A Sylvester Stallone Sci-Fi Flop Nearly Became An Action-Horror Movie Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger
It took a long time for Sylvester Stallone to play a comic book hero. The man became an instant star with his self-written "Rocky" in 1976 and spent the following decade and a half becoming one of Hollywood's pre-eminent action heroes, alongside his longtime rival Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sly and Schwarzenegger were the epitome of the ultra-masculine action heroes we associate with the '80s, but throughout that entire decade and the first half of the '90s, neither played a superhero on-screen.
Schwarzenegger wouldn't end up taking the comic book movie plunge until 1997, when he was guilted into playing Mr. Freeze in the historic blunder that was "Batman & Robin." But Sly actually made his superhero debut prior to that, starring as the titular judge in 1995's "Judge Dredd," the most nonsensical science fiction movie to predict our terrifying present. Following what was the first of several career lows in the late-'80s and early-'90s,...

In 1975, the sci-fi movies Death Race 2000 and Rollerball depicted 21st century futures that still feel relevant 50 years later.
In the middle of the 1970s, a group of filmmakers peered into the future and saw a hellscape of cruelty and violence. Released within months of each other in 1975, Death Race 2000 and Rollerball imagine 21st century dystopias where bloodthirsty competitions play out on TV.
The films are similar in genre and theme, but stylistically poles apart; one is blackly comic, the other grim-faced; one is pluckily low-budget, the other grand and expensive-looking. All the same, Death Race 2000 and Rollerball both offer a fascinating glimpse of the 21st century that, for all the 70s hairstyles and clothing, looks strangely recognisable.
Death Race 2000 came out first, but that was because producer Roger Corman, the wily old rascal, caught wind of Rollerball being in production and hurriedly commissioned a dystopian sports film of his own.

Sylvester Stallone's "Judge Dredd" is not remembered as one of the best sci-fi movies ever, to say the least. Lambasted by critics and disliked by audiences, the 1995 film earned a disappointing $113.5 million at the global box office against a $90 million budget and remains conspicuously absent from lists of Stallone's finest films.
To his credit, Stallone hasn't attempted to bury his futuristic flop. Instead, he's been known to discuss the film when the opportunity calls for it. In 2006, the star addressed some of the issues "Judge Dredd" had while answering fan questions for Ain't It Cool News:
"I think, from what I recall, the whole project was troubled from the beginning. The philosophy of the film was not set in stone – by that I mean 'Is this going to be a serious drama or with comic overtones' like other science fiction films that were successful? So a lotta pieces just didn't fit smoothly.

John Lithgow is no stranger to playing villains. The actor has played a number of standout roles over the course of his fifty-plus-year career, particularly excelling and gaining notoriety for his memorable supporting characters. In addition to providing the voice of the villainous Lord Farquad in Shrek (2001), Lithgow played villain characters in Ricochet (1991), Bombshell (2019), Blow Out (1981), Raising Cane (1992), and the Dexter TV show. He also appeared as a larger-than-life villain in a 1993 movie starring Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone has been a fixture of the action genre for decades, getting his start with Rocky in 1976 and continuing to play the iconic boxer in a handful of sequels. He's also known for playing tortured veteran Rambo, of course, a role that dates back to 1982's First Blood. Since then, Stallone has appeared in action movies like Cobra (1986), Demolition Man (1993), Judge Dredd (1995), The Expendables (2014), Bullet to the Head (2012) and Escape Plan (2013). The ‘90s family movie classic The Sandlot starred a bunch of kid actors, James Earl Jones, and, of course, two dudes in a massive dog costume. Also in the cast was comedian Denis Leary, who played Smalls’ stepdad Bill. In a surprise twist, he turned out to not be an asshole.
The Sandlot, which came out in 1993, was Leary’s first real movie role. Later that same year, he would show up in Demolition Man as the guerrilla rebel soldier whose complaints about fascist dystopias wouldn’t seem out of place in an ‘80s comedy club.
But despite the fact that he clearly wasn’t a seasoned actor at that point in his career, Leary still had some big demands while shooting The Sandlot. At one point in the film, Bill offers to play catch with Smalls, inadvertently giving him a black eye in the process. In 2023, prop master Terry Haskell...

