From Breaking Bad to The Mandalorian and now The Electric State, Giancarlo Esposito’s characters are as strong-willed as it gets. As we discover over a no-holds-barred conversation, this is no accident – and no coincidence…
“My intention is to sit here and tell you all of who I am.”
It’s not a sentiment one often hears expressed in an interview. It’s an even rarer thing for it to be meant, and felt. But that’s exactly the brand of direct, open honesty you get when you talk to Giancarlo Esposito. It’s part of his nature.
Esposito has long been that knowingly reliable character actor who would always improve a project by a factor of approximately 27 per cent every minute he’s onscreen. Roles in iconic films like Do The Right Thing, The Usual Suspects and Malcolm X were early indicators of his limitless talent. But it was...

You might know him best for his 10-year portrayal as Aquaman, Protector of the Deep. Future moviegoers might remember him more as Lobo, The Ultimate Bastich. Whether Jason Momoa is a member of The Justice League or an intergalactic bounty hunter, the Hawaii-based actor had very different breaks on the small screen. Rather than cementing himself in the superhero world, Momoa first found himself in the soap opera scene. When the longstanding NBC series Baywatch was renamed Baywatch: Hawaii in its last two seasons, the then 19-year-old actor made his small-screen debut as one of the mainstay lifeguards.
But as interesting as that beach drama could be (after 10 years on television), what’s more eye-opening is that Momoa tried for that same type of slow-burning and scintillating soap opera once more after Baywatch: Hawaii was canceled in 2001. But this time, he found himself on Fox. Just two months after he...

Whether showcasing historically accurate sumo or exaggerated hulking Mma monsters, the best martial arts anime connect combat styles steeped in tradition with ground-breaking visuals. Series like Tomorrow's Joe's emotional boxing bouts and Dragon Ball's surprisingly grounded kung-fu inspiration laid the groundwork for modern hits like Baki and Wind Breaker, but there's no shortage of fighting brilliance in between.
The common thread among the best martial arts anime is a focus that goes beyond the fight, immersing viewers in the minds and motivations of the fighters. Of course, they are the beneficiaries of stellar animation, too—even the oldies innovating in their way. With their excellent execution and stories simmering below the surface-level conflicts, martial arts encounters become more than physical confrontation.

‘Gangs charged us $200 a night to shoot on their turf’: Walter Hill on making cult film The Warriors
‘It was on its way to becoming a smash hit. Then gangs in various parts of the country clashed outside cinemas – and they began pulling the film’
I thought Sol Yurik’s 1965 novel, The Warriors, would work well as a film but I told Larry Gordon [the producer]: “Nobody will ever let us make it. We’d have to shoot at night in New York, and it doesn’t lend itself to star casting.” I turned it down and went to do a western but the finance fell apart. Larry came back and asked if I was still interested.

One of Blade star Wesley Snipes’ most underrated movies is now free to stream. The actor and martial artist, who is best recognized for his role as the Marvel vampire hunter, a role he reprized in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, puts in a reliably charismatic performance as a boxer behind bars in the action/boxing/prison drama, Undisputed. You can now discover the movie without spending a dime, and it deserves a second round.
Released back in 2002, Undisputed is written, produced and directed by Walter Hill, the filmmaker behind the likes of the nightmarish ‘70s thriller The Warriors and producer of the Alien franchise. The movie stars Ving Rhames as George "The Iceman" Chambers and Wesley Snipes as Monroe "Undisputed" Hutchen, a pair of fighters who find themselves facing off while serving time behind bars. Quick LinksWhat is Southern Comfort About?Southern Comfort Is Directed by One of the All-Time GreatsHow Does Southern Comfort Relate to Clint Eastwood?
Clint Eastwood is one of the greatest movie directors of all time. This past year, he released what might be his final film, Juror No.2, and it didn't disappoint. Throughout his career, Eastwood has cemented himself as a filmmaker of habit. He gets into a rhythm and follows trends. For years, Eastwood was dedicated to the Western genre, releasing Unforgiven, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, and more. Soon after, he found himself in the business of dismantling bureaucracy with Changeling, Sully, and Richard Jewell. Somewhere in between these two trends, though, Eastwood found himself fascinated with war. The war genre is wide, varied, and controversial, ranging from grandiose battle films to propagandized nonsense to unflinchingly realistic depictions of violence, all the way to haunting portrayals of post-war blues.

