In the years leading up to 1982’s Murder by Phone, telephones had mostly been used as a portent in horror — that first tangible sign of danger. In many pitches, both old and new, the recipients of creepy calls would have anywhere from moments to days before meeting their grisly fate. The killer could be lurking right around the corner, or a death curse required extra time to ripen. The villain in Michael Anderson’s film, on the other hand, was less patient and more direct. Ranking in second place is the Michael Curtiz classic “Casablanca” (1943). Following in third place is the powerful Steven Spielberg film “Schindler’s List” (1993). Rounding out the top five are Coppola’s “The Godfather Part II” (1974) in fourth place and Billy Wilder‘s “The Apartment” (196o) in fifth place.

At the bottom of the list of the Best Picture winners is “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952) from Cecil B. DeMille. There’s a popular idiom often attributed to Picasso about how good artists copy and great artists steal. Yvonne Furneaux, the glamorous actress who had memorable performances in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Le Amiche, Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion, has died. She was 98.

Furneaux died July 5 at her home in North Hampton, New Hampshire, of complications from a stroke, her son, Nicholas Natteau, told The Hollywood Reporter.

She also was the female lead in the Hammer horror film The Mummy (1959), starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Though she considered the project less than ideal, she said she ultimately learned from those actors that “if you don’t take a film like The Mummy seriously and put your heart and soul into it, then you can bring it down,” she explained in Mark A. Miller’s 2010 book, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and Horror Cinema.

She starred in Italian, French, German and Spanish films during her career.

From Academy Award-nominated director Michael Anderson (Around The World In Eighty Days) and screenwriter Luciano Vincenzoni comes a gripping and terrifying tale of man versus beast.

Donald Trump met with his probation officer on Monday following his conviction late last month on 34 felonies for crimes he committed to help boost his election chances when he first ran for president in 2016.

The presumptive Republican nominee for president sat for his pre-sentencing probation interview from Mar-a-Lago alongside his attorney Todd Blanche. A female probation officer interviewed him over a special virtual network with added security measures.

Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the hush-money trial, allowed the interview to be virtual and for Blanche to be present, following no objection from prosecutors.

Judge Juan Merchan of the Donald Trump hush money case alerted Trump’s lawyer and Manhattan prosecutors of a Facebook user who seemingly revealed the jury’s verdict before it was announced. The user, named Michael Anderson, claimed he was a cousin of one of the jurors and posted his reaction to the trial on the social media platform.

“My cousin is a juror and says Trump is getting convicted,” Anderson wrote. “Thank you folks for all your hard work!”

Merchan explained the situation in a letter to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and Todd Blanche, Trump’s attorney. On May 30, a 12-person jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of fraud related to the alleged affair with Stormy Daniels. The historic verdict made Trump the first former president to become a convicted felon.

The original post from Anderson was marked as “old week old” according to Merchan’s letter.

Don Murray, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance opposite Marilyn Monroe in the 1956 film adaptation of William Inge’s play “Bus Stop,” has died. He was 94.

His son Christopher confirmed his death to the New York Times.

In the 2017 reboot of “Twin Peaks,” he played Bushnell Mullins, the chief executive of Lucky 7 Insurance.

Murray also starred in the fourth entry in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”; played Brooke Shield’s father in “Endless Love”; and recurred on prime-time soap “Knots Landing” as Sid Fairgate.

BAFTA Breakthrough is a wonderful Netflix-supported initiative that celebrates the very best of young talent. In its 10th year, the alumni boasts the likes of Florence Pugh, Tom Holland and Letitia Wright – and this year comes a whole host of exciting new names. One of which caught our eye especially, which is Vivian Oparah, who shone in Peckham-set rom-com Rye Lane, which enamoured viewers with its spring-time release. We discuss what it means to her to be named as a BAFTA Breakthrough artist, and naturally we look back to Rye Lane, to talk about shooting the film, and the lasting, indelible impact it has left. She also looks ahead to a future that we’re gonna consider pretty damn bright.

A galaxy of 42 emerging creative talents from across the U.S., U.K. and India have been unveiled as the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort.

The selected talents have worked on some of the most lauded projects over the last several months including “The Last of Us,” “1923,” “Blue Jean,” “Rye Lane,” “Rocket Boys” and “Joyland.”

Breakthrough is BAFTA’s flagship new talent initiative in partnership with Netflix, drawn from creatives working in film, games and television. Awarded to those in the midst of, or on the cusp of their breakthrough moment, the year-long initiative includes one-to-one meetings and career guidance, full voting membership, access to BAFTA events and screenings, as well as networking events, both in the U.K. and internationally.

This year’s cohort comprises creatives spanning craft specialisms from hair and make up, production, editing and games design, to performance, directing and cinematography and is from diverse ethnic backgrounds and abilities.

Six of the 20 UK talents have previously been named Screen Stars of Tomorrow.

Actors Bella Ramsey and Vivian Oparah, and filmmakers Adjani Salmon and Raine Allen-Miller are among 32 talents selected for the 10th anniversary edition of the Bafta Breakthrough programme.

The 2023 edition of the talent-spotting scheme includes 20 UK names, and 12 individuals from the US.

Let's be honest: it's kind of a surprise that it's taken this long for killer whales to revolt against humans. We've poisoned their oceans, killed their young, and forced them into a life of showbiz in cramped theme park pools. Humans had a good run but it seems that orcas are the new mammals in charge.

