Had Joker: Folie à Deux followed a similar trajectory to 2019's Joker, the sequel would have likely remained #1 at the box office for several weeks. Instead, gory slasher flick Terrifier 3 will take the top spot this weekend with a projected $16 million - $17 million North American debut.
In second place is DreamWorks Animation's The Wild Robot which, during weekend number three, will earn $13.9 million. We'd expected Joker: Folie à Deux to slip to third place, but no, it's been beaten by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is on course to gross somewhere around $7.2 million - $7.4 million during its sixth weekend.
As for the Clown Prince of Crime, he's well and truly lost his smile with a shocking $6.6 million - $6.8 million haul from 4,102 theaters from its second weekend.
That's a record-breaking decline of 82%, a new record previously held by The Marvels which dropped by 78% in the same period. Warner Bros. stands to...

Romantic movies aren't always necessarily such light-hearted affairs, with plenty of films centering on love quickly taking turns towards the dark and depressing. In the modern era, romantic comedies are the most commonly associated type of film with romantic love. Yet ever since William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, pairing love with tragedy has been a common practice in storytelling. Plenty of films revolving around romantic relationships can get quite morose as they progress in a multitude of different ways.
There are several different avenues romantic movies can take in order to become more bleak. In many cases, romance films with abrupt genre shifts will combine the typical niceties of passionate love with saddening or even downright horrifying events, making for peculiar blends of different types of movies. More rarely, a given romance film will wait until the last minute to make a grand story reveal that re-frames everything in a decidedly macabre context,...

2023 was a rotten year for the DC brand. DC Studios' announcement at the start of the year that the franchise would be rebooted lessened interest in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with each of them struggling at the box office.
Only Blue Beetle really managed to escape the wrath of fans and critics, though it too flopped with $130 million on a budget of over $100 million.
2024's only DC movie is Joker: Folie à Deux and...well, what a week it's been for the sequel. With 33% on Rotten Tomatoes (and 32% courtesy of moviegoers), it's bombed at the box office and will be one of the year's biggest flops when all is said and done.
The blame game has also begun, with filmmaker Todd Phillips said to be responsible for the massive budget after decided he "wanted nothing to do with DC" while making this follow-up.

As Joker: Folie à Deux enters its second weekend in theaters, box office projections point to the sequel dropping to third place behind Terrifier 3 and DreamWorks Animation's The Wild Robot (which opened on September 27).
According to Deadline, Terrifier 3 made roughly $7.7 million on Friday for an expected $15 million weekend. As for The Wild Robot, it grossed $3.6 million yesterday and is expected to earn $13.1 million, an impressive result for a movie that's been buoyed by glowing reviews.
Then, there's Joker: Folie à Deux; in a distant third, the DC Comics adaptation managed to hit $2.8 million yesterday for a projected $8 million - $9 million second weekend, a decline of 77%.
The Joker sequel should be pretty safe in third place as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will make $6.7 million and Transformers One is eyeing $4.1 million.
"There's a warmth in that scene, which is nice," Joker: Folie à Deux star Joaquin Phoenix recently said of the movie's divisive ending.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux.
The ending of Joker: Folie Deux continues a surprising and unusual trend that has already been seen in Lady Gaga's two previous major feature film appearances. Lady Gaga was cast in the sequel to Todd Phillips' 2019 smash-hit, Joker, set outside the mainstream DC Universe, in August 2022, revealed to be bringing DC Comics' Harley Quinn to life opposite Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. Joker. While Joker: Folie Deux has received some criticism, Lady Gaga's performance as Lee Quinzel has been widely praised, adding another entry into her strong filmography.
Lady Gaga is one of the world's most beloved and best-selling music artists, and she has proven her versatility time and again, which has translated brilliantly into her on-screen acting roles. Aside from small appearances in Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Gaga began to...

Joker: Folie Deux is the sequel to a film that grossed over $1 billion worldwide, so its needless to say that the expectations were terribly high. However, now that it has proven itself as a box office flop, fingers are being pointed in every direction, including at director Todd Phillips.
Per Variety, many insiders feel that Todd Phillips desire to keep his Joker sequel separate from the broader DC cinematic universe, helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is part of what led to its downfall. Sources report that Phillips had a vision for the film, and chose to cut out Safran and Gunn who did not attend the films premiere at the TLC Chinese Theater and pursue his own vision of the musical sequel. To underscore this point, when the opening minutes of the film screened, there was no DC logo.

Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux features a background character who gets the spotlight in a pretty shocking manner towards the end of the movie, and actor Connor Storrie has now spoken about his role for the first time.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, major spoilers follow.
At the end of the highly divisive sequel, Arthur Fleck meets a violent when he's killed by another Arkham inmate (Storrie) after first taking responsibility for the crimes he committed in the original film by renouncing his "Joker" persona and confessing during his trial.
The unnamed individual - who we are supposed to view as the real Joker - stops Fleck to tell him a joke, delivering a killer punchline with repeated stabs to the abdomen. As Arthur bleeds out, we see the inmate carve a Glasgow smile onto his face in the background, indicating that he will ultimately become Batman's nemesis.

The following contains spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux, now playing in theaters.
2019's Joker was a project that explored the origin of the infamous Batman villain. The R-rated film came from the mind of The Hangover director Todd Phillips and saw Joaquin Phoenix front and center as a new character named Arthur Fleck. The film would become a monstrous success for Warner Bros. with a huge box office return and major accolades, including a Best Actor Oscar win for Phoenix. Since Phillips conceived Joker as a standalone project, it was never meant to continue, but that would eventually change, and Joker: Folie Deux would arrive five years later. The follow-up sees a continuation of Arthur Fleck's story at the Arkham State Hospital, crossing paths with Lady Gaga's Lee Quinzel and an ambitious musical element.
The first Joker film certainly had its critics due to its interpretation of the Batman...

In Joker: Folie À Deux, we are told that Arthur Fleck's (Joaquin Phoenix) murderous rampage in the first film was the basis for a TV movie. Lee (Lady Gaga) tells Arthur that she loves the movie and has seen it numerous times, but everyone else seems to think it's "awful."

It has become a common trend in the Hollywood business, for sequels to completely undermine the glory established by the original movie. While it was true for others, nobody would have imagined, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker 2 in this regard. The movie featured a stunning ensemble with Lady Gaga working alongside Phoenix and was directed by filmmaker Tod Phillips.

But if recent reports are to be believed, it comes nowhere near 2019’s Joker, which was not only a huge commercial success. But it also bagged Phoenix his first Academy Award. This has created huge issues for Warner Bros. as well who are already having a bad year with a string of commercially failed projects.

Despite everything that's been going on with Joker: Folie à Deux this week, a case can easily be made for 2019's Joker being one of the best comic book movies ever made.
It certainly left a lasting impression, anyway, with a nail-biting final act featuring Arthur Fleck becoming "Joker" and gunning down talk show host Murray Franklin. His actions inspired Gotham City's disenfranchised to rise up and riot, leading to the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
As for Arthur, he was freed from captivity and gleefully watched the chaos unfold while smearing the blood on his face into the shape of a smile (we'd later learn Joker was captured and sent to Arkham).
There have been rumblings for years that original plans called for Arthur to use a knife to cut a smile across his face. Now, that's been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Here's an excerpt from the...

The Hollywood Reporter has published an in-depth analysis of where things went wrong for Joker: Folie à Deux, detailing the movie's conception and who might be to blame for its failings.
Under pressure from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy - the co-heads of Warner Bros. Pictures - decided to give a Joker sequel the green light. Toby Emmerich had already got the ball rolling, and filmmaker Todd Phillips and lead star Joaquin Phoenix quickly nabbed themselves $20 million paydays.
As for Lady Gaga, she negotiated a deal which saw her paid $12 million to play a new version of Harley Quinn.
Unsurprisingly, De Luca and Abdy "were left reeling" (as was everyone at the studio) after Joker: Folie à Deux's disastrous $37.8 million opening weekend. As for Phillips, he's gone into hiding, "[spending] the weekend in seclusion on a ranch property he owns."

Though an argument can definitely be made that some people are going a bit overboard with their criticisms of the movie, there's no denying that Warner Bros. and director Todd Phillips have a misfire on their hands with Joker: Folie à Deux.
After being hit with a disappointing 33% Rotten Tomatoes score and the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history (D), the downbeat musical sequel only managed to take in around $40 million at the domestic box office (it did slightly better overseas) this past weekend.
According to The UK's Daily Mail, Lady Gaga, who plays a new take on Harley Quinn, is said to be "shocked" at the negative response following the movie's mostly positive reception at the Venice Film Festival.
"Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered.

Yesterday, we learned that Joker: Folie à Deux earned only $37.8 million at the North American box office during its opening weekend. We originally expected a $70 million debut, though the number continuously dropped before landing around the $50 million - $55 million mark.
As the weekend drew closer, though, $40 million started looking like the best possible outcome for the Joker sequel. However, it wasn't just domestically that the divisive movie underperformed.
Variety reveals that it fell short overseas with a $77 million start. That's a noteworthy drop from Warner Bros. Discovery's $81.1 million projections on Sunday and another indication that moviegoers wholly rejected Joker: Folie à Deux whether they'd seen it or not.
Now, its revised worldwide total is $114.8 million.
This is an unmitigated disaster; in 2019, Joker opened with $96.2 million in the U.S. alone and eventually grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Analysts currently believe the best this follow-up will manage is $275 million when all is said and done.

