Had first-time Senegalese actors Seydour Sarr and Moustapha Fall seen a Matteo Garrone film like “Gomorrah” before being scout-cast in his Italian Oscar nominee “Io Capitano,” they might’ve blinked twice. The 2008 film followed two teens from the Campania slums and into a life of organized crime, ending with them both dead in the mouth of a tractor. “Io Capitano” also follows two teens on a journey — here as African refugees making their way from Dakar to Europe in search of adventure — and as with Garrone’s crowning movie, the Italian filmmaker did not share the full script with his non-professional actors. In other words, Sarr and Fall, who in “Io Capitano” play cousins, had no idea whether their characters would survive the journey across the Mediterranean Sea.
Their voyage to Europe is marked by great danger and peril that Garrone masterfully stages and never dilutes — including a final scene...

Given the challenges that many migrants face when traveling to a new land, it makes sense to assume that they’re fleeing harrowingly nightmarish realities. But the scenes that director Matteo Garrone uses to open his heartrending Io Capitano are far from nightmarish. Garrone’s big-dreaming migrant characters aren’t running away from something so much as they’re running toward it. The possibility that their goal is little more than a mirage makes this epic tale’s often horrendous journey even more wrenching.
The Dakar neighborhood where teenaged Seydou (Seydou Sarr) lives with his mother (Ndeye Khady Sy) and siblings is a chaotic sprawl of ramshackle buildings and bustling markets. Even if the critical reactions have been mixed, Italian films have proven much stronger than usual at this year’s Venice Film Festival, with a notable resurgence of genre filmmaking in the likes of Adagio and Enea. Ironically, Matteo Garrone, the one local director in the selection whose actual stock in trade is genre of all stripes — gangster realism, satirical comedy (Reality), and baroque fantasy (Tale of Tales) — arrived this year with a blisteringly topical drama that might be his most traditional, and best, yet.
Migrant dreams are a hot topic this year, and Garrone’s Io Capitano (literally “Me Captain”) follows hard on the heels of Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, which covers the same topic from a different angle: where Holland’s film deals with the experience of immigrants as they arrive in Europe, Garrone’s film fills in some of that backstory, showing the punishing...

Matteo Garrone, who is a two-time Cannes jury prizewinner with “Gomorrah” in 2008 and “Reality” in 2012, is set to be in competition in Venice for the first time with his immigration-themed drama “Io Capitano.”
Shot over 13 weeks in Senegal, Italy and Morocco with a cast of non-professional actors, the Italian auteur’s new film – the title for which translates to “I Captain” – narrates the Homeric journey of two young African men, Seydou and Moussa, who decide to leave Dakar to reach Europe. It depicts their plight through the pitfalls of the desert, the horrors of detention centers in Libya and the dangers of the sea.
“‘Io Capitano’ was born from the idea of telling the epic journey of two young Senegalese migrants who cross Africa, with all its dangers, to pursue a dream called Europe,” Garrone said in a statement to Variety. “To make the film, we started from the true...

After 2018’s Dogman and then 2019’s Pinocchio, Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone stirs his ship towards coming-of-age adventure drama territory. Filmed in Italy, Morocco and Senegal in March of ’22, Io Capitano features Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall. Perhaps Garrone, like Guillermo del Toro and David Lowery, is unafraid to move into adventure fantasy matter.
Gist: Written by Massimo Ceccherini, Massimo Gaudioso and Garrone, this tells the story of two young men, who leave Dakar for Europe.

Italian director Matteo Garrone recently got ahead of the curve with his take on Pinocchio (preceding four (!) new adaptations of the Carlo Collodi tale this year) and now he’s heading from fantasy into reality for his next project.
Garrone has begun shooting his next project Io Capitano in Dakar, Senegal. Scripted by the director alongside Massimo Gaudioso, Massimo Ceccherini, and Andrea Tagliaferri, the film follows the hazardous journey of two young men (newcomers Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall), who leave Dakar for Europe. Descripted as a “contemporary odyssey through the dangers of the desert, the perils of the sea and the ambiguities of the human soul,” production will then head to Morocco and Italy.
Reports indicate that for the coming-of-age adventure, Garrone was inspired by the true stories of a number of young people who made the same journey, including Kouassi Pli Adama Mamadou, Arnaud Zohin, Amara Fofana, Brhane Tareke,...

