Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later is one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of 2025, thanks in large part to the haunting first trailer that was unveiled earlier this year. The second trailer has been completed for the upcoming threequel, and the lucky attendees of this year's CinemaCon got to witness it. The rest of us film fans will have to wait until Sony releases the trailer online. But, we haven't left the con empty-handed, as some new stills from 28 Years Later have been released, teasing the devastation that has swept across the world following the Rage Virus pandemic.
Four stills from 28 Years Later were released depicting Aaron Taylor-Johnson's perilous journey across the decimated world, with his character's son. Three of the images feature Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) traversing the wasteland with their bows. The fourth and most visceral picture shows off one of the haunting zombies in the new film.

Danny Boyle and Nia DaCosta reminded the audience at CinemaCon’s opening night that what is dead can never die with fresh looks at the upcoming films, 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. First, Boyle spoke to the crowd filling the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, cracking jokes about the years he’s spent in the post-apocalyptic world. “I still love blowing shit up,” the filmmaker said to the attendees, before offering a brand-new, never-before-seen trailer for the feature.
Here’s a description of what we saw:

Turns out zombies don’t mellow with age.
Sony Pictures unleashed a new look at Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” – the threequel to the director’s groundbreaking 2002 outbreak film – at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday night.
The franchise refresh picks up, well, 28 years after the terrifying Rage virus broke out across the globe (pandemics now being shorthand for worldwide audiences). Man has found a way to survive amongst the flesh-eating zombies, on a remote English island connected to the mainland. It’s guarded, obviously, within in an inch of all lives involved.
“I still love an apocalypse,” Boyle said from the stage. “I love killing the infected. I still love blowing shit up. That’s how my agent describes my best stuff.”
He wasn’t kidding. Boyle shared a full second trailer exclusively with the exhibitors, which significantly ratchets up the terror from a teaser shared earlier this year.

Exclusive: Zygi Kamasa, the veteran film executive who launched True Brit Entertainment 15 months ago, is on a scary mission to bring back Britain’s horror film heritage. Today, he reveals that his company will release period shocker The Dreadful starring Game of Thrones duo Sophie Turner and Kit Harington and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden in the UK.
“I feel very much that I want to go further in trying to encourage the UK industry to make more horror movies because horror still works consistently well in cinemas,” Kamasa insists, citing the success of last year’s occult horror Longlegs.
Sophie Turner, Kit Harington
But Longlegs, and many other recent horror movies, were American made.
“If we’re going to do horror in this country, go back. I mean we were dominating horror in the Sixties and Seventies, the Hammer horror and all that.

2024 was a great year for horror fans as we got horrifyingly beautiful films like Nosferatu and Longlegs. While 2024 was a great year, 2025 is going to be something as we will see the release of much-anticipated films like the Last Conjuring film and Guillermo del Toro‘s take on the classic novel Frankenstein. So, we decided to compile a list of the most anticipated horror films that are coming in 2025.

Presence is an upcoming supernatural horror thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh from a screenplay by David Koepp. The upcoming film revolves around a family who move into a suburban neighborhood and soon believe their house is haunted. While the plot for Presence sounds like a typical horror film, the ultimate twist, aka hook for the upcoming Soderbergh film, is that the film is shot from the ghost’s perspective.

Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later helped to redefine the zombie horror sub-genre with its terrifyingly fast Rage zombies. The director is returning to the genre with the long-awaited 28 Years Later, and one of the movie's stars, Jodie Comer, recently revealed that the zombies are just as terrifying on set as they are on-screen. Comer stars alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes in the new movie, which is set to release on June 20, 2025. The first trailer teased the return of the terrifying sprinting zombies, but Comer says audiences ain't seen nothin' yet.
During an interview with Empire Magazine, Jodie Comer revealed she was terrified of shooting alongside the film's zombies during production. "The thing about our stunt performers playing the infected is they really don’t take the speed off for you," the Killing Eve star revealed. In 28 Days Later, the virus is spread through infected monkeys that are accidentally...

The first trailer for Danny Boyle's long-awaited 28 Days Later threequel, aptly titled 28 Years Later (though we do wonder what happened to "Months"), was released late last year to an overwhelmingly positive reception, and Empire has been sharing new promo stills and interviews over the past week or so.
Though the teaser did give us a couple of quick glimpses of Jodie Comer's character, Isla, we're only now getting a proper look at the Killing Eve alum thanks to a new image, which also spotlights Ralph Fiennes as the mysterious (possibly villainous) Dr. Kelson.
Though Boyle's original is technically a zombie movie, the fast-moving Infected humans are not actually undead - not that this makes them any less terrifying.

When Danny Boyle and Alex Garland unleashed 28 Days Later back in 2002, they also introduced something new into the horror ecosystem: the running dead. Previously, zombies in cinema had been slow, shuffling, shambling things, creeping ever-forward in the night. But the very nature of 28 Days Later’s infected – technically not zombies, but humans who have contracted a blood-spewing rage virus – saw the afflicted sprint at a terrifying pace, with heart-pounding results.
Even decades on, the cardio-prone terrors have lost none of their power – as Jodie Comer found out on the set of Boyle and Garland’s much-anticipated follow-up, 28 Years Later. “The thing about our stunt performers playing the infected is they really don’t take the speed off for you,” she tells Empire. “They chase you. The highly awaited 28 Years Later won’t hit theaters until June, but we’re already getting hints about what’s next for the franchise. Ralph Fiennes and director Danny Boyle gave Empire some exciting details about Fiennes’ character, Dr. Kelson.
He’s not just a major player in the upcoming movie, but his role will grow even bigger in the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which arrives in 2026 under the direction of Nia DaCosta.
Fiennes describes Dr. Kelson as a survivor with a unique take on the world: “He’s quite out-there in his views on the world. I think audiences will assume something about him and then see where it goes.”

