Released this month, Moonrise, an adventure sci-fi anime, has been one of those hidden gems, sparking mixed reactions among fans. There is no denying that the animation is beautiful; the action scenes are like fireworks or something that pull you in. With such dazzling animation featuring some compelling characters, this anime has the potential to be the next big thing.
But here’s the issue- for all of that, it feels and looks kind of buried. What’s stopping Moonrise from eliciting more hype? Yeah, part of the popularity issue to consider is that Netflix didn’t promote Moonrise very well. But there’s more to the story than poor promotion.

From some questionable storytelling choices to the sheer amount of anime dropping at the same time, there are some reasons why this hidden gem of an anime isn’t shining as brightly as it should.

It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

Moonrise has all the makings of a modern sci-fi anime classic, with a brilliant aesthetic, exciting premise, and impressive visuals. Moonrise is not a project that was taken up by a subpar animation studio; it is being backed by none other than Wit Studio with series like Attack on Titan and Spy X Family under its belt.
The story was written by Tow Ubukata, of Psycho-Pass fame, and designed by Fullmetal Alchemist’s Hiromu Arakawa; it’s a carefully crafted project that took years to develop. It is not to be underestimated at all and might end up becoming a classic sci-fi anime with proper execution.

Devil May Cry ( Dmc) has created buzz on the internet for all the right reasons. The teaser, episode, and its visuals have fans going all gaga over it. And why shouldn’t it? It looks the part, and most importantly, it is a cut above the 2007 adaptation.
To be honest, not all video game adaptations are well-executed. Inaccuracy and inauthenticity are one such example where most miss the mark. Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, in this case, take the cake with their outstanding performance, and Dmc isn’t too far behind.

It won’t be delusional to include the upcoming anime in the list due to several factors. There’s hype and marketing, yes, but a key aspect puts it on par with other adaptations. This brings us to the question of the hour: What makes Arcane and Cyberpunk so good?...

While Netflix was already dominating the global streaming landscape, with its latest foray into anime, it might just become the only go-to streaming platform for any viewer. With so many live-action series (Western & Eastern) already under its belt, Netflix has been quietly building its anime arsenal, and the tide is now turning in its favor.
The question on everyone’s mind is: Can Netflix conquer the global anime streaming market while we have others like Crunchyroll and Toonami? Surprisingly, the odds seem to be in its favor because of all the Netflix-exclusive content it has.

Furthermore, shows like Dandadan are keeping Netflix’s ambitious plans alive. With the way it also dipped its hands into the anime creation landscape, the possibility of it becoming the go-to destination for otakus all over is becoming almost inevitable.

Video game-to-anime adaptations have become the new trend, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was at the forefront of it. The first season was the perfect adaptation of the video game, Cyberpunk 2077. It also ended in a manner that did not suggest a second season was coming to Netflix.
However, recent news would suggest that a new anime for Cyberpunk is in the works, hinting at a second season or a spin-off. While the latter makes more sense in the universe, is it necessary to create a new story when the ending is perfectly tragic?

The world of demon hunter Dante has finally been adapted into an animated series as Netflix’s Devil May Cry series has finally been dropped after waiting for so long. The series was one of the most anticipated video game adaptations by the streaming platform and was created by Studio Mir and Adi Shankar, who is also known for his other video game adaptation, Castlevania.
The trend of adapting a narrative from a video game into an animated series has taken center stage in the past few years. Series like Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are perfect examples of this. But the only story that ranks at the top of the list of most successful video adaptations is none other than Castlevania by Warren Ellis.

Video games are awesome; every gamer will agree with me. Whether you’re slashing away at demons in Devil May Cry or exploring the futuristic streets of Cyberpunk, gaming lets us travel to a whole new dimension with rich stories and unforgettable characters.
Do you know what else is awesome? Animated adaptations of these video games. Over the years, countless attempts have been made to adapt video games into animated and live-action series, with only a few honoring the narratives and visuals of the source material.

This has been rumored for quite a while now, and it seems it’s officially becoming true. The highly anticipated season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is reportedly under production right as we speak, and this has created much frenzy in the community.
Calling it a second season, however, may not be appropriate, or at least many people would not want it to be like that, and there’s a very profound reason why. Rather, it will be better if they make something completely new!

