Finn Wolfhard’s transition from actor to filmmaker took a step forward this year with the release of Hell of a Summer, a horror-comedy he co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in alongside Billy Bryk. The film, now in theaters, follows a group of summer camp counselors facing a masked killer over one increasingly deadly night in the woods.

Wolfhard spoke with Yahoo Entertainment about the project and pointed to Jesse Eisenberg as a key influence. After he and Hell of a Summer co-writer/co-director/co-star Billy Bryk worked with Eisenberg on his 2022 directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World, Wolfhard noted the experience “really stuck with me” as he got “tons” of advice from Eisenberg on their parallel trajectories.

“It was so fascinating to watch him work,” Wolfhard told Yahoo Entertainment. “Something that really stuck with me was how light he was on set and how much of a fun environment he created. If we ever wanted to joke around or do something funny, he really gave us the time and ability to do that. He just wanted it to be fun, even though the movie was often quite serious and there were very dramatic parts.”

The country has descended into violent disarray in the forthcoming thriller feature All the Lost Ones.

Director Mackenzie Donaldson’s film is set to hit select theaters on April 18 from Epic Pictures before debuting via digital platforms on April 22, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal. The ensemble cast includes Devon Sawa, Douglas Smith, Jasmine Mathews, Sheila McCarthy, Steven Ogg, Vinessa Antoine and Lochlyn Munro.

All the Lost Ones is set amid a dystopian America, where a civil war has torn the nation apart. The film centers on a group of individuals hiding out in a cabin when they are targeted by a ruthless rebel militia leader and his platoon.

“This is what you want?” a desperate Mathews asks in the trailer that can be seen below. “Turn ourselves in to the armed maniacs in the woods?”

Later in the footage, Sawa warns, “Nobody here is innocent.”

Finn Wolfhard might be growing beyond Stranger Things stardom, but he still credits the show as a rite of passage. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on how his time on the Netflix hit prepared him for Hell of a Summer, his directorial debut.

"I grew up on that set and was really interested in filmmaking and would stay every day after I would be done," Wolfhard said.

Known for his breakout role in Stranger Things, the actor-turned-director recalled sticking around post-curfew "just to watch the filmmakers make the show." The Netflix set became a classroom, an informal crash course ahead of Wolfhard pursuing a career in directing.

After making a splash at the Oscars with Anora, Neon is following it up with Hell of a Summer, the teen comedy-slasher film from co-directors Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk.

Neon releases Hell of Summer in theaters April 4 following its premiere at TIFF in 2023. The ensemble cast includes Wolfhard and Bryk alongside Fred Hechinger, D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai and Abby Quinn in the story of a masked killer targeting the counselors at a summer camp in the woods. Y2K plays on the fear that technology would take over as soon as the ball dropped and 2000 kicked in and turns that fear into a hilarious reality. It's a true tonal blend, something that can be hard to do successfully. Sometimes, in films like these, the horror is legit, but the comedy is lacking, or the horror is too tame, but the jokes land with more ease. Mooney is successful at blending both, much like director Rodman Flender was back in 1999 with his very own horror comedy.

To some, the 1990s seem like just yesterday. To others, they're a vintage decade with sparse technology and classic, "old" movies. Both can be true at the same time, and when it comes to films from that decade, there was a lot of variety, especially in the realm of horror. While some '90s horror movies didn't age well, some films, like Scream and Death Becomes Her, impacted the genre in an innovative way while playing with familiar themes.

The first movie, which made just over $4 million at the box office, stars Devon Sawa as a teenage girl who has to fight a murderous hand that has been possessed. Even though it didn’t do very well at the box office, the movie has gained many loyal fans over the last twenty years.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Tuesday that Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have been hired to write an updated version of the film for Sony Pictures. Jason Reitman is serving as a producer, alongside Team Todd’s Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd. A director has not yet been announced.

Following reports that his 1999 teen cult classic Idle Hands is being reimagined by screenwriting duo Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, with Jason Reitman producing, Sawa shared his son’s reaction to the news.

“My 10 year old: ‘Awesome!! Finn Wolfhard from the coolest show Stranger Things is making a new movie called Idle Hands!!’ Me: ‘I was in Idle Hands!! I’m the original Anton!!'” he shared on X. “‘Sure dad. Whatever you say. — can I have a snack?'”

And although one follower scoffed at the idea of a reboot, Sawa is looking forward to seeing a new generation’s take. “It’ll be fun. I’m excited,” he wrote.

Directed by Rodman Flender, Idle Hands (1999) stars Sawa as slacker teen Anton, who wakes up to find his parents have been murdered and his right hand is possessed by the devil.

According to Variety, Sony is also keen on Bryk and Wolfhard to direct the film due to their success with another horror comedy, Hell Of A Summer, which the pair wrote, produced and directed together. Hell Of A Summer debuted at Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 to strong reviews and Neon acquired the film for a 2025 release.

The teen horror genre has offered us a series of different titles. Some of which were good, some of which were horrible. But even among those horrible ones, let alone the good ones, there have been several cult classic titles, and Idle Hands, which came out in 1999, is a great example of such a movie.

Back in 1999, the film received mostly negative reviews and bombed completely at the box office ($4.2 million on a c. $25 million budget), but has since gained a cult following and is considered to be one of the classics of the genre, despite all of its shortcomings.

Well, as you can assume, in light of the remake mania that’s been hitting Hollywood in the last decade, Idle Hands is poised to get a remake, and some very interesting names are attached to the project. Which is why we have decided to report on the project.
