The Jesus Lizard have released the new single “I’m Tired of Being Your Mother,” the final preview from their upcoming Flux EP, out on Record Store Day (April 12th).

The doomy number follows a plodding beat and is laced unsettling guitar textures that creep in and out of the mix — a stab here, a haunting arpeggio there. It’s the kind of Jesus Lizard song that gives David Yow full rein to spew his typically acerbic lyrics. In this case, a collection of verbal scoldings of the maternal variety.

“When a friend of mine was about eight years old, living outside of New Orleans, his mother once said to him, in a slow, dull drawl, ‘Im tired uh bein’ yo mutha’,” Yow explained via a press release. “That really struck me. The lyrics are actual quotes of awful things mothers have said to their children.

In movies, the underdog’s ultimate triumph serves as an ideal feel-good narrative, and sports dramas have a way of getting to our hearts by making us root for them against all odds. A 2024 sports drama, You Gotta Believe, starring Luke Wilson, fits perfectly into this mold. Despite its divisive reception among critics, the movie has struck a chord with audiences. The Jesus Lizard have unleashed a new standalone single called “Westside.” The track is the second non-album song to be unveiled since the September release of the band’s comeback LP, Rack.

“Westside” follows “Cost of Living,” the previous standalone single that was released in November. While neither track made the album, the two songs are connected.

Guitarist Duane Denison explained, “‘Westside’ goes along with the previous single, ‘Cost of Living,” which was subconsciously influenced by Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and hence the name. Really.”

Singer David Yow noted a reference to legendary filmmaker David Lynch, who passed away last week. “There is a part in ‘Westside’ where the lyrics say, ‘… give him back his arm,’” stated Yow. “That was inspired by David Lynch’s Lost Highway, when Robert Blake’s character says, ‘Give me back my phone.’”

When it comes to film, the period drama has always been a staple of Hollywood. Before the age of blockbuster superhero films, it seemed like every A-list actor had at least one period drama on their resume. With these films taking place in specific time periods rather than in the modern day, there is extra effort put into the costuming, props, and set design to create a realistic, immersive experience for the viewer, transporting them back in time.

While period pieces like Pride & Prejudice (2005), Emma (2020), Little Women (2019), and The Pianist are universally regarded as great period dramas, there are plenty of period pieces that have fallen under the radar in terms of audience reception or box office returns. With Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation recently announced, it seems that the period drama has the potential to make a comeback, and many of these films are great examples of fantastic period dramas.

The success of Wicked is proof that a movie musical still has the power to draw moviegoers. But is there more to it? Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story was critically well-received but failed at the box office. Granted, Wicked is more contemporary, but still. I believe that its success lies, at least in some part, in a fascination with the origins of movie villains. With the release of Wicked, the 21st century is fast becoming the modern golden age of stage adaptations. The likes of West Side Story and tick, tick…Boom! prove that Hollywood has remembered how to adapt a Broadway show for the small screen, and even succeed in garnering critical acclaim. However, there is one musical adaptation that stands on its own in terms of style and presentation, Jersey Boys. With Clint Eastwood in the director’s chair, Jersey Boys is devoid of the glamour and spectacle usually associated with musical theater, and in its place is a much more gritty and stylized movie. The creative choices may be jolting to a musical theater fan on first viewing, but it allows Jersey Boys to stand out and be a truly unique and under-appreciated movie musical.

Spellbound is Netflix's latest animated adventure, one of the streaming service's most interesting and lovable projects in recent memory. The first season of Based on a True Story highlights the Bartletts, Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina), following true crime obsessive Ava's discovery of the identity of a serial killer, the Westside Ripper/Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). They do what any reasonable couple would: start a podcast and blackmail the Ripper to guest on it. It's a dangerous win-win: he loves the uptick in fame without the perils of getting caught, while the danger brings passion back into Ava and Nathan's relationship. The series is a funny, loving send-up of modern media and podcasting culture, as well as the true crime genre and the motives of those who find thrills in it. While its initial outing focused on the Bartletts, the second is all about Matt. The Westside Ripper's past and legacy drive Season 2's narrative, leading to a strong finale, but the series' return can't quite overcome a rocky start.

Like every other person on this planet who consumes entertainment through literature or moving pictures, I won’t deny the fact that I like the crime genre. That said, regardless of whether the story in question is completely fictional, real, or made of half-truths, if a movie or a show is being grotesque or sensational to cover up its lack of substance, I’m not putting up with that that nonsense. But given how true crime films, shows, miniseries, books, podcasts, long-form videos, short-form videos, and even licensed merch are all the rage right now, I guess not everyone feels the same way about turning real-life tragedies into “content.” So, it was delightful to see a comedy series, using one of the most hokey disclaimers of all time as its title, telling a pretty compelling story about how people are knowingly or unknowingly promoting criminal acts to fill the void...

The 30-year-old West Side Story and The Fault in Our Stars actor will be starring in the upcoming survival thriller Faster Than Horses directed by James Erskine and produced by survival expert Bear Grylls.

