The trailer opens in a complex of storage units, where Laurie (Isabelle Fuhrman) is working the night shift when Jules (Johnson) drops in, demanding to see the contents of the titular Unit 234. It's common Hollywood practice for a comedic actor to break out of their comfort zone and take on the gauntlet of a dramatic performance. Over the years, many hilarious actors have demonstrated their proficiency in this endeavor. Legendary comedian Steve Carell is a prime example of someone who excels at shifting between genres — after leaving the hit NBC sitcom The Office, which is now getting a reboot, he went on to deliver several stellar dramatic performances.
The opposite is a far less likely scenario. For the most part, actors who built their careers upon dramatic roles stay in their lane. Unless they've had previous experience with the comedy genre, their presence is generally unexpected. However, when a serious movie star gives comedy a try, it's always hysterical, as the no-nonsense image that their prior roles have created is immediately and hilariously broken down.

Morgan Freeman once said, “The best way to guarantee a loss is to quit.” If anyone’s taken this advice to heart, it’s the actor himself. Over the decades, he has worked tirelessly, proving time and again that quitting isn’t in his vocabulary.

Morgan Freeman has played a variety of roles throughout his career, but hes mostly known for his mentor roles and one of his most hilarious roles ended up flipping this typecast in the best way. Morgan Freeman is one of the most popular and respected actors of his generation and with good reason, as he has shown his incredible acting range in a variety of movies in a career that spans six decades. Freemans acting debut was in the 1964 drama The Pawnbroker, but his big break arrived in 1987 in the crime thriller Street Smart.
Since then, Freeman has been part of a variety of movies in both main and secondary roles, and among his most notable projects are Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, and Christopher Nolans The Dark Knight trilogy. Unlike Superman and Superman II, Superman III didn’t even bother teasing the next installment in the franchise. Really, by the time that movie’s end credits hit, did anyone even want another entry? Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.
If you remember from our previous instalment of What Happened to This Movie?!, Superman III was plagued with all sorts of problems both on and off the screen. So what happened this time around? Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

Imagine being a high school student. You're at the crossroads of your teenage years, and every morning, you wake up early to catch the bus and get one step closer to getting your diploma. The school you attend is set up like many others across the country but with one notable difference. The halls are covered with graffiti. Drug dealing is conducted out in the open, and rampant violence is found everywhere. This was the situation at East Side High in Patterson, New Jersey until principal Joe Clark came in to make a difference.
The story of the crusade to turn around East Side High was brought to life in the 1989 film Lean on Me, in which Clark was portrayed by Morgan Freeman. A principal going to war with a high school that resembled a dystopian wasteland armed with a bullhorn, a baseball bat, and an impressive vocabulary might have seemed far-fetched.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace marked the downfall of a once iconic franchise, failing to capture the charm of its predecessors. Nuclear Man, the film's lackluster villain, embodied everything wrong with the movie, lacking depth and memorable qualities. Despite its poor reception, Nuclear Man made a brief appearance in DC Comics, meeting a swift demise in a fitting end.
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace brought Christopher Reeve's durable superhero franchise to an ignominious end, serving as a low point for comic book adaptations and movies. Poorly conceived and badly executed, it's remarkable not only for the shoddiness of a supposedly A-list endeavor but for the talent it wasted. With story credit, Reeve cared deeply about the Superman project's message and fought desperately to make it work, while stars Gene Hackman and Jon Cryer hit career low points before moving on to better things.

Its hard to overstate just how much of an icon Christopher Reeve was in the wake of the success of the initial Superman franchise. Outside of a few classic serials with George Reeves, audiences had no understanding of what a cinematic superhero story could look like. The notion of a comic book character coming to life seemed completely ridiculous, yet Reeve delivered sensitive, inspirational performances that effectively launched an entire genre. While the first two installments in the Superman series are considered to be among the greatest comic book movies ever made, Reeve sought other opportunities as the franchise began to decline in quality. The same year that Superman IV: The Quest for Peace destroyed both its franchise and the genre itself for the foreseeable future, Reeve starred with a young Morgan Freeman in the neo-noir crime thriller Street Smart.

Morgan Freeman once quoted the nautical saying “long foretold, long last; short notice, soon past” to describe his acting career. He meant that it took him along time to achieve success in the acting profession but he hoped his long struggle would mean his career would last and not prove to be just a flash in the pan. His career has lasted and Freeman has had a nearly 30-year film career in major movies.
Freeman’s career started on the New York stage in the musical theater when he took over the role of Rudy the Maître d’ of the restaurant where the famous title number is performed. He was part of the groundbreaking moment when Pearl Bailey led an all-black cast into the production which had been running for years with white performers.
In the 1970s Freeman appeared for seven years and 680 episodes of the children’s television series “The Electric Company.

