First off let me say that I thought the two leads did their jobs well. They were excellent at portraying tech obsessed people who have no life skills that don't involve electronics. The characters themselves, while having some endearing moments, like watching a child do something stupid but it's cute, are so inept you kind of dislike them. The male lead is the ultimate beta male and he freely admits he has zero man skills and he says he isn't even that good at the other stuff besides cooking.
The female lead is a little better. Basically they go off the grid for a week and an alien invasion involving alcoholic "poofs" happens. I really don't think we're supposed to admire these two. I think the point was to show how inept these two are. They are neurotic, have virtually no practical skills, and have bought into the tech/hippie/liberal lifestyle so much that outside of a controlled, regulated environment, they are clueless.
There's one scene where they remember there's a gun in the basement and he spends 3 minutes ranting about gun statistics and how guns are so dangerous. When he finally tries to shoot the gun he's so freaked out by the actual firing of the weapon that they totally discount defending themselves with it. It reminded me of the reporter who fired an AR-15 (one of the softest recoils of any rifle) and absolutely lost his mind acting like he'd just fired a large bore elephant gun.
It had potential. I mean, I really wanted to know more about the proofs and if this was an invasion or because of the lack of communication, something more benign. But the film literally ends with no resolutions, no questions answered, and the two leads not making a lot of headway into growing. (Other than perhaps having a baby forced on them and actually appearing to get around their earlier disgust at the thought of having children) So if I were you I'd pick something that isn't going to leave you unsatisfied in the end. Having said that, I'd love to see the two leads in other projects that display their obvious talents better.