In recent years, we've seen a real resurgence of big ol' stage-to-screen movie musicals hitting cinemas and streamers. West Side Story, Wicked, In The Heights, Tick, Tick... Boom!, err... *cough* Dear Evan Hansen and Cats *cough* — you name it, some big wig in Tinseltown's already figuring out how to turn it into a blockbuster smash. Somewhat rarer however is the (non-Disney) movie musical that gets the screen-to-stage treatment. But now, having made a splash Off-Broadway back in 2019 before the pandemic halted its run, Sing Street: A New Musical — an all-singing, all-dancing stage adaptation of John Carney's beloved, music-driven 2016 movie — is heading for the West End.

Challengers debuted to much critical acclaim in April and Warner Bros have now set a date for the film’s physical media release.

Those eagerly awaiting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes can finally listen to the original version of 'The Hanging Tree' song.

A full version of the Hunger Games universe song-turned-protest anthem was released to the franchise's YouTube page, sung by co-lead actor Rachel Zegler. Offering a more somber, guitar-infused rendition of the song, it retains all the lyrics from 2014's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and was briefly heard in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' latest trailer. When the song will appear in the upcoming prequel film adaptation, however, remains unclear.

The album reunites the two artists after nearly a decade of mutual behind-the-scenes support that resulted in three Kaytranada-produced tracks on Aminé’s 2015 mixtape, Calling Brio. The 11-track effort includes features from Pharrell Williams, Freddie Gibbs, Snoop Dogg, and Big Sean.

With The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes revealed as a prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy, the world will see a new cast and characters introduced to the franchise. The Hunger Games movie franchise began in 2009, and followed Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence in the movies) as she competes in a violent, gladiatorial-like fight with other young adults. The series ends with Katniss leading a revolution against the Capitol and ending the threat of the Games hanging over the country.

The overarching villain of the Hunger Games trilogy is Coriolanus Snow, president of Panem and overseer of the Games; and, is played by Donald Sutherland in the movies. Outer Banks is a Netflix series about teenagers and modern day treasure hunting on the coast of North Carolina, known as the Outer Banks or Obx. In the show, teens hunt for buried treasure that is believed to be linked to John B's father disappearing. The island is essentially split into two parts, Figure 8 and The Cut. John B and his friends are part of the group known as the Pogues who hail from The Cut, or the lower class on the islands. The Kooks are the wealthy upper class from the Figure 8 part of the island, and they are also in search of the treasure, which causes the two groups to clash in a very modern day West Side Story fashion.

The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards will open Sunday with a music performance from actress and performer Ariana DeBose.

DeBose returns to the BAFTA stage just a year after winning the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. BAFTA said DeBose’s performance will feature “contemporary music” that will be “inspired by this year’s nominees.”

Music performances have regularly popped up at the BAFTA film awards. Last year, Dame Shirley Bassey opened the show with a performance of Diamonds are Forever to mark the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise. A trio of anticipated live-action Disney films took center stage at D23, with looks at the new Lion King prequel, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.

Filmmaker Barry Jenkins showed off a look (and revealed the title) of his upcoming Lion King take, with Mufasa: Lion King bowing in 2024. Jenkins also revealed it follow the rise of Mufasa and feature young versions of characters Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will return as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively.

“Mufasa was actually an orphaned cub who had to navigate the world alone by himself, and in telling this story, we get to experience the real journey of how Mufasa found his place in the circle of life,” said Jenkins of the character, who goes on to become Simba’s father.

The film follows Jon Favreau’s celebrated 2019 remake, which earned $1.66 billion globally.

West Side Story, Encanto and In the Heights are among the nominations for the 37th annual Imagen Awards, which recognize work by Latino talent, new faces and seasoned creatives.

“After two years of streaming celebrations, we are ecstatic to be back in person and to honor those who made significant contributions to the television, film and streaming spaces,” What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén, who presented the nominees, said. “With the caliber of talent and the diversity of the roles and projects, our expectations were wildly exceeded with 445 entries, up 125 from 2021! We are beyond proud of this year’s nominees and all those who submitted. Given the excellence of the entries, the judges had a difficult time selecting those to be nominated.”

HBO has acquired “Generation Por Qué?,” a comedic Cuban American short inspired by and starring writer and producer Jacqueline “Jackie” Pereda. The coming-of-age story follows Jackie Pérez, a first-generation woman pursuing her acting dreams in New York City while enduring her very Cuban (and conservative) New Jersey-based parents. She can chase her dreams along with her other first-gen friends, but she cannot outrun her upbringing.

“We are thrilled that HBO is giving us the platform to share ‘Generation Por Qué?’ with the world,” Pereda said in a statement. There are so many stories about late twenty-somethings trying to find their place in the world, but largely leave out the first-generation narrative — especially comedies — where the parental intrusion is among our biggest hurdles.”

Ansel Elgort denies sexual misconduct allegations from 2014. Earlier this week, a woman who only identified herself as Gabby, accused the Baby Driver star of sexually assaulting her when she was 17-years old. She posted images of their conversations, along with pictures of them together on Twitter, which caught the attention of a lot of people. Elgort was 20-years old at the time and he admits that they had a relationship.

Gabby claims that she first met Ansel Elgort through Snapchat when she direct messaged him. She did not expect him to reply, but the actor did, almost right away, and then gave her his private account name where they spoke further. They ended up meeting in person and began a sexual relationship, though Gabby claims that it was not consensual. Elgort had this to say about the matter.

"I was distressed to see the social media posts about me in the last 24 hours.
