The Jesus Lizard have released the new single “I’m Tired of Being Your Mother,” the final preview from their upcoming Flux EP, out on Record Store Day (April 12th).
The doomy number follows a plodding beat and is laced unsettling guitar textures that creep in and out of the mix — a stab here, a haunting arpeggio there. It’s the kind of Jesus Lizard song that gives David Yow full rein to spew his typically acerbic lyrics. In this case, a collection of verbal scoldings of the maternal variety.

“When a friend of mine was about eight years old, living outside of New Orleans, his mother once said to him, in a slow, dull drawl, ‘Im tired uh bein’ yo mutha’,” Yow explained via a press release. “That really struck me. The lyrics are actual quotes of awful things mothers have said to their children.

In movies, the underdog’s ultimate triumph serves as an ideal feel-good narrative, and sports dramas have a way of getting to our hearts by making us root for them against all odds. A 2024 sports drama, You Gotta Believe, starring Luke Wilson, fits perfectly into this mold. Despite its divisive reception among critics, the movie has struck a chord with audiences. You Gotta Believe arrived on Netflix in January 2025 and is now sitting pretty at #2 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies list (via Flix Patrol).
You Gotta Believe follows the story of Bobby Ratliff (Wilson), a dedicated assistant coach of the Westside All-Stars, a youth baseball team from Fort Worth, Texas. The team, as you’d expect, isn’t very good at the sport, and it doesn’t help that Ratliff is diagnosed with terminal cancer just as they’re on a path to enter the 2002 Little League World Series. The Jesus Lizard have unleashed a new standalone single called “Westside.” The track is the second non-album song to be unveiled since the September release of the band’s comeback LP, Rack.
“Westside” follows “Cost of Living,” the previous standalone single that was released in November. While neither track made the album, the two songs are connected.

Guitarist Duane Denison explained, “‘Westside’ goes along with the previous single, ‘Cost of Living,” which was subconsciously influenced by Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and hence the name. Really.”
Singer David Yow noted a reference to legendary filmmaker David Lynch, who passed away last week. “There is a part in ‘Westside’ where the lyrics say, ‘… give him back his arm,’” stated Yow. “That was inspired by David Lynch’s Lost Highway, when Robert Blake’s character says, ‘Give me back my phone.’”

When it comes to film, the period drama has always been a staple of Hollywood. Before the age of blockbuster superhero films, it seemed like every A-list actor had at least one period drama on their resume. With these films taking place in specific time periods rather than in the modern day, there is extra effort put into the costuming, props, and set design to create a realistic, immersive experience for the viewer, transporting them back in time.
While period pieces like Pride & Prejudice (2005), Emma (2020), Little Women (2019), and The Pianist are universally regarded as great period dramas, there are plenty of period pieces that have fallen under the radar in terms of audience reception or box office returns. With Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation recently announced, it seems that the period drama has the potential to make a comeback, and many of these films are great examples of fantastic period dramas.

The success of Wicked is proof that a movie musical still has the power to draw moviegoers. But is there more to it? Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story was critically well-received but failed at the box office. Granted, Wicked is more contemporary, but still. I believe that its success lies, at least in some part, in a fascination with the origins of movie villains. It's the latest in a trend of films that either explore those origins or whose origins are contained within the movie itself, and with Mufasa: The Lion King imminent, that trend continues by looking at the origins of Taka, aka Scar, the villain Jeremy Irons made so deliciously evil in The Lion King. The problem with these films is that more often than not, they give the villain of the original film a sympathetic backstory, weakening the character in hindsight by providing context as to...

With the release of Wicked, the 21st century is fast becoming the modern golden age of stage adaptations. The likes of West Side Story and tick, tick…Boom! prove that Hollywood has remembered how to adapt a Broadway show for the small screen, and even succeed in garnering critical acclaim. However, there is one musical adaptation that stands on its own in terms of style and presentation, Jersey Boys. With Clint Eastwood in the director’s chair, Jersey Boys is devoid of the glamour and spectacle usually associated with musical theater, and in its place is a much more gritty and stylized movie. The creative choices may be jolting to a musical theater fan on first viewing, but it allows Jersey Boys to stand out and be a truly unique and under-appreciated movie musical.

