Did You Know Denzel Washington’s Biggest Paycheck Came From A Movie That Flopped?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
When you think of Denzel Washington, you picture master renditions. From Training Day to The Equalizer, he delivered intensity like no other. You’d expect his biggest paycheck to come from a box-office smash, right? Turns out it didn’t. In 2021, Washington pocketed a staggering $40 million for a thriller that barely made a dent at the box office. The film? The Little Things.
It had all the makings of a hit. But it landed with a thud. Yet, Washington walked away with a career-high payday. How? It all came down to timing, agreements, and a game-changing studio judgment.
The pandemic shook up Hollywood. Studios scrambled to find new ways to release films as theaters struggled. Warner Bros. made a gutsy shift: All 2021 releases would drop simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

Filmmaker Thomas Elliott Griffiths’ documentary The Little Things will be released globally thanks to distributor Buffalo 8. More on the film below.
Derian House Children’s Hospice is at the centre of Thomas Elliott Griffiths’ new documentary, The Little Things, which has just scored a huge distribution deal with Buffalo 8. The documentary takes inspiration from producer Paul Woodward’s own experiences at the Lancashire hospice, where his son Kalel received care until his passing in 2019.
“Both Tom and I are delighted that Buffalo 8 has picked up our documentary for global distribution,” Woodward said in a press release. “The entire team at Old Swan Films worked incredibly hard to deliver a truly beautiful cinematic story. We have all taken Derian House to our hearts, and we hope audiences around the world will too. This is an opportunity for people to step inside a children’s hospice and witness what truly happens behind the walls.

2021's "The Little Things" is a fascinating little moment in cinematic history, not only because it debuted at the height of the global pandemic, but also because it was so close to being good that it almost doesn't make any sense that it wasn't. Writer/director John Lee Hancock produced a slick and stylish noir with an ending that at least tried to subvert some well-established tropes of the genre, leaving the central mystery unsolved. Denzel and his co-stars Rami Malek and Jared Leto all gave it their best, with Denzel in particular melding his undeniable charisma with a palpable sense of mournful regret. It should have been great, and yet it turned out sort of okay.
There's also the fact that this could have been the definitive Denzel crime thriller. Back in 1995, Washington almost played the role that eventually went to Brad Pitt in David Fincher's "Se7en," but...

Denzel Washington has developed a reputation as one of the greatest actors of his generation, and many of his best movies have come in the crime genre. Washington has a habit of playing different law enforcement officials, whether they are detectives, federal agents or private investigators. Often, when he takes a foray into an unfamiliar genre, like sci-fi or Westerns, he does so in a movie that still deploys many tropes and traditions of the crime genre.
Washington's best crime movies have a surprising range of genres and styles. There are more comedic and intelligent puzzles like Inside Man, as well as brutal action flicks like the Equalizer franchise. No matter what kind of character he's playing, Washington always seems to bring his A-game to the crime genre. He has even earned some awards for his performances in the crime genre.

Heath Ledger’s Joker was undoubtedly the best version of the modern psychopath in the DC universe. And thereafter, while the late actor’s hauntingly brilliant portrayal earned him an Oscar, it also led Jared Leto to suffer miserably as he dared to take on the mantle from Ledger, in 2016’s Suicide Squad.

However, following the release of the film, people were quick to judge Leto’s performance, turning him into a laughing stock. But now, amid Ayer’s promise to release a director’s cut, Leto’s comments about his role led fans to realize Warner Bros’ political move.