Anime has experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity over the past decade, transcending cultural barriers and expanding its influence worldwide. Once considered a niche form of entertainment, anime now has a huge, dedicated audience and generates billions in revenue. While high-quality animation, diverse storytelling, and global streaming platforms have all contributed to this growth, two key demographics have played a crucial role in making anime more mainstream than ever before, and those are female viewers and adult audiences.
According to grandviewresearch.com, industry trends from recent years indicate that these groups have driven revenue to new heights, shaping the type of content being produced and consumed. However, the anime boom is far from over. As content creators adapt to evolving audience preferences, a shift is expected in the coming years. Female viewers and teenage audiences are projected to be the next dominant forces in anime consumption, influencing the future of the medium.

Anime's ability to create vast, immersive worlds is one of the genre's greatest strengths. Whether grounded in history, filled with supernatural elements or set in futuristic landscapes, these series often feature layered lore that makes their stories unforgettable. The best examples carefully blend worldbuilding with complex characters, ensuring each plot point feels meaningful and contributes to the broader narrative.
Even within fantasy and adventure genres, no two anime worlds are alike. Some series craft complex political systems, while others weave rich mythologies or introduce intricate power structures. These unique approaches give each series its own identity, inviting viewers to lose themselves in detailed histories, memorable locations and ever-evolving mysteries. Netflix's next new video game anime is adding a hint of '00s metal edginess to the mix, as the newest trailer for Devil May Cry included the one Papa Roach song that even your grandma knows. Netflix has already found astounding success adapting popular video games into animated shows, with Castlevania and Arcane being two of the most celebrated video game adaptations of all time. Devil May Cry is pushing the streamer into a new genre, and that genre is nu metal.
The latest trailer for Netflix's Devil May Cry anime has Dante saying "I work better with music," before setting the trailer to one of the most iconic '00s metal songs. Papa Roach's "Last Resort" scores the demon-slaying trailer that highlights Devil May Cry's gorgeous-looking action. The anime is set to release on Netflix on April 3, 2026, and will run for 8 episodes in its first season.

The Sci-fi anime of the year has been decided as Kaiju No. 8, being one of the few sci-fi type anime to have come out and become popular. It cannot be said that Kaiju No. 8 winning the award at the 11th Anime Trending Awards was unexpected.

The only problem is that after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released, it set a high standard for what an anime adaptation should be like, and after that, Kaiju No. 8 feels underserving of being the best ‘sci-fi anime’ this year.
Good, but just not good enough
There are many genres of anime that are released every year and in recent times, the sci-fi genre is getting more diverse. With most authors mixing sci-fi with other magical or mystical tropes, it is getting harder to separate the anime into specific genres.

The Devil May Cryanime's April 3rd release date is fast approaching, and to celebrate, Netflix has released a new trailer. The trailer, published on Netflix Geeked's X account, is set to Papa Roach's Last Resort, giving the trailer a pulsing energy as Dante cuts through waves of bad guys.
It seems as if one of the series' villains is on display in the trailer, as an anthropomorphic rabbit threatens Dante with some powerful dark magic. It's sometimes a rare treat to see an anime series actually finish its story, since it's rather common for an anime to either go on hiatus or never finish the original manga's story at all. Recent anime titles, meanwhile, haven't even had a chance to finish their stories yet, such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, so anime fans end up with a lot of unfinished stories. However, there are some wonderful exceptions to that trend.
In past decades, fantastic anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood finished their stories, and more recently, other great anime titles have done the same. From 2020 to the present, fun anime series in all different genres crossed the finish line and aired their final seasons or concluded with anime movies. Anime fans can either watch these series for the first time or revisit them so they can get a complete viewing experience.

Anime deaths can be a hit or miss depending on how well the anime does it. Some deaths seem senseless and a cheap way to get rid of characters, especially when they occur at the end of an anime series. When used correctly, it can make an anime end on an amazingly memorable note.
Deaths range from gory to peaceful, but both hold the same emotional impact depending on the type of series. Deaths sometimes let the character truly express their emotions and feelings, while other deaths remain brutal and kill off a character before they're able to make their peace.

