There is an article in the May 31, 1943 publication of Life magazine promoting Action in the North Atlantic as the Movie of the Week and describing the burning of the 10,000 ton tanker, half of which was composed of wood and composition board, (requiring the presence of 25 firemen) and that the director, cast, and crew all wore smoke masks. It goes on to tell how director Bacon was nearly overcome by the smoke and that they used large fans to try to clear it between takes.
