Finn Wolfhard’s transition from actor to filmmaker took a step forward this year with the release of Hell of a Summer, a horror-comedy he co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in alongside Billy Bryk. The film, now in theaters, follows a group of summer camp counselors facing a masked killer over one increasingly deadly night in the woods.
Wolfhard spoke with Yahoo Entertainment about the project and pointed to Jesse Eisenberg as a key influence. After acting in Eisenberg’s 2022 directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World, Wolfhard said he paid close attention to Eisenberg’s process on set. “It was so fascinating to watch him work,” Wolfhard said. “Something that really stuck with me was how light he was on set and how much of a fun environment he created.”

For Finn Wolfhard, making the leap from child actor to writer/director was much easier with a mentor like Jesse Eisenberg.
After he and Hell of a Summer co-writer/co-director/co-star Billy Bryk worked with Eisenberg on his 2022 directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World, Wolfhard noted the experience “really stuck with me” as he got “tons” of advice from Eisenberg on their parallel trajectories.
“It was so fascinating to watch him work,” Wolfhard told Yahoo Entertainment. “Something that really stuck with me was how light he was on set and how much of a fun environment he created. If we ever wanted to joke around or do something funny, he really gave us the time and ability to do that. He just wanted it to be fun, even though the movie was often quite serious and there were very dramatic parts.”

Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard addressed the possibility of Devon Sawa’s return in the upcomingIdle Hands reboot, which Wolfhard is currently co-writing with frequent collaborator Billy Bryk. In the original horror comedy, Sawa played the role of a stoner teenager whose hand gets suddenly possessed by an evil spirit.
When the Idle Hands reboot was first announced, it was revealed that Sony Pictures was also considering Wolfhard and Bryk to direct the project. Speaking with ComicBook, when asked about helming the reboot and Devon Sawa’s potential appearance, Wolfhard admitted that nothing is really clear yet since its current status is still “Tbd. Tbd on [us directing and bringing back Sawa], I would say.” Should the creative duo get enlisted as directors, the project would mark as their second directorial effort, after Neon’s slasher comedy Hell of a Summer. The latest dystopian thriller starring horror icon Devon Sawa is set to release in theaters before going to digital platforms. Mackenzie Donaldson's All the Lost Ones was set to go straight to digital services at first, but Epic Pictures has picked it up for a small theatrical window. The film will now receive a limited release in theaters on April 18, 2025, and four days later — on April 22 — it will be available for digital purchase or rent. This is great news for the relatively small film and also for the film industry at large, as independent features rarely receive theatrical windows — especially in times when streaming has taken such a big role in terms of releasing lesser-known films.
All the Lost Ones had its premiere at the 2024 Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival. Its synopsis describes the film thusly: "In a dystopian and climate-ravaged future America torn apart by civil war, Nia,...

The ensemble cast includes Devon Sawa, Douglas Smith, Jasmine Mathews, Sheila McCarthy, Steven Ogg, Vinessa Antoine and Lochlyn Munro.

Finn Wolfhard might be growing beyond Stranger Things stardom, but he still credits the show as a rite of passage. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on how his time on the Netflix hit prepared him for Hell of a Summer, his directorial debut.
"I grew up on that set and was really interested in filmmaking and would stay every day after I would be done," Wolfhard said.
Known for his breakout role in Stranger Things, the actor-turned-director recalled sticking around post-curfew "just to watch the filmmakers make the show." The Netflix set became a classroom, an informal crash course ahead of Wolfhard pursuing a career in directing.
"There's a lot of stuff that I definitely learned from that and the way you communicate to crew and actors."

After making a splash at the Oscars with Anora, Neon is following it up with Hell of a Summer, the teen comedy-slasher film from co-directors Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk.
Neon releases Hell of Summer in theaters April 4 following its premiere at TIFF in 2023. The ensemble cast includes Wolfhard and Bryk alongside Fred Hechinger, D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai and Abby Quinn in the story of a masked killer targeting the counselors at a summer camp in the woods. The Hollywood Reporter can share exclusive first-look images above and below, along with a new clip.
Wolfhard and Bryk, who connected while working as young actors on the set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, started working together on the script for Hell of a Summer back in 2019. “I loved slasher and horror films growing up, but something that Billy and I really bonded over was our shared love of comedy, and specifically teen comedies,” Wolfhard tells THR.

