If you live on the East Coast, then you might be familiar with the story of the Jersey Devil, and you may also be looking forward to Scared in Jersey, the annual celebration of Halloween and the deadly local legend that debuts for a month of mayhem this October:

Press Release: This October, the legend of the Jersey Devil comes to life with the debut of Scared In Jersey, the Northeast's premier Halloween event, taking place every Thursday through Sunday throughout the month, plus Halloween night, at the Pnc Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ (dates listed below).

The multi-attraction event, presented by Live Nation, is the brainchild of industry veterans Artist Group International, SRae Productions and Blood Drums by Street Drum Corps. Scared In Jersey features such attractions as the Pine Barren Maze, Mother Leeds' Haunted Cottage, The Devil's Midway and multiple live performances from Blood Drums nightly. According to Variety, Ice-t has signed on to appear in Clinton Road, a horror movie that—to the best our knowledge—is not about the terrible things that can happen when you have secret emails or whatever. At the risk of making all Republican senators lose interest in the film, Clinton Road is actually about a “notorious” road that cuts through New Jersey’s Pine Barrens and is the basis for a lot of spooky urban legends and paranormal sightings. Naturally, the movie centers around a group of teenagers who decide to investigate the road, only to find themselves “scrambling against a sadistic satanic cult.”

Ice-t is a little too old to play a teenager and lacks the wings to needed to play the Jersey Devil, so he’ll be filling in the classic horror archetype of the weird local guy who knows about all of the scary things and...

I’m going to come out and say it, Sleepy Hollow faithful, and you can holler if you hear me: I don’t care about Pandora’s origin story.

So the fact that this week’s episode spends so much time establishing Mrs. Hidden One’s backstory is a bit of a bummer, especially because the hour also includes a real breakthrough in the Witnesses’ relationship. Wouldn’t it have been cool if the show have devoted more time to exploring Abbie’s important revelation?

Eric D. Wilkinson, aspiring screenwriter and fervid Die Hard fan, spent thousands of dollars to send an open letter to Bruce Willis in a full-page Hollywood Reporter ad last month, pitching his idea for a Die Hard sequel. No surprise, Wilkinson's idea for a Die Hard sequel isn't gonna happen; very surprisingly, he did get a deal to write a different movie. According to The Guardian:Wilkinson and his writing partner Richard Schenkman have since agreed a deal with La-based Eclectic Pictures, which has a first-look arrangement with Lerner’s Millennium Films. The company has now optioned their high-concept screenplay The Devil, about the mythical flying creature said to have terrorised residents of southern New Jersey for centuries, for an unspecified sum. Eric D Wilkinson’s plea to write revival of action franchise was unsuccessful – but his horror script about the mythical Jersey Devil is optioned by Eclectic Pictures

A Los Angeles screenwriter who took out a full-page advert in a film industry magazine to pitch his idea to revive the Die Hard franchise has been rewarded with a Hollywood deal.

Fan Eric D Wilkinson, a producer and writer of independent movies, spent thousands of dollars from his savings to take out the Hollywood Reporter ad, which took the form of an open letter to star Bruce Willis, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and director Len Wiseman. The move came after news broke that plans for a new instalment in the long-running action saga could feature 60-year-old Bruce Willis alongside a younger actor, both playing versions of battling the New York cop John McClane.

Oh, how things can change in a month. Last month a mostly unknown screenwriter named Eric D. Wilkinson spent money he probably didn.t have to take out a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter. The ad was actually a movie pitch. He was trying to get the attention of the people behind the potential Die Hard prequel, because he had an idea he thought would work. I'm sure you've heard of cryptid creatures like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil and the Mothman, but over in Maryland there's a mythical beast that you may not be familiar with. Meet the Snallygaster; a creature that's perhaps more frightening than all of the aforementioned ones combined.

Per Wikipedia, the Snallygaster was first spotted by German immigrants way back in the 1730s, in the Maryland counties of Washington and Frederick. Oftentimes described as a reptilian/bird-like creature with massive wings, a single eyeball and giant tentacles, the creature was believed to prowl the skies on the hunt for human victims, plucking them up from the ground, bringing them high up to the hills surrounding the counties and feeding on their blood.

Sightings of the monstrous Snallygaster continued through the 1900s, and U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt reportedly considered taking matters into his own hands and hunting down the beast.

When I sat down to watch Devil in the Woods I suddenly had a case of déjà vu because I’ve seen this movie before. I’m confused as to why The Barrens has been released as Devil in the Woods, probably the most confusing part is I’d watched it on VOD as The Barrens in the UK. It’s only a small detail anyway, as Devil in the Woods (as I will call it for this review) is a film worth seeing.

We start with a foundation challenge with guest judge Howard Berger. The contestants are paired up randomly to create an army of orcs. Literally. Each team chooses a banner, then must create a “lead” orc and nine of his warrior brethren. And they only have two and a half hours to do it. Matt and Corinne are the winning team, but only one gets immunity, and that is Corinne.

For the spotlight challenge, the contestants are again paired up, but they get to choose their own partner. There are five sets of geographic coordinates. Once each team chooses, the coordinates reveal a location that a cryptid is said to live in. The teams must create their version of said cryptid. Doug Jones is the guest judge.

As we’ve seen here in the first few weeks of 2014, the landscape of the horror genre is absolutely flooded with found footage movies, and we primarily have two movies to thank/blame for that; The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.

While 1999’s Blair Witch Project is often credited as the first horror movie made in the Pov found footage style, such a claim is actually quite untrue. Though Blair Witch is no doubt the movie that popularized the style, and Paranormal Activity the one that re-invented it and brought it into a new decade, there were actually a handful of found footage films that came out well before the horrifying tale of the witch in the woods.

