In Tenebras: Into the Darkness begins with text telling us that at the end of World War II, a German U-boat was seized off the coast of Gibraltar. Its contents were hidden somewhere in the miles of tunnels under the fortress. We see part of that, soldiers moving a crate through underground tunnels and shooting an unarmed German Pow as he begs for his life. More text tells us that what we are about to see is based on a true story.
In the present day, Captain Shaw and Major Cummings direct a rescue operation in Gibraltar harbour, saving several hostages from bad guys who we’re eventually told were terrorists planning a bombing.
Elsewhere Hank (Anthony Loddo) has reconnected with his half-brother Josh (Johan Wickholm). It seems their grandfather was...

Originally published in 1918, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Land That Time Forgot has inspired multiple adaptations, most notably Kevin Connor’s 1974 film. Now, the story returns to the screen courtesy of The Asylum, who previously tackled the tale in 2009. Can this new adaptation deliver a mix of nostalgia and modern sensibilities, while staying true to the spirit of the original novel?
The movie opens with a tense and chaotic sequence as the crew of a Russian submarine launches a surprise attack on an Australian naval vessel in the Bering Sea. The reasons behind the attack as well as the Aussie’s presence so far from home remain unclear, but the ship is destroyed.

The Primevals was a film I thought I’d never get to see. Tracing its roots back to a short filmed in the 1960s, Raiders of the Stone Ring, and through the late 70s and early 80s it constantly seemed to be in some form of preproduction, either by the project’s driving force, stop-motion artist David Allen, or via one of producer Charles Band’s companies. It got frequent mentions in Famous Monsters of Filmland and even a cover story in Cinefantastique. But apart from some footage shot around 1978, nothing came of it until 1994 when the film’s live-action footage was shot in Band’s Romanian studios and the Dolomite Mountains in Italy.

Roger Dicken, the Oscar-nominated British special effects artist, sculptor and model maker known for his work on Alien and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, has died. He was 84.
Dicken died Feb. 18 at his home in North Wales, Mick Cooper, a friend of more than five decades, told The Hollywood Reporter.
On his first film, Dicken was a member of the effects team for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968); later, he created and operated the dinosaur puppets seen in The Land That Time Forgot (1974).
Dicken sculpted several prehistoric creatures — plus a pair of full-sized pterodactyl feet — for the stop-motion adventure tale When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970), written and directed by Val Guest for Hammer Films. He and American animator Jim Danforth shared the Oscar nomination for visual effects.

A few months ago, while covering Hex Studios’ fantasy film throwback The Slave and the Sorcerer, we also mentioned that Hex was also working to “build a new British horror and fantasy studio that’s inspired by the likes of Cannon, Hammer, and Aip”. Now their endeavor has taken a mind-blowing leap forward: Hex Studios has announced they’re working with the family of late producer Milton Subotsky to resurrect Amicus Productions! Hex co-founder Lawrie Brewster is set to be the president of the revived Amicus… and their first project will be exactly the sort of movie Amicus is best remembered for: a horror portmanteau (or anthology) film called In the Grip of Terror!
Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg founded Amicus Productions in the early ’60s, and from 1962 to 1977 they produced nearly thirty films, including Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, Dr. Who and the Daleks, The Skull, The Psychopath,...

“Atlantis: The Lost Empire” producer Don Hahn had an anecdote about the ethos that drove that 2001 animated Disney film’s production. If other Disney animated films, the ones concerned with princesses and magic kingdoms, represent the Fantasyland area of a Disney theme park, the one you reach after passing through the castle, then he wanted “Atlantis” to be the Adventureland movie. This would be one where you turn left.
For “Strange World,” Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 61st (!) feature, they have decided to turn left again. “It’s funny, every time I walk down Main Street, I turn left,” said “Strange World” producer Ron Conli.
“Strange World” is the story of the Clades, led by the rugged adventurer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid). After Jaeger goes missing on an expedition, his son Searcher (Jake Gyllenaal) grows up, maintaining the family name in a different way: he farms a powerful crop that has...

For me it usually starts with the title, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971) has a doozy; provocative and exploitative, it evokes images of rituals, bloodlust, and other sundry delights. And sometimes the stars align, the film more or less living up to the promise of the title, or at least to the promise of the promise.
Released by Cannon Releasing Corp. Stateside in April and by its own Tigon Pictures in the U.K. in July, The Blood on Satan’s Claw didn’t do well; Tigon had a hit with The Witchfinder General (1968) with Vincent Price, and were looking to replicate that success. Regardless of its fate, The Blood on Satan’s Claw is an effective example of folk-horror, killer kids, and some light Satanism, as a treat.

