It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Moonrise has all the makings of a modern sci-fi anime classic, with a brilliant aesthetic, exciting premise, and impressive visuals. Moonrise is not a project that was taken up by a subpar animation studio; it is being backed by none other than Wit Studio with series like Attack on Titan and Spy X Family under its belt.

The story was written by Tow Ubukata, of Psycho-Pass fame, and designed by Fullmetal Alchemist’s Hiromu Arakawa; it’s a carefully crafted project that took years to develop. It is not to be underestimated at all and might end up becoming a classic sci-fi anime with proper execution.

Virgil is one of the series' most important characters, so while his inclusion in the anime was a foregone conclusion, it is still glorious seeing him appear in the new trailer.

It's sometimes a rare treat to see an anime series actually finish its story, since it's rather common for an anime to either go on hiatus or never finish the original manga's story at all. Recent anime titles, meanwhile, haven't even had a chance to finish their stories yet, such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, so anime fans end up with a lot of unfinished stories. Not all anime need more than twelve episodes to tell a story. Some, despite their short length, manage to portray beautiful stories of any genre with limited episode counts. These anime prove that it's not the number of episodes that matters, but rather the quality of these episodes.

Nearly all anime genres have at least a few series where there are only twelve episodes. Even so, the series' characters can still experience layered growth and development, while the plot naturally progresses and culminates in a satisfying ending. A few anime may have sequel seasons on the horizon, but for the time being, these are accomplished anime with only a dozen episodes to their names.