Morgan Freeman's powerful performances in films like Glory showcase his ability to embody noble characters and command the screen with authority. Street Smart was the breakout role for Morgan Freeman, challenging him in a new way. Despite a poor box office performance, the film received critical acclaim and award nominations. Street Smart is worth watching for Freeman's standout performance and a well-written drama.

At 86, Morgan Freeman is still basking in the glory of a breathtaking career that has earned him an Academy Award and a long list of noteworthy flicks. As everyone knows, the Tennessee-born is a legendary actor who has enthralled audiences for decades with electrifying performances and, of course, his distinct voice.
Freeman has gained an indelible place in the hearts of fans with his roles in series such as The Long Way Home & The Electric Company and movies like The Shawshank Redemption. That being said, his seemingly ageless appearance may be even more impressive than his acclaimed roles. For this Oscar-winning actor, it feels almost like time has stopped.

That makes her, to the best of our knowledge, older than any of her peers.
Below are listed the 25 oldest. Since our most recent list, Norman Lear, Robert M. Young (both of who briefly were the oldest...

Many people often blasphemously (and hilariously) joke around that Morgan Freeman is God. Not only because of his pitch perfect casting as God but also due to his smooth, defining and, yes, god-like is Morgan Freeman’s voice that one can’t picture penguins or parts of nature or, yes, God, without hearing the man. One reason could be that we’ve only ever really known Morgan Freeman as an older actor, not striking a chord with mainstream audiences until he was in his 50s.
Soon enough his skills, screen presences and voice had Hollywood calling every time they needed a kind wise grandfather types or a grizzled vet from either side of the the law or any type of narration in any type of film. That persona has marked him as a welcome figure throughout modern cinema – despite the nearly constant cash grabs that pad out the unfortunate bulk of his filmography.

Long before the 2019 revival of "The Twilight Zone" dropped on CBS All Access, there was the 1985 revival of the same name. This version was also not quite as well-received as the original series, but it still delivered plenty for fans of the classic series to enjoy: Fun premises, spooky characters, ominous narration, and plenty of actors who'd go on to become extremely famous. Such was the case with a segment in season 1's eighth episode named "Dealer's Choice," which gives us a delightful performance from Morgan Freeman two years before his breakout role in "Street Smart."
The story centers around a group of guys playing poker, who quickly discover that the new guy at the table is actually the Devil himself, here to claim one of their souls. Going into the episode forty years later, you'd expect Freeman to be playing the Devil. He's proven by now that he's great at playing a somewhat aloof,...

Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story recounts and examines the incredibly compelling, tragic, redemptive story of actor and activist Christopher Reeve. He was made famous playing the superhero Superman in Richard Donner/Richard Lester/Sidney J. Furie’s quartet of films in the ’70s and ’80s. In 1995, Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from a horse during a competition. That terrible accident eventually sparked the creation of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a non-profit whose goal is to cure spinal-cord injury and improve the quality of life for those with paralysis.
It’s hard to write criticism of films like these. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is an important movie about an important subject, supported by those closest to him––in this case, Reeve’s grown-up children Matthew, Alexandra, and Will. Bonhôte and Ettedgui are accomplished documentarians (see their...

Exactly 20 years after he made history as the first Black performer to win a Golden Globe for a multi-part limited series, Jeffrey Wright is widely expected to triumph on his second general notice from the same organization. According to Gold Derby’s odds, he is the frontrunner in the 2024 Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor race based on his work in “American Fiction,” which is also set to compete for Best Comedy/Musical Film and Best Screenplay. If Wright at least prevails and thereby maintains his perfect Golden Globes record, he will become the third Black winner in his category’s seven-decade existence.
Adapted from the no-holds-barred 2001 novel “Erasure,” “American Fiction” was written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Cord Jefferson, who has collected numerous accolades (including a Primetime Emmy) for his script work on such TV programs as “Watchmen” and “Succession.” Wright leads a primarily Black cast as fictional author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison,...