When picking the next show to cover, I always ask myself: what’s something I used to watch that people either loved or completely forgot about—but should still love? This time, it’s Dark Angel. When I mentioned Dark Angel to someone, they immediately assumed I meant a different show. “No,” I said, “the one with Jessica Alba.” She was great in Idle Hands, but Dark Angel? That was something else. Honestly, I’m a little surprised I even watched it back then.
James Cameron—who needs no introduction—teamed up with Charles H. Eglee to make Dark Angel his first big project under his production company. Eglee, of course, is best known for Piranha 2… sure, he’s done other things, but for the sake of this episode, that’s the only credit that matters. There are many cult classics that fans have clamored to have a sequel made of, and there might be none bigger in recent memory than 2009's Jennifer's Body. The film was stifled by a poor marketing campaign that stalled its box office, but it did go on to become a cult hit in the years since its release as fans began to see writer Diablo Cody's true intentions for the movie. As the cult status of Jennifer's Body has grown, sequel news has continued to surface every so often, but fans might have just gotten the biggest hint yet that the follow-up is in the works from one of the film's stars, Amanda Seyfried.
During a Toronto screening of her film Seven Veils, via Bloody Disgusting, Seyfried was asked about a sequel to Jennifer's Body, and the actress gave a confident answer before essentially downplaying the confirmation. Seyfried said,...

Jessica Alba has been in the entertainment industry since the late 1990s, and her screen presence has earned her a well-deserved fan following. Breaking out with Max Guevara in Dark Angel to Sue Storm in Fantastic Four, Alba has shown the ability to be a lead star in blockbuster thrillers as well as the ability to pull off character-driven screenplays.

Stoner culture and horror movies go together like chips and queso—a match made in heaven (or perhaps hell). There’s something about the mind-expanding vibes of stoner humor mixed with the surreal, the gory, and the downright absurd that makes this subgenre irresistible. Whether it’s the paranoia of supernatural forces, the dark hilarity of a hapless stoner fighting demons, or the trippy visual stylings of a psychedelic horror trip, stoner horror films offer something uniquely enjoyable.
The appeal probably lies in the way these films can blend laughter and terror. Stoner protagonists are often laid-back, lovable underdogs thrust into insane scenarios, bringing an everyman charm that audiences root for. These films don’t just deliver scares—they also lean into the bizarre, often embracing wildly imaginative plots that break traditional horror conventions. With their mix of self-awareness, satire, and creative insanity, stoner horror movies are perfect for those...

After duking it out with death, there’s not much further up the horror chain that you can climb, but Devon Sawa has done that and then some. Sawa appeared in the iconic 2000 film, Final Destination, which kicked-off a franchise that continues to go strong with the upcoming release of Final Destination: Bloodlines. Before that, he entered the horror-comedy arena through the 1999 film, Idle Hands, which is set to undergo a reboot in the near future. More recently, the actor has appeared in multiple parts in Don Mancini’s small-screen Child’s Play takeover, the gone-too-soon Chucky. And, on February 7, he’ll step into what could easily blossom into a new horror franchise via Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes.

Valentine's Day isn't the type of holiday that warrants a horror film, but several have attempted the change. 2009's My Bloody Valentine grossed $102.8 million, and 2016's Deadpool weighed in on the Valentine's Day holiday to promote the film, although the superhero film was more bloody than romantic.

Hollywood loves to base things on true stories; it takes the whole idea-generating process out of the equation. In fact, even some stories that seem like they had to have been dreamed up by some coked-out bigwig have turned out to be, as improbable as it sounds, inspired by actual events. Such as…

Heart Eyes is about a young woman named Ally (Olivia Holt from Cloak & Dagger) who, while having a rough day at work, meets an attractive stranger named Jay (Mason Gooding from the newer Scream movies). On Feb. 7, the new slasher movie Heart Eyes will make its debut in movie theaters. How well received the film will be remains to be seen, but Devon Sawa thinks the movie's titular killer could become just as iconic as other slasher film icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger.
Heart Eyes tells the story of two co-workers on Valentine's Day who are mistaken for a couple, making them a target of a mysterious murderer. Mostly donning all-black clothing, the killer becomes very recognizable by wearing a mask that has glowing red hearts for eyes. Sawa is one of the stars of the movie, marking his latest horror role after his appearances in Final Destination, Idle Hands, and Chucky. While speaking with Screen Rant about the film, Sawa said that the Heart Eyes killer is "unique" enough to stand out in the genre, potentially becoming a new horror icon.

