Phyllis Dalton, the revered British costume designer who created Peter O’Toole‘s iconic white desert robe for David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia and won Oscars 24 years apart for her work on Lean’s Doctor Zhivago and Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V, has died. She was 99.

Dalton died Thursday, The Telegraph reported. No other details were immediately available.

During her storied 50-year-plus career, Dalton also received an Oscar and BAFTA nomination for Carol Reed’s Victorian-era best picture winner Oliver! (1968); won a BAFTA for The Hireling (1973), set in post-World War 1; and landed an Emmy for Clive Donner’s 1982 telefilm The Scarlet Pimpernel, which takes place amid the French Revolution.

She started out as a wardrobe assistant on Laurence Olivier’s Henry V (1944) and got her first costume designer credit dressing Richard Todd and Glynis Johns on Rob Roy: The Highland Rogue (1953). She even aided the legendary Edith Head on Alfred Hitchcock...

Hallmark is known for having a pretty reliable stable of artists. Once an actor has starred in one of the many Hallmark Christmas movies out there, chances are, you'll start to see them over and over again. In fact, there are a small class of actors who can eke out a reliable living solely through their appearances in holiday films. Especially for a channel like Hallmark, which goes into sicko mode every fall, churning out dozens of Christmas movies to round out their calendar for the last few months of the year. 

Aside from familiar faces, sometimes Hallmark manages to score an actor who is more well-known for their career outside of the holiday film ouevre. David Tristan Birkin portrayed a young Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in Star Trek: The Next Generation two years after he had played Picard's nephew, Ren. Birkin has been acting since 1989, but he currently works as an artist and writer, as well as a Senior Lecturer in Photography at London College of Communication. Much of Birkin's photography centers on war, and his work has been exhibited around the world. He also co-founded Visible Justice, a research hub at the University of the Arts London that celebrates the combination of art with social justice.

In one of his first acting jobs, David Birkin portrayed Ren Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 2, "Family," which sees Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) visit his brother on Earth. A couple of years later, Birkin popped up in Tng season 6, episode 7, "Rascals," as Captain Picard himself, after a transporter accident transformed him into a child.

David Korda, a prominent member of the Korda family movie dynasty who served as a producer and important film financier in a show business career that spanned more than 60 years, has died. He was 87.

Korda, chairman of the British company Film Finances Ltd., died Sept. 18 at Cromwell Hospital in London, author, editor and film historian Charles Drazin told The Hollywood Reporter. He had been in poor health after a battle with cancer.

Korda’s parents were Zoltan Korda, director of the Ralph Richardson-starring epic The Four Feathers (1939), and actress Joan Gardner (Dark Journey, The Scarlet Pimpernel).

One of his uncles was Alexander Korda, the founder of London Films, the owner of British Lion Films, a producer of such classics as The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933) and The Third Man (1949) and the first filmmaker to receive a knighthood. Another uncle, Vincent Korda, was a painter and Oscar-winning art director.

Acorn TV has announced the titles that will be available on the AMC-owned streaming service in October 2024. The Acorn TV October 2024 slate adds to the service’s various acclaimed English and foreign-language dramas, engaging comedies, documentaries, and more.

Fans have always expressed how much they have admired Kevin Conroy’s work as Bruce Wayne and Batman on screen. The actor unfortunately passed away in November 2022 at the age of 66, following a private battle with intestinal cancer. Mark Shelmerdine, the veteran producer who revived London Films as an indie powerhouse and played a pivotal role in the development of the international TV distribution market, died October 26 in Santa Barbara surrounded by his family. He was 78.

Among his achievements, he was among the first UK indie TV producers to retain rights to a broadcast production and was a founder of the LA branch of BAFTA.

Shelmerdine’s death was confirmed to Deadline by his friend Brian Eastman. The producer had survived a rare and potentially deadly form of bile duct cancer by receiving a life-saving liver transplant in 2018 through a trial in Houston, and was one of the longest living survivors of the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Houston Methodist Hospital program.

