JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with several popular Final Girls at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California. This week, we’ve shared Ryan’s interviews with Lisa Wilcox from the Elm Street franchise, Christine Elise from the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise, and Melanie Kinnaman from Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. He also got to talk with one of the horror genre’s greatest male heroes – Ken Foree. Now, we have another interview to share that was conducted at Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend, and for this one Ryan sat down with the legendary Michael Ironside, who has racked up nearly 300 screen acting credits over the course of a career that stretches back to 1974. To hear what Ironside had to say, check out the video embedded above!

Way back in July of 2015, we heard that Matt Venne, whose credits include Masters of Horror, Fear Itself, Stephen King’s Bag of Bones, White Noise 2: The Light, Mirrors 2, and Fright Night 2 (not the ’80s one), had written an adaptation of author Carla Norton’s thriller novel The Edge of Normal on spec and landed a production deal for the script. Almost ten years went by with no updates, but the script moved on to a different production deal during that time and earlier this month it was announced that Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) is set to star in the film. Now, Deadline reports that Rupert Friend (Companion) has signed on to co-star.
The Edge of Normal will be the first English-language film from Carlota Pereda, who directed the movie Piggy. Lori Evans Taylor, whose script work includes Bed Rest, Cellar Door, and the upcoming Final Destination: Bloodlines,...

Many of our favorite Masters of Horror actually found themselves being accidentally thrust into this position after an early genre success, with very few of them actively choosing to only tell scary stories. From Stephen King to John Carpenter, there are many such cases, but I think that one of the most curious examples of a renaissance man who found himself backed into a spooky corner is that of the legendary George A. Romero.
The father of the modern zombie movie, Romero was also a deeply passionate idealist and multitalented artist with ideas spanning multiple genres. And while most of his fans focus on success of his Living Dead films (and the occasional obscure gem like Martin), today I’d like to discuss the director’s most overlooked feature, 1981’s Knightriders – a film that I think will appeal to hardcore horror fans despite featuring almost none of Romero’s penchant for exaggerated blood and guts.

Ethan Embry may only be 46 years old, but he has 35 years of acting credits to his name, having worked on more than 100 different projects. And now he’s set to cross paths with Ghostface, as Deadline reports that he has joined the cast of Scream 7!
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after.

Undoubtedly, the '90s were the peak era of YA horror books, with scary kid lit for children and teens flooding the market and terrorizing '90s kids forever. Many of the best-loved classic kids' books of the '90s were coming-of-age tales, but plenty of others were pulpy thrillers and horror stories that dove into the dark side of human nature and the supernatural. The 1980s through 1990s saw a glut of horror books aimed at teen readers, but scary books for kids also exploded in popularity, driving a horror boom in books that had previously been reserved for adults.
Unlike today, most material aimed at children didn't pull punches out of fear of traumatizing children, and that included books. Much has been made of '80s kids' movies being incredibly dark, but while the new PG-13 rating put an end to it in that same decade, books continued to deliver horror,...

Unfortunately, we recently lost an absolute legend with the passing of Tony Todd. His voice and presence are unmatched in the horror genre and has been a wonderful constant for over 30 years. Whenever an iconic actor passes, I think a great way to remember them is to look back on some of their greatest performances/movies. After all, this is their life’s work and clearly something they were very passionate about. But when it comes to Tony Todd, where do you even start?
Looking at his filmography can be overwhelming, given the sheer volume of films that the man starred in. One of the main traits of his roles is that he may hardly get any screen time in them, yet he manages to be the most intriguing character around. And while it’s not horror, I want to make sure to shout out his many wonderful TV appearances over the years,...

2005 saw the birth of a series whose time had come: Masters of Horror, a showcase for new work by the reigning kings of the genre. While they waited for new feature films, fans enjoyed hour-long tales of terror from the creators of classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Re-Animator, and many more. It was the perfect sandbox for the filmmakers who revolutionized horror in the late 20th century. However, since then, a new generation of innovators has arrived, and they need a place to play.
Horror anthologies usually operate according to a specific tone or theme, and Masters of Horror was the most ambitious of them all. The show platformed the pioneering directors who had broken new ground since the 1970s, showing more extreme sex and violence, and more profound psychological and political content. But horror has evolved yet again since 2006, and its new stars deserve a similar outlet for their achievements.

Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

John Carpenter has always been full of surprises, but it’s especially so as a septuagenarian. Through interviews, we know that the man loves video games and basketball, ideally enjoying both in the comfort of his own home. But this has extended into something we would expect most filmmakers to hate: directing remotely. But John Carpenter and remote directing got along just fine when he took on the season finale of Suburban Screams from the confines of his home.
Speaking on the Last Donut of the Night podcast, John Carpenter said that directing“Phone Stalker” was a breeze and one of the most convenient jobs he could imagine, calling the experience “fabulous. Just fabulous. I didn’t have to get up and leave the house. I could get coffee any time I wanted. I had a chair to sit in. It went great.” As far as having that necessary interaction with his cast and crew,...

Christmas and Halloween reign supreme in terms of holiday-themed horror to the point that every other holiday pales in comparison when it comes to horror offerings. Easter does have a few selections to offer, but many of them don’t lean into any familiar holiday motifs. Then there are the horror films that get lumped in simply because the villain bears likeness to the Easter bunny. It can be slim pickings. That’s okay, though, because we really only need one solid horror movie to celebrate Easter with. One that isn’t afraid to spill some Easter bunny blood.
Critters 2: The Main Course is that definitive Easter horror movie.
Co-written by David Twohy (Warlock, Pitch Black) and director Mick Garris (The Stand, Masters of Horror), Critters 2 makes clever use of the holiday as a means to implement those remaining Crite eggs stashed away in a barn from the end of Critters.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit Showtime’s “Masters of Horror,” which was created by Mick Garris and aired for two seasons between 2005 and 2007.
It seemed like a horror fan’s wet dream: a horror anthology series with some of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time lensing short format horror films for premium cable. Although horror icons had teamed in the past to bring us series like “Tales from the Darkside” and “Tales from the Crypt,” there wasn’t a modern series that brought them all together to have a chance to tell their stories in the anthology format. “Masters of Horror” seemed like a prime opportunity to re-invent the waning anthology horror format, and while it didn’t quite re-invent the wheel as planned, it brought with it a lot of great content from some bonafide horror icons.

For as long as horror movies have existed, there have been carny-like marketing campaigns boasting audience members fainting, vomiting, running out of theaters in terror, and in some of the most extreme cases, having a heart attack. Films like "Psycho," "The Exorcist," and even 2023's "Talk To Me" have all become modern urban legends with the reported reactions from fans, but few films come close to the reputation of "Antrum." The Canuxploitation film from David Amito and Michael Laicini is two films in one: a documentary about "Antrum," a lost film from the 1970s that has been connected with over 85 deaths, and the remaining footage from the only known print of the film. Before the film plays, a warning covers the screen.

The biggest names in horror, uncut and uncensored. That was the hook of Masters of Horror, the short-lived anthology series that premiered on Showtime in 2005, bringing a who's who of fright cinema — including John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, and Joe Dante — to the small screen, 60 minutes at a time.
A new scary movie by a different director every week was probably enough to get Fangoria subscribers to update their cable packages. But the truly enticing part was that none of these giants of the genre would have to water down their vision for television. In exchange for working on a tight schedule and a modest budget, each had been given complete creative control, with no limits or restrictions on the content of their episodes. It was a selling point for fans and the participating filmmakers alike.

The episode of The Black Sheep covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When did the Texas Chainsaw movies get so muddled with so many timelines? It’s not a hard thing to do. People get lost in Texas and end up victims of Leatherface and his family. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a story line or a variation on things from time to time, hell, that’s what made Freddy, Michael, and Jason so popular. You could have even done something like the legacy sequel for Halloween, at least the first one. Oh wait, you did, and it didn’t turn out well with characters that made terrible decisions and weren’t likeable in the first place? Oh yeah, I remember that one.

Legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter doesn't understand how David Gordon Green could mess up The Exorcist: Believer.
The Exorcist: Believer was Blumhouse's attempt to revive the Exorcist franchise as a legacy sequel, the first of a planned trilogy, bringing back Ellen Burstyn's Chris MacNeil, the mother of the possessed Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair). While the opening weekend promised record-breaking ticket sales for the franchise, the less-than-stellar reviews that focused on Green's mishandling of cultural appropriation have come forward and, according to The Los Angeles Times, made an impression on one of the Masters of Horror, John Carpenter.

John Carpenter watched the movie Barbie from the comfort of his home and was perplexed by it. Despite being perplexed by the film, Carpenter praised Margot Robbie's performance and called her fabulous. Carpenter's latest project, John Carpenter's Suburban Screams, is a Peacock miniseries that explores true tales of terror and marks his first television project since 2005.
John Carpenter may be the mastermind at the helm of horror favorites, including The Thing and Halloween, but Greta Gerwig's Barbie went "right over" his head. In a recent conversation with the LA Times, Carpenter shared that he watched Barbie from the comfort of his home. For those who haven't seen it yet, Carpenter also provides an intriguing synopsis of the film:
"I don't go out. I haven't been to a movie in a while, but I see them at my house. I'll see it there. I watched Barbie. I can't believe I watched Barbie.

A Nightmare on Elm Street's success can be attributed to its thought-provoking premise, skilled use of horror tropes, and a star-studded cast that helped make it one of the most engaging horror films ever. The film served as a career launching pad for its younger actors like Johnny Depp, who went on to achieve immense success in both independent and blockbuster films. The cast, including Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Ronee Blakley, and John Saxon, continued to have diverse and accomplished careers in the film industry, solidifying their status as talented actors beyond their roles in A Nightmare on Elm Street.
A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most iconic horror films ever made, and its fantastic cast has gone on to do great things since the film's release in 1984. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a defining movie in the modern horror genre, and its incredible success...

It's been 13 years since horror master John Carpenter has blessed the world with a new directorial project, but the icon behind movies like "Halloween," "Escape From New York," and "The Thing" is finally returning to our screens this autumn — with a documentary-like TV horror series. "John Carpenter's Suburban Screams" will feature six nerve-shredding true stories retold by those who experienced them, and will couple the testimony with dramatic (and decidedly scary-looking) visual retellings of the story. The show is also set to include archival footage and news clips.
Carpenter is only set to direct one of the six episodes of "Suburban Screams," but he's involved in the project in other ways, lending his considerable talents as a composer to its soundtrack and executive producing the Peacock project. The show sounds like it will meet at the intersection of reality and horror movie sensibilities, which could be the perfect recipe for some great scares.

It may be unfair to refer to filmmaker Takashi Miike as a horror filmmaker, given how prolific he is. Since he first started directing movies in 1991, Miike has accrued 112 directing credits. To save you from doing the math, that averages out to about three and a half films a year. He has made horror movies, yes, including the notable "Audition" in 1999, perhaps his best-known film in the United States. He also directed an episode of "Masters of Horror," as well as "Over Your Dead Body," the original "One Missed Call," the David Lynch-adjacent "Gozu," "Lesson of the Evil," and "As the Gods Will." His polarizing "Visitor Q" might also be considered a horror film depending on your personal interpretation of the premise.
Among those films, however, Miike has also made a superhero film, a partly animated musical, a few historical epics, coming-of-age dramas, and many, many crime movies. One...

Takashi Miike's brand of horror can be described as visceral and deeply disturbing, often verging on lurid depictions of violence and gore. While the prolific Japanese director possesses the gift to tackle a wide range of genres, Miike's horror offerings stand out for their transgressive and (subjectively) taboo subject-matters. His horror series, "Connect," is yet another grisly story that features sadistic killers and perverse truths, but also lacks the telltale gore that characterizes Miike's horror oeuvre. While Miike's "Connect" plates up unsavory themes in a palatable manner, his contribution to the anthology series "Masters of Horror," which was scheduled to air on Showtime in 2006, was ultimately shelved after being considered too extreme for American viewers.
I'm talking about Miike's "Imprint," which follows an American journalist in search of his first love, whose fate might or might not have ended up being horrifying beyond comprehension. Now, Mick Garris put together...
