even Arakawa’s trademark style doesn’t pop the way it usually does. Let’s analyze what went wrong, and why Moonrise, with all the star power, just doesn’t rise as high as we hoped.

WrestleMania features grand entrances and action-packed matches. While it created an enthralling atmosphere for the fans throughout the years, probably none outmatched the kind of entrance the New Day took in Dragon Ball gear, with Xavier Woods leading the line along with Big E and Kofi Kingston.
WWE superstars have, over the years, utilized their love for anime characters to make their entry on the grandest stage of the WWE more unique and out-of-the-box. Be it the Sailor Moon character, which Sasha Banks adapted to, or Zelina Vega’s Naruto look, anime’s impact on the WWE is undeniable.

It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

Demon Slayer often gets flak for being solely carried by its animation, which isn’t true at all, especially when we consider other aspects of the series. The animation is superb, yes, but there are other charms as well. It is true for its gripping storyline, engaging fights, and well-written characters.
We don’t give Demon Slayer enough credit for its fleshed-out and layered characters, be they demons or Hashiras. Gotouge went the extra mile with characterization. Their backstories and entire development within the story are well-thought-out however, this also extends to the mangaka’s writing of female characters.

From their backstories to their personalities, women exist beyond the frontiers of conventional representation in the series. They’re not restricted to the therapist, mother, and maid archetype; there’s more to it. The characterization itself is a critical lens into the shonen world through the mangaka’s view.

Should a list of well-known anime/manga characters be created, Tanjiro and Nezuko would be around the top. It is because Demon Slayer is so wildly popular that it has given fans some of the household names in the anime community. On the surface, the basic plot is very simple: good guy fights demons to save his loved ones, particularly his sister, rinse and repeat.
Especially when compared to the other big names like Hunter x Hunter and Attack on Titan, featuring some crazy twists and turns, Demon Slayer kinda feels too straightforward and simple with that “good vs evil” narrative. But that is what makes the show such a sensation.

There’s something seriously frustrating happening right now with Netflix and the anime community. And no, it’s not bad subtitles or those cringe-worthy dubs (though they’re always an issue). This is so much deeper. We’re seeing Netflix totally nail the art of how Not to market an anime. That anime? It’s called Moonrise.
Unless you’re really into tracking down anime news or watching Wit Studio’s YouTube channel like a hawk, you likely had no idea. It’s a little crazy, ’cause this isn’t some throwaway project. The manhwa industry is becoming increasingly popular within the anime community, with Solo Leveling at its forefront. Sung Jinwoo’s confident attitude and overpowered combat prowess make the series thrilling. It’s dominating amongst other anime series in 2025.
However, the more people analyze the story of Solo Leveling, the more they realize how generic it is. This isn’t to say it’s a boring series. The animation is excellent, and it’s among the best for action. Sung Jinwoo himself is enough to convince anyone to watch it, but that’s all it has going for it.

The manhwa falls short when it comes to having other interesting side characters. Most of them aren’t given enough attention to explore their arcs. Fans can probably name characters central to Jinwoo, like his family or Cha Hae-In, but the rest are forgettable in the long run.

Masashi Kishimoto’s opus, Naruto, is a true masterpiece in every way. This applies to the complex themes and symbolism in the narrative, be it friendship, resilience, or self-discovery. The series is thought-provoking and compelling in every manner.
There were moments when he wasted its potential. The characters, lore, and even the world-building were frittered away despite the sheer number of possibilities. What’s more disappointing is that this happened to one of the best arcs in the storyline.

Wit Studio’s new original anime Moonrise is finally coming out on April 10, 2025, and on paper, it’s a total banger. In anime like Attack on Titan, where it is necessary to showcase the growth of the character and consider multiple time changes to progress the narrative, the creators often find it hard to depict these changes.
Usually, we only see the form of the character changing and looking a bit older, like Masashi Kishimoto did with Naruto. He was the same optimistic kid, just a bit calmer, looking bigger and older.

But Hajime Isayama gives a masterclass on the metamorphosis of characters through the growth of the protagonist, Eren Yeager. The way he goes from his wide-eyed innocence to a hardened gaze of despair and confusion is a clear sign of change and transformation.
Isayama portrayed Eren’s journey and growth beautifully

Viewers often find it quite amusing whenever a popular series features characters that are inspired by real-life personalities. And by no surprise, one of the most highly acclaimed sports anime, Hajime no Ippo, also draws inspiration from a few notable boxers you might have already heard of.
Out of all the characters the series has, Sendo Takeshi’s character is particularly noteworthy, but not because of the obvious reasons. Surely, he does show a great amount of resilience throughout the series and is one of the most well-written characters overall, but there’s something more that makes his character exceptionally iconic.

Fans are convinced that his character pays a subtle yet unmistakable homage to the renowned American actor and filmmaker Sylvester Stallone, specifically his iconic portrayal of Rocky Marciano from the 2006 movie, Rocky Balboa!

Back when Attack on Titan first came out, the notion that ‘anime is for kids’ was still quite popular. If somebody got into Aot believing they were watching something remotely cartoonish or childish, they must have experienced a great shock. This is simply because of how gory the story can get.
This is also part of the reason why the anime-manga series has garnered so much popularity. Every human in the Aot world lived in fear of Titans, any day could prove to be their last if a Titan goes berserk. The mangaka captured and conveyed the severity of the characters’ suffering without glorifying it in any way.

