You know you’ve made a controversial movie when the Pope weighs in – and that was certainly the case for 1933’s Ecstasy by Czech director Gustav Machatý. So, what exactly got Pope Pius XI so upset? Roughly a minute of nudity and the female orgasm. While the film is extremely tame by modern standards, people were a lot less relaxed about nudity and sexuality (especially female sexuality) 90 years ago, and Ecstasy is generally considered the first non-pornographic movie to depict sexual intercourse and female orgasm. What followed was a whole load of controversy, ranging from lead actress Hedy Lamarr (known at that time as Hedy Kiesler) claiming to be tricked into the nude scenes, to her arms dealer husband attempting to purchase every print of the film, to bans across the world — including the United States under the Hays Code.

As I’m sure many filmmakers have experienced, pitching stories from the heart can often be an advantage which is exactly the experience Writer/Director Grant Taylor had with his touching comedy drama Ecstasy. When the unexpected opportunity arose to pitch at Cine Circle, he pulled directly from his own experiences with his father’s Parkinson’s diagnosis and the keen memory of a documentary he had watched about the positive effects of the infamous party drug on sufferers. The resulting film – starring British actors Brian Bovell and Nathan Bryon as a father and son on a mission to score – is a richly entertaining short which follows the pair’s near disastrous attempts to give a man an opportunity to dance with his wife at her birthday party. Taylor worked closely with his own father and cast to provide an authentic view of the suffering inherent with Parkinson’s and...

“Mothering Sunday,” director Eva Husson’s film of Graham Swift’s novel, begins with the words, “Once upon a time,” which are repeated by the heroine Jane Fairchild as we see her open face in close-up.
She eventually begins furiously scrubbing something with a cloth, which lets us know that she is a servant, and a title lets us know that it is supposed to be Mother’s Day in England in 1924. But not everything is as it seems here.
The tone of “Mothering Sunday” is faintly absurd at first in a way that feels deliberate. There are static and pretty shots of grand interiors by cinematographer Jamie Ramsay (“Moffie”) and some extremely flattering lighting on Young and Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”), who plays Jane’s lover Paul Sheringham; there is one shot of them together near some white roses that is particularly swoon-worthy because of the way the light...

Jay-Z‘s office inhabits the northeastern corner of the 39th floor of a skyscraper just south of Times Square. It’s the top floor, of course, affording spectacular views of the East River and the rival towers of the fashion district. Even Broadway’s chaotic mess of neon, from this height, feels soothing in its muted distance, as if specially created to round out Jay-Z’s office feng shui. On a recent May evening, Jay, looking trim in a tight gray hoodie, rocks back and forth in an executive chair...
