April's Blu-ray and DVD releases are kicking off in a big way, as we have a lot of great genre releases to get excited for this week. Mike Mendez’s Don’t Kill It arrives on both formats April 4th as well as the cult classic Invasion of the Bee Girls, which makes its HD bow courtesy of Scream Factory. Mill Creek has put together a triple dose of terror with their Psycho Circus Triple Feature Blu-ray set, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is keeping busy with their releases of Ghost of New Orleans, A Room to Die For, and We Go On this Tuesday.

Other notable home entertainment titles arriving this Tuesday include The Evil Within, Tank 432, Don’t Hang Up and the DVD set for Medium: The Complete Series.

Inefficiency. It’s a criticism often levelled at the BBC by a certain species of rapacious vulture who sees the corporation not as the lustrous national gem it is, but as an unjust barrier to the extent to which they’re able to feather their own nests. The BBC is full of waste, they caw. The BBC must be more efficient!

If any of the vultures had the nous to watch BBC Two at 10pm on a Tuesday night for the past few weeks, they’d have been delighted. Well, not delighted.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

The Lego Batman Movie won the weekend as expected, but not with nearly as much money as I had predicted, not besting the opening of The Lego Movie as expected, but instead ending up with a reasonable and not so bad $53 million. Fifty Shades Darker proved that the audience for movies based on the popular books was still great enough for it to win Friday with $21 million (to Lego Batman’s $15 million) and end up second for the weekend with a strong $46.6 million. That was still almost $40 million less than the opening of the previous movie Fifty Shades of Grey, but the sequel also didn’t have the benefits of Valentine’s Day and a four-day holiday. Coming in...

No one is safe in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Chris von Hoffmann’s upcoming “Drifter.” Seriously, no one. In von Hoffmann’s first feature film, two brothers find themselves crossing paths with a family of psychotic cannibals when they get stuck in a desolate town at the end of the world. Relatable.

In our exclusive clip, things are appropriately mysterious and terrifying as Vijah (Monique Rosario) is forced by the head cannibal in charge, Latos (Anthony Ficco), to tie Miles (Aria Emory) down to a couch and then watch, terrified, as his brother is thrown in the middle of what looks to be a large dirt circle made of garbage. They’re both bruised and bloodied, and von Hoffmann doesn’t make it easy on the audience by cutting away, but...

The last time we checked in with Thor, the hammer-wielding hero helpfully answered the question on everyone’s mind: While we know the rest of his Avengers team was battling it out in “Captain America: Civil War,” what was the Asgardian God of thunder up to? In a short released last summer called “While You Were Fighting: A Thor Mockumentary,” directed by Taika Waititi, who is also at the helm of the upcoming “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor invited the world into his new home in Australia where he lives with his long-suffering roommate Darryl. He dubbed them Team Thor, and thus a new iconic Marvel duo was born.

Now, a follow-up to the short has been released, along with the promise of more of Thor’s Earthly adventures on the Blu-ray edition of McU entry “Doctor Strange,” which hits shelves on February 28.

Even a master swordsman isn’t safe when it comes to Derek Yee’s wild wuxia adventure, appropriately titled “Sword Master.” In the new martial arts extravaganza, a once-powerful swordsman turns his back on his own violent nature and formidable talents to live a quiet and humble life away from the world. It’s the kind of great and understandable pursuit that is, of course, totally thrown for a loop by outside forces.

Per the film’s official synopsis, “A powerful swordsman is haunted by the destructive impact his deadly talents have on others. Weary of the bloodshed and violence from the martial arts world, he banishes himself to the humble life of a vagrant, wandering the fringes of society. But his violent past refuses to let him go quietly.

“Ghost of New Orleans,” written by Gerald Dipego and Justin Dipego, offers up a New Orleans-set thriller with a supernatural twist. Directed by Predrag Antonijevic (“Savior”), the film stars Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard, Lake Bell, Sharon Leal and Cary Elwes.

As the film’s official synopsis states, the film follows “a disgraced detective (Josh Lucas) [who] has a supernatural encounter which leads him to investigate the murder of a beautiful cellist (Lake Bell) that unlocks the truth behind her mysterious death.” Creepy.

On the surface, Rafael Kapelinski’s feature debut “Butterfly Kisses” looks to fit neatly into a certain subset of angsty teen dramas set against the backdrop of London’s drab housing estates, but something far darker — and, admittedly, much more complicated — looms just below the surface of the filmmaker’s dramatic offering.

“Butterfly Kisses” premiered last week at the Berlinale and stars a young and up-and-coming British cast, including Theo Stevenson (“Humans”), Rosie Day (“Outlander”) and Thomas Turgoose (“This is England”). The film was shot entirely in black and white, and it appears to earn all the moodiness that such a style implies.

Later this week, Predrag Antonijevic's Ghost of New Orleans will be released theatrically and on several other platforms like VOD and Digital HD. In it, two cops use an abandoned house as a stake-out location, only to be contacted by the ghost of a woman who was murdered there, urging them on to solve her crime as well. It sounds like an interesting premise, and with a castlist including Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard, Lake Bell and Cary Elwes you'd suspect it would have been a bit quicker to get to the screen, seeing as how its shoot had finished in 2010 already (and its world premiere was in 2011). Ah well, producers run into problems sometimes, and judging by some Very angry on-line comments, these...

