Sitcoms have been a cornerstone of television throughout the medium's history, and there are countless reasons for their popularity. By putting relatable characters in hilarious situations, sitcoms provide an escape from the dramas in life, typically in short half-hour bursts.
While the desire for high-quality sitcoms has remained strong, streaming platforms have flooded the market, producing new original series regularly. It's virtually impossible to catch up with every new TV series, and this competition can make it hard for sitcoms to compete for audience attention. While there have been many excellent sitcoms, too many get canceled way too soon.
Updated by Arthur Goyaz on July 24, 2024: Shows like Friends and Seinfeld will always be remembered as iconic products of their time, but their popularity overshadowed other prominent shows. Some of the best sitcoms out there failed to find their target audience because of tough competition. This list was updated to include fresh sitcom recommendations.

Matthew Perry is a household name that will always be remembered for Friends, but his career was so much more than that. Perry’s roles in films like Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, and 17 Again extended his comedy chops from Friends to film. With roles like Matthew Albie in Studio 60 and Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple, Perry pushed himself outside of his iconic role on Friends.
To say that Matthew Perry left behind a legacy is somewhat of an understatement. When the actor died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 28, after an apparent drowning, the internet and Hollywood erupted with memories and tributes to a brilliant actor gone far too soon. Perry was just 54.
Though he was largely known for his portrayal of Chandler Bing on Friends, Perry leaves behind a filmography that extends well beyond that sitcom and a history of supporting addicts as they attempted to get sober.

The cast and crew of “The Crown” were joined by Netflix boss Ted Sarandos in London for the show’s Season 5 premiere.
Before the screening started, Sarandos took to the stage at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in central London on Tuesday evening to introduce the new season. During his speech, Sarandos called the series the “crown jewel” in Netflix’s original series catalogue. “This really has been and continues to be the highlight of my personal and professional life,” Sarandos said of the show. “And I’m incredibly in awe with [Peter Morgan’s] vision and with his writing. And I am incredibly, incredibly grateful for your friendship. Peter, thank you so much.”
Sarandos also took the opportunity to remind the audience the show is a “dramatization” of the Royal Family’s life. There has been much debate in the U.K. about how much of the show is...

Buckingham Palace on Saturday released a new portrait showing Camilla, Queen Consort posing with hundreds of Paddington and teddy bears left outside Queen Elizabeth‘s royal residences as a tribute to the late monarch following her death on Sept. 8.
The palace announced that over 1,000 Paddingtons and teddy bears will be professionally cleaned before they are donated and delivered to Barnardo’s children charity. Elizabeth had a close connection with Barnardo’s, and Her Majesty in 2016 passed the patronage of Barnardo’s to the then-Duchess of Cornwall.
According to the palace, the more than 1,000 bears are being well looked after at Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and in the Royal Parks nursery located in Hyde Park. As for Camilla’s photo, it was taken in the Morning Room at Clarence House on Thursday, which also marked the 64th anniversary of the publication of the first Paddington bear book.

Chevy Chase celebrates his 75th birthday on October 8, 2018. Known for his smug, bemused sense of humor, the actor has become famous for a series of highly profitable comedies. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in New York in 1943, Chase turned to comedy after a series of odd jobs. After a short stint with the “National Lampoon,” he shot to stardom in 1975 as one of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players on “Saturday Night Live.” In its first season, Chase became famous both for his pratfalls and his Gerald Ford impersonation. He was also the initial host of “Weekend Update,” starting each week with the catchphrase, “I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not.”
After winning Emmys for writing and performing in 1976, Chase left “SNL” after one year to pursue a movie career (he was...

In 1994 a little show called “ER” premiered on NBC. Created by prolific science-fiction writer Michael Crichton, the series was a medical drama, somewhat in the tradition of “St. Elsewhere,” and focused on the private lives and burgeoning careers of emergency room doctors in Chicago’s County General Hospital. Among the cast members were Anthony Edwards, of “Top Gun” fame, up-and-comers Julianna Margulies and Noah Wyle, and George Clooney, a relatively unknown actor from Kentucky with a smattering of TV credits to his name, including recurring roles on “Roseanne,” the short-lived CBS comedy “E/R” and “The Facts of Life,” on which Clooney played the eponymous “George,” a charismatic handyman with winged hair who eventually quits his job to go on tour with pop star Cinnamon (played by ’90s singer Stacey Q).
“ER” became a giant hit, winning numerous Emmy awards, with Clooney its resident heartthrob. If you were in college at the time,...

Source says relations between Danny Boyle and broadcasting firm now so strained that director's trailer has extra security
Rehearsals for the £27m London 2012 opening ceremony are being disrupted by clashes between the Trainspotting director, Danny Boyle, and the company in charge of broadcasting the Olympic Games, the Guardian has been told.
Boyle, who won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, brought in an independent team to stage and film the curtain-raiser, due to be seen by a global audience said to be 4 billion next Friday.
But rehearsals are being hampered by friction between his crew and Olympic Broadcasting Services (Obs), the firm that will produce thousands of hours of live sports coverage from Olympic venues.
Organisers have insisted that the teams were "working very well together", but the source said relations were now so strained that an extra ring of security had been put around Boyle's trailer within the Olympic stadium.

Everywhere you look, you hear how Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was captured and killed on Thursday. But this event didn't come as much of a surprised to Matthew Perry ("Friends") and the rest of the cast and crew of the short-lived 1987 sitcom "Second Chance." The first episode of the show featured Joseph Maher as Saint Peter guiding the dead to either heaven or hell. The first deceased is a beauty contestant, who may not be smart, but gets accepted into heaven. The second is Gaddafi, who immediately tries to kill St. Peter. Gaddafi ends up going to hell to spend eternity as a human bomb, blowing up every two minutes. Even though the show was filmed in 1987, that scene predicted that the Lybian leader would die on July 29th, 2011. They were off by less than three months. Check out the video to see the opening of the show, which was cancelled after one season.