“It’s been a wild ride,” Sean Baker said with a grin. It, in this case, is “Anora,” Baker’s uproarious and affecting dramedy about a Brooklyn sex worker, Ani (Mikey Madison), who impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn) and winds up battling Russian and Armenian henchmen and her spoiled man-child of a husband.
The $6 million production moved the director of gritty indie films like “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket” to a different level of recognition: He won the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and “Anora” received six Oscar nominations, including four that went to Baker: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
That total tied the record for the most nominations anyone has received for a single movie, which Baker shares with “Emilia Pérez” director-producer-writer-songwriter Jacques Audiard this year and with a small and...

When Sean Baker and Mikey Madison arrive at the Deadline shoot for this article, it’s a beautiful, clear blue-sky day in Los Angeles. Just for a moment, it’s almost as though the fires and smoke of the past few weeks are an imagined horror. Such is the indomitable spirit of L.A. The city, and the very nature of its artistic industry, has always been about resurgence and resilience. So, with the sun resolutely shining, it seems fitting to be celebrating Anora—a film that’s all about grit and the refusal to be beaten.
At no point in Anora does Madison’s central character surrender her personal power. As she works her job in a strip club and then spontaneously marries a rich, young Russian client, she remains self-possessed. Even when his oligarch family come for her, seeking to brutally eject her from their spoiled son’s life,...

The T-Birds. The Pink Ladies. The Warriors. The Teletubbies. Throughout history, film and television have homed an array of intimidating gangs, but perhaps the most recent to have caught the world's attention are the Peaky Blinders. Led by Cillian Murphy in Steven Knight's award-winning period drama (which broke the television production mold), the show is inspired by a real gang in the early 20th Century (although Knight approached the series like an old-school Western). The drama stars Murphy as Thomas Shelby, a devoted family man and feared head of the titular gang who, for six seasons and nine years, has dodged the law and the lawless in equal measure, dancing with death on more than one occasion along the way.
"Peaky Blinders" has already attracted talent like Sam Neill, Adrien Brody, and Tom Hardy over the course of its almost decade-long run, with Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan now set to...

When mentioning gangster movies, the first films that spring to mind are the likes of Goodfellas, The Godfather or Reservoir Dogs. The Warriors is a lesser-known example, but it has all the ingredients to compete with the greats. The release of the film some 46 years ago led to unprecedented violence that left theaters with a decision of whether they should reduce showings, or stop them entirely. The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Sol Yurick and follows a gang framed in the murder of a gang boss, trying to escape back to their turf in one night, avoiding rival gangs in the process.

“Dexter: Resurrection” is bringing three franchise veterans into the fold.
David Zayas, James Remar, and Jack Alcott have all been cast in series regular roles in the upcoming Paramount+ with Showtime drama. They will now appear alongside Michael C. Hall, who will reprise the role of Dexter Morgan.
Zayas will once again play Det. Angel Batista, while Remar will play Harry Morgan, the roles they played in the original “Dexter.” Alcott will play Harrison Morgan, Dexter’s son, who first appeared in the sequel series “Dexter: New Blood” in 2021.
Production on “Dexter: Resurrection” is set to begin in January with a planned debut in the summer. No specific plot details are available for “Resurrection,” but the series will serve as a direct followup to “New Blood.”
In addition to his role in “Dexter,” Remar is known for his work in shows like “Sex and the City” and “City on a Hill.