Over two decades after the release of the genre-defining zombie film 28 Days Later, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are returning to the realm of horror with the long-awaited 28 Years Later. Essentially helping to jump-start the zombie craze of the 2000s, 28 Days Later follows an average bicycle courier named Jim (Cillian Murphy) who awakens from a month-long coma to find all of London has been besieged by a zombie rage virus. Eschewing the tropes of earlier zombie media, the walkers of 28 Days Later were faster, meaner, and more frightening than their predecessors.
Though Garland and Boyle were only involved peripherally, a sequel was released in 2007 entitled 28 Weeks Later which continued the post-apocalyptic story and was well-received. Meanwhile, the 28 Days Later franchise helped to bring the zombie film back into vogue, and is directly responsible for movies like the Dawn of the Dead remake, spoofs like Shaun of the Dead,...

28 Years Later 3's filming start window and director Danny Boyle's involvement has been revealed ahead of the new trilogy's launch. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Boyle, who were both behind the original 28 Days Later from 2002, the upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film follows an all-new group of survivors living on a small island community in the UK. Their story will be told across an entire trilogy, continuing in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, which has already been shot.
Now, according to Empire, Boyle will be back to direct the third 28 Years Later. However, filming won't begin until after he's seen the responses to the first one.

Nearly two decades after the last entry in the 28 Days Later franchise premiered, big plans are ahead for the post-apocalyptic horror film series as 28 Years Later kicks off an intended trilogy. The film's director and writer tease "a whole different approach" as they share new details about the trio of films.
Speaking with Empire, 28 Years Later director and scribe Alex Garland hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming trilogy, which kicks off when the titular film premieres this summer. Though ideas for the movie were ample, Boyle and Garland eventually crafted a version they wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle said. “It was about what that 28 years gives you.”

When the first trailer for 28 Years Later was unleashed, it's fair to say almost everyone convinced themselves into believing they'd spotted Cillian Murphy as one of the rage-infected zombies.
That was later debunked, of course, but will we see Murphy's Jim in Danny Boyle's long-awaited follow-up to 28 Days Later and - the slightly less well-received - 28 Weeks Later? Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like this movie is going to mark an on-screen reunion for the actor and filmmaker.
Producer Andrew Macdonald tells Empire Online (via FearHQ.com), "[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line."
"He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer," Macdonald adds, "and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

With 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are preparing to take audiences further into the post-rage-virus apocalypse than ever before. In their original 28 Days Later, the societal collapse had only really just begun. But decades on, there are scattered survivors finding a way to live in the ruins of what came before – not just the Holy Island community that plays home to Aaron-Taylor Johnson’s Jamie, Jodie Comer’s Isla, and their son Spike (Alfie Williams), but other mysterious figures. Take, for instance, Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson – a physically imposing figure who’ll play a part both in this year’s 28 Years Later, and Nia DaCosta’s already-shot follow-up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, expected to arrive in 2026.
With his stark appearance, bloodied visage and proximity to that towering structure of skulls (as seen in our exclusive image above), place your bets now on whether Kelson will be friend or foe.

There had never been a zombie film like 28 Days Later. Not least because its zombies technically weren’t zombies. Back in 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland ripped up the undead rulebook – with hordes of flesh-eating former-humans that weren’t actually reanimated corpses, but infected with viral rage; who didn’t shuffle and shamble like Romero’s zombies, but legged it full-pelt; and who brought societal collapse not in the United States, but across the UK. Now, Boyle and Garland are back with 28 Years Later – evolving the apocalypse decades beyond the events of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, and kicking off an expansive new saga to boot. Non-zombies are, once again, all the rage.
After years of noodling around on possible ideas for where 28 could go next, Garland eventually came to Boyle with a version he wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle tells Empire.

More like 22 years later, amirite? “28 Days Later,” Danny Boyle’s seminal zombie horror movie from 2002, is finally being made available for digital rental and purchase after spending years in streaming limbo.
Sony on Monday, December 16 released the trailer for “28 Years Later,” the upcoming sequel in the franchise that reunites Boyle with screenwriter Alex Garland. The movie looks awesome — even if the corpse of Cillian Murphy has seen better days (check out the 1:48 mark in the trailer to see what we’re talking about).
But the real surprise was that “28 Days Later” is being rescued from that purgatory where it was stuck for so long. The film will be made available on digital rental and purchase via PVOD on Dec. 18 and is available for pre-order immediately.

Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) starred in the original 28 Days Later, executive produces the much-anticipated sequel, and is quite possibly a zombie in 28 Years Later. The buzz on social media is that Murphy appears in the trailer, rising from a cornfield at the 1:48 minute point.
While Murphy’s role remains unconfirmed, the trailer does show what the world’s like 10,228 days after the apocalypse.
“Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,” reads Sony Pictures’ synopsis. “One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.

“28 Years Later,” the long-in-the-works sequel to zombie horror movies “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later,” is coming to theaters next summer, but Sony is already building anticipation. On Tuesday, the studio released an intense trailer for the film. Director Danny Boyle (Academy Award winner for “Slumdog Millionaire”) and screenwriter Alex Garland (Academy Award nominee for “Ex Machina”) resume those roles for the first time since the acclaimed first film, which was released in 2002.
“28 Years Later” is set in rural England many years after the “rage virus” ravaged the world, turning the infected into fast, aggressive zombies, which was innovative in the first film, as up to that point zombies had generally been depicted in their slow, shuffling traditional state. “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,...