Denzel Washington made his feature film debut over 40 years ago in 1981’s “Carbon Copy” and in the decades since has played everyone from real-life public figures such as civil rights activist Malcolm X and wrongly imprisoned boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter to crooked cops like Alonzo in “Training Day” and Joe Deacon in “The Little Things” to even William Shakespeare‘s most famed villain, Macbeth, in “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” His latest villainous turn is for the 2024 Ridley Scott sequel “Gladiator II.”
For his prolific nature and exemplary work, Washington has received numerous awards: he snagged his first Oscar nomination for 1987’s “Cry Freedom” and won his first Oscar two years later for 1989’s “Glory.” Twelve years after that, Washington made history when “Training Day” made him the first Black actor since Sidney Poitier (“Lilies of the Field” in 1963) to win in the Best Actor category. Denzel Washington is by far one of the greatest actors of our generation, but even the best have some duds. The Little Things, released in theaters and on streaming in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, is a star-studded thriller that failed to enrapture audiences in its serial killer mystery. Featuring some head-scratching performances and a far too self-serious story, despite being so audacious, not even Washington could save The Little Things from becoming a forgotten part of the actor's recent filmography. Well, audiences can find that out for themselves before it leaves Netflix by the end of November.
The Little Things is set to leave Netflix by December 1, before it arrives back at its original streaming home, Max. The neo-noir period thriller certainly has its fans, so it is good to know that the Washington-led film will still have a place in the vast streaming world. The Little Things also...

There are only a few days left in November, and we all know what that means. Netflix is about to lose some good movies! If you're looking for what to watch on Netflix, this is the list for you.
With the month winding down, we picked the three best movies leaving Netflix in November 2024. We highly recommend watching these movies before they leave in a few days.
At the end of every month, Netflix usually loses the streaming rights to at least a handful of licensed movies. Some of these movies are the most popular movies on Netflix, but more often than not, it's older films.
Let's get the list started with Two Weeks Notice -- which you don't have to watch these movies; it's more like five days notice -- starring Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant!

“Cruel Intentions” is getting a new life in Prime Video’s TV series adaptation, which takes the twisted tale to collegiate Greek life.
Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess star as Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, respectively, step siblings who strike up a malicious deal for Lucien to seduce the VP’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who Caroline sees as her ticket to make her sorority untouchable amid backlash for a controversial hazing incident.

When it comes to powerhouse performances, few actors in Hollywood history can command the screen like Denzel Washington. Even though he has had quite a few misses in his filmography, the actor’s feats in the industry have become synonymous with gripping, multi-dimensional characters, and unforgettable roles that leave the audiences spellbound. A recent example of this is his role in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.

Denzel Washington explains why he enjoys taking on villain roles in addition to the more heroic roles he's often associated with. Washington remains one of the most respected actors working in Hollywood, and he's widely known for more heroic roles, including in such projects as The Book of Eli (2010) and The Equalizer trilogy. He's also just as well-known for playing morally-corrupted figures, however, as he did in Training Day (2001) and American Gangster (2007). He can next be seen as part of the cast of Gladiator 2, playing Macrinus, another antagonistic character.
During a recent interview with Esquire in which he breaks down his various roles, past, present, and future, Washington touches on his penchant for playing antagonist characters. The actor keeps his explanation short and sweet, explaining that the villain characters are often just more fun. Check out his comment below:

$3.8 billion. That’s the amount of money Clint Eastwood’s films have grossed at the North American box office throughout his career. A superstar since the 1960s, Eastwood is rare in that almost all of his biggest blockbusters, including all the Dirty Harry movies, were all made for Warner Bros. It’s been his home studio since about the time he made The Outlaw Josey Wales. He’s made everything from Oscar-winners to action movies, to movies where he’s chilling with his pal Clyde the Orangutan for them, and they almost always ended up at least breaking even. Sure, he’s had a few flops, but even in his golden years, he still cranked out smash hits for them, with American Sniper making over half a billion dollars, while The Mule and Sully both made over $100 million domestically. Even when his movies didn’t do well, Eastwood keeps his...

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Rami Malek in a lead role. Since he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, his biggest roles have been as a Bond villain in “No Time to Die” Denzel Washington’s LAPD partner in crime thriller “The Little Things,” and a supporting role in “Oppenheimer’s” large ensemble. None of these movies were really what you’d call Rami Malek movies. “The Amateur,” which 20th Century released a trailer for on Wednesday, is a Rami Malek movie. The espionage thriller looks to take advantage of Malek’s unique characteristics in a way nothing else quite has since “Mr. Robot.”

Gladiator II will feature Denzel Washington in a major role, continuing a trend that has defined three of the actor's best movies. Because of this, his addition to the Gladiator franchise is incredibly exciting, with Gladiator II already playing into one of the actor's biggest strengths.