After the box-office success of musicals like Wicked and Moana 2, Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical collaboration with Eisa Davis on a remix of The Warriors should be the next Miranda film adaptation. 2024 has been a good time for movie musicals, with plenty of successes found on the big screen. Even beyond the historic heights of Wicked and Moana 2, films as diverse as Emilia Pérez, Spellbound, Mean Girls, Joker: Folie à Deux, The End, and Mufasa: The Lion King highlight how versatile and varied the genre has proven to be in modern film.
This leaves the door open for plenty of other big musical adaptations, with other upcoming movie musicals set to make their mark at the box office. However, one of the most exciting prospects that currently doesn't have a movie planned actually has an established cinematic history. Beware, reader! There are spoilers ahead for the "What We Do in the Shadows" series finale, bleh bleh bleh!
Much like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Fargo," and "M*A*S*H," it didn't take long for the "What We Do in the Shadows" TV series to justify its existence, step out of its movie counterpart's shadow, and turn into one of the best comedies on television. For six seasons, the show has followed the misadventures of a group of horny and buffoonish vampires who had long given up their mission to conquer the new world and simply lead static lives of hijinks, as well as the quest of their familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) to become a vampire despite discovering he has Van Helsing blood in him. Season 5 even had Guillermo finally turning into a creature of the night, only to realize that it was not for him and transform back into a human.

While he’s been making a strong impression in films from the likes of John Woo and Nicolas Winding Refn for the last three decades, 2024 marks a major year for Alessandro Nivola. Earlier this year saw the release of Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat and, this Friday, Nivola can be seen in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist and Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door.
In The Brutalist, Nivola gives a formidable performance as Attila, immigrant cousin to Adrien Brody’s László Tóth and his sole connection to America. The backbone of the epic film’s first act, Attila provides an entry point into assimilation and the sacrifices and consolations one must shed in pursuit of the American Dream.

JFK Tsa vampires. “What We Do in the Shadows” isn’t leaving any New York (or vampire) subculture behind in Season 6; this in turn has given costume designer Laura Montgomery the gift of delivering new twists for the FX series’ final run around Staten Island.
The biggest lift of the season was probably Episode 9, “Come Out and Play,” the show’s loving tribute to “The Warriors” and confirmation of the hidden, evil agenda of every Brooklyn barista/artist-and-writer vampire. Montgomery and her team needed to dress the episode’s huge background cast with enough distinctiveness that each group read quickly and comedically as part of the show’s quick-panning, constantly readjusting mockumentary style.
“The show is 22 minutes long and [the costumes are] purely a visual gag when you’re calling out all these vampires,” Montgomery told IndieWire. “Because we had to dress crew, [we had] Location Support On Camera vampires,...

One part The Office, one part Dracula, and several parts the 2014 What We Do In The Shadows movie from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, this charming FX sitcom has been chugging along for the past six years, reliably producing season after season of quality comedy with a horror twist. What We Do In The Shadows occasionally earned a viral moment or a spike in popularity, but mostly it sank or swam by doing what sitcoms always did: introducing a great cast of memorable characters, finding hilarious people to play them, and then making merciless fun of them episode after episode, year after year.
The only minor difference is that most of the characters here happen to be vampires: ancient lunkhead Nandor (Kayvan Novak), quick-to-anger Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), smooth-talking Lazslo (Matt Berry), the boring-on-purpose energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and Nandor's long-suffering familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), who is more competent...

It’s been 10 long years since we last saw Alexander Skarsgård’s Eric Northman in the seminal HBO hit True Blood, but if you happened to catch last night’s episode of What We Do in the Shadows, you’d have recognized a familiar face. Skarsgård made an appearance in the latest outing of the FX series, which has only two episodes to go now before it wraps up its sixth and final season.
Titled "Come Out and Play," the Season 6 episode is a riff on the Walter Hill cult-classic film The Warriors, and features Skarsgård as a reluctant onlooker in a crowd of NYC vampires being addressed by Doug Jones' character, The Baron. When he asks if anyone has a question, a vampire raises his hand, only to get his skull crushed by Cravensworth’s Monster. When The Baron notes that Skarsgård also had his hand raised, he timidly replies,...

