The central joke of Betty Thomas' 1995 hit comedy "The Brady Bunch Movie" and of Arlene Sanford's 1996 follow-up "A Very Brady Sequel" was that they were set in the present, but the Bradys themselves were caught in a strange cultural time-warp. Sherwood Schwartz's original "The Brady Bunch" sitcom ran from 1969 to 1974, and the adapters of the "Brady Bunch" films felt that the titular family needed to stay there. As such, the Bradys still dressed and behaved like they were in an ultra-wholesome, ultra-artificial TV sitcom, not perceiving that the world had changed since 1970. This allowed "The Brady Bunch Movie" and "A Very Brady Sequel" to serve as clever meta-commentaries. How would 1990s Americans react if they encountered 1970s sitcom characters in real life?
The plot of "A Very Brady Sequel" involved Carol Brady's (Shelley Long) presumed-dead husband Roy Martin (Tim Matheson) returning to the family to reclaim his wife.

Being a kid on a sitcom is tough. If you manage to dodge addiction issues and kleptomaniacal parents, one thing will still always be gunning for you: Father Time. When sitcoms center around a family with at least one young child, a decent percentage of its humor usually comes from the young kid saying impossibly pithy lines crafted by adults.
But as the kid gets older, they often get less cute and their character is forced to change. So, where do all those snarky remarks and cutesy moments go? The solution is usually the same: bring in a brand-new cute kid regardless how much shoe-horning you need to do.
It’s happened a lot in sitcoms — like, dozens of them — but here are five of the best examples...

From 1987 to 1995, you'd struggle to find someone who hadn't watched Full House. It was the sitcom that encapsulated the era and became The Brady Bunch of its time. Having a nostalgia factor and outstanding syndication numbers, it came as no surprise that its sequel, Fuller House, was optioned by Netflix in 2016. Compared to other Netflix shows, Fuller House had a good run, spanning 75 episodes across five seasons. However, it didn't quite match the numbers of Full House, which ran for 192 episodes across eight seasons. More importantly, the series finale didn't feel like the right ending...

Chicago – Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arawaka were found dead in their New Mexico home on February 26th. Arawaka died of a rare lung infection, the 95-year-old Hackman succumbed to natural causes. Photographer Joe Arce captured this Exclusive Portrait of Hackman in 2000.
The mystery and circumstances surrounding the couple’s death stayed in the headlines for weeks. They both had been deceased for several days before being discovered, and at first is was speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning might have been the culprit. But as the investigation continued, it was determined that Ms. Arawaka had died first on or around February 11th of a rare lung infection, and Hackman … suffering from Alzheimer’s disease … died one week later.

Since getting his big break crafting jokes for Bette Midler in the early 1970s, Emmy-winning comedy writer and personality Bruce Vilanch has found success writing for the small screen and stage. But by his own admission, the scribe behind 25 Academy Award ceremonies and more than his fair share of Miss Universe and USA pageants has also penned some real flops.
In his new book, “It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time: The Worst TV Shows in History and Other Things I Wrote,” Vilanch walks readers through some of the most ill-conceived projects he’s been attached to over the years — from 1978’s “The Star Wars Holiday Special” to the now infamous 1989 Oscars ceremony that opened with Rob Lowe and Snow White pirouetting to “Proud Mary.”

As fans celebrated the film mastery of the late Gene Hackman over the past week, some pondered the sliding-door moment that could have changed his acting career forever. After all, if sitcom producer Sherwood Schwartz had his way, the unknown Broadway actor would have been cast as Mike Brady, patriarch of The Brady Bunch.
Hackman was Schwartz’s first choice for the role, but ABC executives rejected the idea. Who had heard of Gene Hackman? They wanted someone with more experience like Robert Reed, who TV viewers knew well from several seasons starring in ‘60s legal drama The Defenders. Hackman, on the other hand, only had one-shot appearances on shows like I Spy, The FBI and Route 66. Ironically, he also guested twice on The Defenders.
Lucky for everyone, Hackman didn’t get the part, clearing the way for an Academy Award just a couple of years later for The French Connection.