Imagine if, in modern times, the role of let’s say, DC’s Sgt. Rock went to the literal Rock, Dwayne Johnson. Imagine that he was given creative control over the high budget state of the art project despite having no idea who Sgt. Rock even was initially. Finally, imagine he decided to make it in the vein of all of his films, hiring Kevin Hart to be his sidekick, and royally pissing off fans of the source material along the way. That’s the best modern analogy I can come up with for what happened to 1995’s Judge Dredd. A film that had crew members allegedly taking bets on their director’s life expectancy, an NC17 rating, and Sylvester Stallone screaming I Am The Law!!! This is what happened to Judge Dredd.

By 1993, Sylvester Stallone's career was in a precarious place. The "Rocky" and "Rambo" star hadn't yet reached the stage where he could be described as washed up — a point he arguably reached by the early 2000s before reviving his career with the excellent "Rocky Balboa." But the early '90s were a tricky time for Stallone. His last "Rambo" movie, 1988's "Rambo III" had failed to make as much as its predecessor and his last "Rocky" movie, 1990's "Rocky V" was a historic low point for the franchise that originally made Sly a star. Once Arnold Schwarzenegger tricked Stallone into starring in the 1992 flop "Stop! Or my Mom will Shoot," the man's career was in serious jeopardy.
In 1993, however, Stallone had somewhat of a mini comeback, starting with mountain climbing action thriller "Cliffhanger," which was not only a commercial success but managed to impress enough critics that it seemed...

In the early 2000s, Sylvester Stallone was arguably at the lowest point of his career. Having written himself into Hollywood with "Rocky" in 1976, the actor had gone on to redefine action movies as one of the most significant action stars of the '80s. When 1988's "Rambo III" and 1990's "Rocky V" failed to connect with audiences and critics, however, it seemed his time in the spotlight might have been waning. It didn't help that his longtime rival Arnold Schwarzenegger tricked him into appearing in the flop "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot" in 1992.
In spite of this, the always resilient actor found his way back to relevancy by starring in 1993's "Cliffhanger". That same year, he also starred opposite Wesley Snipes in the box office hit "Demolition Man," which isn't remembered quite as fondly as his rock climbing actioner but was a commercial success that has garnered somewhat of...

Before becoming a romcom icon, thanks to leading roles in The Proposal and The Lake House, Sandra Bullock was a bona-fide action star during the '90s and 00s, with major roles in Demolition Man, and the Speed franchise. But, one of Bullock's often-forgotten, and vastly underappreciated action flicks came six years after Speed, when Bullock starred in Miss Congeniality. For those that have never seen the action comedy, or won't pass up an opportunity for a long-overdue re-watch, it's currently a hit on streaming.
Miss Congeniality was recently added to Netflix, and flew up the streamer's Top 10 most popular movies of the week list. At the time of writing, Miss Congeniality is the 4th most popular movie on Netflix. The film sits behind Amy Schumer's latest comedy, Kinda Pregnant, in 1st, with The Menu and Back in Action in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. When it comes to William Shatner, the first thing we all think of is his turn as James T. Kirk on Star Trek: The Original Series and its subsequent films. After that, we probably think of Rescue: 911, T.J. Hooker, Boston Legal, his Priceline commercials, and maybe his many cameos across television. Somewhere after his latest Rt show, and right after a random photo of him riding a horse, we get to TekWar.
What is TekWar, you ask? Well, it's William Shatner's attempt to create a hip and timely story of the growing concerns around internet addiction and the rampant drug use of the late 1980s and early 1990s. It started as a book series, which was mostly written by Ron Goulart, even if Shatner came up with the idea, and later became a television show.

Thirty years ago, Keanu Reeves starred in Johnny Mnemonic, a film that began as a low-budget thriller before it was retooled as a would-be blockbuster.
It must take a considerable amount of willpower to go through a horrendous filmmaking experience and then pretend to journalists that everything’s fine. While moments of candour do occur in movie-making, the repercussions are seldom pretty; actor Shia Labeouf burned several bridges when he openly criticised Indiana Jones sequel The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull – in which he starred as Indy’s son – at Cannes in 2010.
Artist and filmmaker Robert Longo was probably wise to keep his own counsel, then, when he began promoting his feature debut Johnny Mnemonic in 1995. What had begun as a small sci-fi indie film had blown up into a would-be summer blockbuster starring Keanu Reeves; originally, Longo wanted to make a subversive cyberpunk thriller inspired by some of his favourite genre films,...

