The central joke of Betty Thomas' 1995 hit comedy "The Brady Bunch Movie" and of Arlene Sanford's 1996 follow-up "A Very Brady Sequel" was that they were set in the present, but the Bradys themselves were caught in a strange cultural time-warp. Sherwood Schwartz's original "The Brady Bunch" sitcom ran from 1969 to 1974, and the adapters of the "Brady Bunch" films felt that the titular family needed to stay there. As such, the Bradys still dressed and behaved like they were in an ultra-wholesome, ultra-artificial TV sitcom, not perceiving that the world had changed since 1970. This allowed "The Brady Bunch Movie" and "A Very Brady Sequel" to serve as clever meta-commentaries. How would 1990s Americans react if they encountered 1970s sitcom characters in real life?

Being a kid on a sitcom is tough. If you manage to dodge addiction issues and kleptomaniacal parents, one thing will still always be gunning for you: Father Time. When sitcoms center around a family with at least one young child, a decent percentage of its humor usually comes from the young kid saying impossibly pithy lines crafted by adults.

Chicago – Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arawaka were found dead in their New Mexico home on February 26th. Arawaka died of a rare lung infection, the 95-year-old Hackman succumbed to natural causes. Photographer Joe Arce captured this Exclusive Portrait of Hackman in 2000.

The mystery and circumstances surrounding the couple’s death stayed in the headlines for weeks. They both had been deceased for several days before being discovered, and at first is was speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning might have been the culprit. But as the investigation continued, it was determined that Ms. Arawaka had died first on or around February 11th of a rare lung infection, and Hackman … suffering from Alzheimer’s disease … died one week later.

Since getting his big break crafting jokes for Bette Midler in the early 1970s, Emmy-winning comedy writer and personality Bruce Vilanch has found success writing for the small screen and stage. But by his own admission, the scribe behind 25 Academy Award ceremonies and more than his fair share of Miss Universe and USA pageants has also penned some real flops.

In his new book, “It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time: The Worst TV Shows in History and Other Things I Wrote,” Vilanch walks readers through some of the most ill-conceived projects he’s been attached to over the years — from 1978’s “The Star Wars Holiday Special” to the now infamous 1989 Oscars ceremony that opened with Rob Lowe and Snow White pirouetting to “Proud Mary.”

As fans celebrated the film mastery of the late Gene Hackman over the past week, some pondered the sliding-door moment that could have changed his acting career forever. After all, if sitcom producer Sherwood Schwartz had his way, the unknown Broadway actor would have been cast as Mike Brady, patriarch of The Brady Bunch.

Hackman was Schwartz’s first choice for the role, but ABC executives rejected the idea. Who had heard of Gene Hackman? They wanted someone with more experience like Robert Reed, who TV viewers knew well from several seasons starring in ‘60s legal drama The Defenders. Hackman, on the other hand, only had one-shot appearances on shows like I Spy, The FBI and Route 66. Ironically, he also guested twice on The Defenders.

Lucky for everyone, Hackman didn’t get the part, clearing the way for an Academy Award just a couple of years later for The French Connection.

The entire premise of Full House is based on the kids’ mom dying. When Pam Tanner, mother to DJ, Stephanie and Michelle, is killed in a car accident, Danny Tanner enlists the help of his brother-in-law Jesse and best pal Joey to help him raise the girls. Baby Michelle would be too young to remember Mom, but what about DJ (10 years old!) and Stephanie (5)? You’d think the subject of their missing mom would come up once in a while, right?

Original “Shōgun” director Jerry London just took a samurai sword to FX’s acclaimed remake series.

London, who helmed episodes of “The Brady Bunch,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” before directing the nine-hour “Shōgun” limited series in 1980, told The Hollywood Reporter that the FX/Hulu version was not made for an “American audience.” London was baffled by “Shōgun” making awards history: The series set the record for most Emmys wins in a single season with 18 total, and also became the first Japanese-language series to win for Best Drama Series. Anna Sawai became the first Asian winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

London’s “Shōgun,” which aired on NBC in September 1980, earned 14 Emmy nominations including Best Limited Series (or Special). The five-episode miniseries later won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama. Both “Shōgun” series are based on James Clavell’s bestselling 1975 novel.

