Tyler Perry does it all. And the writer/ director/ producer/ actor is about to do it all again for his new film "Good Deeds."
The romantic drama centers around Glen Deeds, a successful entrepreneur who's about to get married when he suddenly finds himself more interested in a down-on-her-luck single mother than his uptown fiancée.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Perry, who penned the script, will also direct and star as Glen.
With shooting slated to start at the end of April in Atlanta, there's still no word yet on what lucky lady will capture Perry's heart.
But that isn't all Perry's up to — he's also been tapped to play the detective Alex Cross in the mystery thriller "I, Alex Cross," based on the national bestseller by James Patterson.
In the meantime, Perry's latest comedy, "Madea's Big Happy Family" is scheduled to open nationwide on April 22.

Though Tyler Perry has yet another one of his Madea movies hitting theaters on April 22, the multi-hyphenate and genuine cultural phenomenon has also been inching a little closer to the mainstream over the last few years. There was his quick appearance in Star Trek, his backing of Oscar nominee Precious, and last fall's For Colored Girls, which wasn't exactly a hit but was presented with distinctly different marketing than his usual comedic fare. Now he's set to play the lead role in the detective film I, Alex Cross, but in the meantime he's also prepping his next film, which looks like it will fall somewhere between Madea's Big Happy Family and Star Trek on the mainstream success scale. Talking to Black Film at Cinema Con last week, Perry said his next film will be Good Deeds, a romantic comedy that he will direct, produce and star in, though not as...

I am not even remotely the audience for Tyler Perry's movies, but I admire the man. With two successful television series (Meet the Browns and House of Payne) on the air, Perry regularly churns out 1-2 feature films a year that debut to astoundingly consistent commercial results. Before he takes a brief detour to play detective Alex Cross for director Rob Cohen later this year, the auteur in Perry will direct and star in Good Deeds based on his own original screenplay. THR reports Perry will play Glen Deeds in the romantic drama about "a successful entrepreneur who's about to get married when he suddenly finds himself more interested in a down-on-her-luck single mother than his uptown fiance." As far as I can tell, the role will not require Perry as a woman and/or in a fat suit. Filming will begin at the end of April in Atlanta under Perry's studio home Lionsgate.

Tyler Perry's monogamous relationship with Lionsgate will be interrupted this year when he stars in I, Alex Cross for Summit Entertainment. But Perry and Lionsgate have renewed their vows with a new multi-year deal that will see him continue as the indie's franchise figure for years to come. Lionsgate has extended its first-look partnership with Perry and his 34th Street Films banner for films and DVD. That continues a lucrative relationship that began with the 2005 hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman and continued with a series of hits that Perry writes, directs, produces, stars in, and owns. The extension comes as Perry receives the Visionary Award for film making at CinemaCon tonight. Lionsgate will continue to distribute Perry's films--Madea's Big Happy Family and the Perry-produced We The Peeples are in the can--and the agreement covers future projects that include two more revolving around Perry's matriarch Madea character.

It's been a depressing few months at the box office, but April hopes to be the month that finally turns things around. First off, there will be significantly more nationwide releases than April 2010 (16 versus 12). It's also the first month in 2011 that has a healthy supply of would-be blockbusters, including sequels like Fast Five and Scream 4 and accessible family fare like Rio and Hop. Still, last April was by-far the highest-grossing on record with $752.6 million, so another down month could be in the offing.April 1Hop, Source Code and Insidious aim to kick things off on a strong note this weekend. From Illumination Entertainment, the company behind Despicable Me, Hop is the latest entry in the increasingly tired CGI star genre. The movie essentially looks like Alvin and the Chipmunks with a holiday angle, two factors which should work in its favor. Even if the movie doesn't open hugely, it...

Some celebrities are so recognizable, so iconic, they only require one name: Oprah. Bono. Madonna. Prince. Cher. Beck. Beyonce. It was only a matter of time before two of today's biggest singularly-named phenomenons joined forces to become one unstoppable force: Madea and Snooki.

