Filmed back-to-back with Hsu Hsia's “Crystal Hunt” (1991) with most of the cast returning except Sibelle Hu, right down to the similar thin plot and the Hong Kong and Thai locations. This time around, director Yip has everyone hunting for a computer chip instead of a golden crystal which starts off in Hong Kong and ends up in the tropical jungle of Thailand.

In Hong Kong, arms dealer Tong Yeung (Shing Fui On) has a computer chip that contains the country's most advanced missile system. After his arrest, three American CIA agents, John (Mark Houghton), Peggy (Sharla Cheung Man) and Ann (Takajo Fujimi) arrive to take him back to the States. On their way to the airport, with the tag along of local Inspectors Sonny Ng (Carrie Ng) and Kwan (Eddie Kwan), Long Hair (Gordon Liu) and his ruthless gang ambush them.

With the onset of movie streaming platforms you can get a bit nostalgic for the days of roaming around the video store searching for something to watch and a little element of added mystery as to what you were watching, as the internet had yet to take hold. For many of those of us who lived that era, our introduction to the world of Hong Kong Action cinema was the documentary “Cinema of Vengeance”. Among the many clips it showed (and made you want to find the film in question) was “Tiger Cage 2”. The Film

The title of this film is confusing. I first saw it on a Hong Kong Legends DVD as In the Line of Duty. Hkl had released the first film in the series, Yes Madam, as Police Assassins, then skipped directly to this fourth entry. To be fair to them, it never made much sense to pretend that they exist as part of a series, despite the onscreen title for this one—Royal Madam IV: The Witness—again combining elements of the titles of the first two films.

However the title is styled, this one picks up with Cynthia Khan’s Inspector Yeung, who was introduced in the previous film, and would carry over into several more tenuously linked sequels. To begin with we find Yeung in Seattle, helping US Police. There, she and Luk Wan-ting, an immigrant worker moving boxes for a gang of drug smugglers, get caught...

Much like the Prom Night series, or in martial arts cinema the later additions to the Police Story franchise, the Tiger Cage films don’t feature ongoing characters or tell linked stories. The only real tie is that they share cast members and are all martial arts cop movies directed by Yuen Woo-Ping.

The Films

Tiger Cage is about an anti-drug team in the Hong Kong Police force in which there may be corruption, with potentially several of the task force members working with and supplying dealers. Simon Yam plays the head of the unit, while Jacky Cheung, Carol ‘DoDo’ Cheng, Bryan Leung and Donnie Yen are among the detectives he commands. Ace Studios and Odyssey Media’s action thriller Pound Of Flesh, starring Jean Claude Van Damme, wrapped in Ace Studios’ facilities in Guangdong, China this week.

Directed by Ernie Barbarash, the film is produced by Odyssey’s Kirk Shaw and Ace Studios’ Henry Luk. It will be distributed by Odyssey, Automatic Entertainment and China’s Chunqiu Time Culture Co.

Van Damme stars alongside Canadian actor John Ralston, UK actress Charlotte Peters, UK martial arts actor Darren Shahlavi (Ip Man 2: Legend Of The Grandmaster), Marsha Yuan, Jason Tobin, Andrew Ng and Aki Aleong.

Action choreography was overseen by John Salvitti, who has worked on several films with Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen, including Kung Fu Jungle, Special ID, Iceman and Iceman 2.

Principal photography has just wrapped on Jean Claude Van Damme's latest martial arts thriller, Pound of Flesh, which was filming at Ace Studios in Nanhai, China under the direction of regular collaborator Ernie Barbarash (6 Bullets, Assassination Games). Jcvd stars alongside British actor Darren Shahlavi, familiar to many from his work in Ip Man 2 and Mortal Kombat Legacy, as well as Hong Kong's Jason Tobin (Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift), Andrew Ng (The Man With The Iron Fists) and veteran performer Aki Aleong. Action legend Jean Claude Van Damme has signed on to star as the lead role in director’s Ernie Barbarash latest movie “Pound Of Flesh”. They have worked together on two movies already, which are 6 Bullets and Assassination Games and the fight choreography will be done by John Salvitti (Flashpoint, Special ID).

Van Damme will portray a man who rescues a woman in distress one night, only to wake up the next morning in a blood-soaked hotel bathtub without a kidney.

“I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into Pound of Flesh because it’s exactly the kind of character-driven action thriller I and my fans love best — a movie that delivers nonstop hardcore action that’s fueled by a really surprising story and real people you care about from the moment you meet them on screen,” said Van Damme in a statement.

Martial artist and action choreographer John Salvitti has released a behind the scenes video of himself working with Donnie Yen on the upcoming Hong Kong action flick Special Identity. It is a sequence of quick cuts from staging the fights to filming them. It is cool to see the transition from rehearsal to filming and you also get a sense of how insane the fighting is going to be in this film.