Denzel Washington is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, having starred in iconic films such as Malcolm X, Philadelphia, and Remember the Titans. His roles in the aforementioned films are all heroic, admirable figures, which make it easy for the audience to root for him. Therefore, audiences usually trust Washington's characters in movies. However, while he is not typically known for playing bad characters, Washington has played villains on a few occasions.
Washginton has played villains in movies like John Q., American Gangster, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. However, one specific 2001 movie showcases Washington in his greatest villain role ever, and even earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. Throughout the course of Training Day, audiences learned not to trust Denzel Washington's character at all, as he played a corrupt detective. 23 years on, this performance remains the pinnacle of Washington's villain acting career.

Through the decades, Denzel Washington has become one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. The actor has continually redefined what it means to be a leading man and has been known for his commanding presence, and incredible talent.
However, despite the 69-year-old’s impressive range of characters across genres, the industry has seen him through a narrow lens, casting him in roles that emphasize authority, intensity, or even moral complexity.

This perception, however, was challenged by his performance in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day. In the film, Washington transformed into a seasoned but ruthlessly corrupt detective with unparalleled finesse and proved that he can’t be typecast.

A good cop movie needs a protagonist who is compelling and easy to support. Not all actors have the right style or appearance to play cops and detectives. Great actors have helped to create iconic movie detectives, including Jake Gittes and Sam Spade.
Some actors are better suited to playing cops and detectives than others, and they often appear in tons of movies playing similar characters. Dating all the way back to the film noir era, crime movies have revolved around detectives, with the biggest stars always being drawn to such roles. The series stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting for his territory and family at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness who must grapple with the unknown after discovering an unfathomable mystery on his land in the form of a dark void. The mystery deepens in the second season as Royal and his wife Cecelia struggle to keep their family together in the aftermath of their granddaughter’s sudden disappearance. Denzel Washington's 2017 film Roman J. Israel, Esq. is his only movie from the past decade to receive "rotten" scores from both critics and audiences. A veteran in the world of streaming, Netflixs catalog of films runs deep. Time and again, the platform has provided its subscribers with an array of content worthy of anyones movie night. However, as new films make their way to the streaming service, dozens of films are forced to leave. Unfortunately, numerous films are slated to vacate the platform in the coming weeks that viewers should check out before its too late.
With nearly every genre of film on the chopping block, subscribers have a long list of movies to choose from before theyre no longer available. While not every viewer will find the soon-to-be departing films appealing, theres certainly at least one worth watching before they vacate the platform next month.

Denzel Washington has played six true villains in his career, creating some of the most notorious bad guys in screen history. Characters like Tobin Frost and Joe Deacon demonstrate Washington's talent for portraying morally complex figures in films like Safe House and The Little Things. Noteworthy villainous roles like Alonzo Harris from Training Day and Frank Lucas from American Gangster have solidified Washington's reputation as a versatile actor.
While Denzel Washington is best known as a charismatic leading man, the 69-year-old superstar has build his career by taking on a multitude of different roles including some great movie villains. Compared to some actors, Denzel Washington's villain roles are relatively few and far between. Nevertheless, even though the actor has only played six true villains in his career to date, he has still made his mark as a cinematic antagonist, creating some of the most notorious bad guys in screen history.

Denzel Washington has a varied career that includes television, movies, comedies, dramas, horror, and Westerns. In spite of this, the two-time Oscar winner has never voiced a role in an animated movie. Though he could play an animated role in the future, this seems unlikely.

The actor had his breakout role in the 1980s medical drama St. Elsewhere before moving on to major feature films. He won his first Oscar in 1990 for his Glory supporting role, which he followed with a 2002 win for his lead Training Day performance. Overall, he has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including nine as an actor and one as a producer (Fences).