The recent first season of the FX series Shogun has continued its awards success into 2025, with the acclaimed show prevailing at Saturday’s WGA Awards and as one of the big winners at last month’s Golden Globes. But a key figure on a previous adaptation of the book does not quite understand the appeal of the recent version.

Jerry London, who directed the nine-hour Shogun that aired on NBC in September 1980, remembers his project as challenging, and says that producers initially pushed for a director of Japanese descent. “I had to convince them that I knew what I was doing,” London tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So after about a month or so, they accepted me and everything went well. But it was a very difficult show to do, and it turned out great.”

Everyone seems to love Clean Slate, the sitcom with “a trans story right when it’s needed the most.” But comedian George Wallace had a very different idea in mind when he first pitched the show to legendary producer Norman Lear — he wanted to update classic ‘70s sitcom Sanford and Son.

“Sanford and Son makes everybody feel good,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter. “Just hearing the music, already that smile comes on your face. So I said, ‘Let me go to Norman Lear.’ I had known him for 30 years, and I said, ‘I want to reboot Sanford and Son.’ He says, ‘Are you kidding? You can’t do that show. Get a twist and come back.’”

For most of its five seasons, acknowledges sitcom star Barry Williams, The Brady Bunch was “the whitest show on television.”

But years before words like diversity, equity and inclusion became political hot potatoes, the show’s producers made “very deliberate attempts to try and integrate the show,” Williams said on a recent episode of The Brady Bros recap podcast, per Entertainment Weekly.

“There were a couple of episodes that specifically dealt with that,” said Williams. “And we see this a lot, especially when there are crowds and then maybe there are two or three friends, we’ll see different ethnicities and et cetera.”

Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.

Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

The "Roseanne" episode "Sherwood Schwartz: A Loving Tribute" was, as the title implies, a tribute to one of the most successful sitcom creators to play the game. Schwartz, of course, is the mastermind behind both "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch," and he worked as a writer on shows like "My Favorite Martian," "The Red Skelton Show," and "I Married Joan." Schwartz is a giant of the televised medium, and many TV shows owe him a debt; he provided several generations of goofy comedians with inspiration.

"Gilligan's Island" was particularly well-known among the public, partly because of its indelibly dumb humor, and partly because of endless reruns that continued through the 1980s. Every American knew the premise of "Gilligan's Island" and every sitcom writer wanted to emulate its success. It stood to reason that the makers of "Roseanne" — a blue-collar sitcom — would want to pay it, and Sherwood Schwartz, homage.

Fans see too many severed ties for the show to clump together the original five spouses. So, fans think another option is in the wind. Whether we realize it or not, we are likely watching a competition this season for the TLC stars to grab the most interest from the viewers.

Then fans think this will eventually determine what, if anything, they offer for a future show. So far, it seems Kody and Robyn Brown haven’t hit that place yet where fans are willing to advocate for them to continue.

In the "Baywatch" episode "Now Sit Right Back and You'll Hear a Tale", Eddie (Billy Warlock) and Shauni (Erika Eleniak) are out in the ocean trying to rescue a beleaguered jet skier, when they discover an island that they hadn't ever noticed before. Going ashore, they find that two people have been living on this island, stranded far from shore, for decades. They are Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) and Gilligan (Bob Denver), the same characters seen on the 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island." 

Wait, what? Aren't those fictional characters? Gilligan and Mary Ann explain that their experiences being stranded on the uncharted desert isle are very much real. Shauni marvels, "I thought you were just a TV show!" But everyone sort of lets the unreality of the situation slip past. No further questions are asked about how Gilligan and Mary Ann were filmed or how their footage was converted into a 1964 CBS comedy series.

