Two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson may once again play human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, according to Screen Daily. Nearly twenty years ago, Thompson played Peirce in Jim Sheridan's Academy Award-nominated In the Name of the Father (1993, right), in which she defended Daniel Day-Lewis and several others accused of being Ira terrorists. For her efforts — the accused are eventually released — Thompson earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nod. Despite sharing several elements with Sheridan's movie, this new project is not called In the Name of the Father 2 (or In the Name of the Mother, for that matter). Described as a romantic thriller, The Secret Evidence tells the story of "a young British couple mistakenly caught up in the war on terror who turn to Thompson’s character to get one of them out of prison. However, in fighting for her boyfriend’s freedom, the film’s young female lead finds...

Yes, Jim Sheridan‘s 1993 collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis is getting that rare treatment. Neither are involved, sadly, but Emma Thompson will reprise her role of lawyer Gareth Peirce — who, it should be said, happens to be a real person — for a new thriller, The Secret Evidence. ScreenDaily (via ThePlaylist) reports that Nicholas Racz (The Burial Society) will direct the film, which he’s in the midst of co-writing with Cerie Bullivant. And, while the latter’s no hotshot screenwriter, he himself was detained and put under house arrest for two years on terrorism charges that were never actually proven. His lawyer throughout that ordeal? You can probably figure it out.
Evidence will examine a similar issue, being the story of “a young British couple mistakenly caught up in the war on terror who turn to [Peirce] to get one of them out of prison.” But it gets a little more complicated when the girl — who,...

Back in 1993, Emma Thompson was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of the human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in Jim Sheridan’s “In the Name of the Father,” ultimately losing out (famously) to an 11-year-old Anna Paquin for “The Piano.” Nearly two decades later, Emma Thompson will once again portray the lawyer who famously turned down a Cbe, and has worked alongside clients ranging from the family of Jean Charles de Menezes to the Birmingham Six and Julian Assange. Thompson will revisit the character in the international thriller, “The Secret Evidence.”
The film will focus on a young British couple who are mistakenly caught up in the war on terror and turn to Peirce to help get them out of prison. But in the fight for their freedom, the characters find themselves and their families a target of the U.K. government’s secret service. Nicholas Racz...
