They may not even be back on the big screen yet, but Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele already have fans' hearts racing. With the franchise's final chapter, Fifty Shades Freed, slated for a Valentine's Day 2018 silver screen debut, the film's official trailer just dropped to keep fans on the edge of their seats until Christian Grey and his new wife return. Yes, as evidenced by the trailer (and featured prominently in the book), the two take their relationship from Bdsm to Mr. and Mrs. With new gold bands and a mansion in the woods, the lovers try their hand at married life the Grey way—not without the Red Room, of course. However, it seems Anastasia is calling the shots this...

Everyone likes a little jiggle with their wiggle, so why wouldn’t James Corden make an excellent addition to the “Magic Mike” crew? Channing Tatum isn’t so sure, but he still gave the host of “The Late Late Show” a chance to strut his stuff. In a hilarious new sketch, Corden stopped by an open call led by Tatum and his crew of Adonis-like dancers. The adorable bear had a spring in his step and a song in his heart as he attempted to chest bump, grind the floor, and strip down to his skivvies all in the name of joining the coolest dance crew in town. The results are just as hilarious as you might expect.
Before Corden even gets to dance for Tatum, however, he must convince his ripped buddy using only his persuasive charms and a long string of silly nick names. “Chan,” “Jackie Chan,” “Channy Channy Bang Bang,...

The Netflix-produced “1922” has jolts of violence and sweeping period details, but in a year overrun with Stephen King adaptations, it’s also the simplest of them: “It” features a ludicrous shapeshifting clown, “The Dark Tower” is an inter-dimensional sci-fi western fantasy, and “Gerald’s Game” has kinky sex gone wrong and a giant goal. In “1922,” a guy kills his wife and feels guilty about it. That’s the gist of its premise, and while nothing groundbreaking, the story mines a degree of profundity out of the traditional supernatural thriller tropes at its core.

“American Assassin” opens in theaters this weekend, and it tells a story audiences have heard before: A tragic loss turns a broken young man into a reluctant hero. It’s the same formula that turned Bruce Wayne into Batman, James Bond into 007, and pulls John Wick out of retirement and on a bloody path toward vengeance. Still, despite stiff competition from “It,” audience will go see Dylan O’Brien get mentored by a gruff and reluctant Michael Keaton, hunt down terrorists, and save the day. But that courtesy is rarely extended when women are put into similar circumstances.
When the first trailer for “Red Sparrow” arrived on Sept. 14, it teased Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian ballerina who is recruited by the Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. If the plot sounds familiar, it should. It’s...

The final hour of “Twin Peaks: The Return” ended David Lynch’s series on a baffling, brilliant high by returning to the show’s most important figure: Laura Palmer. Dale Cooper went back to the past to stop Laura’s murder, but his attempt was corrupted by Judy, an “extreme negative force” who plucked Laura from the timeline we’re most familiar with and put her somewhere else entirely. Cooper ended up preventing Laura’s death, as her corpse on the beach from the pilot episode disappeared, but he didn’t save her. In fact, he only prevented her death in one timeline.

“Twin Peaks: The Return” came to an end after 16 indescribable hours with a mind-bending two-part finale that is bound to leave fans hunting for answers and drawing up theories for months to come. Whatever questions viewers had heading into Part 18 were thrown aside as Lynch ended his grand saga with a baffling trip to the past…or maybe the future…or maybe an alternate reality…and ended on a final image so terrifying and so tragic that it provided the most essential ending imaginable for the series.

Before I start my final Twin Peaks recap, let’s get one thing clear: I love Twin Peaks. And I loved this new season. And I loved the finale. I remember one hot June evening back in 1991 when the show suddenly ended on a dramatic cliffhanger and then was (seemingly) gone forever. And people hated that finale! It was so polarizing! And then we all turned against the movie. And yet…
Twenty-five years later, here we are, once again. The fans are divided. Twin Peaks has split them in two. People are either furious, or rapturous. And I am the latter.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series."Finally," says the One-Armed Man a.k.a. Phillip Gerard (Al Strobel) about midway through Part 16 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival, right after a certain FBI Special Agent returns to the world of the living. It's been 13 episodes since we've seen full trace of Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), though even then he wasn't entirely himself. (Being trapped for 25 years in the otherworldly Black Lodge has a way of tempering certain personality traits.) Now, however, he's "one hundred percent" (in his estimation, anyway), and there's certainly plenty of giddy pleasure to be had watching the energetic, Boy Scout-like Cooper of old take charge. But that presumes that this is the Dale Cooper of old, and it quickly becomes apparent that that's not the case.

