The Desperate Housewives ending wraps up eight seasons of mysteries in the picture-perfect suburban neighborhood, Wisteria Lane, and the ending answers big questions about what happens to main characters Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross), and Gabrielle "Gaby" Solis (Eva Longoria). Although Mary Alice Young's (Brenda Strong) friends have many happy times together, it was clear that the conclusion would be just as emotional as the rest of the series, as most episodes focus on the intense personal lives of the four main residents of this seemingly peaceful street in the small town of Fairview.
There are several mysteries in every season, from why Paul Young (Mark Moses) comes back home after a decade away to what Angie Bolen (Drea de Matteo) is hiding from. The best shows like Desperate Housewives have series finales that are gripping, memorable, and wrap up every major storyline,...

When last we tuned into Paramount+’s Criminal Minds: Evolution, Rossi revealed to the team, in dramatic fashion, that the mysterious “North Star” entity that inspired Gold Star is in fact the Bau itself.
To illustrate his alarming point, he distributed copies of a white paper that he and Jason Gideon drafted — but never submitted — back in the ’90s, which in essence suggested a “recipe” for creating a serial killer.

With festivals beckoning and box office wobbling, this obnoxious question looms ever larger: What’s next?
The strikes will end and a new season will begin but where’s that next cycle of movies and streaming content that represent groundbreaking ideas? Where will they come from?
A quick survey of past groundbreakers poses some answers, all of them disturbing.
Breakthrough movies of years past have represented the unpredictable product of corporate guile (The Avengers), artistic monomania (Avatar) or accidents of history (Barbie).
Some hits invaded the zeitgeist because they were relentlessly defiant (Midnight Cowboy) or simply inevitable (Harry Potter). Ironically, some of Hollywood’s most culturally ambitious movies were distributed at moments when films were being largely ignored by the filmgoing public – Doctor Zhivago (1965) or Lawrence of Arabia (1962).
Cinema, as with every form of pop culture, has gone through cycles of bold innovation as well as pervasive failure. Hollywood, circa the early 1960s,...

In baseball, scouts like to talk about pitching prospects in terms of mechanics.
There are pitchers who have repeatable mechanics: Their windup and delivery is the same every time, which reduces the chances of injury and facilitates easy and simple corrections.
Then there are pitchers with herky-jerky mechanics: There’s a violence and irregularity to the way they throw, which can sometimes yield more spin or more speed. But it means that in some games they just won’t have their rhythm, and the risk of blowing out an elbow or whatever is far greater. Maybe that career-ending blowout will never come and maybe it’ll come tomorrow. You never know.
HBO’s Succession is a show with repeatable mechanics. Not to be reductive, but it’s rich people who go to rich-people places and say “fuck” a lot. Give me that cast and that creative team and I’m going to assume steady execution,...

While it would be fun to see the ladies of Wisteria Lane reunited once more, there is a diverse range of reasons why a Desperate Housewives reboot could likely fail. When Desperate Housewives debuted in 2004, the series was a huge hit. Melding suburban dramedy with a dark murder mystery plot, Desperate Housewives season 1 managed to balance the plot's melodramatic elements with plentiful comedic relief. While the show’s second season saw its critical reception fall off somewhat, the ratings of Desperate Housewives remained strong, and season 3 of the series even saw its reviews improve again.
However, all good things must come to an end and, by season 5, the delicate tonal balance of Desperate Housewives had grown a lot less steady. After a controversial time jump, Desperate Housewives never regained its initial critical acclaim or its impressive ratings. Nonetheless, the series survived for eight seasons and, while seasons 7 and 8 rarely rose...

Kelly Dodd announces joint podcast with Vicki Gunvalson. Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/S_bukley
Controversial The Real Housewives of Orange County alum Kelly Dodd is planning to start a joint podcast with Vicki Gunvalson and not everyone is happy about that.
Kelly announced the news on her podcast with husband Rick Leventhal, The Rick and Kelly Show, and people are already reacting to the news.
The duo would be following in the footsteps of Tamra Judge and Teddi Mellencamp who currently have a joint podcast, Two Ts in a Pod.
Teddi and Tamra’s podcast tend to focus on things in the Bravo universe including the Housewives franchise and there’s a strong possibility that Kelly and Vicki will follow along those lines.
The pair haven’t exactly hammered out all the details of their pending project and Kelly did not share a possible date for the show’s premiere.

