Hallmark is known for having a pretty reliable stable of artists. Once an actor has starred in one of the many Hallmark Christmas movies out there, chances are, you'll start to see them over and over again. In fact, there are a small class of actors who can eke out a reliable living solely through their appearances in holiday films. Especially for a channel like Hallmark, which goes into sicko mode every fall, churning out dozens of Christmas movies to round out their calendar for the last few months of the year.
Aside from familiar faces, sometimes Hallmark manages to score an actor who is more well-known for their career outside of the holiday film ouevre. Often, they make little pit stops between other projects -- sometimes they're content with a one-off appearance, other times they're assimilated into the Hallmark family, taking on more holiday films afterwards.

With an all-star cast that includes the likes of Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman, Ernie Hudson, and Jackie Earle Haley, The Retirement Plan sees an estranged family come together in the Cayman Islands in order to keep a classified hard drive away from ruthless criminals. The result is a crime thriller that mixes together action, comedy, and drama into one fun and surprisingly symbolic cinematic ride. Canadian based film distributor turned writer-director Tim Brown (Buckley's Chance) put together the new movie, and MovieWeb recently sat down with the filmmaker to find out what it’s like working with the illustrious Cage, the origins behind Brown's own unique career trajectory, and the conditions that come with working in such an exotic location during lockdown.

The term "alter ego" is a Latin phrase that translates to the beautiful oxymoron of "alternate self." In ancient literature, alternate selves were typically presented as dark omens; doppelgängers and the like. The idea of hiding one's identity and surreptitiously committing acts of heroism perhaps originated in pop literature with the publication of Baroness Orczy's "The Scarlet Pimpernel" in 1905, and was further codified by the publication of Johnston McCulley's "The Curse of Capistrano," the 1919 pulp novel starring Zorro.
I bring up these literary antecedents as the model on which all modern superheroes have been explicitly based. The distance between the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Scarlet Spider is not so great. The appeal of an alter ego, or a secret identity, should be self-evident. Not only does it allow a superhero character to appear as a free agent, outside of the law and free from being identified, but it...

A post-James Bond Daniel Craig and Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga currently are shaking things up on Broadway in the latest revival of “Macbeth,” Shakespeare’s tragedy of mayhem, power, murder and madness. The “Scottish play” has a reputation for being cursed because the Bard used real witches’ spells.
It certainly has fallen afoul of the Tony Awards over the years. Negga was nominated but Craig was snubbed. Of the 11 previous stagings of “Macbeth” since the start of the Tony Awards, only the 2008 revival merited nominations for both stars (Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwood). Glenda Jackson reaped a bid in 1988 while Christopher Plummer was left in the wings.
The first recorded production of the play in New York was way back in 1768 at the John Street Theatre, which had been built the year before. Though the closing date is unknown, the theater was demolished in 1897. Lewis Hallam, who is the only known cast member,...

Bob Cobert, the Grammy- and Emmy-nominated composer of television’s “Dark Shadows” and “The Winds of War,” died of pneumonia Feb. 19, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 95.
Cobert’s themes for the 1960s Gothic horror soap “Dark Shadows” – “great spook music,” he once called it – were his most popular compositions, and “Quentin’s Theme” (for the character played by David Selby) became a top 10 hit in 1969 as recorded by the Charles Randolph Grean Sound, earning a Grammy nomination as Best Instrumental Theme.
The “Dark Shadows” score, the first daytime soap to generate a best-selling soundtrack album, cemented Cobert’s partnership with the series’ creator-producer Dan Curtis, who continued to employ Cobert on nearly all of his television and film projects for the next four decades.
They did four features and more than two dozen television films together. Their largest-scale project was “The Winds of War,” the 18-hour 1983 miniseries based on...

When “The Dark Knight” failed to secured a best picture Oscar nomination, the snub was said to have prompted the Academy to expand the category from five nominees to as many as 10.
A decade later, maybe out of fear that something similar might happen again to the immensely popular “Black Panther,” the Academy announced — then withdrew — its intention to create an award for most popular film. The idea was derided as a bald attempt to shore up sinking ratings for the Oscar telecast, as opposed to honoring the quality of the filmmaking.
“Black Panther” earned its spot in the best-picture category anyway, the first comicbook movie to do so. The film embedded itself in the culture so deeply and so quickly that “Wakanda forever” has been used as a knowing comic punchline everywhere from “Saturday Night Live” to the new film, “What Men Want.”

Raymond Massey ca. 1940. Raymond Massey movies: From Lincoln to Boris Karloff Though hardly remembered today, the Toronto-born Raymond Massey was a top supporting player – and sometime lead – in both British and American movies from the early '30s all the way to the early '60s. During that period, Massey was featured in nearly 50 films. Turner Classic Movies generally selects the same old MGM / Rko / Warner Bros. stars for its annual “Summer Under the Stars” series. For that reason, it's great to see someone like Raymond Massey – who was with Warners in the '40s – be the focus of a whole day: Sat., Aug. 8, '15. (See TCM's Raymond Massey movie schedule further below.) Howard was the star of classic films such as Gone with the Wind, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Pygmalion
The death of Leslie Howard in the air liner travelling from Lisbon must now be presumed. The actor was 50 this year, and began life as a bank clerk. After some war service he appeared on the stage in 1917, and first acted in London the following year in “The Freaks,” one of Pinero’s last plays. He was then seen but not particularly noticed in some of the highly successful light comedies of the post-war years. In 1920 he went to New York, where he soon became a fashionable actor on Broadway, appearing principally in English plays by Milne or Lonsdale. He stayed for the most part in New York until 1928, when he returned to London with a high American reputation and made a big success along with Miss Tallulah Bankhead in “Her Cardboard Lover.

Though it’s packed with unnerving moments from start to finish, viewers of The Shining may remember the ghost of Delbert Grady telling Jack Torrance that he must “correct” his wife and child as a particularly creepy scene, and next year fans of the film can see Delbert’s suggestion mixed with dancing and humor onstage in a musical theater parody of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic.
If you enjoyed Stephen King’s 1977 novel, The Shining, have watched Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation of the same name multiple times, or enjoyed watching horror and humor melded in a live show like Evil Dead The Musical, then you may want to check out the upcoming Redrum: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Shining. Set to hit the stage sometime next fall, the musical parody made an onstage sneak peek performance on Wednesday night.

"The "Bat-Man", a mysterious and adventurous figure, fighting for righteousness and apprehending the wrong doer, in his lone battle against the evil forces of society... His identity remains unknown."
Those exciting words started off a story in Detective Comics Issue number 27 in May of 1939, and the world was introduced to one of the most well-known and most recognized superheroes - The Bat-Man, as he was first called. National Comics (now DC Comics) was enjoying comic sales due to Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's latest creation, Superman, and they were in the market for another caped crusader. Created by Bob Kane, he was little more than crude sketches until Bill Finger gave some suggestions that would make him iconic: The bat cowl, the color of the costume (Kane originally planned on having Batman wear a red union suit with black trunks and cape), and putting gloves on the hero.
