Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later is one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of 2025, thanks in large part to the haunting first trailer that was unveiled earlier this year. The second trailer has been completed for the upcoming threequel, and the lucky attendees of this year's CinemaCon got to witness it. The rest of us film fans will have to wait until Sony releases the trailer online. But, we haven't left the con empty-handed, as some new stills from 28 Years Later have been released, teasing the devastation that has swept across the world following the Rage Virus pandemic.

Four stills from 28 Years Later were released depicting Aaron Taylor-Johnson's perilous journey across the decimated world, with his character's son. Three of the images feature Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) traversing the wasteland with their bows. The fourth and most visceral picture shows off one of the haunting zombies in the new film.

Sony Pictures kicked off the studio presentations at CinemaCon 2025 on Monday with a lively filmmaker-led session, revealing Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the title of the 2026 tentpole starring Tom Holland, and dating Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse for June 4, 2027.

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, bookended the session, kicking off with his annual theatrical-first message to attendees in Las Vegas in which he promised “the future will be great” if studios and exhibitors work together.

Danny Boyle and Nia DaCosta reminded the audience at CinemaCon’s opening night that what is dead can never die with fresh looks at the upcoming films, 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. First, Boyle spoke to the crowd filling the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, cracking jokes about the years he’s spent in the post-apocalyptic world. “I still love blowing shit up,” the filmmaker said to the attendees, before offering a brand-new, never-before-seen trailer for the feature.

Sony Pictures unleashed a new look at Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” – the threequel to the director’s groundbreaking 2002 outbreak film – at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday night.

The franchise refresh picks up, well, 28 years after the terrifying Rage virus broke out across the globe (pandemics now being shorthand for worldwide audiences). Man has found a way to survive amongst the flesh-eating zombies, on a remote English island connected to the mainland. It’s guarded, obviously, within in an inch of all lives involved.

“I still love an apocalypse,” Boyle said from the stage. “I love killing the infected. I still love blowing shit up. That’s how my agent describes my best stuff.”

He wasn’t kidding. Boyle shared a full second trailer exclusively with the exhibitors, which significantly ratchets up the terror from a teaser shared earlier this year.

While 2024 was a great year, 2025 is going to be something as we will see the release of much-anticipated films like the Last Conjuring film and Guillermo del Toro‘s take on the classic novel Frankenstein. Nearly two decades after the last entry in the 28 Days Later franchise premiered, big plans are ahead for the post-apocalyptic horror film series as 28 Years Later kicks off an intended trilogy. The film's director and writer tease "a whole different approach" as they share new details about the trio of films.

Speaking with Empire, 28 Years Later director and scribe Alex Garland hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming trilogy, which kicks off when the titular film premieres this summer. Though ideas for the movie were ample, Boyle and Garland eventually crafted a version they wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle said. “It was about what that 28 years gives you.”

There had never been a zombie film like 28 Days Later. Not least because its zombies technically weren’t zombies. Back in 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland ripped up the undead rulebook – with hordes of flesh-eating former-humans that weren’t actually reanimated corpses, but infected with viral rage; who didn’t shuffle and shamble like Romero’s zombies, but legged it full-pelt; and who brought societal collapse not in the United States, but across the UK. Now, Boyle and Garland are back with 28 Years Later – evolving the apocalypse decades beyond the events of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, and kicking off an expansive new saga to boot. Non-zombies are, once again, all the rage.

After years of noodling around on possible ideas for where 28 could go next, Garland eventually came to Boyle with a version he wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle tells Empire.

The 28 Years Later sequel receives an official title and release date, and it will hit theaters less than a year after the 2025 follow-up.

Ahead of a June 20, 2025 release, the first impressive trailer has now arrived.

28 Years Later is an upcoming horror film set in a post-apocalyptic world, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. It’s the third movie in the 28 Days Later series, starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Cillian Murphy, who also acts as an executive producer.

Unlike the previous films, this one isn’t produced by 20th Century Studios. It’s a joint project between Columbia Pictures, British Film Institute, Decibel Films, and DNA Films. The film will be released on June 20, 2025, and was filmed on an iPhone, along with its sequel, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple.

The movie’s trailer was recently released, offering a glimpse of the atmosphere and a sneak peek of the Bone Temple.

The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Cillian Murphy, who returns as Jim.

The zombies are still on the prowl in 28 Years Later, a long-awaited sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. In the first trailer for the film, directed by Danny Boyle, a group of survivors come up against those rage virus-infected zombies, as well as some strange fellow humans.