'Cat People' 1942 actress Simone Simon Remembered: Starred in Jacques Tourneur's cult horror movie classic (photo: Simone Simon in 'Cat People') Pert, pouty, pretty Simone Simon is best remembered for her starring roles in Jacques Tourneur's cult horror movie Cat People (1942) and in Jean Renoir's French film noir La Bête Humaine (1938). Long before Brigitte Bardot, Mamie Van Doren, Ann-Margret, and (for a few years) Jane Fonda became known as cinema's Sex Kittens, Simone Simon exuded feline charm in a film career that spanned a quarter of a century. From the early '30s to the mid-'50s, she seduced men young and old on both sides of the Atlantic – at times, with fatal results. During that period, Simon was featured in nearly 40 movies in France, Italy, Germany, Britain, and Hollywood. Besides Jean Renoir, in her native country she worked for the likes of Jacqueline Audry...

Anthony Mann
As much as any other filmmaker who found a niche in a given genre, in the 10 Westerns Anthony Mann directed from 1950 to 1958 he carved out a place in film history as one who not only reveled in the conventions of that particular form, but also as one who imbued in it a distinct aesthetic and narrative approach. In doing so, Mann created Westerns that were simultaneously about the making of the West as a historical phenomenon, as well as about the making of its own developing cinematic genus. At the same time, he also established the traits that would define his auteur status, formal devices that lend his work the qualities of a director who enjoyed, understood, and readily exploited and manipulated a type of film's essential features.
Though he made several fine pictures outside the Western, Mann as an American auteur is most notably recognized for his work in this field,...

Cinema is a kind of uber-art form that’s made up of a multitude of other forms of art including writing, directing, acting, drawing, design, photography and fashion. As such, film is, as all cinema aficionados know, a highly collaborative venture.
One of the most consistently fascinating collaborations in cinema is that of the director and actor.
This article will examine some of the great director & actor teams. It’s important to note that this piece is not intended as a film history survey detailing all the generally revered collaborations.
There is a wealth of information and study available on such duos as John Ford & John Wayne, Howard Hawks & John Wayne, Elia Kazan & Marlon Brando, Akira Kurosawa & Toshiro Mifune, Alfred Hitchcock & James Stewart, Ingmar Bergman & Max Von Sydow, Federico Fellini & Giulietta Masina/Marcello Mastroianni, Billy Wilder & Jack Lemmon, Francis Ford Coppola & Al Pacino, Woody Allen & Diane Keaton, Martin Scorsese & Robert DeNiro...

In the Place of No Place
Every movie contains its alternates, phantom films conjured variously by excess or dearth: textures and movements that carry on their own play apart from the main line of the narrative, an obtruding performance or scene, an unexplained ellipsis or sudden character reversal, the chunk life of an object seizing the frame in an insert whose plastic beauty transcends its context.
Though the extremes of pure narrative economy (in which each detail exists purely for transmission of plot) or utter dispersal (in which no piece connects to any other) can never exist, we can tentatively use the concepts as limit-cases to differentiate films which make room for their phantoms (or, in the worst case,...

Directed by Anthony Mann
Screenplay by Harry Essex
U.S.A., 1947
One of film noir’s strongest, most unique qualities is its malleability. A film which fans and scholars deem as part of the genre need not be especially violent, nor especially thrilling, nor especially long, nor especially short, etc. Despite that so many take pleasure in listing the many ingredients they deem ‘essential’ for a movie to be described as noir, the reality is that the possibilities to play around with the elements allows for remarkable freedom for writers and directors. Anthony Mann is a name that should be very familiar with any self described noir buff, having directing more than a handful, among them brilliant gems such as Side Street and Border Incident. Much like in the latter of the the two mentioned pictures, the director takes noir by the horns and creates a sharp, tough story...