As “Twin Peaks” starts nearing its end, David Lynch has been kind enough to start giving the series a little bit of closure when it comes to the familiar characters in the town. The central mystery, however, is more baffling than ever, and the most recent question on everyone’s mind is the fate of Special Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan).
In the last episode, Cooper is living his best Dougie life by digging into some chocolate cake when he catches on TV the portion of “Sunset Boulevard” that mentions Gordon Cole, which happens to be the same name as his old FBI Director pal, played by Lynch. Recognition spurs Cooper into action, and he sticks a fork into the electrical socket. Cut to outside of the house as the sounds of Dougie’s wife Janey-e (Naomi Watts) screaming within can be heard.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The best things come to those who wait, and Big Ed Hurley (Everett McGill) has long been dreaming of the moment that opens Part 15 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival. "I've been a selfish bitch to you all these years," says his one-eyed wife Nadine (Wendy Robie), who's walked a long way—a Dr. Jacoby/Dr. Amp gold, shit-digging shovel slung over her shoulder—to the cash-only Gas Farm that Ed has run for most of his life. She states the obvious: Ed is in love with Rr Diner propietor Norma Jennings (Peggy Lipton), and she, Nadine, has always stood in his way. Those days are finally over. Ed is reluctant to think of this as anything beyond another of his spouse's manic episodes.

Recently, Seth Meyers imagined what his NBC talk show might look like if it was set in The Red Room. Despite the opportunity for easy potshots at the preposterousness of “Twin Peaks,” the two-minute segment played it pretty straight.

“Twin Peaks” hasn’t exactly abounded in moments of tenderness these last few months, but the end of “Part 2” remains a highlight: “James is cool,” Shelly says of her old classmate James Hurley. “James was always cool.” Whether or not that’s actually true might not rank among the revival’s most hotly debated questions, but it’s one that actor James Marshall was kind enough to address in a recent Vulture interview: “I don’t think of myself that way or the character that way,” he admits.

Everything from the set design to the pacing and backwards dialogue is on point. The “Twin Peaks” homage was a nice break in a week dominated by serious discussions over President Trump and the pro-Nazi rallies in Charlottesville.

Victor Stone is no ordinary human being.
Much like his fellow Justice League members, Ray Fisher’s mechanized fighter is classed as a metahuman, and one of the few able to guard Earth against the invading Steppenwolf. Built in the bowels of the Red Room by his father, Dr. Silas Stone, Victor is fitted with experimental prosthetics when a horrible accident leaves him on the brink of death, leaving his old man with little choice but to engineer Victor into a human-cyborg hybrid.
That arc was briefly teased in last year’s Batman V Superman, though we’re now learning that Justice League will delve deeper into the troubled history of Victor and his madcap genius of a father. Chatting to Cbm, Joe Morton offered some insight into that father-son dynamic, including why Cyborg holds a grudge against Stone Senior for turning him into a machine.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.Much of David Lynch's work is about regression, or regressiveness, about people who are most comfortable when indulging (really, hiding behind) their baser instincts. An acid-jazz saxophonist with murder on his mind might take refuge in the body and soul of a teenage delinquent (Lost Highway), or a midwestern girl who has played and lost the Hollywood game might concoct a candy-colored dream-life in which she finally attains Tinseltown stardom (Mulholland Dr.). But these escapes always prove to be traps, and cyclical ones at that. What goes around comes around. What has happened before will happen again. Even Blue Velvet's Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), finally liberated from her abusive sexual relationship with Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), "still can see blue velvet through my tears.

