In space, Victor Glover orbited the Earth every 90 minutes, witnessing 16 sunrises and sunsets in a single day. In America, Victor Glover got behind the wheel of his car and knew that, as a Black man, he might be pulled over by police.
“You still have to drive home from work and be worried about a busted tail light stop,” he recalls of his early years training to be astronaut. “I am the son of a police officer so I knew all those tactics. I’ve been pulled over. I had police officers harass and I would give them my ID and they’d be like, ‘Oh, this is Victor Glover’s kid,’ and then I got treated differently.

After today's thrilling announcement about the "Fantastic Four" movie finally peeled back the curtain on Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated reboot, only one question remains in the minds of super-fans everywhere: When exactly will this film take place? Previous live-action versions made the choice to set the action in the present day, struggling to various degrees of success in translating the legendary superhero team into more modern trappings. That hasn't always panned out so well, so perhaps Marvel's Kevin Feige would set up this new take on Marvel's first family for success by taking a wholly different approach altogether -- one that hearkens back to the Fantastic Four's comic book origins. The new title treatment and font already hint at a certain throwback tone and sense of aesthetics, but are there any other clues worth paying attention to that might add more fuel onto Johnny Storm's fire?
You bet there are.

Eight years after the film “Hidden Figures” brought the work of three Black women NASA mathematicians to mass audiences, National Geographic will debut a documentary film “The Space Race: The Untold Story of the First Black Astronauts.” Featuring interviews with former test pilot Ed Dwight, NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Leland Melvin and more, “The Space Race” reveals the boundary-defying work of these men who dreamed of reaching the stars as Americans struggled for equality at home on solid ground. The film chronicles over 50 years of this history, up to 2020 and the news about George Floyd’s murder reaching the International Space Station.
The new film documents the discrimination these men faced in achieving their goals. In a trailer for the movie, NASA astronaut and former administrator Charlie Bolden remembers how amazed he was at America’s space program, but “growing up in the Jim Crow South, you knew what you...

Taking on an expansive topic, the contribution of Black astronauts to the American space program, Lisa Cortés and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza’s “The Space Race” derives its strength from the specific and detailed stories of its subjects. Spanning almost 60 years of historical narrative and concentrating on a handful of scientists who broke barriers, the National Geographic doc is the type that makes the audience question how they have never heard of these people before.
Cortés and de Mendoza interweave archival footage with the testimony of the astronauts in a fast-paced and informative way. Rapidly unraveling the fascinating story, they demand the audience’s attention and reward it. Blink or look away for a second and an interesting factoid might be missed. But their greatest asset proves to be the astronauts themselves. Their recollections are emotional and humorous, going a long way to paint such a captivating narrative.
