On March 30, 1984, 20th Century-Fox unveiled Robert Zemeckis’ adventure film Romancing the Stone in theaters. The film, starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, went on to gross $75 million-plus during its theatrical run. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
One of the nicest things about Michael Douglas’ production of Romancing the Stone is that it never pretends to be more than it really is — a rip-roaring adventure yarn with plenty of action, plenty of thrills, a lot of laughs, a few surprises and a pleasantly predictable romance. What makes it several notches superior to most of the competition is that everyone involved seems to have had a particularly clear idea of what he’s doing and the determination (and skill) to do it better than just about anyone else. At its core, Romancing the Stone is just a big, dumb movie but, as Pauline Kael might say, it’s a movie-movie,...

Fox is looking to reboot the 1984 action flick Romancing the Stone with Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in the lead roles. Heigl would play Joan Wilder, originally played by Kathleen Turner, and Butler would play Jack Colton, originally played by Michael Douglas.
In the original Romancing the Stone, Joan Wilder, a mousy romance novelist, receives a treasure map in the mail from her recently murdered brother-in-law. Meanwhile, her sister Elaine is kidnapped in Colombia and the two criminals responsible demand that she travel to Colombia to exchange the map for her sister. Joan does, and quickly becomes lost in the jungle after being waylayed by Zolo, a vicious and corrupt Colombian cop who will stop at nothing to obtain the map. There, she meets an irreverent soldier-of-fortune named Jack Colton who agrees to bring her back to civilization. Together, they embark upon an adventure that could be straight out of Joan's novels.

Another classic film gets a remake...and questionably so. Remaking an adventure classic such as this is tricky business due to a great risk of disappointing fans of the original. Who would they cast? Who could once again capture the magical presence that the cast of Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito brought to the screen? Fox is planning to remake the 1984 film helmed by Robert Zemeckis and has tapped Daniel McDermott to write. "Romancing the Stone," written by by Diane Thomas, followed teary-eyed romance novelist Joan Wilder (Turner) who receives a map in the mail form her recently offed brother-in-law. She learns that her sister has been abducted by Zolo (Manuel Ojeda) and Wilder must travel to Colombia to exchange the map for her life.