Spellbound is Netflix's latest animated adventure, one of the streaming service's most interesting and lovable projects in recent memory. The story follows a young princess named Ellian, voiced by West Side Story's Rachel Zegler, whose parents are transformed into giant monsters. With nobody to look after her, the young girl sets out on a dangerous quest to reverse the curse and bring her parents back before it's too late. Spellbound has a fun cast of recognizable voices that help bring this story to life, with the film's bright visuals and catchy music doing the rest.
Alongside Zegler's main character, Spellbound also features actors like John Lithgow, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem in supporting roles, which constitutes some undeniable star power behind the project. The production is the latest in an ever-growing list of collaborations between Netflix and Skydance to have animated movies released directly on the streaming platform. Incidentally,...

“Based on a True Story” returns with a deliciously dark and twisted second season that takes the true-crime podcast concept and flips it. After a whirlwind trip in Season 1, where Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan Bartlett (Chris Messina) were entangled with serial murderer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman), the series delves deeper into the intricate world of crime, media, and personal transformation.
The first season introduced us to a suburban couple at their wit’s end – Ava, a true crime fanatic, and Nathan, a failed tennis coach – who mysteriously decide to launch a podcast after discovering Matt’s identity as the Westside Ripper. Their strange blackmail-turned-podcast strategy not only rescued their marriage but also landed them in a deadly dance with a charismatic serial murderer.
Season 2 begins with dramatic life changes: Ava has given birth to baby Jack, Nathan is scraping by with private tennis lessons, and Matt appears to have endured a recovery journey.

Based on a True Story may not be based in reality, but Season 2 is keeping serial killer Matt’s (Tom Bateman) story unpredictable as his entanglement with new parents Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) continues. The series returns to Peacock on Thursday, November 21, and Bateman stopped by TV Insider’s studio to tease what’s in store for the latest chapter. As fans may recall, the killer who led a double life as a plumber weaseled his way into Ava and Nathan’s lives when their true crime obsession uncovers him as the Westside Ripper in Season 1. Colleen Hayes / Peacock After initially starting a podcast together in agreement that they’d all stay on their own side of metaphorically drawn lines, those boundaries were blurred when people in Ava and Nathan’s lives began snooping and uncovering some answers about their activities. When a friend of Ava and Nathan’s wound up dead,...

The first season of Based on a True Story highlights the Bartletts, Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina), following true crime obsessive Ava's discovery of the identity of a serial killer, the Westside Ripper/Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). They do what any reasonable couple would: start a podcast and blackmail the Ripper to guest on it. It's a dangerous win-win: he loves the uptick in fame without the perils of getting caught, while the danger brings passion back into Ava and Nathan's relationship. The series is a funny, loving send-up of modern media and podcasting culture, as well as the true crime genre and the motives of those who find thrills in it. While its initial outing focused on the Bartletts, the second is all about Matt. The Westside Ripper's past and legacy drive Season 2's narrative, leading to a strong finale, but the series' return can't quite overcome a rocky start.

Like every other person on this planet who consumes entertainment through literature or moving pictures, I won’t deny the fact that I like the crime genre. That said, regardless of whether the story in question is completely fictional, real, or made of half-truths, if a movie or a show is being grotesque or sensational to cover up its lack of substance, I’m not putting up with that that nonsense. But given how true crime films, shows, miniseries, books, podcasts, long-form videos, short-form videos, and even licensed merch are all the rage right now, I guess not everyone feels the same way about turning real-life tragedies into “content.” So, it was delightful to see a comedy series, using one of the most hokey disclaimers of all time as its title, telling a pretty compelling story about how people are knowingly or unknowingly promoting criminal acts to fill the void...

In recent years, we've seen a real resurgence of big ol' stage-to-screen movie musicals hitting cinemas and streamers. West Side Story, Wicked, In The Heights, Tick, Tick... Boom!, err... *cough* Dear Evan Hansen and Cats *cough* — you name it, some big wig in Tinseltown's already figuring out how to turn it into a blockbuster smash. Somewhat rarer however is the (non-Disney) movie musical that gets the screen-to-stage treatment. But now, having made a splash Off-Broadway back in 2019 before the pandemic halted its run, Sing Street: A New Musical — an all-singing, all-dancing stage adaptation of John Carney's beloved, music-driven 2016 movie — is heading for the West End.
As reported by What's On Stage, the Sing Street musical — which follows the coming-of-age movie's story of a 16-year-old Dubliner trying to start a band in the 1980s — will make its London debut at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre next summer, running from 8 July...

