What's not to like about this?
Yes, it is of its time but there's charm all the way through.
It's interesting to see the different characters and how they interact. It's really not that much different now, which of course it wouldn't be just ninety odd years later.
I liked how women were portrayed with agency and flair, even if the strapping and sensible men eventually took the wheel.
It's also interesting to note the social history of the time, the real feeling that something bad was about to happen. Maybe if we had more slapstick in our films, trying to get across a serious message, we'd be in a better place now to face and defeat our threats.
Miss Froy, governess, sweet old lady, and a terrific spy to boot.
It's not a spoiler, the film is almost a hundred years old!!!!

I liked this and really wanted to rate it higher, but it took me two sessions to get through, so, it gets a pass.
I'm really pleased that filmmakers are being brave and mixing things up with multiple languages and cultures. It makes for far more interesting stuff.
And this was good. Just a tad obvious in places.
I liked the portrayal of teenage angst, mixed with the weirdness of cults. The German setting was interesting, given the nature of the world right now, and served as a good not so subtle metaphor for the dangers of rampant ideology.
The standout character for me was the young man. A lost and sad soul.
There's plot holes a plenty, but the overall tale is one of caution.
This deserved to be way better.

This is one of those films I stumbled across on Netflix, knew nothing about it, read the one or two sentence blurb, checked the actors, and dove straight in without any expectations.
That's not always a good way to spend an evening, but I'd been trawling through different platforms and got annoyed and settled on this. I was blown away!
This skips back and forth over time but not in a confusing way. Everyone is stellar in it.
There's enough creepiness and misery to keep the tone going without making you feel too depressed.
There's different strands and plots but they all link like a spider's web.
I'm assuming some of the accents are a bit off, but then I guess even many American actors would struggle with that too!
Like I said, this is bleak with flashes of hope. I'll probably come back and give it a ten after I've watched it again!