Since the release of Matt Reeves' The Batman, many viewers have wondered if the story takes place within the same continuity as 2019's Joker film. Both DC films employ a strikingly similar direction, exposing Gotham's gritty criminal underbelly. So, could that have been Arthur Fleck locked up in Arkham Asylum next to Paul Dano's Riddler?
Despite sharing many similarities, Matt Reeves has already dismissed the notion that The Batman and Todd Phillips' Joker occur in the same universe. When looking at the differences between both films, the possibility of Robert Pattinson's brooding vigilante facing off against Joaquin Phoenix...

From Grease in a brawler to Kindergarten Cop in a classic survival horror, movies had a habit of unexpectedly popping up in 80s and 90s videogames.
There’s long been a link between movies and videogames. There were the earliest licenced games, such as Atari’s groundbreaking Star Wars cabinet or the same company’s slightly less successful E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial console tie-in.
Then there are games that take inspiration from the themes, production design or plot points of movies; Technos coin-op Renegade, when reworked for its western release, drew on the urban malaise of Walter Hill’s 1979 movie The Warriors, for example. Then there are all the games that have borrowed from the look of the Alien franchise, which are too numerous to mention.
Every so often, though, films used to make unexpected cameos in 1980s and 90s videogames. In some instances, their appearance was so brief,...

The first hour of “Anora” is designed to feel like a Cinderella story. Ani (Mikey Madison), a Brooklyn sex worker, gets swept up into the whirlwind lifestyle and absurd wealth of Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the 19-year-old son of a Russian oligarch who goes from her client to husband in the course of a week.
“I was trying to present the audience with a classic Hollywood romantic comedy, maybe a dirty romantic comedy, but a romantic comedy for the first 45 minutes to an hour,” said writer and director Sean Baker when he was guest on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “I knew that could be its own movie. David Harris made a name for himself with the role of Cochise in 1979s The Warriors (the more Native American-inspired member of the infamous gang). It could be said that the late but great actor had a thing for dramas, even if there was a little action injected in them at times too. With a big screen career that lasted for almost 40 years, the man ended up starring in all sorts of high-intensity features after the iconic gang movie, including a film about a newly hired warden trying to fix a very violent prison (1980s Brubaker) and becoming Officer Donny Simmons for 16 episodes of NYPD Blue that aired 15 years later.

The creator of Hamilton and the writer Eisa Davis explain why they turned the classic film into a Jesus Christ Superstar-style concept album, with the help of hip-hop royalty – from Ghostface Killah to Lauryn Hill
What is the most cherished movie from your early childhood? Probably not The Warriors, Walter Hill’s fierce thriller about New York gang battles. But as Lin-Manuel Miranda says with a grin: “Our friend’s older brother had the VHS …” Which is how four-year-old Miranda found himself watching the film that, 40 years later, the Hamilton composer has turned into a musical concept album with playwright Eisa Davis.

When Joker arrived in 2019, the world took notice. Batman’s chief nemesis has long wreaked cinematic havoc in various acclaimed guises, but Todd Phillips’ film presented a brilliantly bold new take on Gotham’s biggest villain. Along with Joaquin Phoenix, Phillips reimagined the origin of Joker as the story of Arthur Fleck – a lonely wannabe stand-up comic living in a festering Gotham City with the stench of ‘70s New York all over it, driven to dark deeds by a world that routinely denies him comfort or kindness. Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy, and 1970s character-driven psychological thrillers, Joker proved to be one of the most daring comic book movies ever made – one that conquered the Oscars, and the box office to boot.

To industry outsiders, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' recent decision to add a Best Casting category seemed an odd choice. Though the casting process isn't necessarily a mystery to most people, if they've ever experienced it firsthand it was probably auditioning for a school or local play. In these cases, they're auditioning for the director, maybe the writer, and possibly a producer. There is no casting person present.
Obviously, anyone who's ever watched a movie has surely become accustomed to seeing a casting credit during the opening credits, but how many people bother to Google the details of how casting on a feature film works? It's not just a question of fit. It can get awfully political if an agent attempts to force an up-and-coming actor into a production, and has the leverage to do so because they represent bigger names. A whole host of factors can come into play when,...