Summer camp still proves to be a hellish experience for some young adults in the first trailer for Hell of a Summer, which marks the directorial debut of Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard. Judging from the first look, Wolfhard hopes to make this horror comedy a worthy addition to summer camp terror along the lines of Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th.
Co-written with his co-director Billy Byrk, Hell of a Summer revolves around a camp counselor named Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger) who feels a bit out of touch as a 24-year-old working at a summer camp. However, when he arrives at Camp Pineway, he'll soon realize that bonding with his teenage co-workers is the least of his problems, as a masked killer begins picking off the camp counselors one by one.

The turnaround from theatrical to digital is faster when a film has a less-than-desirable run at the box office, and this is true of the disaster horror comedy Y2K. The A24 release opened on Dec. 6 and has grossed a mere $3.8 million on a $15 million budget. It didn't light the box office on fire, but its upcoming digital release will likely expose it to more people who missed it in theaters, as you'll be able to watch it at home just in time for the Christmas and holiday break.
Y2K will be released digitally on Dec. 24, which is perfect timing for a couple of reasons. The target audience for the movie will be on holiday break, and they'll likely be looking for something fun to watch at home. It also arrives right before the New Year, which coincides with the film's theme of ringing in the holiday, albeit without the...

Quick Links 'Idle Hands' Is Very '90s 'Idle Hands' Shines Because It Was Different From Its Horror Movie Counterparts 'Idle Hand's Financial Failure Was Out of Its Control
In the horror comedy Y2K, director Kyle Mooney, with a screenplay assist from Evan Winter, takes us back in time as society was preparing to conquer the Year 2000 problem as they put 1999 behind them. Y2K plays on the fear that technology would take over as soon as the ball dropped and 2000 kicked in and turns that fear into a hilarious reality. It's a true tonal blend, something that can be hard to do successfully. Sometimes, in films like these, the horror is legit, but the comedy is lacking, or the horror is too tame, but the jokes land with more ease. Mooney is successful at blending both, much like director Rodman Flender was back in 1999 with his very own horror comedy.

To some, the 1990s seem like just yesterday. To others, they're a vintage decade with sparse technology and classic, "old" movies. Both can be true at the same time, and when it comes to films from that decade, there was a lot of variety, especially in the realm of horror. While some '90s horror movies didn't age well, some films, like Scream and Death Becomes Her, impacted the genre in an innovative way while playing with familiar themes.
With nostalgia being such a huge part of modern filmmaking, audiences have been drawn to well-known films being reimagined for a new millennium. Many '90s horror movies and their iconic scream queens have already seen sequels and reboots, with some franchises still going strong. Others have been tucked away for over three decades, just waiting for a fresh new take, and some are definitely primed to get updates.

Hollywood has been revisiting a lot of ‘90s teen horror franchises lately, from the new Scream movies, to the I Know What You Did Last Summer TV show, to the Jurassic World series that clearly took its cues from the Denise Richards classic Tammy and the T-Rex.
Now it’s just been announced that Idle Hands is getting a remake (even though it was basically already a remake of that one scene from Army of Darkness).
The new Idle Hands is penned by Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard (of Stranger Things fame), and it will be produced by Jason Reitman. Presumably, a story about demonic possession will be a pleasant change of pace for Reitman after the hellish nightmare that is Saturday Night Live’s backstage politics.

Another beloved movie is about to undergo the remake / reboot treatment next year. 1999’s horror-comedy Idle Hands was a box-office bomb on its initial release, but has since entered the realm of cult favorites.
Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Billy Bryk have been signed to write a “reimagining” of Idle Hands, which is planned to be released in the summer of 2025. They are also in talks to possibly direct the remake. Wolfhard and Bryk previously worked together on another horror-comedy, Hell of a Summer, which they wrote and directed, and starred in together. Stranger Things and Ghostbusters: Afterlife / Frozen Empire actor Finn Wolfhard recently made his feature directorial debut with a horror comedy called Hell of a Summer, which he directed alongside Billy Bryk, who also appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and gave it a 5/10 review than can be read at This Link. Hell of a Summer has secured a U.S. distribution deal with Neon, and will receive a theatrical release sometime in 2025 – and earlier this week, we learned that Wolfhard and Bryk have already lined up their second genre project, as they’re writing a remake of the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands, which they might end up directing as well. The Ghostbusters franchise’s Jason Reitman is on board to produce the film. But what does original Idle Hands star Devon Sawa think of this announcement?...

