ABABOUINÉ
ABABOUINÉ takes us back to the 1950s, when the Catholic Church ruled over Quebec with an iron fist, and as a rowdy group of kids goes to war against the church. In his latest masterpiece, André Forcier revisits a dark period of Quebec’s history through an often shocking – yet undeniably and absurdly funny – lens. Starring Rémy Girard, Gaston Lepage (Jesus Of MONTRÉAL), Pascale Montpetit (District 31), Éric Bruneau (An Eye For Beauty), and Mylène Mackay (Nelly), the film brings together an...

What to expect from a genre festival honoring the un-expected? The Fantasia International Film Festival returns to Montréal for its 28th edition from July 18 to August 4 and it promises a killer lineup — with over 125 features and more than 200 shorts in total. The festival’s third and final programming announcement, made exclusive to IndieWire first, includes features from Steven Kostanski, Eugene Kotlyarenko, Scooter McCrae, and more.
André Forcier will show on closing night for the festival with the world premiere of “Ababouiné.” The filmmaker’s latest is a distinctly regional period piece and buzzy potential masterpiece about a group of kids growing up in 1950s Quebec under the harsh eye of the Catholic Church. Fantasia has awarded the film’s director the Prix Denis-Héroux, an accolade “bestowed for exceptional contribution to the development of Quebec genre cinema.”

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival will return August 5 – August 25 in 2021, with a virtual event being planned again this year as pandemic challenges continue.
However, organizers said today they are continuing to follow advice from local health authorities with the possibility of adding a range of physical events to the lineup, which so far includes screenings and premieres, panels and workshops, all in a digital format.
The fest also announced today it will open with the world premiere of Québécois genre feature Brain Freeze, directed by Julien Knafo. Though there haven’t been a lot of movies about it, the tentacles of Italy-based organized crime duly reach above Scorsese territory to the even-more-frequently-Frozen North. If not for the French dialogue, however, you wouldn’t necessarily know “Mafia Inc” were taking place in Quebec, or even Canada, so familiar and insular is the brutal syndicate business depicted here. This solid mob drama is based on journalists Andre Cedilot and Andre Noel’s best-selling nonfiction tome of the same name, which had the self-explanatory subtitle “The Long, Bloody Reign of Canada’s Sicilian Clan.”
Somewhat fictionalizing a few elements from that decades-spanning exposé, “Mafia Inc” isn’t the most stylistically flamboyant, violent or memorable specimen within its screen genre. But it does provide an engrossing thicket of criminal intrigue that ultimately comes down to a conflict between two families, one headed by veteran Italian star Sergio Castellitto, the other by native son Marc-André Grondin.

"Godfather or Pope, I don't want to see you or your family of crooks!" Film Movement has released the official US trailer for mafia crime drama Mafia Inc, made in Montreal by filmmaker Quebecois filmmaker Daniel Grou. Set in Montreal in the 90s, the film tells the story of the Gamache family, tailors for the Paternò Mafia family for generations. Vince works on behalf of Frank the godfather with his eldest son, and seeks to earn his stripes by impressing him, but goes too far and ends up starting a war. Based on the book with the subtitle: "The Long, Bloody Reign of Canada's Sicilian Clan." Starring Marc-André Grondin as Vince, along with Sergio Castellitto, Cristina Rosato, Benz Antoine, Mylène Mackay, Domenic Di Rosa, Gilbert Sicotte, Mark Day, Pina Di Blasi, Rafael Petardi, & Ali Hassan. This actually looks pretty good, with all the usual mafia tropes, but still cool to...

Montreal’s underworld is the focus for this meaty flick about a crime boss aiming to set up a money-spinning project in the old country
This unexpectedly absorbing gangster movie is based on a nonfiction book of the same name by André Cédilot and André Noël that delved into Montreal’s organised crime world. Set in the 1990s but with flashbacks to the 80s, the film revolves around Francesco “Frank” Paterno (a silky Sergio Castellitto), an affable local godfather whose great ambition is to build a bridge back in the old country between Sicily and the Italian mainland, and thoroughly skim off all the money such a massive project will produce. To bankroll it, he has all sorts of funds squirrelled away in offshore accounts, but slippery accountants are skimming off the top, and there’s major trouble brewing between his son and chosen successor, Giaco (Donny Falsetti), and upcoming...