When it comes to the topic of "masterpiece" anime, the answer to what anime fits into this category truly depends on who is asked. For example, fans of the shonen anime genre might say that action-packed anime such as Demon Slayer or Attack on Titan are worthy of the masterpiece title. Meanwhile, fans of the romance genre often consider Fruits Basket or Clannad to be the best anime they have ever seen.
On Netflix, a good number of different anime are constantly being added for fans of various genres. Some of these anime are brand-new and even exclusive to the platform, while others are classics that Netflix users are now able to watch again. No matter when some of these anime first debuted, several anime on Netflix are considered life-changing masterpieces.

Video games are quickly becoming the new comic books, the source of many high-profile projects with notable talent attached both behind and in front of the camera, making it is easier than ever to get excited about a new adaptation, because the batting average has increased significantly.

It is a known fact that Castlevania stands as one of the visually stunning vampire series produced by Netflix. From its themes to its characters, it made a mark in the gothic genre. But what carried it wasn’t simply the animation and storytelling but a move that eventually worked in its favor.

What could be more enticing than a game of Clue set in the elusive White House? The premise for the latest murder mystery from Netflix is simple: 132 rooms, 157 suspects, one dead body, and one eccentric detective. From producer Shonda Rhimes comes an eight-episode comedic murder mystery series starring Orange is the New Black's Uzo Aduba along with Marvel favorites Randall Park and Giancarlo Esposito. In preparation for the March 20 release, Netflix has released the trailer for The Residence, and it looks like a good old-fashioned whodunnit.
Home of the modern murder mystery Knives Out, which arguably brought the genre back to the mainstream, Netflix is expanding its mystery portfolio with the upcoming miniseries based on the novel The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower. The comedic mystery thriller is produced by TV dynamo Rhimes, who has made more hit shows than one person can count.

Artificial Intelligence is gaining an increased presence in the world of anime and manga localization. While many believe that its usage poses an existential threat to the existence of translation jobs, others, such as official Kaiju No. 8 translator David Evelyn, feel that AI is threatening worker livelihoods in other, equally problematic ways.
In a recent interview conducted by Gizmodo, David Evelyn joined fellow manga translation veterans Stephen Paul and Casey Loe to discuss various issues related to the industry. Evelyn focused heavily on the topic of AI and how publishers are increasingly looking to AI-powered tools like Novelous to speedily generate translated manga and light novel content for the masses. However, Evelyn does not believe that AI is a practical replacement for human staff. "Translation is way more complicated than 'source language A' into 'target language B.' The following contains spoilers for Sakamoto Days Season 1, Episode 1, "The Legendary Hit Man," now streaming on Netflix.
When it comes to having a wide range of anime content, Netflix is definitely stepping up its game and its diversity. Some of the best Netflix original anime content include heavy hitters like Tekken: Bloodlines, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Dota: Dragon's Blood. But there are comedic properties also being adapted.
Finally, fans of Sakamoto Days can bask in the first episode. This anime deals with Taro Sakamoto, a retired hitman who just wants to enjoy some peace and quiet. A mundane life is something he welcomes after years of killing. This brings up a major parallel to Keanu Reeves' portrayal of John Wick. There, Reeves' assassin wanted a life away from death, too. Interestingly, Taro's journey actually improves on one major aspect regarding John's life after its debut, making Taro more layered.

Not all anime need more than twelve episodes to tell a story. Some, despite their short length, manage to portray beautiful stories of any genre with limited episode counts. These anime prove that it's not the number of episodes that matters, but rather the quality of these episodes.
Nearly all anime genres have at least a few series where there are only twelve episodes. Even so, the series' characters can still experience layered growth and development, while the plot naturally progresses and culminates in a satisfying ending. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an original anime series inspired by the video game, Cyberpunk 2077. The series explores a world that has fallen into dystopian conditions, filled with nothing but crime, danger, and fighting. While Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is praised for its world-building and character development, its epilogue falls into a clichéd rom-com anime trope, that fans often overlook.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners‘ Heartbreaking End Mirrors a Worn-Out Anime Trope
Over the years, Japanese animation has created several romantic stories. Some romance anime are emotional dramas filled with tears and angst, while others are lighthearted rom-coms that show fans how enjoyable love can be.
