Blu-ray.com has announced that Scream Factory will be releasing a new crisp 4K ultra-high-definition remaster of the 2020 violent satire, The Hunt. The Hunt stars Betty Gilpin, Hilary Swank, Ike Barinholtz, Wayne Duvall, and Ethan Suplee. The new Blu-ray is due to hit retailers on April 22 and will feature a good number of extra content. Filmmaker Sierra Falconer’s Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake) captures a bittersweet feeling. That feeling of endings and beginnings, happening at the same time. For eighty minutes, we watch four short stories unfold in and around Green Lake. One involves a young girl (Maren Heary) learning how to sail after being dumped at the doorstep of her grandparents’ lake house by her neglectful mother. Another concerns a young boy (Jim Kaplan) at the fancy summer camp on the other side of the lake. He’s facing intense pressure from his mother to make first chair violin in the camp orchestra. An extended sequence of him practicing is particularly tense. The third story features an overworked young mother (Karsten Liotta) seduced by adventure in the form of a charming, wayward bar patron (Dominic Bogart) and a once-in-a-lifetime fish to be caught. Finally, there’s the lovely tale of two sisters...

It's hard to definitively categorize sci-fi into an individual box. Unlike other genres, there is never a singular concept that sci-fi focuses on. Rather, it imagines scenarios in which humanity is unbounded from limits on technological innovation and advancement. Thus, the possibilities are virtually endless. In these movies, dystopian futures are a reality, the universe is explored to its greatest ends, and extraterrestrial life is prominent. Even with unlimited potential, it seems like the most famous sci-fi works typically implement a pessimistic perspective.

For example, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner franchise, which will continue in 2025 with the series Blade Runner 2099, takes on the concept of hyper-advanced AI but does so in a bleak, depressing tone. Meeting other life forms has some positive implications, but the genre always assumes the worst. Several upcoming Alien movies will surely reinforce this trend, and offer a continuation in the story of the vicious Xenomorphs.

Update: Swept Away, the musical featuring songs by The Avett Brothers that recently posted a December 15 closing date, has been extended through Sunday, December 29.

Producers Matthew Masten, Sean Hudock and Madison Wells Live say the two-week extension at the Longacre Theatre is due to a surge in ticket sales since the closing was first announced last week.

Last night, actor Stark Sands, one of the show’s stars, made the extension announcement during curtain call. “The story we tell is about the will to survive against incredible odds,” Sands said. “Last week it was announced that Swept Away would be closing and then, something happened. We came to work the next day, and we walked out to a completely sold-out house. New Broadway musical Swept Away will close Dec. 15, a little less than a month after opening on Broadway.

Featuring a score by the Avett Brothers, the musical will have played 32 regular performances and 20 previews at the time of its closing. The show, about a shipwreck and the crew’s struggle to survive in its aftermath, received a Critic’s Pick from the New York Times but mixed reviews elsewhere. The musical has not had strong grosses or attendance since starting previews on Broadway on Oct. 29.

During Thanksgiving week, the most recent week of grosses that is typically lucrative for Broadway shows, the musical saw its capacity fall to 61 percent at the Longacre Theatre and brought in just above $412,000, which is below the running cost of a typical musical.

The Avett Brothers washed ashore at New York’s Longacre Theatre on Tuesday night. The folk-rock band made a special appearance during the opening night performance of the Broadway musical Swept Away, which features music from their 2004 album, Mignonette.

During an encore, the three-piece band emerged on a boat to a roar of cheers from the audience and cast. “Celebrating a special night with the band that started it all,” the caption on an Instagram post from the official production account reads.

Seth and Scott Avett stepped out in New York City recently for the unveiling of the marquee at the Longacre Theatre on 48th Street.

Swept Away is finally heading to Broadway after regional runs at Berkeley Repertory Theatre near San Francisco in early 2022 and at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. in winter 2023.

The story is billed as a “spellbinding tale” of shipwreck, salvation and brotherhood set on the high seas. The musical follows four survivors of an 1888 shipwreck who are trying to stay alive. The cast features Tony winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony nominee Stark Sands, Adrian Blake Enscoe, and Wayne Duvall.

The casting, though expected, was confirmed today by producers Matthew Masten, Sean Hudock, and Madison Wells Live.

Previews begin Tuesday, October 29, at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre. Opening night is Tuesday, November 19.

USA Network legal drama Suits has entered an important second phase in its TV life. After airing throughout the 2010s on basic cable, the show about a very busy New York law firm has become an unexpected hit in the streaming world.

IFC Film’s Werewolves Within saw the biggest debut in a weekend without many new limited releases.

Directed by Josh Ruben and written by Mishna Wolff, the comedy-horror flick stars Sam Richardson (Veep) and Milana Vayntrub. In the Ubisoft game-based film, a proposed pipeline creates divisions within the small town of Beaverfield and a snowstorm traps its wacky residents together inside the local inn. The newly arrived forest ranger Finn (Richardson) and postal worker Cecily (Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community. The small town of Beaverfield is much like many others across the nation in 2021. There is political polarization, longtime residents suspicious of newcomers, a stark wealth gap, infidelity, gossip, and at least one guy who is either a scary loner or just wants to be left the hell alone. But in the new film Werewolves Within what really sets Beaverfield apart is their lycanthrope problem.

Written by Mishna Wolff and based on the Ubisoft game, Werewolves Within is easily one of the most confidently crafted genre mash-ups to come along in years that delivers a ton of laughs, a compelling mystery, and an incredibly talented ensemble who all deliver an array of memorable and scene-stealing performances. I’m no psychic, but I do suspect that by the end of this year, many horror fans will be touting Werewolves Within amongst their favorite genre films of 2021.

The film has an aw shucks, nice guy trapped in a small town with a feral killer on the loose. If not for a Ubisoft logo revealing the game company as a producer of Werewolves Within, I would be wondering what the point of buying licensing rights was since this adaptation isn’t even set in medieval times. I’m not sure there’s more that sets it apart from other variations on Mafia (the deduction party game created in 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff before getting a fresh spin as Werewolf by Andrew Plotkin in 1997 and more recently appropriated into the online sensation Among Us) since I’ve never played the VR title, but it appears anyone could just write a murder mystery populated by over-the-top paranoids without worrying about already existing IP. I guess if you already own that IP anyway, though, why not utilize it for cross-media synergy?

It was originally supposed to open last March, and after numerous delays, they've finally reset the opening for this May. Following the traumatic events at home (seen in the first movie), the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. Starring Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe as the Abbott family. Newcomers featured in this sequel include Cillian Murphy, Djimon Hounsou, Wayne Duvall, and Lauren-Ashley Cristiano. This a fantastic final trailer, and really really makes me want to go see this in theaters. Looks thrilling as hell!

It took writer and director Aaron Sorkin fourteen years after the initial meeting with Steven Spielberg at his house on a Saturday back in 2006 to finally get “The Trial of the Chicago 7” made. And according to Sorkin, it finally came together thanks to former president Donald Trump.