Chicago – Michael Shannon is also a film director. The distinctive actor, who has wowed cinema fans with his performances over the years, showcased his directorial debut at the 59th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff) with “Eric Larue.” Shannon did a master class on directing, walked the Red Carpet and appeared at the film screening.
Janice Larue is (Judy Greer) a middle-aged mother coming to terms with a shooting spree perpetrated by her son. Adapted from Brett Neveu’s 2002 play — which debuted at A Red Orchid Theatre in Chicago — the film follows the shell-shocked Janice as she attempts to navigate the tragedy in her small town. While a local pastor tries to reconcile Janice with the victims’ mothers, Janice’s feeble husband (Alexander Skarsgård) finds refuge in an upstart church led by a motivational preacher (Tracy Letts). But Janice must find her own way. The film was a Special Presentation of the 59th Ciff.

Witnessing an actor adeptly shift between comedy and drama genres is a true audience delight, especially when that actor is closely associated with one particular style. Navigating the comedy domain can be challenging for dramatic actors due to its intricate demands on timing. Comedic performers must comprehend the humor of a situation, while deliberately playing against it, to present a genuine portrayal and nail the joke. While live stage performances benefit from immediate audience reactions, on-screen actors encounter a tougher challenge, lacking the energy from the audience.
The iconic actor and comedian, Carol Burnett, once said "Comedy is tragedy plus time," which highlights how humor finds its origins in hardships (and makes it easier for comedic actors to embrace dramatic roles). Sony action-comedy Twisted Metal, which is based on the classic PlayStation series, has been picked up in Canada by Paramount+. More markets are to come, according to the streamer, which will launch the Anthony Mackie-starrer on August 10. Executive produced by Will Arnett, Twisted Metal follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named Sweet Tooth who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck. This story about Michael Shannon and his two recent projects, “George & Tammy” and “Waco: The Aftermath” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A tweet recently circulated asking, “Who is an actor who may not be the main character, but always makes any movie better?” The answer for many was Michael Shannon, whose tense, often explosive performances frequently inspire listicles ranking his roles by their degree of creepy terror, such as the gentle paranoia of Curtis Laforche in “Take Shelter” and the repressive fanaticism of Nelson Van Alden in “Boardwalk Empire.”
Now the 48-year-old actor has moved center stage with standout lead performances in two Showtime limited series: “George & Tammy,” in which he plays the outsize country rabble-rouser George Jones with masterful vulnerability (opposite Jessica Chastain) and “Waco: The Aftermath,” capturing the slow-burn inner turmoil of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

Morgan Freeman has explained why he views the term African-American as “an insult” and aired out his issues with Black History Month in a rare interview with The Sunday Times.
“Two things I can say publicly that I do not like,” Freeman said. “Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month? Also ‘African-American’ is an insult. I don’t subscribe to that title.”
He continued, “Black people have had different titles all the way back to the N-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American.’ What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”

Amazon Prime Video has popped off with plenty of new content for March 2023 with original shows and some great catches for films to stream. “Top Gun: Maverick” will arrive March 24, and Jordan Peele’s “Nope” before that on March 21. For those anticipating “Creed III,” the first two films starring and directed by Michael B. Jordan will become available at the beginning of March along with all of the “Rocky” films as well as “Cinderella Man” for the broader boxing buff community. A theatrical release from 2022, “The Silent Twins,” starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence arrives March 7.
Friday March 3 will see “Daisy Jones & The Six” rock the world when the band’s epic limited series comes out. Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, and more will bring Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling novel to life. Other shows to look forward to on the streamer are Donald Glover’s horror series...

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

When I majored in journalism at Western Michigan University, my professors routinely showed movies in the classroom to complement their lesson plans. In my investigative journalism course, for example, one professor had us watch the 2015 biographical film "Spotlight," which is based on The Boston Globe's uncovering of a child sex abuse scandal committed by local Roman Catholic priests. When it came to lessons on the career-killers plagiarism and fabrication of sources, another professor showed the 2003 biographical drama "Shattered Glass," which recounts disgraced journalist Stephen Glass' professional demise after he fabricates stories for "The New Republic" magazine. The movie was a box office bomb, but if you have any interest in journalism or are a Hayden Christensen fan — he stars as Glass — I urge you to give it a watch.
Some years later, I came across another movie that tackles fabrication in journalism: 1987's "Street Smart," starring Christopher Reeve. Initially,...