Mark Shelmerdine, the Emmy-nominated producer who remade Alexander Korda’s dormant London Films label into an independent production powerhouse behind projects including I, Claudius, has died. He was 78.

Shelmerdine died Oct. 26 in Santa Barbara after a long illness, friend and fellow producer Brian Eastman told The Hollywood Reporter. After being diagnosed with a rare form of bile duct cancer in 2016, he had a life-saving liver transplant in 2018.

In the 1980s, Shelmerdine co-founded the Los Angeles branch of BAFTA and the Association of Independent Television Producers, which helped shape the sector that now dominates British TV production. He also published self-help books written by his late wife, Susan Jeffers.

The first of three children, Shelmerdine was born on March 27, 1945, in Buckinghamshire, England. His father, Dick, worked as a police office in Singapore and the Bahamas and as a postmaster in Gloucestershire, England.

Shelmerdine started out as an accountant at Coopers & Lybrand and Taylor Clark Ltd.

Tony winners Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster will take over as the stars of Broadway’s hit revival Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street for a limited engagement beginning in February, producer Jeffrey Seller confirmed today.

As previously announced, Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will play their final performances as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Tveit and Foster will begin performances on Friday, February 9, 2024, for 12 weeks only. Their final performance will be Sunday May 5.

A post-James Bond Daniel Craig and Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga currently are shaking things up on Broadway in the latest revival of “Macbeth,” Shakespeare’s tragedy of mayhem, power, murder and madness. The “Scottish play” has a reputation for being cursed because the Bard used real witches’ spells.

Peter H. Hunt, who won a Tony Award for his direction in 1969 of the now-classic musical 1776, helmed the 1972 film version and numerous episodes of CBS’ Touched By An Angel, died Sunday at home in Los Angeles from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was 81.

Hunt’s death was reported by his wife, Barbette Hunt, to the Los Angeles Times. HIs death was confirmed by the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where Hunt was the former artistic director. He was the uncle of actress Helen Hunt.

Bob Cobert, the Grammy- and Emmy-nominated composer of television’s “Dark Shadows” and “The Winds of War,” died of pneumonia Feb. 19, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 95.

Cobert’s themes for the 1960s Gothic horror soap “Dark Shadows” – “great spook music,” he once called it – were his most popular compositions, and “Quentin’s Theme” (for the character played by David Selby) became a top 10 hit in 1969 as recorded by the Charles Randolph Grean Sound, earning a Grammy nomination as Best Instrumental Theme.

The “Dark Shadows” score, the first daytime soap to generate a best-selling soundtrack album, cemented Cobert’s partnership with the series’ creator-producer Dan Curtis, who continued to employ Cobert on nearly all of his television and film projects for the next four decades.

When “The Dark Knight” failed to secured a best picture Oscar nomination, the snub was said to have prompted the Academy to expand the category from five nominees to as many as 10.

National Comics (now DC Comics) was enjoying comic sales due to Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's latest creation, Superman, and they were in the market for another caped crusader. Created by Bob Kane, he was little more than crude sketches until Bill Finger gave some suggestions that would make him iconic: The bat cowl, the color of the costume (Kane originally planned on having Batman wear a red union suit with black trunks and cape), and putting gloves on the hero.

Terrence Mann, currently starring in Pippin, will perform at a benefit for the children of Ms 54 - The Booker T. Washington School on Monday, May 19th, at 630pm in the school's auditorium. Comedian Judy Gold will host the event, with music direction by Joe Bachana. Brigid Brady The Phantom of the Opera, Paula Leggett Chase Bye Bye Birdie, Lauri Landry The Scarlet Pimpernel and George Merrick South Pacific are scheduled to appear. In addition, Ms 54 parent-performers are to include Marc Bernstein, Nathan Carver, Rob Derke, L. J. Ganser, Lisa Tamagini, Maren Waxenberg and Sarah Worthington. Ms 54 is a public middle school on West 108th Street, which serves some 825 children.
