Justin Janowitz’s spellbinding feature debut, Do Not Watch, follows the tradition of cursed footage like 2018’s Antrum or 2022’s Incantation. Subliminal messages are baked into Ryan Toyama’s screenplay and imprinted onto the screen. Traditional barriers between screens and their audiences are shattered; characters plead with us to do what the title commends. Do Not Watch isn’t without shortcomings, but tantalizes as an innovative reinvention of found footage capabilities.

Toyama’s screenplay bounces between multiple timelines infected by the same film canister. An introductory info dump reads: “What you are about to witness is a compilation of the events surrounding the disappearance of a post-production crew as they worked on research footage from the 1980s.” Clips cycle around the mentioned post-production crew who works at Illusion Post, the supposed cursed footage of researchers in a bunker from the ‘80s, and the documentarians trying to unearth the truth about...

The Unnamed Footage Festival has announced the first wave of films for this year’s 7th edition of the Found Footage Horror, First Person Pov, and Faux Doc film festival.

The team previews, “Every year, our programmers scour the globe for the greatest, weirdest, and most obscure films in the In-World camera genre, and this year is shaping up to be our best and biggest year yet, complete with cryptids, liminal horror, possession and live streaming.

“UFF7 will feature two nights of pre-fest events. On Tuesday March 26th, Uff will present a 10th Anniversary screening of As Above So Below at Terror Tuesday in collaboration with the Alamo Drafthouse at their New Mission location. Wednesday March 27th will be our first ever badgeholder-only pre-festival event & mixer at the Artists’ Television Access in the Mission district, with details to be announced soon.

Synopsis:

The film chronicles the appearance of a mysterious documentary loaded onto a charred hard drive with a label warning ‘Do Not Watch.’ It reveals a filmmaker’s pursuit into the disappearance of demonic found footage and the fates of those investigating it. Obsession and curiosity drive unsuspecting filmmakers to unleash an horrific force that threatens to destroy their sanity and ultimately their lives.

With a quick post-production turnaround, Do Not Watch is slated for a late summer/early fall 2013 release.