Like as if they were digging for that gem in a vinyl shop, Deadline reports that Dekanalog have lassoed three sturdy titles from film festival editions past. They nabbed the sophomore feature by Agnieszka Smoczynska in Fugue — the 2018 pick (which we’ve got to say remains her best work to date after having reviewed The Silent Twins just two weeks back) was a highlight at the Critics Week section that year. And speaking of Cannes, they grabbed the 2021 Un Certain Regard preemed Streetwise (Gaey Wa’r) by Jiazuo Na. Finally, they grabbed a solid directorial debut by Emre Kayiş in Anatolian Leopard – a TIFF selection for last year’s edition.…...

Exclusive: Dekanalog has picked up Streetwise, Anatolian Leopard and Fugue, three buzzy international films.
The outfit, which launched in 2020 to focus on shopping international films to U.S. audiences, has taken global rights to the trio and plans to launch them within the calendar year.
Cannes favourite Streetwise is a Chinese film from Jiazuo Na and follows Dongzi, a small-town debt collector trying to pay off his sick father’s hospital bill.
Anatolian Leopard charts the relationship between a lonely manager and neglected female officer who form an unlikely bond at Turkey’s oldest zoo, involving themselves in an absurd charade that spins out of control, while Agnieszka Smoczynska’s Fugue tells of a mother who suffers memory loss and returns to her family looking familiar but behaving like a stranger.

In 2023, Capcom will finally release Street Fighter 6. When the game was announced a few months back, all we knew about the sequel at that time was that it was going to feature a new character named Luke and a very wide, beefy take on Street Fighter protagonist, Ryu. Thanks to the new Street Fighter 6 trailer revealed as part of Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, though, we now know the game will feature so much more than that.
At first glance, the trailer clearly reveals four confirmed characters in action. Ryu is back, of course, retaining his fan-favorite beard from his Street Fighter 5 alternate outfit. Series regular Chun-Li also returns, shown fighting her adopted daughter Li-Fen at one point (Li-Fen’s teenage appearance suggests that we’re finally going past Street Fighter III in the timeline). Na Jiazuo’s debut feature-length film “Streetwise” is dedicated to all souls in need of comfort, none of which any of his protagonists ever gets. Dysfunctional families and the lack of perspective in Zhenwu, (the Sichuan-Chongqing region), are central to the story about 21-year-old debt-collector Dong Zi, a youth who doesn’t feel good about what he is doing, but he does it anyway for one single reason (or so he claims).
“Streetwise” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
One could call “Streetwise” anything but a crime film, despite of more than a couple of murky things going on in its not-so-easy-to-comprehend net of ideas. It is also not a type of social commentary, despite of its story being set against the backdrop of 2004, a year that saw big migrations from rural China to megacities. Kodi Smit-McPhee has maintained a stronghold this awards season for his work as Peter Gordon in Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog.” Pundits and awards enthusiasts have to wonder: has a frontrunner emerged?
Twenty-nine precursor awards have been announced thus far, with 14 naming Smit-McPhee’s darkly psychological turn the best of the year. The next closest actor to his dominance is Troy Kotsur in “Coda” and Jeffrey Wright in “The French Dispatch,” who have picked up three and two wins, respectively. In addition, Smit-McPhee’s also landed Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations, two critical stops on the awards circuit.
Smit-McPhee is the 16th performer to win both supporting actor honors from both the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. He’s also the youngest person to ever achieve the feat. The others are:

Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project” (2017) Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight” (2016) – Oscar winner J.K. Simmons,...

Streetwise is screening at the 62nd Thessaloniki International Film Festival
One could call “Streetwise” anything but a crime film, despite of more than a couple of murky things going on in its not-so-easy-to-comprehend net of ideas. It is also not a type of social commentary, despite of its story being set against the backdrop of 2004, a year that saw big migrations from rural China to megacities. Zhenwu looks ghastly empty at night, with constant drizzle hanging over it.

Bergman Island (Mia Hansen-Løve)
Parenthood, relationships, and the creative process: three key elements of the cinema of Mia Hansen-Løve casually combine in Bergman Island, a playfully self-aware meta-portrait of the filmmaker and, indeed, of filmmaking itself. Introspective, inventive, and effortlessly calm; it follows a couple, both screenwriters, on an idyllic work retreat to Fårö, an island in the Baltic Sea (population: 498) just off the South East of Sweden. It’s the place Ingmar Bergman called home for the majority of his life, where he made many films and eventually died. – Rory O. (full review)

Dune (Denis Villeneuve)
Denis Villeneuve has surmounted this slew of bad omens, by arguably––in filmmaking terms––making the most impersonal adaptation possible. For all his skill and talent,...
