Lengthy running times have largely confined the films of Filipino director Lav Diaz to the festival circuit: His breakthrough “Evolution of a Filipino Family” was shot over 10 years and clocked in at over 10 hours, and subsequent features like “Melancholia” and “Norte, the End of History” followed suit. Diaz has been categorized as a practitioner of “slow cinema,” and this has made his work sound even more forbidding outside hardcore cinephile circles.

But “When the Waves Are Gone,” his current feature, is surprisingly approachable and engrossing, especially in its dynamic first third when we are introduced to our two protagonists: Hermes (John Lloyd Cruz), a cop and instructor at a police academy, and Primo (Ronnie Lazaro), a former cop who has just gotten out of jail after 10 years and is seeking vengeance against Hermes for helping to get him sentenced.

The 79th Venice International Film Festival has just announced the line-up for the next edition. The 79th Venice International Film Festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera. It will take place at Venice Lido from 31 August to 10 September 2022. The Festival is officially recognised by the Fiapf (International Federation of Film Producers Association).

The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organises retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival are set to welcome their largest contingent of visiting filmmakers.

There will be 100 filmmakers, three international delegations, international stars and industry representatives from dozens of countries across the region attending the festival and awards ceremony which runs from November 19-29.

Thirty-nine films from 22 Asia Pacific countries are nominated in this year's Apsa Awards, 34 of which will screen to local audiences at Bapff.

Red carpet arrivals will take place in King George Square from 5.30 on November 26, ahead of the ceremony in Brisbane's City Hall.

The film will compete for best feature, achievement in directing for Hou Hsiao-Hsien and achievement in cinematography for Mark Lee Ping-Bing.

Other nominees in the best feature category include multi-territory co-production Cementery Of Splendour, Korean feature End Of Winter and Japanese/French drama Journey To The Shore.

Elsewhere, France’s foreign language Oscar submission Mustang received a best youth feature film nod, while Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look Of Silence will compete for best documentary.

A total of 39 films from 22 countries have received nominations.

The awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 26 November at City Hall, Brisbane.

Asghar Farhadi’s Nader and Simin, A Separation added to its long list of accolades after it scooped up four awards at the 6th Asian Film Awards (Afa) in Hong Kong. It won the Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and Best Editor.

Donny Damara won the Best Actor for Lovely Man (Indonesia) while Deanie IP won the Best Actress for A Simple Life (Hong Kong).

The 6th Afa that took place on March 19 is one of the opening events of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong and takes place with two other flagship events of the Hkiffs: the 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival (Hkiff), and the 10th Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf).

The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate and the other nominations for the 2012 Asian Film Awards have been announced. The 6th Annual Asian Film Awards was presented by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (Hkiffs) “to recognize excellence of film professionals in the film industries of Asian cinema.” This year’s award ceremony will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 19, 2012.

The Lopez-Aranda family has fallen far from grace. Supposedly inspired by the news of the kidnapping of a famous journalist by the Abu Sayyaf, Sigfried Barros-Sanchez's Tsardyer (Charger) tells the story of Shihab (Martin delos Santos), a young boy who is recruited into the group to run back and forth from the kidnappers' den to the nearest house to charge the cellular phones used by the kidnappers to communicate their demands for the release of their captives. Barros-Sanchez, unsatisfied with the already promising premise of the boy who gets caught right in the middle of the war, needlessly expands his reach, tackling without benefit of any clear direction everything from corruption within the military and the role of media in the troubles in Mindanao. The film, already hurt by an ambition that is supported mainly by convoluted storylines that only reveal empty aspirations of social relevance, is rendered further unwatchable by stale and tasteless filmmaking.
