Dante says they talked while he was babysitting for Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms), and he feels so much better because it was finally a real conversation.

They discussed Lulu’s fight with Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton), her search for her daughter, Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlett Hernandez), and her struggle to connect with their son, Rocco Falconeri (Finn Carr).

Mickey Keating is a wide-eyed student of horror cinema. Each of his films is an homage to a subgenre, loaded with well-studied influences. Hitchcock, Carpenter, and others make stylistic cameos in films like Darling and Offseason, with his latest—Invader—giving us Keating's take on home invasions. It's a tight 68 minutes that echoes Funny Games, The Strangers, and even Adam Mason's Hangman, but in its stripped-raw approach, struggles to captivate as a blustery snapshot of a grander account.

It’s quiet on the indie front. Oscar contenders linger in theaters ahead of the March 2 Academy Awards ceremony that will close the book on 2024. The Indie Spirits unspool tomorrow. Relative newcomer Universal Language by Matthew Rankin, from Oscilloscope, expands to 24 screens from two last weekend, adding runs in the New York and Los Angeles area along with Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle and Austin. Mickey Keating has made several interesting genre movies over the last twelve years. He brought us the cult movie Ritual in 2013, the snowbound creature feature Pod in 2015, the psychological thriller Darling in 2015, the “hunting humans” film Carnage Park in 2016, the “psychos on a rampage” film Psychopaths in 2017, and Offseason, the story of a sea-dwelling demon, in 2021. Now, Keating is back with the home invasion horror film Invader (you can watch a trailer for the film in the embed above), and Doppelgänger Releasing is planning a limited theatrical release that’s scheduled for February 21st. Invader will then receive a digital release on March 25th.

Invader opens in select theaters on February 21, 2025.

Indie genre director Mickey Keating, who broke out with films such as 2015’s “Darling” and 2016’s “Carnage Park,” has wrapped shooting on his latest movie, the crime drama “Crooks.”

The film stars Keith Kupferer (“Ghostlight”), Angela Trimbur (“Quiz Lady”), Chase Williamson (“John Dies At the End”) and Melora Walters (“Magnolia”).

Per the logline, “Two small-time crooks rob a mob-run poker game in Chicago. Things immediately go wrong, resulting in a high-stakes adventure through the Midwest.”

“’Crooks’ is an incredible opportunity for me to break into the crime movie genre, which I’ve been hoping to do since I started my career,” Keating said in a statement. “This film is a highly stylized celebration of aesthetics ranging from noir to heist to western. I think anyone familiar with my work will see this as a natural progression from my previous films.”

Mickey Keating’s brisk, barbed blast of true crime-inflected nastiness opens with a quote that a break-in occurs every thirty seconds in the US and then cuts to a perp in the midst of trashing the latest place he’s unlawfully made his own. A sledgehammer is taken to walls, a sofa is slashed, tinned food is liberally splattered around, all shot with a trembly, handheld, close quarters view of the unhinged mayhem.

Nickelodeon Studios is moving forward with a spinoff to The Thundermans. The announcement follows the franchise making a recent return with a sequel TV movie.

In March, The Thundermans Return premiered on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. The TV movie still stands as the top entertainment telecast of the year so far in Nielsen's Live+3 ratings among children ages 6-11, and it reached 1.6 million viewers during its premiere weekend. Per Variety, this success has led to a spinoff series getting greenlit as well. Filming will start in August 2024 in Vancouver for a planned release on both Nickelodeon and Paramount+, similar to The Thundermans Return.