We didn't think things could get any worse for Joker: Folie à Deux but following Warner Bros. $40 million opening weekend estimates and analysts predicting $39 million, the sequel actually debuted in North America with $37.8 million.
This places the Joker sequel significantly below other comic book movie flops, including Morbius ($39 million), The Marvels ($46.1 million), and The Flash ($55 million).
Based on how those performed, chances are Joker: Folie à Deux will end its domestic run with around $70 million. In 2019, Joker's opening weekend was a massive $96 million. If Todd Phillips had box office bonuses written into his contract for hitting certain benchmarks after the first movie grossed over $1 billion, he's got nothing to smile about today.

The late great country music legend Kris Kristofferson also boasted an impressive movie career filled with iconic roles. Although Kristofferson had already made it big with hits like Me and Bobby McGee, his major acting debut in 1972 signaled an important new dimension to his acclaimed career, and he continued acting consistently until shortly before his retirement in 2021. While Kristofferson sadly died in September 2024, aged 88, he left behind an impressive body of work in country music and on the big screen.
From his extraordinary acting debut in the cult classic Cisco Pike to his final role as country musician Blaze Foleys father in Ethan Hawkes insightful biopic Blaze, Kristofferson proved himself a talented actor capable of imbuing his roles with his real emotive power. With iconic portrayals in Westerns like Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and the dramatic rollercoaster that was A Star Is Born, Kristofferson possessed a unique cinematic charm and undeniable onscreen charisma.

Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last month, and was greeted with a 12½-minute standing ovation.
Despite this warm reception (which you should never take seriously), the reviews that followed were mixed, and now that the movie is in theaters, we know that the majority of critics - and audiences, for that matter - did not care for the sequel at all.
Is there a chance the movie's lead feels the same way?
Some video clips from the Venice premiere have now been shared online, with supposed "lip-reader" technology applied to decipher what stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga were saying to each other during the ovation. While Gaga's responses do seem to line-up, it's far more difficult to figure out if Phoenix's words match the subtitles or if it's just complete nonsense. However, one angle does make it seem like he says "horrible.

Joker: Folie à Deux opened in theaters this weekend to overwhelmingly negative reviews and a dismal debut of $40 million, putting it in the same ballpark as Morbius.
Analysts will no doubt spend weeks trying to figure out where it all went wrong, as will Warner Bros. Discovery. One of the first major projects greenlit under the current leadership regime, the Joker sequel has proven to be a major misstep for the studio.
Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' President of Domestic Distribution, tells The Wall Street Journal, "The movie didn’t land with audiences the way we wanted it to." He'd later add that this movie was a "deeper dive into mental illness," arguing that some of its core male audience struggled to connect with Lady Gaga.
So, yes, the studio appears to be telling itself that Joker: Folie à Deux flopped because guys don't like serious dramas or women.

Lady Gaga’s Joker: Folie à Deux and Adam Driver’s Megalopolis are currently locked in a box office competition. Both films were released a week apart, but their theatrical performances couldn’t be more different from one another. It’s no secret that Joker 2, despite its appalling reviews, is riding on the success of a huge IP and its 2019 predecessor, Joker‘s success.

2019 was a fantastic year for cinema. Personally, I consider Joker one of the best films from those twelve months filled with memorable, thought-provoking works, but I didn’t receive the sequel announcement with much enthusiasm. After all, it was never originally planned, and when that’s the case, the same level of success rarely follows. On top of that, after Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) was cast as a version of Harley Quinn, a marketing campaign began marked by a lack of clarity about whether Joker: Folie à Deux would be a musical. Naturally, this left many viewers – including myself – unable to set fair, realistic expectations.

Lady Gaga will likely take on her first supporting actress Oscar run for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” But how far can “Mother Monster” take a movie with such abysmal reviews?
“Joker: Folie à Deux” picks up with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his violent crimes. As he grapples with his fractured identity, Arthur finds love with fellow inmate Lee (Gaga) and begins embracing the music that has always played inside his chaotic mind.

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment released the newest trailer "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," based on the world of the Mario video game franchise. We haven't seen a Mario Bros. movie since the monstrosity (I say that with love) that was the 1993 live-action "Super Mario Bros.", and before that, the Japanese anime film "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" from 1986.
This time around, we have Chris Pratt voicing the diminutive Italian plumber instead of voice actor Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario, his brother Luigi, and so many other characters since 1992. (Martinet will reportedly lend his voice in a cameo role in this movie.) As for the plot, we know the kingdom of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and many others (including the penguins we saw in the teaser trailer) are in trouble. Bowser (Jack Black) is trying to take over all the galaxies,...

