Being a kid on a sitcom is tough. If you manage to dodge addiction issues and kleptomaniacal parents, one thing will still always be gunning for you: Father Time. When sitcoms center around a family with at least one young child, a decent percentage of its humor usually comes from the young kid saying impossibly pithy lines crafted by adults.

But as the kid gets older, they often get less cute and their character is forced to change. So, where do all those snarky remarks and cutesy moments go? The solution is usually the same: bring in a brand-new cute kid regardless how much shoe-horning you need to do.

Netflix is eying A Different World as its next shot at a hit reboot series.

Per Deadline, the streaming giant is currently set to produce a pilot for a sequel series to 1987's A Different World. The follow-up will focus on Deborah, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, portrayed by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy in the original series.

Like the original, the A Different World will follow its cast of characters as they navigate life at an Hbcu (Historically Black College & Universities). The sequel will be written by Felicia Pride and directed by Debbie Allen. The pair will both executive produce alongside Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood. This marks a partial reunion, as Allen, Werner, Prince-Bythewood and Bythewood all worked together on the original series, with Allen having directed 83 of the series 144 episodes. Casting is currently underway for the part of Deborah and other leading and featured roles.

A Different World might be one of the most underrated series of the 1980s. It began in the shadow of The Cosby Show as a vehicle for Lisa Bonet. She left after a season of her new show, however, and the series got better. It was able to focus more on the great ensemble cast, including the fantastic Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison.

The series was recently added to Netflix, and still makes for binge-watchable viewing. An even better part is that the streamer has been in pre-production of a sequel to the series since 2024. Now, Netflix is doing something it has only done once before. That is, it has ordered a pilot to be shot. The only time this happened before was for Little Sky, a show that never made it to release.

The series has earned a pilot order from the streamer, our sister site Variety reports, with plans to shoot a pilot this summer “to get a better sense of the show’s tone and of the chemistry among the ensemble cast.” No casting for the sequel series has been announced yet.

It was reported last year that a sequel to A Different World was in early development, and now Netflix has ordered a pilot for the potential sitcom. The streaming service typically gives straight-to-series orders, and this is only the second pilot pickup at the studio that we know of.

A Different World was a spinoff of The Cosby Show, which followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) and her classmates at Hillman College. However, Denise was written out of the series after the first season when Bonet announced that she was pregnant. Although showrunner Debbie Allen was in favour of writing Bonet’s pregnancy into the show, Cosby vetoed it. He said that Lisa Bonet could be pregnant but not Denise Huxtable.

Netflix will shoot a pilot for A Different World, a sequel to the 1987 sitcom, which will chronicle Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter’s time at an Hbcu. As Deadline reported exclusively in August, the project had been in development at the streamer since last year, and the commissioning of the pilot is part of that process. A rep for Netflix declined comment.

This is the second known pilot pickup at Netflix, whose business is built on straight-to-series orders. In 2023, the streamer ordered another comedy, the single-camera Little Sky, to pilot, whose production was impacted by the WGA strike. It ultimately didn’t go to series.

The sequel series to “A Different World” is moving forward at Netflix, with the streamer giving out one of the only pilot orders in its history for the comedy project.

According to sources, the plan is shoot the pilot at the beginning of the summer to get a better sense of the show’s tone and of the chemistry among the ensemble cast. No cast members have been locked in at the time of this publishing.

An individual with knowledge of the situation says that Netflix does not plan to engage in a traditional pilot season like the broadcast networks, in which shows are competing for a limited number of slots.

Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

Netflix has eschewed a traditional pilot process for most of its history, only announcing their first ever pilot order in 2023. The streamer has instead focused on straight-to-series orders or script-to-series deals for their shows.

All six seasons of the beloved TV series, A Different World, are now streaming on Netflix. The show debuted in 1987 and was a spin-off of the immensely popular The Cosby Show and season one starred Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable as she attended the fictional Hillman College, a Historically Black College (Hbcu) in Virginia. The show was willing to tackle issues such as HIV / AIDS, apartheid, domestic violence, and more.

Bonet left the show after the first season due to a pregnancy with Lenny Kravitz, and the focus turned to Dwayne Wayne, a math genius played by Kadeem Hardison, and Whitley Gilbert, played by Jasmine Guy. Despite the main character departing, A Different World grew in popularity and lasted six seasons until the show ended in 1993. Also, in the second season, Debbie Allen,producer and director and Howard University alumni, focused on making the show more authentic to an Hbcu experience.

Wine, they say, gets better with age. The same holds true for some television shows and movies, and A Different World certainly fits that category. The NBC sitcom ran from September 1987 to July 1993 on the network, and followed the story of Lisa Bonet’s Cosby Show character, Denise Huxtable and her classmates, as she attended Hillman College, a fictional Hbcu. A Different World was itself a spinoff of The Cosby Show, with both shows created by Bill Cosby. The show previously enjoyed a streaming run Max, but now, the story of Hillman College has found itself a new home. Beginning on February 7, 2025, and coming nearly 38 years after its premiere, A Different World will stream on Netflix in the US.

Tiffany Boone was done with voiceover auditions when the script for an unspecified lioness landed in her inbox.

“I just thought I was so bad at voiceovers,” Boone confesses. “I’d been trying for years and never booked a single thing. I quit probably a year or two before I got this audition — obviously, my agents didn’t listen and sent me this anyway.”

The 33-year-old actress was overwhelmed by the 60-year-old rocker’s appearance on the set of Blink Twice, co-written and directed by his daughter Zoe Kravitz.

The cast all stayed at the same resort in Mexico where they filmed the movie, and she opened the door one morning to find Lenny.

“I’d never met him before. I opened my bedroom door, and Lenny‘s just there. He was like, ‘Hi, you must be Naomi. I’m Lenny.’ I was like — I shut the door,” she recalled while laughing to People.

Although Zoë Kravitz long had the hunger to write and direct, the actual process of creating “Blink Twice” was led by fast instincts. “I didn’t have a plan,” she tells IndieWire over Zoom. “I started writing the story because I just wanted to write it, and I felt the emotion behind it.” She did not know at first that she was writing a screenplay, but just the process of writing down these ideas and feelings she was processing was therapeutic.

Only upon completion was Kravitz able to look back at it and say, “’Oh, that’s what I was saying, and this is what I was talking about. And that’s what that means.