In recent years, anime has achieved unprecedented worldwide popularity, expanding from a niche fandom to a mainstream phenomenon. A lot of this has been due to the theatrical experience, with premieres now opening in theaters ahead of streaming, just like Hollywood blockbusters.
A prime example was Attack on Titan, whose final episodes were compiled into The Last Attack movie, providing fans with one final epic experience in the theater. Now, in 2025, another up-and-coming star in the anime universe is getting the same blockbuster treatment: Dandadan.

Just mention spin-offs and now you have the attention of the entire Attack on Titan fandom. Every character in the series is extremely well-written, which makes them a subject of indefinite curiosity. Spin-offs are the perfect way to know more about the characters and the lore, without taking a detour from the canon narrative.
With that, it’s safe to say that spin-offs are fascinating, but that does not include Bad Boy! If you don’t know already, Bad Boy is a bonus chapter of Attack on Titan that delves into Levi’s backstory. It’s a short chapter and evokes many emotions, and some confusion as well.

Anime provides us with a sense of escapism, and that’s all this medium has been doing for us for all these years, arguably better than any other medium. However, it now seems that, according to China, this escapism is getting a bit too much, and they’re willing to ban certain shows to put an end to it.
A Chinese news website, Mantan, recently revealed some possible upcoming anime policies in China that might be extremely worrying for the Japanese anime industry. But what exactly are these policies?

Although China is one of the biggest consumers of anime, their new policies might ban anime that revolves around overthrowing the government or middle school romance. Now, for those who already know about China’s policies, it shouldn’t come off as a huge shock, but still, it’s a concerning topic at hand to discuss.

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth has been making waves around the internet since it began airing last year. Rightfully so, as the manga offers a journey to humanity’s shift from blind faith to factual truth through a series filled with symbolism, history, and themes rooted deep in culture.

Anime as a medium of entertainment is growing both in Japan and across the globe. But, despite the growing global appeal, China has imposed more restrictions on anime that can be broadcast in the country.
Mantan Web reported that anime with stories on overthrowing the government or those depicting middle school romances are now are now being rejected for broadcast.
This means popular anime like Code Geass, or even The Dangers In My Heart could be banned in the country.
One Piece too deals with themes of fighting against an authoritarian government. But it needs to be seen if the new restrictions impose any ban on the series, given its popularity in the country.
In the past, popular series, like Attack on Titan, have been banned outright in China due to regulations concerning violence or “crimes against public morality.”

Anime's global popularity has surged exponentially over the last decade, with franchises like Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia and many others amassing huge international followings. However, some overseas governments are limiting the medium's availability by imposing strict new censorship guidelines on televised works.
Per Mantan Web, China has become even more restrictive about what types of anime can be broadcast domestically. According to one of the site's sources, "stories about overthrowing the government and works depicting middle school romance are no longer allowed." This is significant given that many iconic anime works, such as Sailor Moon, Mobile Suit Gundam, Fullmetal Alchemist and Attack on Titan, include one or both of these elements within their narratives. This, in addition to other factors, has had a profound impact on the anime industry in terms of which shows get produced and how they are presented to both global and domestic audiences.

Having the Titans running around with their creepy smiles or the Ackermans swinging across landscapes with their Odm gear is unimaginable in a potential Attack on Titan live-action. This is simply because of how Hajime Isayama has drawn these visuals so convincingly in Attack on Titan.

Solo Leveling’s second season has been nothing short of a phenomenon, smashing records left, right and center while setting new benchmarks in the anime world. With its finale now behind us, the series has clinched yet another monumental achievement, one that cements its dominance even further.
Crunchyroll Milestone: 700K Ratings and Counting
Crunchyroll has confirmed that Solo Leveling is the first anime to cross the 700K ratings mark on the platform, with a staggering 710.3K ratings. Not only did it leave behind some of the biggest names in anime, but the gap between it and the runner-up, One Piece, is enormous, 95k ratings, to be exact.
Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan are trailing behind but with such a significant lead, Solo Leveling’s reign over this record is unlikely to be challenged anytime soon.

Spoilers for "Lazarus" follow.
Shinichirō Watanabe is an anime auteur, most famous for directing 26-episode Space Western "Cowboy Bebop." The legacy of that show colors his career beyond just people remembering it as one of the best anime ever. Watanabe's later projects have sometimes felt like a response to or evolution of "Bebop." (His science-fiction musical drama "Carole & Tuesday" is set on the same terraformed Mars that "Bebop" often visited.)
The same can definitely be said of Watanabe's latest directorial project: "Lazarus." The series, animated at studio Mappa and produced by Sola Entertainment, is a 13-episode science-fiction action-thriller. Set in 2055 — similar to "Bebop," this future is within our lifetimes — the crux of the show is a miracle painkiller, Hapna.
Its inventor, Dr. Skinner, announces that the drug was designed to mutate after three years and soon, Hapna will kill everyone who took it. That means everyone in the world,...

A story so intricate and complex that there’s no end to the symbolism and details. That’s exactly how many fans would describe Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan. The conclusion of the series has happened twice at this point, once with the manga and then the anime, yet Aot continues to be relevant. Every day, there’s a new set of details that fans come across.
If not details and revelations, there’s no end to the questions and theories they have about the canon narrative. So here’s another one! This Attack on Titan theory will make you question the main idea of the story. The ending of the series completely changed fans’ perception of Eren that made him one of the most iconic anime characters.