Princess Peach has a long-mysterious history that The Super Mario Bros. Movie can finally explain. Since first being kidnapped by Bowser in 1985, theories have emerged surrounding Princess Peach’s family. She is called “Princess,” yet Mario is always the one to come to her rescue instead of a King or Queen. However, the tables will be turned as Peach takes on a new role and finally gets a break from being kidnapped.
As Mario searches for Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Princess Peach appears to play a vital role in helping him through the Mushroom Kingdom. With monsters like Bowser and Kamek already confirmed, there should be plenty of action while trying to rescue Luigi from Bowser’s clutches. Because of her larger role, The Super Mario Bros. Movie can give Princess Peach a satisfying backstory that also answers the mystery of her title and family.

New The Super Mario Bros. Movie toys reveal a surprise Super Mario Galaxy character in the animated film. The marketing campaign for Illumination and Nintendo's highly-anticipated 2023 film has confirmed the appearances of many familiar characters. Chris Pratt's Mario is at the forefront of the movie, but everyone from Princess Peach, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Luigi have been featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers to this point. These characters represent just a fraction of the familiar elements gamers will see in the animated movie, as nods to Mario's robust video game history are included in other ways.
Between confirming the appearance of classic monsters in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and seeing the other iconic elements like the green pipes and Mario Kart's Rainbow Road, the movie has established a precedent that any part of Mario's games could be included. This now seemingly included the appearance of Lumas from Super Mario Galaxy.

Based on the latest trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the movie is set to fix one of the biggest problems of the Mario franchise. Details about the overall plot of the film are still largely unknown at the moment, but going off of the trailer, part of the plot will involve Luigi being kidnaped by Bowser and Mario and Peach having to rescue him while simultaneously saving the Mushroom Kingdom. This follows the basic story of a Mario game, with the only difference being that it's one of the Mario brothers needing to be rescued instead of Peach.
2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie flips the basic Mario formula, letting it avoid the franchise's big problem with Princess Peach. A big issue with Peach is that, more often than not, she's reduced to a damsel in distress, even when it doesn't make sense for her, but making Peach...

John Leguizamo, star of 1993's Super Mario Bros., discusses how his feelings about the film have changed thanks to fans. Super Mario Bros. was adapted from Nintendo's hit video game franchise, becoming the first film based on a game. Leguizamo starred as Luigi alongside Bob Hoskins as Mario, Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy, and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. Unfortunately, Super Mario Bros. was poorly received by critics and audiences, leading to a substantial loss by taking in 20 million on a reported budget of 48 million.
As reported by /Film, Leguizamo's low opinion of Super Mario Bros. has shifted over the years with the help of loyal fans. Years of attending comic cons have allowed the actor to see a dedicated fanbase who grew up loving the movie despite the negativity it received upon release. Leguizamo says thanks to these passionate fans, "it softened my heart." Check out Leguizamo's comments...

The new Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer may be hiding a classic Donkey Kong character. So far, Cranky Kong is the only character associated with D.K. appearing in the upcoming animated film. However, the two may not be alone, as Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, or even King K. Rool could receive cameos.
At the 1:55 mark in the Super Mario Bros. trailer, the racer on the far left looks identical to Kiddy Kong, the youngest member of the D.K. family in the Donkey Kong universe. Though the character hasn’t appeared in many games, he is well-remembered for his role in one key installment. Kiddy was one of the two protagonists of the 1996 video game, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! In the game, the incredibly strong Kiddy Kong was introduced as Dixie Kong’s baby cousin. The two had to work together to rescue Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong,...

A number of important details could be easily missed in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer. A full trailer for Nintendo’s upcoming Mario movie reveals a great deal about what’s in store for the video game icon when he takes on Bowser. In addition to teasing the plot, the trailer unveiled designs for a few of the movie’s confirmed characters, including Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong.
As expected, Super Mario Bros. Movie is promising a long list of callbacks to classic Mario video games. Arguably the biggest and most welcome surprise in the trailer was the movie’s core cast of characters racing down Rainbow Road. The obvious Mario Kart tribute in the trailer serves as a glimpse into how deep the movie will go with its references. But not all of its Easter eggs and big moments are being held back for the theatrical release.

The latest trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie features a reveal of Rainbow Road, which does a lot to make the movie look better and more exciting. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an animated movie based on the Mario franchise. Not much is known about the movie other than it follows the basic plot of Mario having to stop Bowser from taking over the Mushroom Kingdom. Reactions to the movie have already been mixed due to the criticism of Chris Pratt’s voice acting and the infamous reputation that video game adaptations have, specifically, and very appropriately, the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie.
With that in mind, the reveal of Rainbow Road in the new trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already doing a lot to add to its quality. With the animated feature incorporating elements of Mario Kart in addition to such elements as Mario...