In a way, you can thank Orson Welles for "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music." Over 20 years before he directed either of those pictures, Robert Wise got his start as a film music and sound editor at Rko Pictures. He gradually moved on to editing films themselves, which led to his collaborations with Welles on "Citizen Kane" and "The Magnificent Ambersons." You can see a lot of Welles' influence in Wise's later output as a director, particularly his inclination to shoot with long depth of field and precise use of sound. Both of these were essential to Wise's musicals, which snagged Oscars for both Best Director and Best Picture upon their release in 1961 and 1965, respectively.
Beyond that, though, "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music" couldn't be less alike. "West Side Story" is an impassioned tale of warring New York street gangs and star-crossed lovers fueled...

For as long as “teenager” has been a demographic, there have been stories about teens breaking free from the status quo. While a lot of the modern great teen rebellion media is confined to the world of TV — where shows like “Euphoria” attract constant buzz — the archetypal troubled teen story remains 1955’s “Rebel Without a Cause.” Starring James Dean in unquestionably his defining role, a rebellious teen struggling with his demons in L.A., Nicholas Ray’s film spoke to young people at the time with its story of high schoolers struggling with, and going against, the social pressures that bring them down. Over the years it became a touchstone because its themes and its honesty transcends generations.

A musical movie set around the romance about gangsters is not something you come across often. But Steven Spielberg came up with this idea in 2021 that got seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. West Side Story (2021), starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the lead, made a splash on the silver screen, with critics giving the movie rave reviews.

Secret Shakespeare adaptations make his works more accessible and reimagine them in new, relevant ways. Movies like "West Side Story" and "My Own Private Idaho" are examples of creative adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. "The Lion King" and "Warm Bodies" are surprising adaptations of "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet," showcasing how Shakespeare's stories can be changed.

Those eagerly awaiting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes can finally listen to the original version of 'The Hanging Tree' song.
A full version of the Hunger Games universe song-turned-protest anthem was released to the franchise's YouTube page, sung by co-lead actor Rachel Zegler. Offering a more somber, guitar-infused rendition of the song, it retains all the lyrics from 2014's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and was briefly heard in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' latest trailer. When the song will appear in the upcoming prequel film adaptation, however, remains unclear.

Zegler's singing talents on the set of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes were praised by director Francis Lawrence, who claimed that one song in particular "gave everybody chills" and even left a few crew members in tears.

Producer Kaytranada and Portland rapper Aminé have paired up for a full-length collaborative project, under the portmanteau KAYTRAMINÉ. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
The album reunites the two artists after nearly a decade of mutual behind-the-scenes support that resulted in three Kaytranada-produced tracks on Aminé’s 2015 mixtape, Calling Brio. The 11-track effort includes features from Pharrell Williams, Freddie Gibbs, Snoop Dogg, and Big Sean.
Lead single “4Eva” features production and a vocal assist from Williams. Watch the music video, directed by frequent Aminé collaborator Jack Begert, below.
“4Eva” was followed by the second preview “Rebuke.” KAYTRAMINÉ arrives after a similar year-plus release gap for both artists. Aminé’s Twopointfive project and Kaytranada’s Intimidated EP dropped within two weeks of each other in November 2021, and the latter’s 2022 single “Twin Flame” with Anderson. On Kaytraminé, their first collaborative album, producer Kaytranada and rapper Aminé create a carefree summer soundtrack. Kaytranada is pictured floating in a pool on the album’s cover, brandishing a smoldering joint with laissez-faire cool that echoes his production style, which is rife with beats that ripple in slow motion and synthesizers that reverberate like fireworks. Alongside Kaytra, Aminé is seen leaning forward, champagne flute in hand, with a mischievous smile, all perfectly mirroring his dynamism as an Mc.
Aminé’s performance on “Rebuke” unfolds with an assured nonchalance, while his flair for infectious hooks is evident on “Eye.” As the album unfurls, his focus shifts seamlessly between past and present, placing his humble beginnings in the context of his success. “I used to sip Jarritos every goddamn day…Now I’m in the Swiss alps sippin’ champagne,” he boasts on “Master P,” a playful flex but also a proud...