Netflix's Top 10 lists aren't calculated just by how many people have watched them. Poorly reviewed or critically panned films have been reaching the top of Netflix's lists, leading some people to speculate about their legitimacy. Netflix supposedly has a precise equation for the Top 10 lists, but algorithms and feedback loops are bringing us homogenized, bland 'content.'
Let's face it: Netflix is the dominant streamer. Always has been. It's gotten to the point where Hulu and Disney+ want to bundle with Max to compete. While each streamer has its specific pros and cons (we prefer The Criterion Channel for just movies), Netflix itself has become synonymous with streaming. And they generally have the best original content, as well; they produce some great stuff. But something odd has been happening in the last few years that rarely happens on other streaming platforms. Slightly older movies (generally released within the past...

Prime Video has touted the viewer response to Fallout as its second-biggest series ever worldwide over 16 days of release. In the United States (and over a shorter time period), it’s No. 1.
Fallout recorded 2.9 billion minutes of viewing time in the U.S. over its first five days, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings for April 8-14. That’s far and away the best opening for a series on the Amazon-owned Prime Video, beating Reacher’s series premiere week in early 2022 (1.84 billion minutes) by more than a billion minutes.
The series also had more than double the second-place show on the list for the week: Bluey had 1.39 billion minutes of viewing in the week leading up to and including the release of its special episode “The Sign,” which premiered on April 14.
Netflix’s unscripted series Unlocked: A Jail Experiment placed second among original series with 889 million minutes of viewing. Star Trek: Discovery...

Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance are launching foreign sales out of Cannes for the John Lee Hancock directed Monsanto starring Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell) who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. During the trial, Dr Melinda Rogers (Dern), the chief toxicologist of the Monsanto Company, testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe.
Pic’s screenplay was developed in association with Karl Spoerri’s Zurich Avenue and penned by Michael Wisner, Alexandra Duparc, Ned Benson and Hancock. Producers are Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff, Philip Schulz-Deyle and Jon Levin alongside HyperObject Industries’ Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.

After a decade and change playing superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox, Robert Downey Jr. wants to remind everyone there's more to him than Tony Stark. In the years since permanently (?) retiring his MCU alter ego in "Avengers: Endgame," the actor has lined up an ambitious slate of projects. Between getting an Oscar for his supporting role in Christopher Nolan's Best Picture-winning "Oppenheimer" and pulling a Peter Sellers by tackling multiple colorful characters in Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar's "The Sympathizer" miniseries, it's fair to say Rdj the character actor is officially back.
As chance would have it, we're now 10 years removed from the last time Downey tried (but failed) to renew his acting bonafides with "The Judge." Directed by David Dobkin, the 2014 drama stars Downey as Hank Palmer, a big-shot lawyer from Chicago who returns to his podunk hometown in Indiana to attend his mother's funeral.

The doctors were in at the top of Nielsen’s streaming ratings for the beginning of April.
Medical dramas The Resident and Grey’s Anatomy were the top two titles for the week of April 1-7, finishing with 1.18 billion and 1.15 billion minutes of viewing time (both stream on Hulu and Netflix). The Resident actually slipped a little from the previous week‘s 1.48 billion minutes, which was good for second overall, but the show that had been ahead of it — Netflix’s 3 Body Problem — fell further. The sci-fi series dropped by about 47 percent to a still solid 937 million minutes of viewing.
Disney’s animated movie Wish had its streaming premiere on April 3 and racked up 1.02 billion minutes of watch time over its first five days on Disney+. It’s the first film on Disney+ to crack the billion-minute mark since Elemental did so in September 2023. Bluey (1.08 billion minutes) also crossed the...

The children’s animated film “Wish” debuted with just over 1 billion minutes watched in its first five days of streaming on Disney+, per Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for the April 1-7 interval. Having debuted on April 3, that makes the movie the fourth-most-streamed title of the week.
The No. 1 title of the week was “The Resident,” up from No. 2 the week before when an update to Nielsen’s measurement capabilities drove the series’ chart debut. Across both Hulu and Netflix, the medical drama was watched for nearly 1.2 billion minutes from April 1 to April 7.
“Grey’s Anatomy” was the second-most-streamed title of the week with just over 1.1 billion minutes watched across both Netflix and Hulu. This was a strong viewership bump for the series, which makes the chart almost every week but typically in a lower position. “Bluey” is a constant in the top half of the chart, and made No. 3 during...