Lauryn Hill was announced Wednesday as one of the lead singers on Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis’s new concept album of The Warriors.
As for whether the concept album, which also features Busta Rhymes, Rza, Ghostface Killah, Colman Domingo and more alongside an all-female gang, will become the Hamilton creator’s next full-length stage show, Miranda said it will depend on the reception.
“The plan is just to release it and see how people respond,” Miranda said at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in Manhattan Wednesday. He added that the project did not have a director or producers yet attached.
The album, due to be released Oct. 18, musicalizes the 1979 film that follows a street gang making their way from the Bronx to their home in Coney Island and encountering other gangs en route.

Easily the most iconic line from The Warriors is the villain's menacing "Warriors, come out to play!" and the iconic taunt has a fascinating origin story. The Warriors was based on the novel of the same name and follows the titular gang, who attend a summit held by an influential gang leader named Cyrus. Said leader is gunned down while giving a speech, with the Warriors framed for the deed. They then have to travel from the Bronx to Coney Island while being pursued by just about every other gang in the city, who are seeking vengeance.
The movie's lean pace, great characters, and music saw it become a word-of-mouth smash, and it's now considered a cult favorite. The original movie is filled with famous quotes, but the most iconic line from The Warriors comes from the movie's villain, Luther. He taunts the Warriors with "Warriors,...

At first glance, Wolfs, the first non-Spider-Man film from director Jon Watts since 2015’s Cop Car, seems to be something of a Pulp Fiction/Quentin Tarantino riff. There’s that deliberately grammatically inaccurate title, which nods to Harvey Keitel’s character from that film, a well-dressed man who ‘solves problems’ when a dead body unhelpfully shows up. There’s a MacGuffin in a bag. There’s a junkie who gets a shot of adrenaline. There’s even a Pov shot from a car boot.
In fact, the director Watts is aping here is Shane Black. To its snowy, Christmas-set core, Wolfs is a Shane Black movie that Shane Black never got round to making. It doesn’t quite share his talent for witty dialogue or outlandish action, but it has the Black sensibility down, telling a story about — as one character puts it — “an absolutely fucking clusterfuck of a mess”. And it has,...

When “Boulevard Nights” opened in early 1979, it was one of several major studio films — along with “The Warriors,” The Wanderers,” and “Over the Edge” — to take on gang violence as its primary subject. After the movies inspired a handful of violent incidents at theaters, Paramount doubled down on the marketing of Walter Hill‘s “The Warriors” and turned it into a box office hit; unfortunately for “Boulevard Nights” director Michael Pressman, Warner Bros. went in the opposite direction and pulled their film from the venues where violence had broken out, essentially abandoning the movie.
“Warner Bros. said, ‘We’re very proud of this movie, don’t get us wrong,'” Pressman told IndieWire, “‘but we’re not about to risk lawsuits.'” Over the years, however, “Boulevard Nights” has found the audience it always deserved via repertory screenings (it’s a perennial favorite at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema...

John Cena was understandably put out when Warner Bros. honcho David Zaslav coldly shelved his live-action/animated comedy, “Coyote vs Acme” last year. But he may have found some comfort in Paul Feig’s “Jackpot!”, which is basically an extended “Road Runner” episode.
Though there aren’t any actual cartoon characters in “Jackpot!”, it’s more than fair to call it cartoonish — and most of the participants probably wouldn’t argue the point.
Interestingly, it’s Cena — and co-lead Awkwafina — who give the two-dimensional structure some three-dimensional heft. But they have to work pretty hard to bust out of its repetitive cycle of low-stakes comic violence. There are no anvils involved, but there might as well be.
Awkwafina is the hapless Katie, a former child actor who’s just returned to a slightly-futuristic LA in order to revive her career. She’s arrived in 2026, by which point the country is...
