HBO and Netflix have had an up-and-down relationship over the years. HBO was okay with licensing some of their original shows to the streamer but obviously wanted to keep some bigger ones on HBO itself. The coming of Max means HBO doesn’t need Netflix as much.

2023 saw a new deal premiering several HBO shows on Netflix, but it looks like that agreement is coming to an end. There is a chance it could be renewed, so some of these stay after all, which is common for streamers. Director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan are ready to enter the supernatural realm with their latest feature-length collaboration, Sinners. The upcoming Warner Bros. blockbuster gets its official rating, one not associated with a Coogler movie since his first joint venture with his Black Panther franchise teammate.

According to FilmRatings.com,Sinners landed an R-rating heading into its spring release for strong bloody violence and sexual content. This marks new ground for Coogler as Sinners is his first R-rated film since 2013's Fruitvale Station, his critically acclaimed first project alongside Jordan.

Warner Bros. is banking on Coogler and Jordan's partnership to bear fruit again, considering the success of their previous work. Arielle Kebbel, Joshua Bassett, Sophie Skelton, and Sammy Dell have joined the cast of I Can Only Imagine 2, the sequel to the 2018 faith-based film from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company. They will star alongside Milo Ventimiglia and returning cast members John Finley, Trace Adkins, and Dennis Quaid. Production is set to begin in April in Nashville.

The film continues the story of Bart Millard, played by Finley, the lead singer of the Christian band MercyMe. Kebbel will portray Hilary Timmons, the wife of Ventimiglia’s Tim Timmons. Bassett has been cast as Bart’s brother-in-law Christopher, while Skelton will take over the role of Bart’s wife, Shannon. Dell, making his theatrical debut, will play Bart’s son, Sam.

Directors Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle will helm the film, with McCorkle also writing the screenplay. The producing team includes Kevin Downes, Andrew Erwin, Cindy Bond, Bart Millard, Daryl Lefever, and Joshua Walsh.

Exclusive: NBC’s Suits LA will welcome Rick Hoffman later this season, reprising the role of Louis Litt he originated in the mothership series, USA Network’s Suits. Sources close to production confirm he will appear in one episode this season with the potential to return for more if NBC picks up the Aaron Korsh-created legal drama for a second season.

Hoffman is the second actor from Suits to return to the universe following Gabriel Macht, who will appear in three episodes this season. Litt and Macht’s Harvey Spector will not coincide in any episodes, we hear.

What We Learned Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth, who is also the president of this CBS/NAACP production, teased what viewers will get to see. She hinted at “plenty of love triangles, plenty of people you love, love to hate” and added that “it’s really juicy.” When Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree) and Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree) give Giles the set tour, they take the correspondent to Orphey Gene’s, the diner that’s the gathering place “for everybody in every economic bracket in the show” goes to.

During the vibrant Red Sea Film Festival, actor Omar Miller discussed his experience in Gabriele Salvatores’ new film, “Naples to New York.” This historical drama, influenced by Federico Fellini’s early work, follows the story of two children who become stowaways on a ship bound for America in 1949 and embark on a transformational adventure.

Miller portrays George, an American cook who becomes an important part of the children’s journey. What distinguishes this film is its unique genesis; it is based on a narrative written by Fellini and his partner, Tullio Pinelli, in the 1940s, long before Fellini rose to international prominence as a filmmaker.

“This is one of the few times as an actor where you sign up for one film and end up making another film, but that other film is better than the film you thought you signed up for,” Miller said during an interview at the Deadline Studio in Jeddah.

The Weymouth, Massachusetts native and Upright Citizens Brigade alum was the co-creator EP, writer and star of Adult Swim’s long-running comedy series, Childrens Hospital on which he played Dr. Blake Downs, Flake the Clown and Rory Spindell. Corddry took home four Emmy wins on the show for Best Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2016, and 2012 and 2013 wins for Outstanding Special Class – Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs. Childrens Hospital ran for 87 episodes.

Childrens Hospital spawned the spinoff series Medical Police which debuted on Netflix in 2020.

Adam Ray is bringing his Dr. Phil parody to Netflix with a wild new special in which the comedian — dressed as the mustachioed talk show host — will come face to face with Dr. Phil himself.

Debuting on Netflix on Nov. 19, the untitled “Adam Ray’s Dr. Phil Comedy Special” will also see Ray-as-Phil interview special guests including Patton Oswalt, Jay Pharoah and “Gollum,” and get to know the audience through silly questions and games.

His daughter Shannon Amos shared in an Instagram post Tuesday night that she was “without words” after learning of her father’s death through the media.

Netflix doesn’t license out its series and films to others, and now it is pumping the brakes on just how many films its licenses from others.

In the second half of 2023 (July 1-December 31), Netflix had 7,700 acquired films in its library, according to a MoffettNathanson dissection of the streamer’s latest data dump. Sounds like a lot, right? It is, until you consider that the tally is 20 percent lower than what the service had in the first six months of the year.

A quick note: “acquired” in this case refers to content licensed to Netflix, like its current number 1 film on the platform, “Godzilla Minus One” (pictured above), not movies it buys outright (like “Hit Man” from the Venice Film Festival) or produces for itself (like “Maestro”).

The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.

One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.