Italian director Matteo Garrone, who was at the 2020 Berlinale with Roberto Benigni-starrer “Pinocchio,” is set to return to the director’s chair in March with coming-of-age adventure drama “Io Capitano,” on which France’s Pathé will be handling international distribution.
Garrone’s new pic, whose title translates as “I, Captain,” will be shot in Italy, Morocco and Senegal, marking the first time, Garrone –– a two-time Cannes jury prize-winner, with “Gomorrah” in 2008 and “Reality” in 2012 –– sets a feature film outside of Italy.
As is customary with Garrone, story details of “Io Capitano” are being kept under wraps, besides the fact that he wrote the screenplay with regular collaborators Massimo Gaudioso and Andrea Tagliaferri and actor Massimo Ceccherini (“Pinocchio”), who also contributed to the “Pinocchio” screenplay.
Rai Cinema chief Paolo Del Brocco told Variety that the film is “a coming-of-age adventure drama,” but declined to disclose further details, saying that Garrone does not want them disclosed.

Wonder Woman 1984 easily won the holiday box office weekend with an $85 million global haul. Domestically, the highly anticipated sequel was able to bring in an estimated $16.7 million, which is impressive due to the current public health crisis and the fact that the majority of North American movie theaters are closed. In addition, Warner Bros. also had Wonder Woman 1984 debut simultaneously on HBO Max, allowing subscribers to stream the sequel for no additional cost.
Wonder Woman 1984 was able to score the best box office numbers of the pandemic this weekend. Only 40 percent of theaters are currently operating in North America. "Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we're seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend," said WarnerMedia direct-to-consumer chief Andy Forssell. "Who are you...?" "Pinocchio!" Yes, of course. We all know who he is... Roadside Attractions in the US has unveiled one final US trailer for their upcoming release of the Italian update on Pinocchio, from director Matteo Garrone. This originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year after opening in Italy on Christmas last year. This new take on the story from Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with a main cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. This version has been dubbed into English - the same as the UK version we've teased before. This honestly looks so pretty bad, and I'm not sure...

There is something rich and strange and generous in Matteo Garrone’s new live-action version of the Pinocchio story, for which the director and his co-screenwriter Massimo Ceccherini have gone right back to the original 1883 children’s tale by Carlo Collodi. They have given us a story that combines sentimentality and grotesqueness in a really startling way. It looks like a horror film. This Pinocchio could almost have one of the stories that Garrone dramatised in his freaky-fabular movie Tale of Tales, and the story is very different from the legendary 1940 Disney musical version – without which, admittedly, no one would care about any new remake or reinvention.
Walt Disney, for example, never had Pinocchio being brutally hanged from a tree by two swindlers who wanted to rob him.

"I don't want to be a puppet..." Vertigo Releasing from the UK has debuted a new trailer for their upcoming release of the Italian update on Pinocchio, from director Matteo Garrone. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year after opening in Italy on Christmas last year. This new take on the story from Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with a full cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. This version has been dubbed into English for the film's UK release. Early reviews have been quite mixed - but if you think it looks interesting, it's worth renting at least. Here's the full UK...

“Pinocchio” will never stop becoming a real boy. Nearly 150 years after its initial publication and exactly 70 after the first Disney adaptation, the story continues inspiring new interpretations, from Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming animated version for Netflix to the just-announced Robert Zemeckis live-action take for Disney, which knows a thing or two about the potential for recycling IP.
By the time these updates arrive, however, Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio” will have already set a high bar for modern takes. The only new “Pinocchio” movie actually made in Italy, the tale’s country of origin, Garrone’s enthralling version
Despite an unruly running time and some rough transitions, the movie loads up on imaginative visuals and surreal flourishes that feel like a natural continuation — and a more complex variation — of the fairy tale playground the filmmaker last unleashed with 2015’s anthology “Tale of Tales.” Garrone takes his cues from Carlo Collodi’s 1883 story collection,...

