While the Bateman brother-sister both found early success, being child stars wasn’t always the dream life it seemed. Fame came fast, and with it, the pressures of working in the industry as kids. At 16, Justine got her big break when she landed the role of Mallory Keaton on Family Ties, starring alongside Michael J. Fox.
Meanwhile, Jason started even younger as James Cooper Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie at just 10 years old.

As a child actor in the 1980s, Jason Bateman showed a lot of promise before mostly dropping out of sight for several years. But thanks to Ron Howard's guidance and his memorable run on "Arrested Development," Bateman revived his career, and he has since remained a steady presence on-screen.
From supporting turns to lead roles, Bateman worked steadily and followed his passion into directing as well where he's shown the same steady hand for tone and talent behind the camera as he displays in front of it. Bateman is among Hollywood's funniest actors, a secret weapon quietly earning laughs even when he's across from more obviously comedic performers, but he's no slouch in the dramatic department either.
The result is a filmography filled with memorable, rewatchable TV shows and movies heavy on comedy but layered through with drama, thrills, and heart. In ranking his work, the focus is primarily on lead roles,...

The most important thing to note about A24's Warfare is that its co-director and co-writer Alex Garland isn't in total control of the project. Instead, he's given the other director and writer, Ray Mendoza, an opportunity to tell a fascinating true story without unnecessary adornment. In the years since he placed Natalie Portman in the irridescent sci-fi cancer allegory Annihilation (2018), Garland has grown increasingly pared to the jagged bits. Starting with 2022's Men -- whose hook is essentially, "Yes, actually, All men..." -- Garland has eschewed any fatty details that, for many, are essential in emotional engagement. The resulting spate of films are altogether colder and designed as talking points for unsuspecting viewers.
Garland loves to lob incendiary content, with varying degrees of efficacy. Civil War was much better than Men for most, largely because Garland willfully chose to remain opaque about details that would link him to a specific viewpoint.

The 70s were a great decade for surrealistic motives and imagery in genre films—including such incredible gems as Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, Louis Malle's Black Moon and Dario Argento's Suspiria. And then came another great example of surrealist cinema out of Eastern Europe in the form of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Directed by Jaromil Jires, it was a part of the Czechoslovakian New Wave, but came off as avant-garde and daring even for this pretty liberated movement. The film did face its fair share of obstacles, but ended up reaching a worldwide audience that had seen many versions of a coming-of-age story by that time. However, none of them tackled this topic like this: depicting the weird place between innocent childhood and inevitable adulthood, specifically shown through the perspective of female experience, in such an uncompromisingly surreal way.

Jason Bateman has been in the acting business since he was a child, and though he had a lot of projects as a child and teen performer, Bateman’s best movies and tv shows are all from his career as an adult. His career began with television commercials in the 1980s before he gained roles in shows like Little House on the Prairie and Silver Spoons. Though a lot of working child actors might not be able to successfully transition to more adult roles, Bateman did, and he found his niche mostly in comedic roles.
Bateman also made history when he directed episodes of The Hogan Family in the 1980s at just 18 years old. At the time, he was the youngest member of the Directors Guild of America. With a career spanning over three decades in Hollywood, Jason Bateman has become synonymous with not just acting, but also directorial roles in films and shows. But much like every other individual, even Bateman had his preference sealed in direction. This eventually led the star to feel disinterested in acting in his hit Netflix show Ozark.

Last year’s Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees included R.E.M., Steely Dan, Timbaland, and Dean Pitchford. During the induction ceremony, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Peter Buck, and Bill Berry reunited for their first performance together in 15 years.

Will Jennings, the two-time Oscar and Grammy-winning co-writer of the beloved Titanic theme, Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” has died at 80 in his Texan home, according to multiple reports. Though a cause of death was not identified, those close to the composer said he had been in declining health for a number of years.
The prolific lyricist was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the tunes “People Alone” from The Competition (1980) and “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), the latter of which he won. In 2006, Jennings was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In addition to his two Oscars, Jennings won three Grammys: “My Heart Will Go On” and “Tears in Heaven” (Song of the Year), from 1992’s Jennifer Jason Leigh-starring cop drama Rush,...

