I'm not a person who is passionate about documentaries and for this reason I don't watch many of them, but as a kid I watched some in the evening with my family.
One of the main things that makes me not a big fan of documentaries is the fact that I too often find them cold, without passion, without a magic touch.
Obviously there are exceptions, for example in Italy Alessandro Barbero and Alberto Angela are experts in the sector, and their passion for the subject matter clearly shines through.
In this case I believe that Nolan also succeeded in this task, in fact I had never heard of the Quay brothers before this short film, nor was I interested in their genre, but I still felt their passion.