Based upon the classic first novel of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ seven-book Pellucidar series and produced by British genre film company Amicus Productions, At the Earth’s Core (1976) is a star-studded tale of science fantasy complete with dinosaurs, a psychic master race of pteranodon-like monsters, and a caste-like civilization featuring a monkey-faced race who have enslaved the humans who populate the prehistoric land found inside the Earth.
Directed by Kevin Connor (The Land That Time Forgot; The People That Time Forgot; Warlords of the Deep; Motel Hell) and starring Doug McClure (The Land That Time Forgot; The People That Time Forgot; Roots; Humanoids from the Deep), the gorgeous Caroline Munro (The Spy Who Loved Me; Starcrash; Maniac), and the inimitable Peter Cushing, At the Earth’s Core is a fun, kid-oriented special effects extravaganza, with the emphasis on kid-oriented.

With the massive success of Carrie (1976), telekinesis was quickly added to horror filmmakers’ arsenal as a new weapon to terrify audiences. The immense power of the film left some reticent to tackle the subject for fear of falling short; however Brian DePalma stepped up to the plate with The Fury (1978), and that same year fledgling Australian filmmaker Richard Franklin made Patrick, a suspenseful, darkly humorous tale of a nurse and the psychokinetically disposed comatose patient that loves her.
Released on its native soil October 1st, 1978, Patrick was bought up for distribution by over 30 countries after a successful screening at the Cannes Film Festival, easily earning back its $400,000 Aud budget (half of which was chipped in by the Australian Film Commission). More good news followed as Patrick was well received by critics, and rightly so – it’s a tense little beaut with an emphasis on character and scattered shocks throughout.

Well, here we are again, back in Corman waters. Why do we keep coming back? What is the pull of a Roger Corman production that calls to us like a syphilitic siren wailing from the rocks, beckoning us home? My guess is quality chafing the walls of quantity. There are a lot of exploitation movies out there, and most were justified their position on the lower rung of a double bill on a Tuesday night at the drive-in. But un film du Corman is different – he’s always had an innate gift for corralling talent on the rise, and kind enough to foster it on the way down. His turn of the decade monster mash Humanoids from the Deep (1980) is a perfect storm of his wondrous cinematic sensibilities.
And of course I mean ‘wondrous’ as it applies to our station, the gloriously trashy and deliciously weird. Humanoids fits neatly into...

Paul Toombes has played a horror movie antagonist for years, but the wicked ways of his onscreen persona are now trickling into his real life world in 1974’s Madhouse. In 1975’s The Land That Time Forgot, World War I-era castaways wash ashore on Caprona, a place where dinosaurs still stomp the scenery. And in similar fashion to Psycho‘s Norman Bates, Ezra Cobb kills people with his mother in mind in 1974’s Deranged. Kino Lorber recently announced that they are bringing these three diverse films out on Blu-ray in the near future, and we have the trio’s release details for those interested in making them new additions to their collections.

1976 saw the publication of John Brosnan’s excellent book The Horror People. Written during the summer of 1975, it makes interesting reading 40 years down the line. Those who feature prominently in the book – Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Jack Arnold, Michael Carreras, Sam Arkoff, Roy Ward Baker, Freddie Francis, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson and Milton Subotsky – were still alive, as were Ralph Bates, Mario Bava, Jimmy Carreras, John Carradine, Dan Curtis, John Gilling, Robert Fuest, Michael Gough, Val Guest, Ray Milland, Robert Quarry and Michael Ripper, all of whom were given a mention. Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Junior, Michael Reeves and James H Nicholson were not long dead. Hammer, Amicus and American International Pictures were still in existence. George A Romero had yet to achieve his prominence and Stephen King wasn’t even heard of!
Brosnan devoted a chapter to a new British company called Tyburn Films. Founded by the charismatic and ambitious Kevin Francis,...

Godzilla's cinematic return leaves James pondering the power of monster movies and how they give us a sense of perspective...
Feature
Human beings live little lives. We sweat the small stuff. We get bogged down in minor trivialities and teeny-tiny insignificances.
And then, oh my Godzilla, a gargantuan kaiju creature rises up and walks right through it all, stomping all over our little lives and smashing the feeble structures of our civilisation without any difficulty at all. When an almighty entity forces itself into the frame and presents a mortal threat, all the things that are amped up as 'big deals' cease to be 'big deals' as humans get a view of just how altogether small they really are.
By re-adjusting the scales, messing with proportional ratios and shifting paradigms, perspective is wholly altered. This is one of the great things about special effects cinema, or 'tokusatsu' to use the Japanese categorical term.