We thought global warming was heating up the planet, but really it's Hollywood. They're making it summer all year long. The first weekend of May is generally considered the beginning of the summer movie season but, as those three months got more and more crowded, that date slowly crept into late April. Now, 2011 changes that like never before. So many potential blockbusters staked their claim on prime May, June and July 2011 release dates, in some cases, years in advance, Hollywood was forced to change its thinking more than usual. For the next two months, each and every weekend has at least one or two films that, in the past, would have easily been considered summer blockbusters and it all begins this Friday, March 4. So, is it crazy to say that the summer of 2011 begins in March? We don't think so. Look at the list of films opening between this week...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Note bene: Those fools over at the JoBlo Movie Show Podcast decided it would be a good idea if I hung out for the night to talk about movies.

If you'd never seen a Tyler Perry film, and the only thing you knew about Tyler Perry was what you read here on Pajiba, you'd probably be disappointed in what you saw. You'd be disappointed because you didn't explode during the screening or walk out with a head full of flames. Tyler Perry's films are bad, and they highlight the worst of African-American stereotypes, but there are worse films. To be honest, even among so-called "urban" films, I'd rather watch a Tyler Perry film than movies like The Cookout, First Sunday, The Lottery Ticket, or almost anything that features supporting roles by Keith David, Tommy Davidson, Katt Williams, or Eddie Griffin. Now, Eddie Griffin -- that guy makes some seriously shitty films. In fact, as bad as Tyler Perry's movies might be, the experience can often be uplifting -- not because of the movie itself, but because of his audience,...

I mentioned in my weekly DVD/Blu-ray column that one of these days I am going to do a marathon reviewing session of Tyler Perry's films since I haven't seen a single one of them yet. One commenter suggested I work on it now as Perry's next film Madea's Big Happy Family hits theaters on April 22.
I'm not quite sure I'm up for it just yet, but promotion on the new Perry-dressed-in-drag feature has started as Lionsgate debuted the trailer just today and I have added the latest batch of Madea posters to the site.
This isn't the first time Perry has mimicked a classic movie poster such as the Straw Dogs nod in the I Can Do Bad All by Myself poster. This time around he tackles The Godfather as well as a trio of this year's Oscar Best Picture nominees Black Swan, The King's Speech and True Grit.

The attention-getting and totally goofy teaser poster that had Tyler Perry in Madea drag and Black Swan makeup had me worrying that the first trailer for the latest Madea movie would be a similar kind of parody. Madea dancing the black swan? Madea being seduced by Vincent Cassel, when it's supposed to be the other way around? The possibilities were endless, and all vaguely horrifying. Rest assured, that's not what we're seeing with the new teaser trailer for Madea's Big Happy Family, which debuted today at Apple. Instead it's some weird hybrid of a follow-the-bouncing-ball sing-along and a remix, with Maury Povich thrown in-- your guess is as good as mine on that one. After last week's report featured no major titles, the Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration was back this week with a lengthy list of new ratings for movies like Red Riding Hood, Larry Crowne and The Lincoln Lawyer. This rating reaffirmed that the movie will be geared more towards the Twilight audience and less towards creature feature fans. With a cast headlined by Amanda Seyfried, Red Riding Hood opens March 11 opposite Battle: Los Angeles and Mars Needs Moms. Despite all my efforts and communal trumpeting, not a single one of the colored girls from For Colored Girls was nominated for an Academy Award. I really kind of had high hopes for them, until I saw every other movie that came out from pretty much September onward. So Tyler Perry will do what he does best -- ruin other franchises, anger the gods of snow and storm, and make more Madea movies.
The latest Madea film is actually based on one of Tyler Perry's original plays, Madea's Big Happy Family -- you know the ones that they used to run ads for on my local Philadelphia channels back in the day. Perry actually released a video version of the stage production last year, but now he's gonna make a movie. At least Loretta Devine will get some much deserved work. And so will Shad "Lil Bow Wow" Moss.