Sony Pictures is giving the 1999 horror-comedy “Idle Hands” a new lease on life by hiring Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and his writing partner Billy Bryk to give the movie a new spin.
The first movie, which made just over $4 million at the box office, stars Devon Sawa as a teenage girl who has to fight a murderous hand that has been possessed. Even though it didn’t do very well at the box office, the movie has gained many loyal fans over the last twenty years.
The writing team has now been assembled, and Jason Reitman will produce the show with Jennifer and Suzanne Todd. The reboot is part of Sony’s new plan to revive old horror movies. For example, the next “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie is set to come out on July 15, 2025.
Devon Sawa, the original show’s star, has given the idea his full support.

A remake of a cult 1990s teen horror movie is in development with a Stranger Things star set to co-write and possibly direct. Within the horror genre, remakes, reboots, and legacy sequels have become increasingly popular. Recent examples include David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy, which served as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's classic 1978 slasher, and The Exorcist: Believer, which also acted as a direct sequel to the original 1973 film, but was much less successful, causing the planned trilogy to be scrapped with another franchise reboot planned.

The teen horror genre has offered us a series of different titles. Some of which were good, some of which were horrible. But even among those horrible ones, let alone the good ones, there have been several cult classic titles, and Idle Hands, which came out in 1999, is a great example of such a movie.
Back in 1999, the film received mostly negative reviews and bombed completely at the box office ($4.2 million on a c. $25 million budget), but has since gained a cult following and is considered to be one of the classics of the genre, despite all of its shortcomings.
Well, as you can assume, in light of the remake mania that’s been hitting Hollywood in the last decade, Idle Hands is poised to get a remake, and some very interesting names are attached to the project. Which is why we have decided to report on the project.

Wolfhard and Bryk also are being eyed to direct the new “Idle Hands,” following the sale of their festival hit “Hell of a Summer,” which they co-wrote, co-directed, co-starred in and produced. In August, Neon acquired horror-comedy “Hell of a Summer,” which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in 2023, garnering critical acclaim for the duo. The indie distributor behind horror breakout “Longlegs” plans to release the film in summer 2025.

To celebrate Halloween, join Bloody FM’s The Horror Show as they cover Idle Hands with director Rodman Flender.
Sean and Joe are joined by Rodman Flender in this special Halloween episode of The Horror Show. Flender speaks of the movies that inspired him as a child and discusses being an undergrad in film at Harvard. He goes on to tell how a short-film he made while in the program had staff whispering about his potential expulsion, and how this led to him getting his start in horror and being taken under the wing of the late Roger Corman.
He also recounts how one of his first projects was frankenstein–ing The Terror (1960) and the ways that working with Corman influenced his entire career. He touches on directing the infamous episode “The Scare” of Dawson’s Creek and the inadvertent multiverse he and Kevin Williamson share.

It’s officially spooky season, and if you’re looking to watch something a little scarier than love in the afternoon, check out these horror movies and TV shows starring some familiar faces from daytime.
From Drama To Horror
While many soap stars tend to stick to dramas or Hallmark Channel romcoms – find out what soap stars will be on Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas this year – some have branched out to an unexpected genre: horror. If you want to add some familiar faces to a spooky movie night this Halloween, add these to your list of must-watches.
General Hospital
Idle Hands, starring Kelly Monaco
This 1999 horror film stars Devon Sawa and Jessica Alba and follows a teenaged boy who’s hand becomes possessed and goes on a murderous rampage. It certainly didn’t win any Oscars, but it does feature a young Kelly Monaco as one of the victims.

The 1990s introduced several comedy films that have become classics within the genre, but there are a few releases from the decade that deserve just as much respect. Respected comedic actors like Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller are known for their work in the '90s and though there were many successes for the two, they are not exempt from having a few unappreciated comedies. Most of the overlooked comedies from the time have gone on to acquire cult followings, but remain largely disrespected by average moviegoers.
One thing that makes these films worthy of respect is their ambition to create something original in the comedy genre. Films like Mystery Men, BASEketball, and Idle Hands make noteworthy attempts to elevate their basic comedic premise, including elements of other genres like horror. With every decade that's passed since these films' original releases, there's a better chance audiences are now more willing to give them another chance.