A piece of technology that is frequently the bane of many scriptwriters, Ryan looks at cinema’s sometimes awkward usage of the mobile phone…
Buried is remarkable. Horrifying in concept, and brilliant in execution. With little more than an actor, a wooden box and a few small props, director Rodrigo Cortés has created a film more terrifying than an entire shelf full of torture porn horror, and possibly one of most thrilling movies I've seen so far this year.
Ryan Reynolds is excellent as the luckless truck driver who wakes up in a wooden box six feet under, and it's his haunted face, dimly lit and filthy, that carries the entire film.
What's notable about Buried is its absolute commitment to its premise. Where the not entirely dissimilar Devil, which we reviewed the week before last, diluted its 'evil in a lift' scenario with a 'detective on the case' subplot,...

He Walked by Night was a "B" movie released by Eagle Lion Films in late 1948 and early 1949. The credited director is Alfred L. Werker, but no one disputes that the actual director is the masterful Anthony Mann (who apparently took over production soon after it was begun). The movie was part of a series of increasingly accomplished noirs by Mann, including Railraoded! (1947), Desperate (1947), T-Men (1947), Raw Deal (1948), and Border Incident (1949). It's my favorite of the series; it manages to perfect the "docudrama" style begun in T-Men and Raw Deal, and it contains some of the most striking cinematography of the decade, creating a gripping combination of procedural and suspense. There are public domain videos available, but MGM/UA released on a good, quality DVD in 2003, which is still in print.
What It's About

The past several years have seen a resurgence in interest in the Film Noir genre, not just in recreations via a host of films, but in the classics that started it all. That interest has spawned a series of releases on DVD, and The Film Noir Classic Collection Vol. 5 is filled with treats.
You might expect that we would be reaching by the time we got to the fifth installment, a set with eight films, but in some sense the opposite may be true here.
While not the biggest names in the genre, the set gives us some true favorites, as well as some great actors.
Cornered (1945):

Rating (out of 5): ****
This has been quite a summer for film noir on DVD. In addition to the Columbia Noir set that just arrived, now Warner Home Video releases a new eight-film box set, featuring at least three long-awaited and essential classics. First up is Anthony Mann's Desperate (1947), which is the first of three "B" noirs Mann released over the course of one year. It was followed by Railroaded! and then his groundbreaking T-Men, upon which he collaborated with the great cinematographer John Alton and reached new heights in the use of darkness and shadow. While Desperate isn't quite at the same level, it does have Mann's sense of coiled violence, just waiting to unload.

Film Noir Classic Collection: Vol. 5, has dusted off eight films of the celebrated genre and adapted them to DVD format. Collections like these, which bring older films to newer light, are godsends regardless (to a degree) of which films are selected, because as timeless as some of these stories and performances might be, the barrier of being stuck in an old format can bury them forever. And these stories deserve to be told. If you watch a few well made noir thrillers you will no doubt see the seeds that were planted in the heads of crime-thriller filmmakers the likes of Martin Scorsese or Michael Mann. Though there are better films in the noir genre that this collection could have culminated, there are also a lot worse. Any fan of noir films or old mysteries and thrillers will be pleased at what this box set has to offer.

Happily Noir fans can count their lucky stars that Warner Brothers continues their fine collection. We even get .real. DVDs and not DVD-Rs from the Archives Collection. However, the special features suffer from the laws of diminishing returns. Merriam Webster (online) defines film noir as .a type of crime film featuring cynical malevolent characters in a sleazy setting and an ominous atmosphere that is conveyed by shadowy photography and foreboding background music.. Certainly all the films in this set meets (or exceeds) that definition. Some of them haven.t aged well, but others are still as shocking as they were when they first darkened theaters. Director Anthony Mann begins his noir series with Desperate (and would eventually carry...

When you scrape away the death obsessed subtext and technicalities of the process, watching and loving horror films should be just plain fun, exhilarating fun, a complete escape into another parallel world that echoes our own.