Stars: Luke Goss, Donald Sutherland, Alec Newman, Julie Delpy, William Hurt | Written by Mark Kruger | Directed by Kevin Connor
What happens when man violates the laws of God and science? For Captain Walton (Sutherland) and the crew of a weather-beaten ship stranded in the icy sea, the answer follows their rescue of a scientist close to death, frozen in fear, and insane with dire warnings. Victor Frankenstein (Newman) has a story to tell—a story as chillingly real as the tortured howls emanating from the Arctic fog and as timeless as the need to be loved.
Made for the Hallmark Channel back in 2004, this version of Frankenstein comes from director Kevin Connor who brought the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, At the Earth’s Core and The Land that Time Forgot, to the big screen in the 70s and is once again based on the classic Mary Shelley tale, only...

Olivier Assayas looks back at the days following the events of May 1968 – and at his own youth – with a delicate wit
Link to video: Something in the Air: watch trailer here
The son of a movie director and now in his 50s, Olivier Assayas has built up an interestingly varied body of work as a critic for Cahiers du cinéma, authored several books including a monograph on Ingmar Bergman, and directed over the past 20 years a succession of modest, intelligent films. Most are concerned with moral problems and social responsibility in a middle-class setting like his Les Destinées sentimentales about a rebellious young man reluctantly taking over the family's prestigious porcelain factory in the 1920s, and Summer Hours, the tale of siblings and their elderly mother gathering to settle the estate of a recently deceased painter. Slightly different are Irma Vep, a cinéaste's celebration of Hong Kong movies and...

Dr Dave Hone talks the good, the bad and the ugly of dinosaurs on the silver screen and pays tribute to Ray Harryhausen
With the "furore" of the next Jurassic Park film and the vexed question of whether or not some of the non-avian starts should be bedecked with feathers, I had planned on penning a piece about dinosaurs on film. With the sad passing of Ray Harryhausen recently, that more than doubles my motivation, given the superb work he did and the inspiration I know that he was to a number of palaeontologists.
I have more than a passing interest in animation techniques, special effects and the like, and celebrate Harryhausen's work as much for the actual achievement of the effects on the screen as the actual thrill from watching his movies. I recall reading an interview with him where he claimed not to have been overly interested in...

While we’e been covering many of the Scream Factory releases for our Us readers, Arrow Video has been releasing horror classics in the UK for a while now and they recently announced their next set of Blu-ray releases. Take a look at release details, cover art, and bonus features for The Fall of the House of Usher, Lifeforce, Deranged, and Squirm. We’ve also included details for Motel Hell, which we covered earlier this week.

Though the digital dinosaurs were a significant part of the appeal of the original Jurassic Park as that level of realism had never before been reached in cinema, many of the shots to feature dinosaurs were actually full-scale practical robotic creations, conceived and produced at Stan Winston Studio.
Two key artists at Stan Winston’s side from the early 1980s until his death in 2008 are Shane Mahan and John Rosengrant. Now, the pair of craftspeople is together in a new company called Legacy Effects, but 20 years ago, they were ready to release their most ambitious film to that point – Jurassic Park.
The team at Stan Winston Studio spent a year building all of the practical dinosaurs which would shoot live on the set of the film, directed by Steven Spielberg and photographed by Dean Cundey. After production wrapped, Industrial Light and Magic matched their computer-generated dinosaurs to Sws’ designs and...

As The Croods arrives in UK cinemas, James recommends leaving civilised society behind and reveling in the freedom of being a Neanderthal...
Remember the advert where a caveman wakes up in a modern suburban setting and only becomes a fully upstanding civilised human being once he’s eaten a bowl of Corn Flakes with milk? Watching those commercials makes me never want to eat breakfast cereal ever again. Quite frankly, Kellogg’s, I’d rather be a caveman.
I’m not talking about a caveman in the Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble vein either. They aren’t cavemen. They are identifiable contemporary types drawn into a retrofitted animated version of 1960s mainstream America. As the theme tune cheerily proclaims, The Flintstones are “the modern stone age family” and the emphasis is definitely on the ‘modern family’ part.
What I’m talking about is real, authentic prehistoric man.

When an Antarctic expedition comes upon a series of undiscovered islands, the scientists on board must investigate. On these islands, they find plant and animal life unlike anything anywhere else on earth. Many of these species are large, possibly straight out of a pre-human era, and in order to record and photograph as many of these creatures as possible, the group splits up. Giant, Pteranodon-like beasts nest high above and immense beetles scurry in the thick foliage, as the scientists struggle to collect as much data as they can before nightfall. But when night comes, half the group doesn’t return to the ship. And the subsequent search-and-rescue becomes an all-out battle for survival.