It took 12 whole episodes, but Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) has finally returned to our television screens.
The Twin Peaks chat rooms, message boards and Twitter feeds have been speculating for years on end about where we would find her and how (Is she in Hollywood? Is she the mysterious billionaire in New York? Is she still in a coma? Was she horribly disfigured in the bank explosion? Is she now running One Eyed Jacks?). But I am fairly certain that no one saw this outcome, this development, this new Audrey.
At first I found it confusing and jarring: that weird guy is Audrey’s husband?...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.A study in contrasts. That's the best way to describe Part 11 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which opens with a brief moment of doom-laden calm—three young boys playing catch happening upon the bruised and beaten but very much alive Miriam Sullivan (Sarah Jean Long)—then details, for its first half, the many ways in which the titular town, as well as the few-states-over locale of Buckhorn, South Dakota, are coming unglued. But this is dramatic incident Lynch-style, which means that the narrative rhythms are always shifting (violently, unpredictably), as if someone was continually revving a car engine into the red, but never in a calculable way. There's madness in such extremity, as there's insanity in the blood-curdling scream...

You see it dance among the seas and stars. And glowing around the moon. But in these days, the glow is dying. What will be in the darkness that remains? The Truman brothers are both true men. What was only hinted at in the third episode of “Twin Peaks” became a full-blown surrealistic experience in Sunday’s avant-garde “Part 8.”
Despite the experimental filmmaking and very little dialogue, the 50-minute bombardment of sound and fury coalesced into an intriguing origin story that promised a lot more sense in the contemporary story to come. Giving historical context to some of the things we’ve seen so far anchors the story in a way that it hasn’t been before. But this wasn’t just the story of one birth, but of many. "I think I'm high!…I don't know where I am!" Jerry screams, perhaps speaking for a good subsection of the Twin Peaks revival audience, who have, over the six prior installments, been given only glimpses of a larger picture. Narrative momentum comes in asides; the more prevalent longueurs are reserved for atmosphere and mood, for full immersion in apparent stasis.Part 7 shakes things up, following the brotherly freak-out with several story reveals that come in quick succession. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor-Johnson reflects on shooting the 2015 erotic film, and the "uphill" battle she had with Fifty Shades author, E.L. James.

"Two different creative visions," Taylor-Johnson recalled of working with James, whose real name is Erika Mitchell. "Her vision versus mine, and they were polar opposite."
"Every scene was fought over. It was tough. It was like wading uphill through sticky tar," she explained. "Her thing was, 'This is what the fans expect.' I'd be like, 'Well, let's try and hit those marks but create a new universe at the same time.'"

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.A man walks into a bar—after cursing out Gene Kelly (because most of the time we don't feel like singin' in the rain). The bar, by the way, is named "Max Von's," surely after Erich von Stroheim's rabidly devoted butler Max von Mayerling from Sunset Blvd (1950). Of his employer, silent-film diva Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), Max once said, "Madame is the greatest star of them all." No more proper locale, then, for a star entrance: "Diane," says FBI forensics specialist Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) to a platinum blond beauty nursing martini and cigarette. Around turns Diane Evans, the heretofore unseen confidante of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), and played (of course, how could there be any doubt?) by Laura Dern.

There are marketing challenges, and then there is what Showtime faced in getting the word out about the “Twin Peaks” revival.
Reboots like “Twin Peaks” promote themselves to some degree, as fans eagerly await any tidbit of information about what has transpired in the years since their favorite show went off the air. But networks will generally have the ability to start teasing the reunion via photos, clips and other teases. With “Twin Peaks,” creator David Lynch kept a firm lid on anything appearing anywhere before the show’s actual premiere on Showtime.

But that wasn’t originally going to be the case. Don Buckley, Showtime’s chief marketing officer, told us Tuesday at the Variety TV Summit that he and his team had actually created a substantial marketing campaign featuring robust print and video materials from the show.

Carol Lynley (The Poseidon Adventure) was rumored to have the part back in 1991. And theories swirled over the years suggesting Agent Cooper’s trusty Gal Friday might just be a figment of his imagination. But in Sunday’s Twin Peaks, the one and only “Diane” was finally revealed to be none other than Laura Dern. (Nifty that she played his Girl Friday back in Blue Velvet too, huh?) A satisfying moment 27 years in the making (even if most of us guessed and hoped it was coming). Now, Albert (who found her in Max Von’s Bar in Philadelphia – did that...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

With a huge cast and 25 years intervening between the original “Twin Peaks” and “The Return” on Showtime, familiar faces may not be all that familiar anymore. Woo boy, Twin Peaks fans.
If you thought the first two hours of the Twin Peaks revival were weird, you haven't really seen anything yet.
Let's start with what is easily the David Lynch-iest sequence of the show so far.
The Purple Spaceship
After being expelled from the Black Lodge and taking a quick pit stop in the glass box in New York City, real Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) finds himself in a weird purple spaceship thing with a woman who is listed in the credits as Naido (Nae Yuuki). Her eyes are melted shut, which lends some weight to the idea that eyes are important in Twin Peaks -- Ruth Davenport (Mary Stofle) was missing an eye and it also appeared that Evil Cooper (MacLachlan) shot Phyllis Hastings (Cornelia Guest) through the eye.
The woman eventually disappears and Cooper encounters the shadowy head of Major Garland Briggs (Don S. Davis), who utters the phrase "blue rose...

