Fans of old-school 80s and 90s anime definitely have some iconic space-opera titles in their all-time favorite list, reasonably so given how series like Legend of Galactic Heroes, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Super Dimension Fortress Macross revolutionized the medium itself. Netflix’s latest release, Moonrise, an anime adaptation of Tow Ubukata’s novel of the same name, had everything it should have taken to respect the legacy of the classics of a bygone era. With an ensemble of unique characters designed by the legendary Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, Wit Studio bringing their A-game in animating some of the most breathtaking sci-fi battle sequences, handling of topical issues like the aggressive, expansive control of artificial intelligence, neocolonialism, and societal disparity, and a sweeping, memorable score fitting for the space opera genre, the anime was definitely gearing up for something special. The '90s are frequently worshipped by anime fans as a special time for the medium. The biggest franchises and most popular genres might've been different, but the quality was at an all-time high. And few years personified how great the '90s could be more than 1995.
1995 featured some of the biggest and best anime of the '90s, many of which would go on to become massive hits in the West in the early 2000s. Anime like Tenchi Universe and Gundam Wing made up the backbone of early Toonami, and that's only the beginning of what released that year. As series that aired in 1995 reach their 30th anniversary, there's no better time to look back on some of the best '90s anime.

Old school anime series like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z have more characters than many people can count, and having run so long (both of them since the late 1980s and early 1990s) they just keep racking up new characters. Some characters get lost in the mix and are forgotten. Either these characters debuted so long ago that modern fan bases don't know who they are, or they're in so few episodes that many people forget about them.
From main characters like Kamille Bidan from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam to minor characters like Bubbles from Dragon Ball Z, there are many great characters who don't deserve to be forgotten. Pets, friends, and support characters alike, there are some pretty good ones out there. Hopefully audience members now and in the future won't forget about the iconic characters that make these series so flavorful.

In modern days, anime has reached the heights of mainstream popularity as one of the cornerstones of global pop culture. From Demon Slayer to Solo Leveling, anime has been continuously producing some of the most narratively gripping and technically impressive exemplars of animation in media, the industry’s modern landscape being nothing short of awe-inspiring.
However, to find some of the medium’s most outstanding works, one has to turn their attention to the past – namely, the 1980s. The '80s have long been considered to be anime’s golden age. The anime gems of the ‘80s were largely responsible for popularizing anime worldwide, including classics like Akira and Kiki's Delivery Service that are still revered as timeless to this day. Yet, fans might be pleasantly surprised by just how many of the ‘80s history-defining anime still hold up today, their ageless appeal withstanding against the passage of time.

Macross – Shooting Insight combines classic shoot ’em up mechanics with an experimental approach to perspectives, showcasing the genre’s development and Macross’s cultural adaptability.
The game transitions between vertical, horizontal, twin-stick, and 3D sequences, a design choice that reflects the international spread of anime and video games, particularly Japanese titles that have gained global recognition.
These perspective shifts offer variety but can occasionally interrupt the gameplay rhythm, embodying the creative tension between honoring gaming traditions and exploring new directions.
The weapon systems in Macross – Shooting Insight, including spread shots, laser beams, and targeted missiles, further emphasize this dynamic. Each attack style presents unique advantages, yet the constraint of not using missile lock-ons and primary weapons simultaneously creates strategic challenges for players.
This mechanical limitation echoes the game’s narrative themes, exploring the interplay between human emotion and technological constraints—illustrating how the game intertwines traditional gameplay elements with experimental design.

At one point, mecha was the dominant genre for anime series. The genre had franchises for both children and adults, and they were constantly getting new series. One reason there were so many mecha anime is how easy the genre can sell merchandise, yet that wasn't the only reason. Some of the best anime of older eras were part of the mecha genre, making them impossible to ignore.
Even now, many of the mecha anime from the '80s, '90s, and 2000s are better than most modern anime series today. Rather than offering easy power fantasies about being the strongest or more popular, mecha anime often had far more to offer. Whether it was commentary on society or just passionate protagonists that are easy to love, it's impossible to go wrong with classic mecha anime.