It’s hard to believe, but the queen of charming rom-coms and edge-of-your-seat thrillers Sandra Bullock, once strolled into Razzie history like it was her personal red carpet. Cinemas want you to pre-book your tickets. Historically, cinemas have also not made this job particularly easy.
It’s a difficult piece for me to write this, given that I love the cinema, and that picturehouses around the world are in such challenging times. I still contend though that sometimes, the modern multiplex can be its own worst enemy.
There’s a video down at the bottom of this post where I natter about this a little bit more, but my technically excellent local cinema, which I’ve been a patron of since the 1990s when it first opened, isn’t short of its annoying quirks. An unlimited pass that now has restrictions on which seat you can book, pic ‘n’ mix that lists the individual calories per sweet (can’t touch the stuff ever again now) and an Argos-style way of ordering your food and drink. On the (significant) plus side,...

Hollywood has seen its fair share of wild moments, but nothing tops the cringe-fest that was Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock’s “intimate” scene in one film. Picture this: a futuristic world, two A-listers, and a hilariously awkward take on romance that’s more Wi-Fi than fireworks.

One of the most surprising films in Sandra Bullock’s early filmography has to be Demolition Man. It is safe to say that the combination was an unlikely one.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger had been fierce rivals during their heyday as the bonafide action stars of the ‘80s and the ‘90s. Their feud has been well documented and the two have also admitted to many of the petty things they did when they were rivals. This included references and jokes on each other in their respective movies.
In Stallone’s sci-fi film Demolition Man, a small detail establishes Arnold Schwarzenegger as a former President of the United States. Despite the law preventing non-natural-born citizens from being Potus, the Sandra Bullock starrer also claims about a law that eradicated that rule. This reportedly almost became a reality around the time Schwarzenegger became Governor.

Dig through cinema's litter box and all kinds of "gems" exist. Yeah, there are serious stinkers that require sage to cleanse rooms from their after-effects, but there are also diamonds in the rough -- the 'so-bad-it's-good' movies that keep audiences coming back over and over again. From a critical perspective, these productions are far from great in various criteria, but viewers don't care about such frivolous matters. The films hold a certain charm and captivating magic that money can't buy, possessing the ability to lift moods through the mere mention of their names.
Lest we forget, cinema proves to be a subjective experience. One person's Uwe Boll is another's Martin Scorsese. As long as everyone's enjoying themselves, let them. There's no need to be the gatekeeper of joy in life.
From slashers in space to snakes on a plane, let's fill up that watchlist for the next few weeks with the 15 best 'so-bad-it's-good' movies.

Glen Powell is going from The Running Man to sci-fi erotic thriller Homewreckers – assuming Hollywood picks up the tab.
Busy man is Glen Powell, and can’t help wondering if he’s been watching the bit in Demolition Man when Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock sit opposite each and, well, ‘engage’ with one another. Surely that’s Demolition Man, right?
In this case, Powell is set to star in and produce the movie, which is going by the name of Homewreckers. It’s based on the novella of the same name, that’s been penned by Neil Paik. Paik is also set to write the adaptation for the film version.

Sylvester Stallone was one of the biggest action stars of the ‘80s and the ‘90s but he had one of the fiercest rivals in Arnold Schwarzenegger. The two were part of a long-standing feud where they constantly competed with each other not just in box office numbers but also in kill counts. The feud reportedly even involved them trying to ruin each others’ careers.
While the duo have since reconciled, the stories of the feud still hold a large space in pop culture history. However, Schwarzenegger may have bested Stallone in one aspect i.e. his wit. The former Governor of California mentioned that he once included a subtle message to legislators and then acted coy when the media asked him.

Take the toughest, most ruthless cop and pit him against the most brutally sadistic criminal in a near-future Los Angeles—a hellish vision of the city that presupposes that the 1992 riots never stopped—and you’ve got a quintessential early-’90s Hollywood action film setup. Marco Brambilla’s Demolition Man starts in 1996, but after John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) and Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) are frozen in a cryogenic prison after a deadly square-off, they awaken again in 2032, only to be greeted by a sanitized, peaceful “utopia” in which swearing, smoking, meat-eating, “gasoline, uneducational toys, and anything spicy” have been banned.
With the population effectively neutered, even the cops have been reduced to enforcing petty tickets, mere shells of their former hyper-violent selves. “We’re police officers. Sandra Bullock is one of the most recognized actresses in the world. The Miss Congeniality star is known for her balance of intense and feel-good roles as well as her relatable off-screen persona. She has won the Academy Award once for The Blind Side and was also nominated for Gravity. She was also one of the highest-paid actresses.
Bullock has achieved a lot in her over thirty-year career and continues to play intense and noteworthy roles. However, like any other actor, she struggled to get a break before she made a name for herself with Speed. While the film launched her into the stratosphere, she came from an incredibly talented family.