The entire premise of Full House is based on the kids’ mom dying. When Pam Tanner, mother to DJ, Stephanie and Michelle, is killed in a car accident, Danny Tanner enlists the help of his brother-in-law Jesse and best pal Joey to help him raise the girls. Baby Michelle would be too young to remember Mom, but what about DJ (10 years old!) and Stephanie (5)? You’d think the subject of their missing mom would come up once in a while, right?
Turns out Dead Mom Amnesia is a common complaint among Full House fans. Andrea Barber and Jodie Sweetin, who played Kimmy Gibbler and Stephanie Tanner on the show, say ignoring dead mothers doesn’t make sense to them either on a recent episode of their podcast, How Rude, Tanneritos!

Original “Shōgun” director Jerry London just took a samurai sword to FX’s acclaimed remake series.
London, who helmed episodes of “The Brady Bunch,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” before directing the nine-hour “Shōgun” limited series in 1980, told The Hollywood Reporter that the FX/Hulu version was not made for an “American audience.” London was baffled by “Shōgun” making awards history: The series set the record for most Emmys wins in a single season with 18 total, and also became the first Japanese-language series to win for Best Drama Series. Anna Sawai became the first Asian winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
London’s “Shōgun,” which aired on NBC in September 1980, earned 14 Emmy nominations including Best Limited Series (or Special). The five-episode miniseries later won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama. Both “Shōgun” series are based on James Clavell’s bestselling 1975 novel.

The recent first season of the FX series Shogun has continued its awards success into 2025, with the acclaimed show prevailing at Saturday’s WGA Awards and as one of the big winners at last month’s Golden Globes. But a key figure on a previous adaptation of the book does not quite understand the appeal of the recent version.
Jerry London, who directed the nine-hour Shogun that aired on NBC in September 1980, remembers his project as challenging, and says that producers initially pushed for a director of Japanese descent. “I had to convince them that I knew what I was doing,” London tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So after about a month or so, they accepted me and everything went well. But it was a very difficult show to do, and it turned out great.”

Image Source: Paramount Pictures Fans of The Brady Bunch celebrated the TV show’s 25th anniversary with news that the iconic sitcom family was finally going to get its own movie. We celebrate the 30th anniversary of that movie’s release. (We dare you to do the math and not feel old.) Aside from a few cameo appearances by the original Brady Bunch cast members, director Betty Thomas was working with an entirely new cast. That included Gary Cole, who took over the role of Mike Brady from the late Robert Reed. When we spoke to Cole at the time of the movie’s release, he told us his goal was for his performance to be an honest homage to the work Reed had done on the original series. Super Bowl Lix on Sunday will bring in the biggest TV audience of the year — and, following the game, the biggest audience ever for Fox’s game show The Floor.
Those are pretty much immutable facts in the TV landscape. The Super Bowl is, by enormous margins, the most-watched single telecast of any given year. And the show that airs after it gets a big audience as well, typically placing among the top five entertainment telecasts on network or cable TV that season.
The post-game slot has been a showcase for decades, but it wasn’t always that way. In the early years of the Super Bowl, whichever network aired the game (CBS and NBC shared NFL rights back then) went to its regular Sunday night programming afterward — in three of the Super Bowl’s first four years, that meant an episode of Lassie on CBS.

Everyone seems to love Clean Slate, the sitcom with “a trans story right when it’s needed the most.” But comedian George Wallace had a very different idea in mind when he first pitched the show to legendary producer Norman Lear — he wanted to update classic ‘70s sitcom Sanford and Son.
“Sanford and Son makes everybody feel good,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter. “Just hearing the music, already that smile comes on your face. So I said, ‘Let me go to Norman Lear.’ I had known him for 30 years, and I said, ‘I want to reboot Sanford and Son.’ He says, ‘Are you kidding? You can’t do that show. Get a twist and come back.’”
Lear knew a little something about Sanford and Son — he developed the show as NBC’s answer to All in the Family. While the sitcom doesn’t show up much in syndication these days,...

For most of its five seasons, acknowledges sitcom star Barry Williams, The Brady Bunch was “the whitest show on television.”
But years before words like diversity, equity and inclusion became political hot potatoes, the show’s producers made “very deliberate attempts to try and integrate the show,” Williams said on a recent episode of The Brady Bros recap podcast, per Entertainment Weekly.
“There were a couple of episodes that specifically dealt with that,” said Williams. “And we see this a lot, especially when there are crowds and then maybe there are two or three friends, we’ll see different ethnicities and et cetera.”
Soooo… producers’ efforts to be more inclusive consisted of people of color existing in background shots? Well, it was the early 1970s, when only a handful of non-white actors appeared on network shows at all. Guess they had to start somewhere.

Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.
On a picturesque ranch in Dallas, Texas, the family used their money, connections, and cunning to bat away threats from outside and within. Whatever threats that rival oilman, spurned lovers, or wannabe politicians think they can pose, "Dallas" always reminds us that there's nothing stronger -- or more dangerous -- than family.
Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

The "Roseanne" episode "Sherwood Schwartz: A Loving Tribute" was, as the title implies, a tribute to one of the most successful sitcom creators to play the game. Schwartz, of course, is the mastermind behind both "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch," and he worked as a writer on shows like "My Favorite Martian," "The Red Skelton Show," and "I Married Joan." Schwartz is a giant of the televised medium, and many TV shows owe him a debt; he provided several generations of goofy comedians with inspiration.
"Gilligan's Island" was particularly well-known among the public, partly because of its indelibly dumb humor, and partly because of endless reruns that continued through the 1980s. Every American knew the premise of "Gilligan's Island" and every sitcom writer wanted to emulate its success. It stood to reason that the makers of "Roseanne" — a blue-collar sitcom — would want to pay it, and Sherwood Schwartz, homage.

Sister Wives stars Kody Brown, Robyn Brown, and the three ex-wives need to air their entertaining laundry as fans complain that their TLC show offers less entertainment in each passing episode.
Fans see too many severed ties for the show to clump together the original five spouses. So, fans think another option is in the wind. Whether we realize it or not, we are likely watching a competition this season for the TLC stars to grab the most interest from the viewers.
Then fans think this will eventually determine what, if anything, they offer for a future show. So far, it seems Kody and Robyn Brown haven’t hit that place yet where fans are willing to advocate for them to continue.

In the "Baywatch" episode "Now Sit Right Back and You'll Hear a Tale", Eddie (Billy Warlock) and Shauni (Erika Eleniak) are out in the ocean trying to rescue a beleaguered jet skier, when they discover an island that they hadn't ever noticed before. Going ashore, they find that two people have been living on this island, stranded far from shore, for decades. They are Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) and Gilligan (Bob Denver), the same characters seen on the 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island."
Wait, what? Aren't those fictional characters? Gilligan and Mary Ann explain that their experiences being stranded on the uncharted desert isle are very much real. Shauni marvels, "I thought you were just a TV show!" But everyone sort of lets the unreality of the situation slip past. No further questions are asked about how Gilligan and Mary Ann were filmed or how their footage was converted into a 1964 CBS comedy series.

The Brady Bunch has risen from the television dead several times over the past 50 years, but you can blame only one reincarnation on Thirtysomething. That’s 1990’s The Bradys (or Bradysomething as some critics derided it), an ill-advised attempt to turn the kid-centric sitcom into a sophisticated yuppie drama. Spoiler alert: Like all Brady spin-offs, reboots and cash grabs, it was absolutely terrible.
What was the new show about? As always, viewers could turn to the theme song for the lowdown. Even though the reboot only lasted a month before it was canceled, it somehow went through three versions of the song — impressive! The last one is the best, with histrionic Florence Henderson warbling an impossibly earnest update of the lyrics:
Here's the story
Of the family Brady

As Fuller House, The Conners and Frasier — by that, we mean the crappier Frasier — have illustrated, no sitcom is ever truly finished, so long as it’s still profitable and the majority of its cast members haven’t been canceled.
There’s certainly been a glut of sitcom reboots in recent years. I mean, does anyone even remember that they brought back Murphy Brown for an 11th season?
A lot of people might assume that this is a new trend, and a symptom of our current nostalgia-obsessed culture, but these throwback cash-grabs go way, way back. Some sitcom reboots have been completely forgotten about at this point, such as…

To the eyes of this author, there are four perfect TV theme songs in the history of the medium. For instrumentals, the two best themes are Jack Marshall's surf-like monster music he composed for "The Munsters" and Danny Elfman's Platonic-ideal-of-a-haunted-house music for "Tales from the Crypt."
For theme songs with lyrics, the two best of all time were, not coincidentally, written by Sherwood Schwartz. He and Frank de Vol composed the handy, catchy theme for Schwartz's own sitcom "The Brady Bunch," while Schwartz teamed with George Wyle to compose "The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle." These two theme songs, each only about 60 seconds, managed to explain -- in rhyme -- the premise of their respective shows succinctly while also introducing each of the characters. Additionally, the songs are catchy earworms that burrow deep into the brains of listeners, latching onto the memory and never letting go. When I'm in my 90s,...