Lionsgate has continued ripping off the posters of the Best Picture Oscar nominees in its effort to promote "Madea's Big Happy Family". Through Cinematical, the studio unleashed its latest take on "True Grit and "The King's Speech", putting Tyler Perry's Madea as the center of attention.
The spoof one-sheet for the Coen brothers-directed Western film turns the title to "True Grits" and features Madea holding on a gun. Meanwhile, the Tom Hooper-directed historical drama gets retitled into "The Queen's Speech" in the other Madea-fied poster. Offering something even more special, the latter poster gives a taste of Madea if being clicked on.
Last month, Lionsgate has shared two other parody posters. One that came out in mid-January spoofed "The Godfather" one-sheet, retitling it to "The Godmother". Another one which was released in late January delivers it takes on Natalie Portman-starring "Black Swan", dubbing Madea as "The Real...

Set to be released on April 22, the marketing angle for Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family has been fairly simple - take great movies, both from the past and last year, and bastardize them to his own needs. We've already seen him sully the names of both The Godfather and Black Swan, and now the hurricane of awfulness is continuing down the road. Cinematical has posted two new posters from Perry's next film, one taking on the Coen brothers' True Grit, the other Tom Hooper's The King's Speech. The question I have is if even Tyler Perry fans find this funny? How is this level of dumb any better than what Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg pump out every couple of years, which is considered some of the worst dreck that modern cinemas have had to endure? And why have they decided to steal a line from Rush Hour?...

Insanely funny "True Grits" and "The Queen's Speech" posters have been added from the Tyler Perry film group to which we recently added The Real Black Swan poster as well as The Godmother. Excellent poster marketing from the Big Happy Family comedy, which will definitely win a few more fans. Madea, everyone’s favorite wise-cracking, take-no-prisoners grandma, jumps into action when her niece, Shirley, receives distressing news about her health. All Shirley wants is to gather her three adult children around her and share the news as a family. But Tammy, Kimberly and Byron are too distracted by their own problems: Tammy can’t manage her unruly children or her broken marriage...

In one of of the more creative (and hilarious) ad campaigns we've seen so far this year, Tyler Perry's upcoming film 'Madea's Big Happy Family' has been releasing these spoof posters that place Perry's Madea character inside the posters for some of the Best Picture Oscar nominees. So far we've seen one for 'Black Swan' (retitled 'The Real Black Swan'), and now Cinematical is happy to exclusively premiere two more.
After the jump, scope out two new one-sheets that inject a little bit of Madea into the posters for 'True Grit' and 'The King's Speech' (retitled 'True Grits' and 'The Queen's Speech'). Furthermore, if you click on 'The Queen's Speech''s spoof poster, you'll get a little taste of Perry's Madea character doing what she does best (and keep clicking to hear more).

Never has one movie inspired more men to put on makeup and tights: see Johnny Knoxville at the Critics' Choice Awards and Jim Carrey on SNL, below. And here's the latest incarnation, The Real Black Swan: Lionsgate used Madea to promote Tyler Perry's latest, Madea's Big Happy Family (April 22). Let's hope Anne Hathaway and James Franco do better on Oscar night. They are rehearsing now. 127 Hours Oscar nominee Franco was late to Oscar co-host rehearsals on Saturday because his driver missed the plane from NY to La. Franco booked himself a replacement flight, sleeping on the plane. He's easygoing and professional, according to one observer of the rehearsals. Franco was reading Shakespeare the whole day when he wasn't acting. Then his manager for ...

While sequels The Hangover Part II and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked are likely to put up big numbers, it's tough to get a read on the rest of 2011's comedy slate. Because of their general lack of foreign appeal (the top five comedies in 2010 made just 38 percent of their worldwide total overseas, compared to 61 percent among the top five overall), studios err on the side of cheaper productions, and cheaper productions don't demand publicity a year in advance. Regardless, comedy remains a popular genre, and there's no shortage of box office contenders in 2011. Even outside of the comedy genre, The Hangover Part II (May 26) is one of the safest bets in 2011. The first movie was a surprise blockbuster, earning a massive $277.3 million during the summer of 2009. Instead of returning to Las Vegas, the sequel transplants the main characters to Thailand, where they will inevitably find themselves in all sorts of trouble.