The '90s were a special time for sci-fi. With the release of Jurassic Park and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, film studios began to recognize the practical potential of CGI and other special effects. Films like The Matrix revolutionized cinema with techniques such as slow motion, influencing not only sci-fi and action films but nearly every genre across the industry. However, many 90s sci-fi films were overlooked at the time and are only now receiving the appreciation they deserve.
A lot of great sci-fi films from the '90s had a dark, grungy aesthetic that made them less family-friendly, thereby limiting their audience. Several were independent productions that had to find creative ways to work around small budgets. Additionally, 90s sci-fi often leaned into the strange and unconventional, which led to poor reception from critics and a lack of awareness among general audiences. Sandra Bullock starred alongside Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes in the futuristic film, Demolition Man, in 1993. This was a role that Bullock took on before her Speed fame and it was mostly considered a cheesy yet watchable action film. Elon Musk recently addressed the film in a tweet, where he shared a video of him talking to Stallone.

Musk shared that he was telling Stallone about how his film predicted one aspect of the future. Bullock is not likely to be entertained by this comment from Musk. Stallone and Musk were present at Mar-a-Lago where the next President Donald Trump hosted this year’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Cliffhanger, one of two Sylvester Stallone features from 1993 (and one of his most underrated action films ever), will be available to stream in December on Paramount+. The streamer is adding several big titles next month, with Cliffhanger being one of the most exciting titles in the refreshed library.
Cliffhanger is set to be added to Paramount+ on December 1, and fans will be able to enjoy this underrated Stallone epic in all its glory. Known for its big-scale set pieces and its nail-biting opening sequence, the expensive movie ($70 million in 1993 was quite the production budget) made over $255 million at the box office and proved Stallone could still drive ticket sales.

You have three seconds to name Wesley Snipes’ best ‘90s action movie: Go! As the numbers tally, only six options remain: New Jack City, Passenger 57, Boiling Point, Rising Sun, Demolition Man, and Blade. If we’re talking crime-action, New Jack City reigns supreme. Horror-Action? Blade all damn day. Sci-Fi Action? Demolition Man is too silly to miss. But if we’re simply counting hyper-violent, hard-boiled action fare – it’s hard to elevate above Passenger 57 – a lean, mean, bullet-laced blitzkrieg of thrilling throwback action made in the wake of Die Hard. In the film, Snipes portrays John Cutter, a badass airport security expert who finds himself in a hijacked airliner overrun by Charles “The Rane of Terror” Rane and his undercover henchmen.
Despite overtly adopting the Die Hard formula of isolating a grumpy, charismatic hero in a single location and pitting them against a troupe of gun-toting terrorists, Passenger 57...

Despite being an independent, low-budget film, New Jack City quickly became a hit with viewers and critics when it released in 1991. The late 1980s and 1990s saw a boom of movies exploring the ravages of the crack cocaine epidemic and the war on drugs, and New Jack City remains one of the best. It received praise for its writing, directing, performance, and stylized portrayal of a serious problem in the United States. Perhaps its most enduring legacy, however, is the role it played in launching the career of actor Wesley Snipes.
Throughout the '90s, Wesley Snipes enjoyed a status as one of the major action-film stars of the time. Appearing in hits like Demolition Man, Passenger 57, and U.S. Marshals, Snipes made a name for himself with his tough demeanor and martial arts skills. These qualities led to him being cast as the lead in Blade, one of the first hit Marvel movies.

Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarized police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence. In this ingenious mixture of visionary science fiction and speculative nonfiction, Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy) transports us to a future foreshadowed by the terrifying realities of our present moment. Wesley Snipes, the actor perhaps most widely known for starring as vampire hunter Blade, is ready to unsheath a new chapter in his Hollywood career, signing with Independent Artist Group for representation.
The actor and martial artist, who reprised his Blade role to the delight of fans in this summer’s $1.3 billion-grossing Deadpool & Wolverine, has an acting career that spans over three decades and reaches across genres. The actor gained notices for his 1990s work in dramas such as Jungle Fever, his influential crime movie New Jack City, comedic fare such as To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and action flicks Demolition Man and Passenger 57.
Blade seemed like an innocuous action thriller when it was released in 1998 but the movie, exuding tough attitude and replete with one-liners, launched a trilogy that has gained in stature and influence since the final installment came out in 2004. When Snipes...