In the broad pantheon of mecha anime, there's no series that's greater than Mobile Suit Gundam, which has been going strong for 40 years at this point. Beginning in the 1980s, the Macross anime franchise is one of the most iconic and influential mecha properties, right alongside the likes of Gundam. Long kept out of the West in the streaming era, many entries in the franchise are finally heading overseas in early 2025.
A new Hulu programming listing will see several Macross shows added to the streaming platform's lineup in the coming days. These include the concert compilation of videos tied to the first series, as well as the modern classic Macross Frontier. This finally ends the mecha anime's absence from the West, putting it on the same streaming service that also hosts several shows from a "rival" property.

The Macross franchise is one of the biggest mecha brands in anime, being under only Mobile Suit Gundam and perhaps neck and neck with the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Despite this, its releases are somewhat sporadic, with the 1990s some of the most traction for the brand. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of one entry in particular, though it was also a rather contentious iteration.
Macross 7 was the fourth Macross anime series, and it was also the second entry to release in the 1990s. Though the series has its fans, it's also rather disliked, namely among those in the West. Nevertheless, it might actually be perhaps the most important show in terms of keeping the property alive, thanks to one of its most notable elements: its focus on music.

Where there is rivalry, there is bound to be sportsmanship as well. This extends to the anime industry as well. Of all the mecha anime, Gundam is a cult-popular series in most aspects. From its robots to profound storytelling, the series holds relevance to this date. What’s more interesting is the creator’s approach to the rivalry.

The Sailor Moon brand is the premiere Magical Girl anime and manga franchise, with the classic 1990s anime in particular being the most well-known incarnation. It's since undergone various adaptations and remakes, including the Sailor Moon Crystal anime that told a more manga-accurate story. Amid these different iterations was another that took the property into live-action while also radically changing some of the story's elements.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was the first fully-fledged live-action Sailor Moon series, and it gave a somewhat more down-to-Earth interpretation of the story. The Macross franchise began with the original 1982 anime series, which spawned several sequels and spinoffs. Of course, there were also numerous other brands and properties spawned by this initial series. One of these was Robotech, which continues to have a somewhat controversial nature among fans of the original.
Despite its reception among some, Robotech was still a monumental series in terms of making anime more mainstream among international viewers. It also ended up developing in a wildly different direction due to the nature of the show. Since then, both Robotech and Macross have come to something of a standstill, though one of these is much healthier as a brand than the other.

Cowboy Bebop is a genre-defying classic, and it seems that one of the reasons it may have turned out the way that it is has to do with creator Shinichiro Watanabe's feelings on other Japanese media. In particular, Watanabe called out one of the most successful and influential sci-fi series to have come from Japan, Space Battleship Yamato.
While Space Battleship Yamato is pretty demonstrably less popular than Cowboy Bebop in the West, the series has long been a powerhouse in the realm of anime, particularly in its home nation of Japan. The series originally began back in 1974 and ran until 1979, from there spawning movies, follow-up series, spinoffs, and even live-action remakes. While it's not all that popular in the Western fandom, Space Battleship Yamato has been incredibly influential on later series like Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Macross, and even popularized the term "anime." Successful adaptations like "Alita: Battle Angel" and "One Piece" show that live-action anime can resonate with audiences when done right. Despite challenges, adaptations like "Death Note" and "Cowboy Bebop" fall short due to issues with casting, storytelling, and visuals.
With the rising popularity of Anime in the West, film studios have begun creating live-action adaptations to varying degrees of success. Anime streaming service Crunchyroll is adding two mecha anime to its lineup, including a series that's inadvertently tied to two other mecha classics. With both related to major multimedia franchises, these works bolster the streaming service as the go-to place to enjoy anime.
Genesis Climber Mospeada and Megaton Musashi are both heading to Crunchyroll, with the latter series coming after the release of the Megaton Musashi Wired video game. In the case of Mospeada, it's a somewhat forgotten series that's overshadowed by the franchise(s) it's tied to. Now, fans of classic and new mecha anime alike can enjoy some of the best examples of both more easily than ever.