The Brady Bunch has risen from the television dead several times over the past 50 years, but you can blame only one reincarnation on Thirtysomething. That’s 1990’s The Bradys (or Bradysomething as some critics derided it), an ill-advised attempt to turn the kid-centric sitcom into a sophisticated yuppie drama. Spoiler alert: Like all Brady spin-offs, reboots and cash grabs, it was absolutely terrible.

What was the new show about? As always, viewers could turn to the theme song for the lowdown. Even though the reboot only lasted a month before it was canceled, it somehow went through three versions of the song — impressive! The last one is the best, with histrionic Florence Henderson warbling an impossibly earnest update of the lyrics:

Gwen Van Dam, a veteran character actress of seven decades whose 140 credits spanned television, film and the Los Angeles stage, died Dec. 19 at her home in West LA. She was 96.

Per previous reporting attributed to her son Dirk Smillie, the cause of death was a recurrence of cancer.

Throughout her long-tenured career, Van Dam appeared in 1978’s Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis, 1994’s Star Trek Generations with Patrick Stewart, the romantic war drama Coming Home featuring Jane Fonda and Jon Voight and the Sidney Poitier-helmed Gene Wilder pic Stir Crazy.

Among her television credits are illustrious series like Days of Our Lives, Gilmore Girls, Knots Landing, ER, Moonlighting, The Brady Bunch, Maude, Owen Marshall, New Girl, Modern Family and Criminal Minds.

On the music video side of things, she appeared in visual works for U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Panic! At the Disco and heavy metal band Mastodon.

The 1980s was truly an era of world-class sitcoms, but many of the decade's brightest series have faded from our cultural memory. Good Morning America is already getting into the holiday spirit. Many of the show’s co-hosts are appearing together in an online Christmas card. While doing so, they are also paying homage to a recent viral TikTok trend.

The GMA Crew Came Together For An Out-Of-The-Box Christmas Card

The card was released on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. Quite a few familiar faces from Good Morning America appeared on the card.

This included anchors Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan, and George Stephanopolous. Meteorologist Ginger Zee and entertainment correspondent Lara Spencer also appeared in the card.

In addition to revealing the card on Good Morning America, the Christmas card was also uploaded to various Instagram accounts, including Michael Strahan’s. The GMA co-hosts also showed a behind-the-scenes look at how the card was made.

The card featured the various TV personalities making up a checkerboard of portraits, each with a holiday theme.

The ‘70s gave the world David Bowie, Star Wars, and, most importantly, classic sitcoms like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Brady Bunch. Christopher Knight doesn’t sound that enthusiastic about being a child actor, even though he benefited from the “wholesome environment” on the Brady Bunch set, he said this week on the I Choose Me with Jennie Garth podcast. It’s not that being gainfully employed as Peter Brady was so bad, but “isn’t that your parents’ job to work, not you?”

One reason Knight had to work in the first place was because his actor dad was having trouble landing roles, he explained. With theater jobs in scarce supply, Knight’s father found an agent for Christopher and his older brother, Garth. To everyone’s surprise (because Garth was the outgoing one), Christopher was the one who booked work, including his role on Brady Bunch.

Susan Olsen, known for her role as Cindy Brady on The Brady Bunch, recently revealed on the WalkAway Campaign podcast that a planned revival of the iconic sitcom was scrapped because of her support for Donald Trump and her controversial political views.

Now 63, Olsen detailed that the reboot was in the works at CBS Studios, featuring her and her fellow cast members as adults, with Olsen portraying a libertarian podcaster. She expressed excitement about the show’s treatment, likening it to the successful reboot of Roseanne.

However, Olsen stated that CBS raised concerns after learning of a 2016 incident in which she reportedly sent anti-gay remarks to actor Leon Acord-Whiting following his appearance on her political radio show, LA Talk Radio’s Two Chicks Talkin’ Politics.

This incident led to her termination from the radio station, which issued a statement emphasizing its intolerance for hateful speech.