A terrible X-Men quote just got referenced by Marvel 24 years after the films initial release. The 2000 movie was what started the X-Mens success. Professor Xs class of mutants was introduced to audiences with positive reception. Since then, a total of 13 films have been released in the franchise so far with each film just getting better in quality. X-Men is a clear product of the year 2000 with some elements aging better than others, but there is one moment in the movie that remains disliked to this day.
During the X-Mens confrontation with Magneto's Brotherhood at the Statue of Liberty, Storm faced off against Toad. What shouldve been a solid moment of the battle has since turned into a joke among fans because of one line in particular. Before striking Toad with lightning, Storm says, Do you know what happens to a toad when its struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else.

There is a moment in "Deadpool & Wolverine" where Wesley Snipes, making his first appearance as Blade in 20 years on the big screen, says "There's only been one Blade. There's only ever gonna be one Blade." While Marvel Studios is currently working on a reboot of the franchise, the project has faced more than a few setbacks. So, for now, there is precisely one actor to play the Daywalker on the silver screen, and that is Snipes. Had things gone another way though, it might have been a different actor we'd now associate with the Marvel Comics antihero. That actor? Denzel Washington.
In a 2018 oral history published by Entertainment Weekly to commemorate the 20th anniversary of "Blade," screenwriter David S. Goyer explained that the studio, in this case New Line Cinema, was having trouble wrapping its head around the concept as it existed.

With an illustrious and decorated career spanning over 50 years, Sylvester Stallone is one of Hollywood's most recognizable leading men, having appeared in a slew of action classics and their respective sequels like Rocky, First Blood, Demolition Man, and the rip-roaring The Expendables franchise. Given his stacked silver screen resume, it was only a matter of time before Stallone would venture into the world of television, masterfully doing so with the help of the brilliant Taylor Sheridan.
Together, the dynamic duo collaborated on the 2022 crime dramedy series Tulsa King, in which Stallone portrays a Mafia capo who, after serving a 25-year prison sentence, is effectively exiled from New York City to Tulsa, Oklahoma. There, he decides to make lemonade from lemons and set up his own empire. The early 2000s were a bad time for Sylvester Stallone professionally. In the mid-nineties, after a short-lived resurgence of three hit movies, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man and The Specialist, Stallone’s career as a bankable action star began to sputter, with Judge Dredd, Assassins and Daylight all losing money. Copland, an indie drama directed by James Mangold, made money and earned Stallone his best reviews since the original Rocky, but his follow-up movies were disastrous. His attempt at a slasher/ horror movie, D-Tox, sat on the shelf for years, finally being released under the lame title Eye See You. His 2000 remake of Get Carter was another disaster, with critics eviscerating him for remaking the Michael Caine classic, with even a cameo from Caine himself not easing their fury. In 2001, he teamed with Cliffhanger’s Renny Harlin on a go-for-broke would-be blockbuster called Driven.

So much for the seashells…1993’s sci-fi actioner and cult favorite Demolition Man will be getting the 4K treatment courtesy of Arrow Video, as revealed in the lineup of their December slate. Arrow isn’t skimping, either – we just hope the future is big enough for the entire set.
This Demolition Man release boasts a brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, which has been approved by director Marco Brambilla. It, too, has Dolby Vision/Hdr. Outside of the technical specs, the Demolition Man 4K will offers two new audio commentaries: one with Brambilla and screenwriter Daniel Waters, and another with film historian Mike White (of the Projection Booth podcast). There is also an archival commentary with Brambilla and producer Joel Silver. Also included are new interviews with the likes of production designer David L. Snyder, stunt coordinator Charles Percini, special makeup effects artist Chris Biggs and body effects set coordinator Jeff Farley.

Have you ever found yourself rooting for the underdog, then rejoicing as they thumb their noses at fate and come out on top? Well, Sandra Bullock in Speed is a prime example of why the phrase “when one door closes, another opens” is gospel truth. Rejected initially yet taking on a pivotal role that redefined her career, this actress, 60, dealt with the Speed snub in a way that would make even the steely-eyed Clint Eastwood grin.

As absurdly simple as the plot sounds, this Jan de Bont-directed gem didn’t just sneak into the 1994 summer blockbusters; it snowballed into the crowd-pleaser of the year. Bullock once candidly discussed her career struggles, showing that she doesn’t take rejection personally. Instead, she views it as a motivator to improve and compete.