The mystery monster known as the Chupacabra, or “goat-sucker,” has been a staple of urban legend throughout the Americas for decades, and the stories of its alleged existence have inspired campfire tales, books, songs, movies, Halloween costumes and more, placing it alongside fellow cryptids Sasquatch, the Mothman and the Jersey Devil. Just like those creatures, the Chupacabra has managed to elude scientific proof, but wildlife expert Dr. Phyliss Canyon claims to have found the real deal. Since 2005, Canyon had been unable to find the mysterious predator behind the mass killings of chickens on her ranch in the East Texas town of Cuero. The Jersey Devil is one of the scariest American paranormal tales. The Seen and The Unseen drove through the Pine Barrens of Jersey, the Devil’s supposed hangout, last summer; and let us tell you, it lives up to its creepy reputation.

Imagine our surprise when we see this article from The Examiner, telling us the Jersey Devil was spotted in Oklahoma.

Turns out, the headline is just a Tad misleading. The photograph (shown here) is of a hairless creature climbing over a fence. It showed up on Reddit and the conversation exploded. People began to speculate it was a picture of the Jersey Devil. Further investigation showed the picture is actually a hairless squirrel in Oklahoma.

Suspicious, the Crack Dread Central News Department (trademark pending) contacted the press agent for The Jersey Devil. The agent released this statement: “The investigation of this photo showed it was a hairless squirrel.

For the last interview in our short film series for Indie Horror Month 2013, Dread Central chatted with writer/director Erik Gardner about his latest project Blue Hole, which has found much success on the festival circuit since its premiere at the 2012 Shriekfest Film Festival last October.

Based on a true New Jersey urban legend, Blue Hole follows Michael (Drew Wick) and his intended fiancée Amy (Caitlin Rose Williams) who travel deep within the Pine Barrens of New Jersey to a vacation cabin where he plans to propose to her. Upon arriving they’re attacked by a madman who claims an eerie pond near the cabin called “Blue Hole” can bring back the dead and soon, reality mixes with illusion as the lovers are left to try to figure out if Blue Hole is real or if the madman controlling their fates is truly insane.

I’ve been holding out hope that someone with a knack for horror would deliver a solid genre flick centered around the Jersey Devil. I’m beginning to think such a request simply too much to ask. Writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman’s 2012 misfire “The Barrens” takes the legend and tries to do something artsy with it. Does the creature actually exist, or is it all inside the mind of a father who is slowly losing his grip on reality? After an hour and 20 minutes of noodling around in the woods, Bousman goes for a shock ending that, honestly, most people will see coming a mile away. Is it too much to ask for a little more Jersey Devil in a Jersey Devil movie?

That's the question I kept asking myself throughout this disappointing film. Part of the problem here is the film's structure does not leave the viewer much to remain interested in as things slowly, and I do mean slowly, unfold. Darren Lynn Bousman’s take on the popular Jersey Devil mythos, The Barrens stars True Blood hunk Stephen Moyer as a father protecting his family from the beast. Or is he? Maybe he is the beast. Does it matter? If you’re a True Blood fan, I sold you on Moyer, so, go see for yourself! Moyer, who also produced the flick, seems to be dipping back and forth between his English accent and some kind of Pennsylvania twang. It’s not Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves-level bad, it’s just strange. The character he’s playing is English, but his accent is all over the place.

Writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman isn't one to sit still for very long; after helming three successful Saw sequels from 2004 to 2007, he's gone on to direct a string of genre flicks, and his latest thriller, The Barrens, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay Films.

Recently Dread Central caught up with the ever-busy Bousman on the phone to chat about his Jersey Devil-inspired project that stars Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner and Shawn Ashmore. During our interview we heard more from him on his experiences making the film, his thoughts on collaborating with Moyer and how he pushed the "True Blood" star to his limits, and much more.

Dread Central: I really enjoyed the fact that The Barrens wasn't exactly the "Jersey Devil" movie you think it's going to be; can you discuss why you decided...

Director / Writer Darren Lynn Bousman made a name for himself in the horror genre by taking on the difficult task of making the first three Saw sequels. He went on to helm cult favorite gothic musical Repo! The Genetic Opera. It's been a non-stop road of work for Bousman since then. He's directed four films since then. I had an opportunity to interview Bousman about his latest film, The Barrens, which is available on Blu-ray and DVD now.

You're constantly working and it seems like you never take a break. How in the world did you find time to make "The Barrens" while running all over the country promoting "The Devil's Carnival?"

It's not easy... but it's a helluva lot better than the alternative. I am not stupid. I am well aware this could all go away tomorrow. Filmmakers are a dime a dozen. Who was cool yesterday is irrelevant today.

I hate when I put a movie in I was excited to see and it fails to meet my expectations. That's exactly how I felt when the credits rolled on Darren Lynn Bousman's The Barrens. This is the perfect example of a film whose beginning and end shine but the middle just drags on for too long. After seeing what Bousman did with Mother's Day, I really expected more from his next outing.

Richard Vineyard (Stephen Moyer) needs a little time off from his busy life and the trappings of modern civilization. He takes his family on a camping trip to the pine forests of New Jersey called the Barrens. His father used to take him there as a boy. Richard wants to honor his father's wishes by scattering his ashes throughout the area. Upon arriving at their campsite, they are bombarded with stories about a creature spawned from Satan named the Jersey Devil.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has released The Barrens on Blu-ray and DVD, the latest from director Darren Lynn Bousman. True Blood's Stephen Moyer stars as a father who takes his family camping in the southern New Jersey woods, only to find the mythical Jersey Devil still roaming the landscape. If you live in New Jersey, then you grow up your entire life with the stink of the Jersey Devil on your skin. It’s “our” urban legend. It’s our hockey team. It fascinates children and has always kept me just a little curious as to what really sparked the whole myth to inferno levels.