Enough time has passed since Roberto Benigni’s ill-starred “Pinocchio” for the actor to move more happily into the role of Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s visually rich though oddly subdued version of the perennial tale. Given the director’s penchant for multi-strand narratives, the classic story would seem a good fit, offering potential to explore some of the darker elements present also in the Disney masterpiece. Instead however, Garrone’s live-action entry, while more faithful to Carlo Collodi’s original novel, underplays the significant elements of cruelty, creating a child-friendly movie with its fair share of enchantment but curiously lacking in memorable highlights.
Whereas the animated film brilliantly managed to subsume the piecemeal nature of the storytelling with an exciting narrative cohesion, this “Pinocchio” doesn’t hide the novel’s composite structure, resulting in a movie reliant on familiarity with the source material and the superb work of the makeup artists and prosthetics makers.

The wooden boy returns again. From the director of Roman Summer, Gomorrah, Reality, Tale of Tales, and Dogman comes a new take on... Pinocchio. Wait - for real? Yep. Garrone is finishing up a new Pinocchio movie that is scheduled for release on December 25th, Christmas Day, this year in Italy - but has no other release dates set yet. This new take on the story originally published in Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story rather than going all out with fantastical elements. Matteo Garrone wowed us with Gamorrah in 2008 and, personally, left me wanting with Reality in 2012, but now he's back at Cannes with his latest movie, The Tale of Tales (Il racconto dei racconti), based on the 17th century Italian author Giambattista Basile's collection of fairy tales. The film serves as Garrone's English-language debut and will interweave three separate story strands bookended by brief bits in which Italians Alba Rohrwacher and Massimo Ceccherini will play a street circus family. In one tale Salma Hayek will play a jealous queen who forfeits her husband's life. In another, Vincent Cassel plays a king whose passion is stoked by two mysterious sisters. A pair of new pictures from the movie have just arrived and I've included them in full just below along with the previously released, not safe for work first trailer. sb id="1513159" height="360" width="640"...

Whatever Matteo Garrone is cooking up for Cannes, it certainly looks to be the most visually ambitious effort yet by the filmmaker behind "Reality" and "Gomorrah." And today brings another intriguing peek at his next effort, one that will surely provide a memorable experience for those on the Croisette. Starring Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, John C. Reilly, Toby Jones, Stacy Martin, Alba Rohrwacher and Massimo Ceccherini, the film is a loose screen adaptation of the fairy tales by Italian poet Giambattista Basile. And indeed, Garrone makes the most of the canvas he gets to play with here, with arresting imagery among these pics. And we're curious to see how they all coalesce in the final film. "The Tale Of Tales" opens in Italy on May 14th. There's no U.S. distribution yet. Check out the new TV spots and images below.

With yesterday's announcement of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival selection it was inevitable we would start getting preview trailers for many of them and here we are, a brand new one for Matteo Garrone's The Tale of Tales and it's not safe for work. Filled with fantastical elements and an image of Salma Hayek appearing to chow down on the raw heart of some fantasy beast, the film is based on the fairy tale collection "The Tale of Tales" by 17th century Italian author Giambattista Basile. There are certainly many film heavyweights you might expect to see on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, but John C. Reilly isn't one of them. Yet this is set to change this year. With roles in both Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Lobster" and Matteo Garrone's "The Tale Of Tales," the actor's presence will be felt, and a new trailer for the latter has arrived. The picture, which also features Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones, Stacy Martin, Alba Rohrwacher and Massimo Ceccherini, is a loose screen adaptation of fairy tales by Italian poet Giambattista Basile. And this new, mostly dialogue free look promises a visual feast if nothing else, and we're very excited to hear Alexandre Desplat's complete score. The film opens in Italy on May 15th. There's no U.S. distributor yet, but once reaction from Cannes rolls in, that's likely to change. Watch below, and...

On Thursday morning, the Cannes Film Festival will unveil their official slate, but it's perhaps not a coincidence that some of the more high profile international movies, expected to be part of the lineup, are getting the promo ball rolling. I've already listed my top ten most anticipated blockbusters of the new year and now I'll take a look at the rest of the field as I've done my best to whittle things down to an even twenty films. So before you get in a huff that your favorite franchises aren't listed, just remember you can view all my anticipated blockbusters right here, I simply didn't know how to write the headline other than to just say these were my most anticipated movies without any further distinction. That said, I think I have a nice rounded list for you here. Obviously several from the major studios, but also a few overseas entries to spice things up. Plenty of Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal and a couple starring Rachel Weisz along with several of my favorite directors coming with new films for the new year. If you're wondering where films such...