With The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes revealed as a prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy, the world will see a new cast and characters introduced to the franchise. The Hunger Games movie franchise began in 2009, and followed Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence in the movies) as she competes in a violent, gladiatorial-like fight with other young adults. The series ends with Katniss leading a revolution against the Capitol and ending the threat of the Games hanging over the country.
The overarching villain of the Hunger Games trilogy is Coriolanus Snow, president of Panem and overseer of the Games; and, is played by Donald Sutherland in the movies. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is directed by Francis Lawrence and switches the script by making Coriolanus “Coryo” Snow the protagonist. Outer Banks is a Netflix series about teenagers and modern day treasure hunting on the coast of North Carolina, known as the Outer Banks or Obx. In the show, teens hunt for buried treasure that is believed to be linked to John B's father disappearing. The island is essentially split into two parts, Figure 8 and The Cut. John B and his friends are part of the group known as the Pogues who hail from The Cut, or the lower class on the islands. The Kooks are the wealthy upper class from the Figure 8 part of the island, and they are also in search of the treasure, which causes the two groups to clash in a very modern day West Side Story fashion.

There’s no “I” in “team,” but there is an “I” in “director.” Maybe that’s why the Oscar for Best Director is almost always a solo affair. Though filmmaking is a collaborative medium with contributions from hundreds of professionals from various fields and disciplines, there’s usually just one person sitting in the director’s chair and thus only one person stepping up to the Oscar podium to accept the trophy. But Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert could accept Best Director together for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Designed as something akin to a Greek tragedy for today’s moment, Venice Film Festival Competition title Athena is a torrent, an inundation, a cascade of rage, fury and frustration over the realities of life for a particular group of French families. Such conditions exist in most societies, some more dire than others, but here the wages of pent-up anger are presented with a single-minded intensity and extended duration that would be hard to exceed.
Following in the powerful wake of the 2019 Oscar-nominated sensation Les Misérables, which was also set in a teeming eastern suburb of Paris rarely seen by outsiders, director Romain Gavras and his co-writers Elias Belkeddar and Les Misérables director Ladj Ly use undiluted adrenalin and immersive you-are-there camerawork to plunge you into the middle of a classical drama for modern times. The Netflix-backed film grabs you by the throat and barely allows you a moment for a gasp of air.

HBO has acquired “Generation Por Qué?,” a comedic Cuban American short inspired by and starring writer and producer Jacqueline “Jackie” Pereda. The coming-of-age story follows Jackie Pérez, a first-generation woman pursuing her acting dreams in New York City while enduring her very Cuban (and conservative) New Jersey-based parents. She can chase her dreams along with her other first-gen friends, but she cannot outrun her upbringing.
“We are thrilled that HBO is giving us the platform to share ‘Generation Por Qué?’ with the world,” Pereda said in a statement. Ansel Elgort denies sexual misconduct allegations from 2014. Earlier this week, a woman who only identified herself as Gabby, accused the Baby Driver star of sexually assaulting her when she was 17-years old. She posted images of their conversations, along with pictures of them together on Twitter, which caught the attention of a lot of people. Elgort was 20-years old at the time and he admits that they had a relationship.
Gabby claims that she first met Ansel Elgort through Snapchat when she direct messaged him. She did not expect him to reply, but the actor did, almost right away, and then gave her his private account name where they spoke further. They ended up meeting in person and began a sexual relationship, though Gabby claims that it was not consensual. Elgort had this to say about the matter.
"I was distressed to see the social media posts about me in the last 24 hours.

‘Seachange’.
The Nine Network screened just two first-release Australian dramas – Seachange and Bad Mothers – last year and had to rely on New Zealand imports to fulfill the local drama quota.
Kiwi series The Brokenwood Mysteries, Straight Forward, Westside, The Bad Seed and Dear Murderer and feature film The Changeover aired on 9Gem, accounting for 50 per cent of the network’s local drama obligations.
Conversely, Nz dramas accounted for only 5 per cent of Network 10’s local drama hours and and 10 per cent of the Seven Network’s, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s 2019 Compliance with Australian Content Standard and Children’s Television Standard report issued last week.
The report prompted Screen Producers Australia to renew its attack on Australian broadcasters’ continued reliance on “cheap, second-run New Zealand programs” to acquit their local Australian content obligations.