What is the deal with the "Seinfeld" opening theme music? What? They couldn't afford to record an actual theme sequence? Remember "The Brady Bunch"? And how that theme song explained everything you needed to know about the show? "The Brady Bunch" even had a handy 3x3 grid of all the characters, so you could keep everyone straight. "Seinfeld" just had some bass grooves and some guy beatboxing, just kind of freestylin' it. You'd think they could at least write some lyrics. "Here's Jerry. He's neurotic and selfish. Here's George. He's neurotic and selfish." Kinda writes itself!
Jerry Seinfeld impersonations aside, the "Seinfeld" theme music was always unique. It was constructed out of beatboxing, some electronic harmonica-like noises, and a lot of electric bass, and it was never the same from episode to episode. The music was performed by musician Jonathan Wolff, who also composed music for sitcoms like "Who's the Boss?,...

For funny actors and aspiring stand-up comics, landing a long-running sitcom role is like winning the lottery. You get guaranteed work for years and, even in the streaming era, the chance for a lifetime of residual checks. But some sitcom stars insist on biting the humor hand that feeds them. Here are five actors from successful TV comedies who wish they had never landed their roles in the first place…
1 Chevy Chase, ‘Community’
Chase, who had been irrelevant for years before finding a new generation of fans on Community, got himself canned for using a racial slur on the set. Fine, no problem, Chase told Marc Maron on the Wtf podcast — he didn’t want to be there anyway. “I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately,” Chase explained. “I felt a little bit constrained. Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good.

Actor, writer, model, and spokesperson, Suzanne Somers was an iconic star with many talents, including a certain '90s sitcom that doesn't get spoken about enough. Starting with small roles in TV and movies, Somers' career took off when she co-starred in the ‘70s sitcom Three’s Company, playing Christmas "Chrissy" Snow alongside Joyce Dewitt and John Ritter. However, following a salary dispute that would lead to Somers departing Three's Company after season 5, it looked like acting career had come to an end. Thankfully, that was not the case.
Most people associate Somers' '90s work with being the spokesperson for the exercise equipment ThighMaster, but she also graced the screen in 1991 with the arrival of a new family sitcom. This time, Somers took on the role of a TV mom — one that would have a generation of young people seeing her in a whole new light. With Somers' death...

Family stories have been a television staple for as long as there’s been TV.
They tug at our heartstrings, make us laugh, and remind us that, no matter how chaotic things get, family — whether by blood or by choice — is at the core of the human experience.
But what exactly constitutes “family” has changed dramatically over the years, and television has kept pace, reflecting those shifts in compelling, sometimes groundbreaking ways.
Let’s dive in together and explore how these shows have mirrored our evolving views on what it means to be a family.

Back in the early days of TV, family dramas were practically an extension of a Hallmark card: wholesome, harmonious, and just a little too perfect.
Shows like Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best, and The Brady Bunch painted a picture of the ideal nuclear family.

The 1980s was truly an era of world-class sitcoms, but many of the decade's brightest series have faded from our cultural memory. While iconic shows like The Golden Girls and Cheers undoubtedly made television history, they're part of a larger wave of comedies that helped propel the sitcom format into new territory.
For decades, sitcoms like I Love Lucy, Good Times, and The Brady Bunch centered on the concept of family. There were some exceptions, but these shows, like Dream of Jeannie or Gilligan's Island, were often built around a gimmick. The 80s changed that, opening windows to a plethora of different environments. The sitcoms of the era explored the relationships between coworkers, neighbors, and friends. On top of this, they eschewed flashy premises, putting faith in sharp writing and well-rounded characters.

The ‘70s gave the world David Bowie, Star Wars, and, most importantly, classic sitcoms like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Brady Bunch. Memorable for their laugh tracks, zany characters, and a never-ending list of feel-good moments, these trinkets of nostalgia bring audiences to simpler times when life wasn’t so complicated. But true to the saying—time’s change, people change. These classic ‘70s sitcoms remain iconic amid today’s film and TV options. However, they are not without their shortcomings.