Good news: Isaiah Mustafa is back with another Old Spice viral video! Bad news: The luster has completely worn off. Like, down to the nub. Alas. On the bright side, though, perhaps this latest bit of shirtless enunciation sheds some light on what to expect from Mustafa's co-starring role in Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family. Or, not. Click ahead to watch the man your man could smell like discuss his upcoming set of Old Spice advertisements. Super Bowl, anyone?...

Submarine is easily one of my most anticipated films of 2011. I think Richard Ayoade is about the funniest Brit I know, and it warms my heart to see that translate into favorable reviews from the Tiff and Sundance, not to mention a distribution deal in place with The Weinstein Company. The studio released a new poster which is alluring simple. On the flip side, this article also features posters for two films I will never see on purpose. The one-sheet for Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family is an admittedly interesting play on The Godfather, while the poster for The Chaperone -- starring professional wrestler Paul "Triple H" Levesque -- is endearingly silly. Hit the jump to see all three posters. Submarine opens in the UK March 18. There's no release date set for the U.S. yet, but expect the film later in 2011. Check out the Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family Poster which is cleverly designed as a classic we all know - The Godfather. Except this time around, it's hilariously made "The Godmother." The Lionsgate comedy/drama opens on April 22nd and is helmed and written by Tyler Perry who produces alongside longtime collaborator Reuben Cannon as well as Robert M. Bobb. Madea, everyone’s favorite wise-cracking, take-no-prisoners grandma, jumps into action when her niece, Shirley, receives distressing news about her health. All Shirley wants is to gather her three adult children around her and share the news as a family. But Tammy, Kimberly and Byron are too distracted by their own problems...

Like him or not, Tyler Perry is a phenom to his audience, having amassed half a billion dollar in the box office, not counting his success in the stage circuit. Yet he is not without his fair share of detractors—from prominent African-Americans offended by Perry's stereotyping to film critics offended by Perry's aptitude.
Recently, Lionsgate released Perry's most successful films on Blu-ray, so we thought it'd be the perfect opportunity to reassess five entries from Tyler Perry's filmography, as well as the stage version of Madea's Big Happy Family, which Perry is already adapting into a film.

Moviemaker Tyler Perry has given an 88-year-old grandmother a Christmas to remember after paying for her to rent a home for a year after she was the victim of a blaze last week, on December 21. Rosa Lee Ransby and her four-year-old great-granddaughter lost everything in the fire, but generous Perry has stepped up to find her a new rented place, which he'll pay for while her home is being rebuilt in Coweta County, Georgia.
The filmmaker has also offered to cover the cost of the utility bills and buy her furniture. Ransby moved into her temporary home on Thursday, December 23, according to People.com.
Tyler Perry has completed "Madea's Big Happy Family" based on his play of the same name. In the movie, he serves as a director, writer, producer in addition to tackling a role.

Every one of us is expendable-ah! Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. Anyway, as you can see, a line has clearly been drawn this week with the two biggest releases, The Expendables and Eat Pray Love, catering very heavily to male and female demographics respectively. Other noteworthy new discs include The Winning Season starring Sam Rockwell, Rob Reiner's Flipped, Joaquin Phoenix mock doc I'm Still Here, and, from the visionary director of Catwoman, Fire And Ice: The Dragon Chronicles! If that's not enough to keep you occupied, we've also got the nuclear arms documentary Countdown to Zero, the newly restored cut of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, and pretty much all of Tyler Perry's complete filmography on Blu-ray! What will you be buying or renting this week? The Expendables [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Eat Pray Love [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Flipped [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) The Winning Season [7] The Disappearance of Alice Creed...
