Character actor, first on stage in Liverpool repertory theatre; later also as writer/director. After wartime service, appeared in films; briefly in romantic leads, but later relegated to playing exasperated buffoons or being comic foil in "Carry On" comedies.

Trained at RADA, he made his stage debut in the late 1920s and spent much of his career acting, writing and directing for the theatre.

On BBC radio he played Cyril in the series 'Just William'.
