If you’ve never heard of Lloyd Kaufman, you’ve managed to avoid the work of one of the most prolific pioneers of independent film from the past four decades. Kaufman’s New York-based movie studio Troma Entertainment has produced and distributed more than 1,000 films, and in the process has helped launch the careers of some of Hollywood’s most successful talents.
New Yorkers unfamiliar with Troma have a chance to catch up on its sensibilities this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, Troma hosts the 17th annual Tromadance Film Festival in Brooklyn, a free festival showing feature films and shorts from filmmakers around the world. This is the story of how one wacky filmmaking factory found its groove.

We celebrate the hideously deformed superhero of superhuman size and strength, New Jersey's own... The Toxic Avenger.
Assorted comic book facsimiles of New York City may be protected by the tireless vigilance of Superman, Spider-Man, or Batman, but it took Troma Entertainment to give New Jersey a long-overdue superhero all its own, and one it richly deserved. In the annals of radically independent and hilariously low-budget American filmmaking, few franchises have achieved either the longevity or the mythical status of Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz’s The Toxic Avenger, the film that cemented Troma’s style and aesthetic, and which introduced an icon who remains as intertwined with Troma’s identity as Godzilla is with Toho’s.
But let’s back up a few years.

For those who haven’t seen The Toxic Avenger, first of all why not? (stop reading this review and go pre-order the Blu-ray now), it is essentially the film that made Troma. Having picked up numerous films for distribution and being predominantly known for sex comedies such as Squeeze Play, Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman decided to lense their own horror film and thus The Toxic Avenger was born; in turn Troma became known for campy, over the top, “horror” movies and the rest, they say, is history.
The film tells the story of Melvin Junko, a health club janitor who is the butt of a cruel joke that goes horribly wrong after he is tricked...

On The Bachelor, we’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel all around this beautiful globe of ours. We’ve had some interesting long travel days before but this trip from Da Nang, Vietnam to Lake Taupo, New Zealand is one for the record books. We had a nice long buggy ride from the hotel in Da Nang. Then we hopped our first flight up to Ho Chi Minh City. After some pretty good noodles in the airport we jumped on a nice long overnight flight to Sydney, Australia. We all got off and enjoyed a little lunch before getting on a flight to Auckland,...

Peter Farrelly's new film ticks every gross-out box
"Prepare for a motion picture experience that's unforgivable!" warns the trailer for Movie 43. Out on Friday, in a week dominated by seriousface Oscar fare, it's a bold marketing gambit, and one that requires a certain amount of "bad meaning good" cognizance to fully appreciate, It's also a window into the irreverent sensibility of the genre to which Movie 43 so gleefully subscribes: gross-out.
Though its roots date back to cinema's earliest days (1), the gross-out genre blossomed in the wake of John Landis's 1978 comedy Animal House. Grossing (*snort*) more than 70 times its production cost, the film spawned a deluge of low-budget, -brow and -inhibition comedies, all eager to replicate its unlikely success. Some did (the Porky's franchise ran and ran) and some didn't (anyone remember Squeeze Play?) but together they revelled in pushing the boundaries of cinematic decency and audience stamina.

The world of indie filmmaking is forever colliding with the larger worlds of technology and giant media conglomerates, regulatory and legal developments, non-profit groups and a fickle consumer who loves indie film and other indie media.
Indie-Current is a monthly heads-up tracking these developments. It’s a big — and forever getting bigger – world out there, so readers are encouraged to e-mail me stories I’ve missed or something you believe is important for others in the indie community. Remembering 9/11
September 11, 2011, will commemorate the tenth anniversary of a day that changed America. Many docs will likely be shown in theatres and movie houses to commemorate the events surrounding the catastrophic occurrences.
Indie filmmaker Scott Rettberg has taken a different tack with his heartfelt feature doc, New York Says Thank You (pictured). It chronicles the foundation that brings New York firefighters and volunteers to California,...

Welcome back, dear readers! Sorry about the delay as this writer’s heading off to cover SXSW for the next couple of days. But so far we’ve had quite the journey as we’ve looked back at the first 15 films in our countdown of the 25 milestones that shaped the world of independent horror.
Today we start in 1983 and kick things off with a true shocker!
1983- Horror Audiences Take a Shocking Trip to Sleepaway Camp:
Right after he graduated film school, writer/director Robert Hiltzik set out to make an unusual horror movie based on the success of the slasher films that had been hitting multiplexes over the previous several years. Hiltzik decided he was ready to leave his impression on the horror genre and independently raised $350,000 for Sleepaway Camp, a slasher flick inspired by his own experiences at summer camp as a kid (in fact, he actually...

I love 'The Price is Right.' If I were to pick my 20 favorite TV shows of all-time, it would be on that list. But that doesn't mean it doesn't anger me. Actually, the contestants who play 'Price Is Right' anger me.
You'd think that anyone who attends a taping of the show would be familiar with its games, but you'd be amazed at the number of people who have never seen the one they're about to play or have seen it yet still completely screw it up. The contestants on 'Wheel of Fortune' often make me sad, but at least they seem to know how to play (even if you often wonder "why can't they guess this?" and "why are they still buying vowels?!").
What follows is a guide to winning seven popular games on 'The Price Is Right.' I didn't include games like Squeeze Play...

Wow, what does Darren Lynn Bousman's mom get for her special day? News that her son is remaking Charles Kaufman's Mother's Day, a 1980 exploitation horror flick from Troma that follows the hilarious misadventures of two brothers whose mom likes to watch them rape and murder women. Wait, did I say hilarious? Sorry, I meant icky and effed up. (But that doesn't mean I'm not going to Netflix it.) And no, it's not an existential and tripped-out treatise on love and mortality a la Charlie Kaufman. Charles Kaufman wrote and directed Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters, directed and produced Sextasy, and wrote Squeeze Play. He also has uncredited roles in Mother's Day as a cocaine addict and Squeeze Play as "Man with Popcorn in his Nose."Filed under: Horror, Deals, Distribution