StudioCanal have recently released a couple of Amicus Production classics by veteran film director Kevin Connor. The set on offer includes a few of his early classics ranging from the lesser known At The Earth’s Core and Warlords of Atlantis to the cult classic The Land that Time Forgot.
Now available on DVD I somehow found myself in the privileged position of interviewing the 70-something while apparently on his lunch break from filming. He’s obviously still going strong.
It’s my understanding that Milton Subotsky gave you your break in directing because he thought that editors make good directors. How exactly did that come about?
In the early 70’s I optioned a dozen short stories from Chetwynd Hayes entitled ‘The Unbidden’ thinking to make a TV series out of them. Myself and two friends adapted them into half hour films and unsuccessfully shopped them around the TV world.

★★★☆☆ StudioCanal have just released four monster titles from Amicus Studios, the only company which even came close to beating Hammer at their own game during the 1960 and 70s. Warlords of Atlantis (1978), They Came from Beyond Space (1967), At the Earth's Core (1976) and The Land That Time Forgot (1975), directed by Kevin Connor, Freddie Francis and starring Doug McClure, Peter Cushing, Caroline Monroe and Susan Penhaligon, are all examples of some of the studio's better-known epics.

At The Earths Core
Stars: Doug McClure, Peter Cushing, Caroline Munro, Cy Grant, Godfrey James, Keith Barron, Helen Gill | Written by Milton Subotsky | Directed by Kevin Connor
I’ve been through quite a marathon of Doug McClure Amicus movies as of late and by now you would think I should be getting slightly tired of them, this may be true but also it’s quite an enjoyable experience. At the Earth’s Core may not be the best of the selection but it’s one of the most welcoming, and it’s all for one man, that man being Peter Cushing.
Doug McClure is back as David Innes accompanying Dr. Abner Perry (Peter Cushing) in a test trip of their drilling machine known as the Iron Mole. Testing it in the Welsh mountains it’s not long before they find themselves at the centre of the earth where prehistoric bird...

Barbarella
Blu-ray, Paramount
On its release in 1968, this science fiction cult classic was dismissed by critics as overly campy, gaudy, silly and nonsensical. It's hard to argue with any of those points but they were wrong to see them as negatives; Barbarella thrives on such qualities.
Director Roger Vadim put his then-wife Jane Fonda centre stage in this wonderfully garish fantasy, a movie that has endured and found its audience. Why has it stuck around? Many people underestimate just how unusual Barbarella is. It's got far too much oddball fun to be dismissed so easily, but you can see why the squares didn't dig it. The story – space girl Barbarella is sent to a far-flung planet to find missing scientist Durand Durand – is just a peg on which to hang picaresque adventures and unusual characters, such as a blind angel, an evil queen, and children with killer dolls. The dialogue...

The Land That Time Forgot
Stars: Doug McClure, John McEnery, Susan Penhaligon, Keith Barron, Anthony Ainley | Written by James Cawthorn, Michael Moorcock | Directed by Kevin Connor
Amicus Productions, the “other” Hammer Horror film company – this is what it could be known as anyway, as a lot of their output was confused between the two. The Doctor Who films with Peter Cushing for example were Amicus, where quite a few fans actually think they were done by Hammer. This is one of the reasons that Amicus have quite the cult following, because they were Hammer, just (arguably) not as good. (I know, that comment could cause quite a debate).
The Land That Time Forgot is an example where cost was down, but actually they managed quite a good tale. Doug McClure, an often used Amicus action hero, plays Bowen Tyler – a sailor who along with other crew men (mostly British, where...

For this week’s Must Read, I don’t know if this is a one-off or a series, but I hope it’s a continuing series. Everyone is familiar, whether they know it or not, with the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs, thanks to the popularity throughout the 20th century of Tarzan in film and TV. Burroughs was a highly prolific pulp author until his death in 1950, with many other series and stand-alone works. You may also be familiar with another popular film adaptation of his work, The Land That Time Forgot.

Most of his books are still in print today (there are 539 Burroughs titles available from the Kindle store alone). 62 years after his death, Burroughs continues to be one of the genre's most venerated old-school pulp adventure writers.

It features Dwayne Johnson flexing his pecs and riding around on a giant bee. Could Journey 2 prove to be next year’s most enjoyable family film?
By now, you may well have seen the trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
Ostensibly a sequel to Journey To The Center Of The Earth, which proved a surprise hit back in 2008, it appears to have few ties to that film. Not that any of this matters – when a trailer opens with Luis Guzmán opening a helicopter full of chickens while Vanessa Hudgens...