Think about the holiday season, and chances are you’re picturing scenes ripped straight from a TV show.
Snow falls gently outside as everyone gathers around a perfectly decorated tree.
There’s a table groaning under the weight of a flawless feast, family drama magically resolved before the pie comes out, and those charming holiday mishaps that somehow end in a heartfelt toast.
(Ricardo Hubbs/Crown Media)
It’s pure magic — or so television would have us believe.
In real life, the gravy is cold, the turkey’s dry, and someone’s crying in the bathroom because Uncle Jim brought up politics.
Yet, thanks to TV, we all secretly hope for that picture-perfect holiday.
Where did this all start, and why are we so hooked on these unrealistic holiday ideals? Let’s unwrap the gift that keeps on giving — TV’s influence on our holiday expectations.

Christopher Knight doesn’t sound that enthusiastic about being a child actor, even though he benefited from the “wholesome environment” on the Brady Bunch set, he said this week on the I Choose Me with Jennie Garth podcast. It’s not that being gainfully employed as Peter Brady was so bad, but “isn’t that your parents’ job to work, not you?”
One reason Knight had to work in the first place was because his actor dad was having trouble landing roles, he explained. With theater jobs in scarce supply, Knight’s father found an agent for Christopher and his older brother, Garth. To everyone’s surprise (because Garth was the outgoing one), Christopher was the one who booked work, including his role on Brady Bunch.
It was a good thing that young Knight delivered a regular paycheck since his home life was “chaotic and not abundant.” How bad was it?...

On HGTV’s 2019 series A Very Brady Renovation, the Studio City mid-century ranch home that served as the establishing shot of the Brady Bunch house was gutted and remodeled to look like the interiors from the beloved sitcom. Then in 2023, socialite (and super Brady fan) Tina Trahan bought the property for $3.2 million and has been obsessively filling it with every prop and decorative item ever captured on the series — 300 “Easter eggs” in all. I toured the house and can attest it is one of the trippiest experiences I’ve ever encountered. Salt and pepper shakers, handwritten birthday cards, night table reading: it’s all exactly as it appeared on the show (as are the rooms).
Now Trahan is mulling what to do with her creation. She’s enlisted Brady Bunch cast members Barry “Greg” Williams and Christopher “Peter” Knight (himself in the decor space — his Christopher Knight Home collection chairs...

For many years, fans of "Gilligan's Island" heard the rumors that actress Tina Louise, who played the glamorous movie star Ginger on the series, openly hated the show. These rumors were founded mostly on the fact that Louise, after "Gilligan's Island" went off the air in 1967, refused to reunite with her old co-stars for any of the follow-up TV movies or animated spinoffs. Everyone else returned for those projects, but Louise stayed far away.
Additionally, stories from the set detailed a strained working relationship between Louise and star Bob Denver. Some might know the story about how Louise signed a contract allowing her to be listed last in the credits, forcing the writers of the "Gilligan's Island" theme song to refer to the Professor and Mary Ann as "and the rest!" According to one star of the series, a revival of The Brady Bunch came close to happening, only to be squashed before getting to production. Allegedly, this was due in part to Susan Olsen publicly expressing her political opinions.
In the classic sitcom, Olsen played Cindy Brady, the youngest of Carol's (Florence Henderson) three girls. During a recent interview for the "Walk Away Campaign" podcast (per Vanity Fair), Olsen said that CBS Studios had a planned Brady Bunch revival series in the works. The show was said to have followed Cindy and her siblings, now as adults, with Olsen's character portrayed as a libertarian podcaster. However, it's alleged that the network wound up scrapping the project due to Olsen's conservative views, particularly about her support for Donald Trump and criticism of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The blended family from The Brady Bunch were not as popular during their original run on ABC as they are today. The ’70s sitcom became a favorite among children and teenagers, who loved to see the sibling dynamics between the three brothers and three sisters. However, they apparently shared more than sibling love off-screen.

The Brady Bunch saw Robert Reed’s Mike Brady and Florence Henderson’s Carol Martin marry each other, both having been married earlier with kids. Mike has three sons—Greg, Peter, and Bobby—and Carol has three daughters—Marcia, Jan, and Cindy. The couple adopts each other’s children and the sitcom explores this unconventional big family.
