Casablanca was one of nine movies to feature the duo of Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. Widely regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time, the legendary 1942 film never would have become the cinematic icon that it is today without Casablanca's star-studded cast. Featuring a handful of Hollywood's most talented actors at the time, Casablanca delivered Academy Award-winning performances from Humphrey Bogart and Claude Reins, as well as some of the most memorable roles in the careers of Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid.
For some, like Bergman and Bogart, Casablanca was their first and last collaboration. But for two of its supporting cast members, Casablanca was just the second in a string of movies to utilize both their talents. The film, when viewed on its own, doesn't hint at the recurring partnership between Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre in Hollywood, as the actors never shared a scene. But...

Casablanca's legacy is significant, as it influenced the noir and political movie genres, paving the way for other renowned films. Algiers, The Conspirators, and It Happened One Night are movies similar to Casablanca that offer compelling characters and stories. Allied, set during the same time period as Casablanca, provides a love story influenced by war and is a great alternative for fans of the classic film.
People who love Casablanca have a myriad of other movie options that use the same cinematic elements, tones, and storylines. Set in the French-controlled eponymous city in the year 1941, the award-winning film Casablanca follows the expat nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Boggart) who must decide between keeping his former lover Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) and helping her resistance-leader husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreig) escape so he can fight against the German Nazis. Between Casablanca's emotional ending and stellar actors, the movie is iconic.

“Bikini Blue” director Jarek Marszewski will direct the 1920s-set euthanasia drama “Iron Ribbon,” for which Los Angeles-based Egyptian actor Mohamed Karim is attached and Tom Hughes (“The English”) is in advanced talks.
The English-language romantic thriller, which is being produced by London-based Daniella Gonella and Jay Michaelson’s Dg Productions, is based on the true story of rising Polish stage star Stanislawa Uminska, who in 1924 killed her cancer-stricken fiancé in Paris upon his request as an act of euthanasia. She then stood trial, but was set free by the French court.
Karim is known across the Middle East as a former host of talent show “The Voice of Arabia” and for roles in popular Ramadan soaps. He is concurrently pursuing a Hollywood career that has led to roles alongside Nicolas Cage in 2019 action movie “A Score to Settle” and with Bruce Willis in “A Day to Die.”

Slash won’t stop. Since reuniting with Guns N’ Roses in 2016, the top-hatted guitarist has toured regularly with both Guns and his own band, the one whose name is difficult to say in one breath: Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. This month, he’s releasing new music by each group, 4 with Kennedy and the Conspirators, out today, and an EP, Hard Skool, with Guns on Feb. 25.
It’s taken a long time for Slash to get to this point. After spending his early years in his native England and decamping to L.

World War, a solemn vow, and a promise betrayed lead to a ‘night of the living war dead’ – all cooked up by the director of Napoleon, Abel Gance. The early, famed pacifist fantasy is back in near-perfect condition and restored to its full length. It’s a reworking, not a remake, of Gance’s 1919 silent classic.

Paul Henreid in ‘Casablanca’: Freedom Fighter on screen, Blacklisted ‘Subversive’ off screen Turner Classic Movies’ Star of the Month of July 2013, Paul Henreid, bids you farewell this evening. TCM left the most popular, if not exactly the best, for last: Casablanca, Michael Curtiz’s 1943 Best Picture Oscar-winning drama, is showing at 7 p.m. Pt tonight. (Photo: Paul Henreid sings "La Marseillaise" in Casablanca.) One of the best-remembered movies of the studio era, Casablanca — not set in a Spanish or Mexican White House — features Paul Henreid as Czechoslovakian underground leader Victor Laszlo, Ingrid Bergman’s husband but not her True Love. That’s Humphrey Bogart, owner of a cafe in the titular Moroccan city. Henreid’s anti-Nazi hero is generally considered one of least interesting elements in Casablanca, but Alt Film Guide contributor Dan Schneider thinks otherwise. In any case, Victor Laszlo feels like a character made to order for Paul Henreid,...

Sunday's overcrowded with great TV, but what to watch the rest of the time? Each Monday, we bring you this guide to five worthy -- or at least noteworthy -- highlights from the other six days of the week. Directed by Jean Negulesco TCM, Monday, April 30th at 8pm Turner Classic Movies is showing a marathon of four early films from the Romanian-born Jean Negulesco, better known for his later, glossier work like "How to Marry a Millionaire," "Three Coins in the Fountain" and "Daddy Long Legs." This selection is from his stint directing for Warner Bros. in the 1940s, kicking off with the film noir "Nobody Lives Forever," with John Garfield as a racketeer home from World War II. It's followed by "Casablanca" reunion (sans Bogart and Bergman) "The Conspirators," Joan Crawford romance "Humoresque," and "The Mask of Dimitrios," Negulesco's...

Charles Boyer, Hedy Lamarr, Algiers Hedy Lamarr can be seen later this month on Turner Classic Movies: I Take This Woman (1940) will be shown on Saturday, April 28, and The Conspirators (1944) on Monday, April 30. I Take This Woman was a troubled production that took so long to make — W.S. Van Dyke replaced Frank Borzage who had replaced original director Josef von Sternberg — that punsters called it "I Retake This Woman." Spencer Tracy co-stars as a doctor who marries European refugee Lamarr. Jean Negulesco’s The Conspirators has several elements in common with Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca, including an "exotic" World War II setting (in this case, Lisbon), conflicting loyalties, male lead Paul Henreid, and supporting players Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Curiously, at one point Lamarr had been considered for the Casablanca role that eventually went to Ingrid Bergman. Neither I Take This Woman nor The Conspirators did much for Hedy Lamarr’s Hollywood career.

Yesterday we reported that James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn had joined the cast of Robert Redford's Abraham Lincoln drama The Conspirator. And we wondered whether the project would scupper Steven Spielberg's own plans for a Lincoln biopic. For the record, we decided it probably wouldn't. But by way of a confirmatory update, Variety reports this morning that Spielberg is keen to stress that his own Lincoln is still in the works."We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie," he says. "It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible."The Conspirators focuses on the aftermath of Lincoln's assassination, while Spielberg's film is thought to be about Lincoln's hand-wringing over the Civil War. Tony Kushner is currently revising the script,...