There’s more than a few cast members from the original “Twin Peaks” who did not return for the latest batch of episodes that dropped late Sunday night. Some have retired from acting, while a number of others are memorialized in the episodes’ closing scrolls.
But there’s one non-holdover from the original “Twin Peaks” run that might indicate the biggest change in what the show has become: the opening credits bird.

When Showtime unveiled the first look at the opening credits, gone was the unassuming footage of a quiet Washington logging town, replaced by a more overtly ominous intro. While the updated opening credits prime the audience for an aggressively weirder spin on this otherworldly murder mystery, it loses some of the subtle punch and the humble, twisted-fairytale rhythms that used to kick off each installment.

Even if you recently re-watched the first two seasons of “Twin Peaks” through the magic of streaming, that doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily recognize everyone who’s come back for the Showtime revival.
Part of the problem is that there are a lot of people to keep track of. Though it’s a small town, it’s still a freakin’ town with a heathy population that thrives on that sweet mountain air. Even considering that some people end up dead, like Laura Palmer, that doesn’t necessarily preclude their return.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The world's gone mad. Fortunately for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), he's been able to sit out most of the real-life insanity of the last 25 years. Unfortunately—as surely known by those viewers familiar with Mark Frost and David Lynch's singular television series Twin Peaks, which returned Sunday, May 21st for a limited, 18-episode run on Showtime—that's because he's been trapped in the unearthly purgatory known as the Black Lodge, all while his devilish doppelgänger, a mortal manifestation of the murderous spirit known as Killer Bob, runs amok among mankind.Already it feels like I'm speaking in tongues. But if Twin Peaks and Lynch (who directed, co-wrote, co-edited, and designed the sound for all of these new episodes) have taught us anything,...

If you ever watched Twin Peaks‘ original run and thought, “Man, what this show really needs is an extended, highly disgusting vomit sequence,” then this week’s episode of the revival is your bile-soaked gift from the universe.
In just a moment, I’ll explain (in as little detail as possible) exactly what I mean. For now, suffice to say that regurgitation plays a big role in bringing Special Agent Dale Cooper back into our world, although whether he’s fully here — in body, mind and spirit — remains to be seen.

It’s no secret that David Lynch’s original “Twin Peaks” series has had a lot of impact on TV series creators and directors. And while his influence can be seen in the small-town themes, quirky characters, striking visuals and sweeping, cinematic shots that are common today, some TV shows haven’t made their love known in oblique ways. Instead, they’ve paid direct homage through references and spoofs.

The latest batch of marketing goodies includes four new photos from the series, including a glimpse at Kyle MacLachlan as Special Agent Dale Cooper, back in that damn Red Room again, plus exterior shots of some beloved Twin Peaks locales.
It’s a less sexy, but much more forthright look at the series than other previous glimpses of the series have provided — including plenty of short teasers, a video puzzle, and even pie-hawking billboards — but by now, fans are pretty primed to devour any and all looks at the revived series. Elle Magazine recently sat down with Chris Evans and discussed a number of topics. From politics, sports, and dating, the interview covered the gamut of information you would expect. (It also includes a shirtless photo of Mr. Evans with whip cream on his chest. Sometimes there's not enough a person can do to forget an image.) One tidbit of information the interview gave was his comments on a potential Black Widow movie.
"That's a good question. It would really just clean up, wouldn't it? Scarlett [Johansson] is so good at everything she does. She's played such a crucial part in the other films. She always makes her presence so felt—even when there are 50 different superheroes running around onscreen. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens at some point in the future. I'm sure Scarlett would be open to it."

After the involvement of 217 actors bringing to life over 400 pages of script across a 142-day shoot, we are now less than two months away from the return of David Lynch‘s Twin Peaks.
