Nobody knows better than Jason Aldean the cruel and random nature of tragedy.
When he signed up for a benefit concert back in September, he was volunteering to help hurricane victims. But by the time he took the stage in Nashville on Sunday night, he was singing, as well, for the victims of bullets that had rained down on his own Las Vegas concert.
As Aldean told the sold-out crowd at Bridgestone Arena, “It’s been a rough couple months for us up here.”
Aldean’s presence brought a raw immediacy to the evening, and the 40-year-old artist chose to respond with defiance.

After 45 years, Wilbert Jones walked out of a Louisiana prison a free man on Wednesday.
Now 65, Jones was just 19 when he was arrested and subsequently sentenced to life without parole.
But despite spending the majority of his life in prison for a crime he did not commit, Jones said he harbors no grudges, declaring “God is so good,” as he was released, according to the Associated Press.
Jones’ rape conviction was overturned by State District Judge Richard Anderson, who said Jones’ case was “weak at best.”

Did somebody order a buzzkill? Although The Voice’s sudden-death Playoffs are ordinarily a time of high excitement on the show, since Season 13’s were taped rather than being aired live, we wouldn’t get to vote for our favorite contestant(s) until the contenders were whittled down to the Top 12; the decisions before then would rest entirely in the hands (ears?) of the coaches. Where, I ask you, is the fun in that? At least we could be distracted from our annoyance during Monday’s Night 1 by Team Blake and Team JHud’s performances, several of which were so bad,...

In April 1984, Steven Soderbergh was a 21-year-old aspiring filmmaker. Soderbergh had skipped attending college at Louisiana State University in order to try and make it in Hollywood. Soderbergh worked as a game show scorer and a freelance film editor to make money, and one of his efforts to break big apparently included sending a demo reel to George Lucas at Lucasfilm. The young director spent his high school years making a handful of short films on Super 8mm.
Unfortunately, whatever dreams Soderbergh had of getting into the Lucasfilm family were denied when he received a rejection letter returning the tape he sent in. “Please know our returning your tape is in no way a reflection upon its merits,” the letter reads, claiming the volume of videos and ideas Lucasfilm receives each day is so high it’s impossible for Lucas or any executive at the company to see them all.

There is always a response from the entertainment world after these (increasingly frequent) mass shootings occur in the United States. Jeepers Creepers 3 is a mystery wrapped in a riddle nestled inside a piece of human skin an enigma.
Much of that confusion comes down to the prolonged time gap between the long-brewing horror threequel and its predecessor – Jeepers Creepers 2, for instance, first took flight in 2003 – not to mention the heinous controversy involving franchise creator and director, Victor Salva. In short: the filmmaker was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor almost two decades ago, and served 15 months in state prison.
It’s a controversial saga that has resulted in many horror fans distancing themselves from the Jeepers Creepers franchise altogether, and whether Salva deserves another shot behind the lens or not is something we’ll leave to you.
There has, however, been another update from the Jc camp, and it’s a fairly significant one. Bloody Disgusting has confirmed today that the threequel is actually a lot closer to hitting theatres than we thought.

When Steven Soderbergh is asked about the state of filmmaking, he often points to the American films of the ’60s and ’70s as a counterpoint to the broken state of today’s industry. “The bottom line is that at a certain period in time, from 1966 to 1976, the most successful movies were also the best movies, and that’s just not true anymore,” the director said in a 2014 interview.

Soderbergh may complain a lot, but he’s never been passive about it. Throughout his career, he has constantly experimented with different ways to make and distribute his films by thinking outside the box and pioneering new technology. A stand-up comedy show isn’t the likeliest place to find a second grader, but Daphne Watson was not about to let her daughter Cece miss the opportunity to meet her idol, Kevin Hart.

After the show, Watson brought Cece backstage, only to find Hart had already left the venue. But instead of giving up, Watson took to social media to ask her daughter’s followers to message the...

I've enjoyed the first two films made in the Jeepers Creepers horror film franchise and today we have some additional information regarding Jeepers Creepers 3. The film recently completed shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and thanks to Bloody-Disgusting, we have a few new details you might be interested in.
The site confirms that the third film in the franchise is a direct sequel to the first film that was released in 2001, which saw a brother and sister, played by Justin Long and Gina Philips, cross paths with the deadly creature who feasts on the body parts of humans.
The movie will also serve as a bridge that leads right into the events of Jeepers Creepers 2. So this third movie is both a sequel and a prequel, which I think is kinda cool. The story follows "a group of hunters (led by Meg Foster), completely aware of the Creeper’s mythology,...

It’s a controversial saga that has resulted in many horror fans distancing themselves from the Jeepers Creepers franchise altogether, and whether Victor Salva deserves another shot behind the lens or not is something we’ll leave to you.
There has, however, been another update from the Jc camp. First reported by Bloody Disgusting, it’s now been claimed that Jeepers Creepers 3 has been angled as a direct sequel...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of the Cannes Film Festival, the 70th edition of which starts this week, what is the best film to ever win the coveted Palme d’Or?
For a complete list of Palme d’Or winners, click here.
Erin Whitney (@Cinemabite), ScreenCrush
This question is impossible because I clearly haven’t seen all 40 Palme d’Or winners (it’s on my to do list, I swear). But I could easily say “Apocalypse Now,” “Paris, Texas,” “Taxi Driver,” “Amour,” or even “Pulp Fiction.” But since this is a personal question, I have to say “The Tree of Life.” No film has moved me...

The dilemma of a film like Stanley Nelson’s sweeping and emotionally-charged new documentary Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities is that any one of its rich stories — the founding of any Hbcu, the role they’ve played in the civil rights era, the role they play now as safe spaces for students of color arriving from high schools without students or teachers of color, the individual narratives of students that had attended or are attending them presently, the challenges faced by HBCUs today — could be its own stand-alone feature film. With that said, Tell Them We Are Rising is superbly crafted and in only 83 minutes provides an introduction to the history of HBCUs in America with interviews from students currently attending thriving schools like Spelman, Morehouse, and Howard.
Along the way, Nelson captures a certain irony as students struggle to liberate their...