Sandra Bullock is a name that immediately takes us back to one of the greatest action films ever made, Speed (1994). Over the years, the 60-year-old actress starred in many box office hits, and it wasn’t just her role as Annie Porter that brought her a lot of recognition in the world of entertainment. Bullock had to work extremely hard before landing major roles in the industry.
The Gravity actress was born on July 26, 1964, to John W. Bullock and Helga Mathilde Meyer in Arlington, Virginia. While both her parents were vocal experts, Bullock loved acting and cheerleading while growing up.

Another fact about the A-lister is that she spent a little over a decade in Germany since her father was stationed as the Army’s Military Postal Service in charge. It was during his time in Nuremberg that he met Meyer.

Action movie star Wesley Snipes is also an experienced martial artist who is skilled in multiple styles. His celebrated combat abilities supported his performance as one of the superhero genre's founding fathers in the original Blade trilogy that kicked off in 1998. Before that, he starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in Demolition Man and became synonymous with exciting action.
Blade actor Wesley Snipes would not have had as successful an acting career without his passion and commitment to training in martial arts. Many of his most famous parts utilize his impressive martial arts prowess, with major projects opening the door for more black actors in action roles. Snipes reprised the legendary Blade in Deadpool and Wolverine, 20 years after his trilogy ended, merging the Fox Universe of Marvel characters into the MCU, and giving comic book movie audiences one last taste of his martial arts skills and highlighting his talent as a physical performer.

The 1990s had plenty of action movie superstars, although many of this era's most notable heroes had lots of movies that have been hugely underrated. While this decade was categorized by major franchises as legendary sequels like Terminator 2 or the dawning of revolutionary series such as The Matrix dominated the conversation, those willing to dig below the surface will be rewarded with incredible hidden gems. As the 1980s stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone continued to hit big at the box office, this was also the heyday for new heroes like Nicolas Cage, Steven Seagal, and Wesley Snipes.
The biggest action movie stars of the 1990s all had several underrated releases that have failed to maintain the same kind of pop culture dominance as their most acclaimed work. This was a real shame, as many of these movies were packed with heart-racing action sequences and spectacular big-budget set...

Sylvester Stallone has been a Hollywood staple for five full decades at this point. Dating back to his first turn as the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa in 1972's "Rocky," the actor has been a mainstay of the screen. Like any actor who has managed to stay in the game this long, Stallone has had his ups and downs, but he's still here and still relevant more than 50 years later. But what is the best movie that Stallone has ever been in? What is the defining moment of the actor's varied filmography?
Not that Rotten Tomatoes is the be-all, end-all for such a discussion, but the review aggregator is a measuring stick often used in the modern era. Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, 2015's "Creed" stands tall above the rest of Stallone's films with a 95% approval rating. That is not all that surprising when we break it down (more on that...

Sylvester Stallone has made a name for himself as one of the greatest action movie stars of all time, but plenty of highly underrated entries in his filmography need more attention. While Stallone will always be known for characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, hes far from the kind of one-dimensional performer hes sometimes made out to be. Throughout his career, Stallone surprised viewers with incredible performances in heartfelt dramas, screwball comedies, and intense neo-noir thrillers.
Many of the best Sylvester Stallone movies have become touchstones in modern popular culture, while other fantastic films have been doomed to obscurity. While some maligned movies, such as comedies like Oscar, have failed to gain the reappraisal they so rightfully deserve, other underrated entries have been recognized by cinephiles yet remain woefully unknown by mainstream audiences. Across his vast and varied catalog, there were plenty of underrated Stallone movies that viewers should give a second chance.

Asif Kapadia––the biographical documentary wiz behind contemporary classics like Senna and Amy––opens his semi-fictional film 2073 in a flurry of doc footage. Wildfires, floods, and other such natural disasters set the tone while disturbing clips of cops bashing skulls and riot police brutalizing innocent people cement it for the next 85 minutes. Then comes the fiction: it’s been 37 years since “The Event,” and we’re in the future: the year 2073.
Thinly conceived sociopolitical dystopian circumstances crash across the screen in a somewhat thrilling, somewhat unintentionally funny (e.g. “Chairwoman Trump Celebrates 30th Year in Power”) newsreel continuation of the montage that ultimately sets up the thematic narrative advertised by the title and presence of Samantha Morton in-character in a documentary. We’re in New San Francisco, the capital of the United States in 2073, which resembles a very familiar dystopia.
We don’t know what “The Event” was that led them here,...