Sailors working off the coast of Western Europe have reported a series of attacks by a group of orcas they said seemed to be "coordinated." This included striking and sinking a number of boats, although no human casualties have been reported. Some scientists said spikes in aggression may have been started by a female orca nicknamed White Gladis, who is believed to have suffered trauma after a collision with a sailboat.

Award shows like the Emmys are, essentially, marketing campaigns. Instead of trying to sell viewers on a show, the targets are the respective academy's voters. Since no company can market like Amazon, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power might get some overdue justice for genre fare at these award shows.

The nominations for the Emmys are a few months away. If the Writers Guild of America strike continues until then, everyone will have bigger problems for their consideration. If the awards season gets to go off uninterrupted, then it's possible that The Rings of Power could end up nominated in categories genre fare rarely breaks into. Though the budget for the series may lean towards ridiculous, much of it ended up on the screen. TV series A League Of Their Own, What We Do In The Shadows and the film Bros were among the recipients of the 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles last night.

Hosted by comedian and actress Margaret Cho, the ceremony saw awards handed out in 15 of a total 33 categories, with remaining winners for select categories to be announced at GLAAD’s New York Ceremony on Saturday, May 13. Hulu, the awards’ official streaming partner, will stream the Los Angeles event on Wednesday, April 12.

On Thursday night, stars gathered for the annual GLAAD Media Awards, and they took a stand in support of the queer community.

Amid the growing attacks against LGBTQ+ people — particularly the trans community — currently going on in the U.S., this year’s GLAAD Media Awards took on a particularly urgent tone Thursday night in Beverly Hills, and one that brought it home to Hollywood as well.

After Jennifer Coolidge and Jane Lynch kicked off the show, followed by host Margaret Cho celebrating the news of Donald Trump’s indictment, A League of Their Own showrunner Will Graham got real when accepting the show’s award for outstanding new TV series.

The big winners at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards included “A League of Their Own,” “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Bros.”

The honors were handed out Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills during a ceremony hosted by comedian and “Fire Island” star Margaret Cho.

Christina Aguilera received the Advocate for Change award, which was introduced by Michael Anderson, a survivor of last November’s Club Q shooting in Colorado. Puerto Rican rapper-singer Bad Bunny received the Vanguard award, presented by Ricky Martin, and actor Jeremy Pope received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, presented by his “The Inspection” co-star Gabrielle Union.

Since 1990, the annual GLAAD Media Awards has recognized various media that has provided accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community, celebrating individuals and their work in film, television, journalism, comic books and music.

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, has announced that for the third consecutive year, Hulu will serve as the official streaming destination for the GLAAD Media Awards.

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today announced that Grammy Award-winning music superstar Christina Aguilera will receive GLAAD’s Advocate for Change Award at the 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, March 30, 2022.

Global recording artist and actor Bad Bunny will receive the Vanguard Award and film, television and Broadway star Jeremy Pope will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. During the Los Angeles ceremony, GLAAD will also announce award recipients for LGBTQ representation in categories that span film, TV, news, and Spanish-language media. Earlier this year, GLAAD announced nearly 300 nominees.

George Orwell's pessimistic 1948 novel 1984 is probably the most important political book of the last century.

The Bond franchise which has been with us so long, has become so deeply entrenched in popular culture, that we often forget what it was that first distinguished the Bonds a half-century ago. Skyfall might be one of the best of the Bonds, and even, arguably, one of the best big-budget big-action flicks to come along in quite a while, but it’s not alone. The annual box office is – and has been, for quite some time – dominated by big, action-packed blockbusters of one sort of another. The Bonds aren’t even the only action-driven spy flicks (Mr. James Bond, I’d like you to meet Mr. Jason Bourne and Mr. Ethan Hunt).

That’s not to take anything away from the superb entertainment Skyfall is, or the sentimentally treasured place the Bonds hold. It’s only to say that where there was once just the one, there are now many.

Gary Cooper movies on TCM: Cooper at his best and at his weakest Gary Cooper is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” star today, Aug. 30, '15. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any Cooper movie premiere – despite the fact that most of his Paramount movies of the '20s and '30s remain unavailable. This evening's features are Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Sergeant York (1941), and Love in the Afternoon (1957). Mr. Deeds Goes to Town solidified Gary Cooper's stardom and helped to make Jean Arthur Columbia's top female star. The film is a tad overlong and, like every Frank Capra movie, it's also highly sentimental. What saves it from the Hell of Good Intentions is the acting of the two leads – Cooper and Arthur are both excellent – and of several supporting players. The last surviving pilot, New Zealander Les Munro – who is name-checked twice in the film – died this week at the age of 96. Just two of the original 133 Dam Busters are still alive (George “Johnny” Johnson, from the UK, who was a bomb-aimer and Canadian front-gunner Fred Sutherland); 53 were killed during the operation. Teen-focused sci-fi dystopias are all the rage at the moment, between this month's The Maze Runner, Divergent, The Host, and of course the mighty Hunger Games. But none of them can hold a candle to Michael Anderson's classic Logan's Run, which was made the year before Star Wars came along and changed sci-fi blockbusters forever.

The 85-year history of the Academy Awards is rife with statistical oddities, and one that has the potential to play out this Sunday is among the most intriguing: a split between the films that win Best Picture and Best Director.

Though conventional wisdom has long held that only one film will walk away with both prizes on Oscar night, many pundits are predicting that the awards will instead go to two different movies this year, with "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuaron expected to snag the Best Director statuette, while "12 Years a Slave" (or "American Hustle," depending on where your loyalties lie) is the favorite to win Best Picture.
