“Consent,” an adaptation of Vanessa Springora’s bestselling book which sparked a belated #MeToo moment in France, has lured major distributors while thriving at the local box office and stirring social media buzz.

Represented in international markets by Paris-based outfit Snd, the film marks the sophomore outing of Vanessa Filho whose debut feature “Angel Face” stars Marion Cotillard and played at the Cannes Film Festival.

Inspired by Springora’s real-life story, “Consent” tells the story of a teenage girl who is manipulated and sexually abused by a celebrated writer in his 50s. Although Springora doesn’t name him in her book, “Le Consentement,” the story revolves around Gabriel Matzneff, the renowned author of “Under 16 Years Old,” among his many books promoting sex with minors.

Published in January 2020, “Le Consentement” sent shockwaves in France where it sold more than 300,000 copies and went on to be released in 30 countries across the globe.

2023 box office takings are still on track to surpass last year’s figures.

The French box office continued its autumn dip in October with 13.86 million tickets sold, down 3.9% from October 2022.

However, an impressive final week of admissions in the month and a strong line-up of films set for release in November and December mean that France’s total 2023 box office should surpass last year’s takings.

The October box office came in at €99.8m, based on an average ticket price of €7.20. This is 26.1% below the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average.

The festival’s 27th edition runs Nov. 3-19, while the festival’s industry platform, Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, will run from Nov. 13-17.

The Grand Prix for the Best Film, with a 20,000 Euros cash prize, will be bestowed by Tallinn City Council.

Joshua Oppenheimer’s upcoming musical The End starring Tilda Swinton is one of 23 features to receive a share of €5.5m ($6.1m) in the latest round of Eurimages co-production support funding.

The film, a co-production between Denmark, Germany and Ireland, receives €480,000 – the largest of the 23 awards in this selection.

A few weeks shy of her 100th birthday, Betty White, the beloved actress and comedian whose career in Hollywood spanned nearly eight decades and included stints on hit shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Golden Girls, has died. She was 99.

White died at her home in California on Friday, Dec. 31. A representative for the Los Angeles Fire Department told Rolling Stone: “We responded to a medical aid request. The call was received at 9:33 a.m. We have determined death of an approximately 99-year-old female.”

Multiple Emmy Award-winning actress and animal rights activist Betty White, who most famously starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, has died, just days short of her 100th birthday. White passed peacefully Thursday night at her home, her agent Jeff Witjas confirmed to Deadline.

“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.”

It shouldn’t be shocking that a Ryan Murphy show is able to attract a noteworthy cast, but the TV titan’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”-inspired Netflix series “Ratched” has assembled quite a few surprising stars.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Murphy announced that Cynthia Nixon, Sharon Stone, and Corey Stoll would be the latest performers to join his ever-evolving acting troupe, joining a cast that already includes the previously announced Sarah Paulson, who’ll be playing the title nurse.

This will be the first high-profile role for Nixon following her bid last year to become governor of New York. The most prolific showrunner in Hollywood is never at a loss for ideas, and Ryan Murphy’s newly-inked Netflix deal has birthed one of his boldest yet. In a new profile by The New Yorker‘s Emily Nussbaum, Murphy revealed he has been mulling an anthology series inspired by #MeToo. Tentatively titled “Consent,” the series would operate like “Black Mirror,” with a different creator and story each episode. Topics covered would include an “insidery account of The Weinstein Company,” Kevin Spacey, and “an ambiguous he-said-she-said encounter.”
