Indonesian horror has a new box office champion. “Pabrik Gula” (Sugar Mill), the latest spine-tingler from genre maestro Awi Suryadi, has officially claimed the crown as Indonesia’s highest-grossing film of 2025, conjuring $7 million in local receipts.

The supernatural thriller, backed by powerhouse MD Pictures in partnership with Est Studios and N8 Studios, has mesmerized Southeast Asian audiences with its atmospheric visuals, folklore-drenched narrative, and relentless scares. Drawing inspiration from local legends, the hair-raising tale follows seasonal laborers who find themselves trapped in a decrepit, haunted sugar mill in rural Java, where they battle malevolent supernatural entities.

Those are the words spoken by Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) when the priest finally stands before protagonist Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) with a gun to her head in the penultimate episode of 1923 season two.

Since season one, Father Renaud has been hunting Teonna, the Native girl who escaped his Indian assimilation boarding school and left murdered nuns (including Jennifer Ehle) in her wake. He spent the majority of this season tracking Teonna on horseback alongside Marshall Kent (Jamie McShane). When he finally finds her, thanks to a lit fire — after killing Kent over the murder of Teonna’s love, Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Gauna) — Renaud shoots Teonna’s father, Runs His Horse (Michael Spears), and demands Teonna repent for her sins before he kills her, too.

But even in what she believes to be her final moment, Teonna will not relent.

In 1923, Jennifer Carpenter plays Mamie Fossett, a U.S. Deputy Marshall who’s approached by Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) and the ruthless Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) for help with finding the young indigenous woman who murdered two nuns in season one.

For Carpenter — last seen playing Dexter‘s poor, tormented sister in the eponymous Showtime drama — it’s been the opportunity of a lifetime to play a real-life law dog in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel.

“I feel reinvigorated as an actor,” she tells Deadline. “I told Taylor I had the pleasure of watching the first season finale, and I was just so overwhelmed even knowing what was going to happen. I was like, ‘you don’t understand. This is an 8-year old’s dream. The 8-year-old who said to my parents, ‘I want to do this for a living,’ and they said, ‘sure, as long as you don’t ask for money.

1923 Season 2, Episode 5, titled “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” is a Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer episode, in which they play Spencer and Alexandra, respectively. The chapter continues to depict their struggle—like a dream where you try to reach your destination, but it never ends. The writing is designed to highlight the depth of their love.

In this episode, Taylor Sheridan delves deeper into character development and places them in harm’s way. Surprisingly, after heavy focus on these stars in previous weeks, the episode does not include contributions from Harrison Ford’s Jacob or Helen Mirren’s Cara. With just under a month until the finale, Season 2 is currently outpacing the first-season audience by 56%, according to Paramount Global. The company did not provide an audience average.

So far, according to Paramount, the Season 2 premiere has delivered 17 million global viewers, which is up 41% over the Season 1 premiere in the same time frame. The episode already posted an impressive debut audience of 5.4M, which marks 146% growth from the Season 1 premiere, and has since expanded its viewership by more than 200%.

Aminah Nieves and Cole Brings Plenty had ended the first season of 1923 with new opportunities for their characters, Teonna Rainwater and Pete Plenty Clouds, and their blossoming love story.

The first season of the hit Yellowstone prequel series was a breakout one for Nieves as it tracked her Indigenous character, Teonna, and her epic journey escaping a 1923-set Indian assimilation boarding school run by the Catholic Church where she was abused.

After everything she endured, the season ended with her reuniting with her father (played by Michael Spears) and beginning to fall in love with the son of the man who helped save her, Pete Plenty Clouds (played by the late Cole Brings Plenty). Her final scene featured the three of them riding off to Wyoming in hopes of escaping the priest (Sebastian Roché) and other men who are now hunting her in season two, which returned after two years on Sunday.

“1923” Season 2 has broken the viewership record for Paramount+’s biggest original premiere in the streaming platform’s history, bringing in a total of 5.4 million viewers.

The milestone is more than double the 2.2 million viewers who tuned into the “Yellowstone” prequel’s Season 1 premiere. It also surpasses the previous recordholder, “Landman,” which brought in 5.2 million viewers in its premiere.

Views on social for “1923” Season 2 increased 187% from the previous season to 1.6 million.

The drama series, which comes from Taylor Sheridan, stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren alongside an ensemble that includes Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Jerome Flynn, Darren Mann, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Michelle Randolph, Sebastian Roché, Timothy Dalton and Jennifer Carpenter.

In Season 2, a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business to Jacob (Ford) and Cara (Mirren) back at Dutton ranch.

The Season 2 premiere of1923 paid tribute to the late Cole Brings Plenty, who made his acting debut portraying Pete Plenty Clouds in the first season of the critically acclaimed Yellowstone spin-off. A photo of the actor dressed in costume as his character was displayed on a sepia-toned "In Memoriam" title card at the beginning of the episode (as seen below).

Brings Plenty was found dead in April 2024 at the age of 27. Reports at the time indicated that the actor had gone missing after being sought by police in connection to an alleged domestic violence incident. The actor's uncle, Mo Brings Plenty, who plays fan-favorite character Mo in Paramount's hit drama Yellowstone, later shared a statement from Brings Plenty's father, Joe, on Instagram, confirming his son's death while also expressing gratitude for everyone's "prayers and positive thoughts" during the search for his offspring.