A French-Canadian remake of the hit cop comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” titled “Escouade 99” and transplanted to Quebec, has left people baffled. And that includes one of the original stars of the ongoing police procedural sitcom, once at Fox and now living at NBC. Melissa Fumero, who plays rule-abiding sergeant Amy Santiago, took to Twitter to blast the remake’s apparently whitewashed casting, with a non-Latina actress playing the Cuban-American star’s role. Another role, Fumero noted, also went to a non-Latina actress originally played by Stephanie Beatriz. In the new version, which just released a trailer, the characters are now dubbed as Fanny, portrayed by actress Mylène Mackay, and Rosalie, played by Bianca Gervais.
“This is like peeking through another dimension,” Fumero tweeted this week. “Gotta say though after watching this…I’m suddenly curious about the Latina population in Quebec. Just sayin’.”
Fumero continued to tweet her reactions to the new show.

The trailer for the French-language adaptation of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” suggests the new series will be largely faithful to the original, but one key difference caught the attention of Melissa Fumero.
“I’m suddenly curious about the Latina population in Quebec. Just sayin,” Fumero said in a Twitter thread on Thursday after sharing the first trailer for the Quebec-set “Escoude 99.”
The adaptation, which premieres on Quebec’s streaming service Club illico next month, is the first foreign adaptation of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and appears to feature characters and storylines directly mapped from the U.S. version. However, whereas the characters of Amy and Rosa are played by Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz in the U.S, in the “Escoude 99” version, they are played by white actresses, Mylène Mackay and Bianca Gervais.

2020 continues, as a first trailer for the Quebec remake of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has now been released. Yes, you read all of those words correctly. Do not adjust your screen.
Escouade 99 (Squad 99 in English) really does appear to be a near shot-for-shot remake of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with its original cast replaced by the likes of Mickaël Gouin, Bianca Gervais, Mylène Mackay, Widemir Normil and Guy Jodoin. The Quebec version was directed by Patrick Huard (Bon Cop Bad Cop) and it follows “a group of endearing and out of the ordinary detectives who fight crime at Escouade 99 in Quebec City.”

After a promising initial line-up, the Toronto International Film Festival has delivered more titles with their full Canadian slate. Among the line-up is Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, Bruce MacDonald‘s new feature Weirdos, Deepa Mehta‘s Anatomy of Violence, as well as Two Lovers and a Bear, starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan, which we have the first trailer for today.
We said in our review from Cannes, “Kim Nguyen’s Two Lovers and a Bear is a film that suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Like an indie playlist stuck on constant shuffle, unapologetically reveling in a sort of manic unclassifiable genre. This isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, but, for some reason, Nguyen’s scattershot tonal shifts — which hop between a romance on the rocks; a self-serious study of grieving; and a surreal buddy comedy — can prove quite jarring.

For a Canadian filmmaker, having your film play at the Toronto International Film Festival is a pretty big deal.
One of the biggest film festivals in the world (and with the amount of films, quantitatively, Tiff plays more new movies than anywhere else), launching your new film at not just a prestigious event, but in a place that you can call home, is a beautiful thing.
As Canadians, we take a certain pride in our homegrown cinema, and Tiff is a major launching pad for these films. Major programming standouts including Xavier Dolan’s Cannes Grand Prix winner “It’s Only the End of the World” and Nathan Morlando’s Cannes debut “Mean Dreams.” Other films of note include April Mullen’s “Below Her Mouth” and Kim Nguyen’s Dane DeHaan-starring “Two Lovers and a Bear.”
This year’s Tiff Rising Stars — four Canadian actors who will take part in a series of specialized programming organized by Tiff’s Industry team — include Jared Abrahamson, Grace Glowicki, Mylène Mackay and Sophie Nélisse. Additional international Rising Stars will be announced in the coming weeks.

Following the rare footsteps of Nicolas Roeg, Mario Bava, Barry Sonnenfeld, Zhang Yimou, Jack Cardiff, and more, cinematographer André Turpin also tries his hand at directing every so often. After beautiful work on Mommy, Tom at the Farm, Incendies, he recently returned to Tiff with his first directorial work in 14 years, the mystery drama Endorphine. We now have the first trailer following the premiere, which has us highly intrigued with its evocative imagery and plotting, and hopefully U.S. distribution will follow soon.