You can usually smell a troubled production coming from a mile away, and in the case of “Ghost Of New Orleans” (formerly known as “Little Murder“) that stench is pretty powerful. It was shot all the way back in 2010, and at the time, the folks behind the movie were already being accused of stiffing people on their bills. Now, seven years later, it’s coming to theatres via Sp Distribution (who?) in association with financial company Tax Credit Finance LLC, which I can only surmise was involved in the movie, and wound up owning part of it along the way.

Well, we’ve made it to another month, which means we have a bunch of new VOD releases to look forward to throughout February. If you are looking to escape the winter doldrums while keeping safe and snug on your couches, you have plenty of horror and sci-fi titles arriving digitally in the coming weeks to keep you busy and out of the brutal winter chill.

February’s VOD offerings kick off with Katee Sackhoff in Don’t Knock Twice from IFC Midnight, and for those of you with Dish services, the psychological thriller Lavender makes its bow on that platform beginning February 3rd. The Oscar-nominated Nocturnal Animals arrives on Digital HD on February 7th, the very same day that Stake Land II gets released courtesy of Dark Sky Films.

Optimum Releasing have sent over the official UK trailer for horror-thriller Mother’s Day, a remake of Charles Kaufman’s acclaimed original.

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, Mother’s Day stars Rebecca De Mornay (Risky Business), Deborah Ann Woll (Little Murder), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Lisa Marcos (The Listener) and Jaime King (Sin City).

The new owners and their guests, gathered for an ill-timed birthday party, become the brothers’ unwitting hostages. Their mother and sister arrive, and it soon becomes obvious that Mother will do absolutely anything to protect her children. In one terrifying evening, Mother brilliantly takes control of the situation and masterminds her sons’ escape. Sides will be taken, secrets revealed, and sins punished as the hostages struggle to make it through the night.

Mother’s Day is scheduled to hit UK cinemas on June 10th.

Mother's Day is a remake of the 1980 Troma Team Video release. Mother's Day which finished filming in 2009, has had a lengthy post production in which the film was re-edited over and over. Deep in the heart of downtown Detroit, director Predrag “Gaga” Antonijevic is conjuring up a slice of the South. The much-lauded Serbian filmmaker is lensing the supernatural thriller Little Murder, his second English-language movie, in the Motor City despite the fact that it’s set in New Orleans, post-Katrina.

Antonijevic and co. are bringing to life the story of an alcoholic cop (Josh Lucas from Session 9 and the upcoming Tell Tale, seen in the exclusive pics here) who is observing a suspect (Iron Man’s Terrence Howard) from a house inhabited by the ghost of a murdered cellist (Lake Bell of TV’s Surface and Boston Legal). “It’s not an obvious plot,” Bell tells Fango, “but a strange little movie where every day that goes by, I learn more about what, tonally, we’re making. Two more stars will be joining the already announced Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard, and Lake Bell in Peter "Gaga" Antonijevic's upcoming thriller Little Murder. What? Don't be that way; we already know you're excited.

Variety reports that Cary Elwes (Saw) and Sharon Leal (Dreamgirls) are set to co-star in the indie thriller that is currently lensing in Detroit.

Little Murder, penned by Gerald Di Pego (The Forgotten, Phenomenon) and Justin Di Pego, is set in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and centers on a disgraced detective (Lucas) who gets an unexpected shot at redemption when the ghost of a beautiful cellist solicits his help in finding her killer.

Leal will play the friend of the murdered cellist, Elwes the country club owner who may have played a part in the crime.

Variety reports that Cary Elwes (Saw) and Sharon Leal are joining cast members Josh Lucas and Terrence Howard in the indie thriller Little Murder , currently shooting in Detroit. Lucas plays a disgraced New Orleans police detective who gets a shot at redemption when the ghost of a beautiful cellist solicits his help in finding her killer. Leal will play the friend of the murdered cellist, Elwes the country club owner who may have played a part in the crime. Predrag Antonijevic is directing from a screenplay by Justin and Gerald Di Pego. More when we hear it!

Indie financiers 120dB Films and Tax Credit Finance have merged to form the 120dB Films Tax Finance, with plans to place and fund credits on aggregate production budgets of more than $300 million in 2010.

The new entity's managing partners will be Stephen Hays and Peter Graham, who founded 120dB in 2004, and Anthony Gudas, who managed Tcf.

120dB has served as a senior lender to indie films and TV, providing gap, presale, tax credit, finishing funds, prints and advertising as well as bridge financing for more than 40 films and TV series. Tcf has overseen more than $300 million in project financing since its formation in 2002.

120dB and Tcf also have worked together on such productions as TNT's "Leverage," Robert Rodriguez's feature "Machete" and the Josh Lucas-Terrence Howard starrer "Little Murder."

120dB Films Tax Finance expects to incorporate in Iowa and register in several other states where there is tax-credit demand.

Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard and Lake Bell will be joined by Bokeem Woodbine, Peter Jason, Noah Bean and Deborah Ann Woll in Little Murder . Deborah Ann Woll is one busy young woman. Along with her recurring role in HBO's "True Blood" and an upcoming part in Darren Bousman's Mother's Day redux, she has joined the cast of Peter "Gaga" Antonijevic's supernatural thriller Little Murder. The script was penned by father-son duo Gerald and Justin Di Pego.

Joining Woll and the previously announced Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard, and Lake Bell are Bokeem Woodbine (The Rock), Peter Jason ("Deadwood"), and Noah Bean ("Damages").