Television history is littered with failed sitcoms headlined by comedians that audiences seem to love — in the right show. Turn up in a stinker, however, and the shows are gone in a blink. Matthew Perry was great in Friends, but no one wanted Mr. Sunshine. Audiences adored McLean Stevenson in M*A*S*H but said goodbye to Hello Larry. Jon Cryer scored with Two and Half Men but was booted from his Extended Family this year.
Here are four more comedy stars who flopped multiple times while trying to get sitcoms off the ground…
1 Jason Bateman
Bateman received two well-deserved Emmy nominations for his performance as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, recognition that came decades after his breakthrough as a Tiger Beat cover boy in Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family. In between, however, he starred in several sitcom flops that lasted a year or less, including It’s Your Move...

Sadly, this gifted artist struggled with addiction and other issues. She passed away at the very young age of 27 leaving fans a powerful legacy. The 2015 documentary Amy opened up her world in wondrous ways. And now, filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson has brought her story to the big screen with a terrific performance from Marisa Abela as Winehouse. For her “unofficial” 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson had so little music to work with that the opening chord of “Hard Day’s Night” pretty much had to carry the whole movie. You might think that history would repeat for Back to Black, the short but fast-lived story of Amy Winehouse, who rose to international fame in her teens and never saw 28, never mind 30. Surprisingly, the Winehouse estate is all in, and although one might argue that the singer’s trainwreck notoriety has been slightly snow-washed to protect the living, there’s still a surprisingly hard edge here, in a rare film that gives rock ’n’ roll agency to a woman for once, like a reverse-angle Sid & Nancy.

Young Sheldon Season 7 wraps up the family-oriented prequel to The Big Bang Theory, leaving a hole in CBS' schedule that will be hard to fill.
The news that the series was ending has been heartbreaking for many reasons. Young Sheldon features sharp, snarky characters, satirizes small-town life, and offers a nostalgic look back at life in the early 1990s.
Young Sheldon is one of the last family sitcoms.
These types of shows were popular during the period that the series is set in; during the late 1980s and early '90s, there were a ton of comedies featuring families with kids, such as Family Ties, Growing Pains, the original version of The Wonder Years, The Hogan Family, and many others.

Focus Features’ Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” starring “Industry” actor Marisa Abela as the late music icon, will premiere in U.S. theaters on May 10, 2024.
According to the distributor, “‘Back to Black’ is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, ‘Back to Black.’ Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
“Fifty Shades of Grey” filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson directs the movie from a script by Matt Greenhalgh. The two previously collaborated on 2009’s “Nowhere Boy,” a John Lennon biopic starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the young Beatle.
Starring alongside Abela are Jack O’Connell (“Ferrari”), Eddie Marsan (“Fair Play”) and Lesley Manville (“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris”). Alison Owen and Debra Hayward produce via Monumental, while...

One of the earliest success stories in the history of TV is “I Love Lucy,” which enjoyed six seasons atop the ratings. When the cast was ready to slow down a bit, audiences weren’t ready to see their favorite zany redhead leave altogether, so the 30-minute sitcom was retooled as 13 one-hour specials broadcast sporadically over three seasons, under a new name: “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
In the 70 years since, many TV shows have seen name changes before airing their first episodes. One of the most notorious is ABC’s attempt to soften the title of “You Can’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23,” which was shortened to the less-offensive “Apartment 23.” However, apparently that wasn’t quite as catchy, so they compromised with “You Can’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” ahead of its April 2012 premiere.

Only a few series have changed titles midstream, as this can be confusing for viewers.

Glee's best song performances were marked by impeccable blending, stunning visuals, and great chemistry among the cast, as seen in the "Singing In The Rain/Umbrella" mashup. Naya Rivera and Amber Riley showcased their vocal prowess and created an iconic duet with their cover of "River Deep, Mountain High." Mercedes finally got her overdue solo with "And I Am Telling You," solidifying Amber Riley's talent and setting the stage for her future success.
Over its 6 seasons and 121 episodes, the Glee cast performed almost 750 songs, but 10 performances stood out among the rest. Glee first premiered on Fox in 2009 as a musical comedy-drama and told the story of a ragtag glee club, The New Directions. Led by Mr. Schuester, they attempted to not only keep the program alive but also win the biggest competition in high school show choir: Nationals. Glee ended after six seasons in 2015 with the most Billboard Hot 100 hits in history,...
