The nominations won’t be announced till January 9, but the Art Directors Guild has found a host for its 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Actress Rachael Harris will command the stage for the February 15 ceremony at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
“I am honored to host the Adg Awards this year,” Harris said in a statement. “Production designers and their teams are the unsung heroes of film and television, creating the worlds we inhabit on screen. Their artistry and craftsmanship inspire me and I’m delighted to celebrate their incredible work.”
Harris most recently starred in Season 1 of Disney+’s “Goosebumps,” but you’ve seen her in everything from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Modern Family,” “Suits,” “Happy Endings,” and as a series regular on “Lucifer.” Harris’ film credits include “The Hangover,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” trilogy, “Best in Show,” and “Natural Selection.

The funniest thing to come out of Joe Rogan’s new Netflix special is the social media mocking it, but don’t kid yourself: CEO Ted Sarandos benefits from that, too.
Rogan, a 56-year-old podcaster, has been called a lot of things since “Burn the Boats” streamed live on August 3. According to his critics on X, he’s “unfunny,” “a bigot,” “the dumbest man on the planet,” “like if Charlie Brown grew up, did steroids, finished balding, and never went to therapy,” “a lapdog for billionaires,” “adult Caillou,” “proof that those D.A.R.E. videos about the dangers of weed might have made some valid points,” and “the Cybertruck of comedians.”
The progressive pile-on is objectively funny and, at first glance, looks like a welcome counterbalance to the millions of Rogan fans who make “The Joe Rogan Experience” the world’s biggest podcast. In the special, Rogan aggressively mocks the LGBTQ community,...

Well, that didn’t take long. In the first 10 seconds of the trailer for Matt Rife’s new Netflix special, Lucid, the comic lets the audience know that it will have to hold up its end of the bargain. “This is just me and you guys. I don’t know what you or I will say,” he declares, setting up the hour to come. “I want you to be aware you are equally as at fault for how this goes as I am.”
If the new special tanks, in other words, we now know where to point the finger. Rife isn’t exactly Mr. Take Responsibility. When he outraged viewers in his last special with jokes about domestic violence, he suggested special-needs helmets for anyone with hurt feelings. After all, he reasoned, “I didn’t hit anybody.”
To be fair to Rife, Lucid does require a lot of audience participation.

For a full hour at The Comedy Zone in Charlotte, North Carolina, Matt Rife relied solely on his audience to keep his show afloat. During his sold-out Hollywood Bowl show on Wednesday, Matt Rife nodded to his controversial 2023 Netflix special, which sparked ire due to a joke about domestic violence.
He broached the subject during a nearly 90-minute set featuring jokes about drugs, old people and insomnia. At one point, the 28-year-old comedian smoked a joint with a 68-year-old woman in the crowd. Much of Rife’s stand-up set revolved around what types of jokes are “Ok” and “not Ok” to say, especially in front of a Los Angeles crowd.
After making a few jokes about transgender people, Rife quipped, “What am I gonna do? Get canceled? Cool, I’ll do another Bowl show, awesome.”
He went on, “You know that’s not a real punishment… nothing happens. Prison’s a punishment.”
Rife then dove into several prison jokes and addressed his controversial domestic violence joke head-on. He went into a crowd work segment...

Exclusive: Rising comedian Paul Elia has set a Christmas Eve premiere date for his debut special, Detroit Player, the first ever shot at the Detroit House of Comedy, which came together over the course of three October tapings. Directed by Elia’s longtime friend Dan Ringey, with whom he previously collaborated on the indie crime thriller Dirty, the special will be available for a month on Mint Comedy.
Elia came to shoot his special after spending years performing stand-up in many unlikely (and awkward) scenarios, in order to pay his rent. He performed in a Dubai mall (and almost got arrested). Soon after, he performed at a private event for Saudi royalty. With Detroit Player, he explores authenticity, censorship and what it means to “hustle” (while avoiding arrests abroad).
Hailing from The LowKey Company & Avesta Entertainment, the special is produced by Bassem Youssef, Azhar Usman and Danny Mooney.

Comedian Matt Rife has ignited controversy with his Netflix special “Natural Selection,” which launched Nov. 15 on the streaming service. The special kicks off with a joke about domestic violence. In what appeared to be an apology posted to his Instagram story, Rife directed anyone offended by his jokes to a link that led them to a website for special needs helmets.
At the beginning of Rife’s “Natural Selection,” he tells a story about being in a “ratchet” Baltimore restaurant with a friend and noticing their female server has a black eye. They wonder why the restaurant wouldn’t have the server work solely in the kitchen so that customers wouldn’t see her black eye. Rife jokes, “Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.”

After self-releasing three specials and amassing more than 17 million TikTok fans, Matt Rife is beyond gratified to have scored a Netflix special. “You work your entire career to feel accepted by a network standard,” Rife tells Variety, noting it was both arduous and creatively fulfilling to produce his YouTube specials — “Only Fans,” “Matthew Steven Rife” and “Walking Red Flag.”
Rife made his television debut on MTV’s “Wild ’n Out” and has had guest appearances on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Fresh off the Boat.” He’s currently in the middle of his sold-out ProbleMATTic World Tour.
“Natural Selection,” shot at Dar Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., hits Netflix on Nov. 15. In typical Rife fashion, the comic does not hold back while discussing social media trolls, his fear of the dark and discovering his dad’s porn.
Congrats on getting a Netflix special. That’s a huge accomplishment after putting together all of your previous specials.

If the film and television industries have been challenged like never before in a year of double strikes, in the world of comedy, the story is very different.
In truth, stand-up has never been bigger, with one story after another rolling out of comedians setting records for attendance and viewership. Take Nate Bargatze, for example, who earlier this year set an Amazon streaming record with his special Hello World, before going on to sell a record number of tickets to an April show at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and bringing SNL its highest-rated episode of the season. Or Matt Rife, a young up-and-comer with 10+ years under his belt, who hit the upper echelons of comedy seemingly overnight after blowing up on TikTok, selling out a global tour encompassing some 600,000 tickets in less than 48 hours, before going on to land his own forthcoming Netflix special, Matt Rife: Natural Selection. Read More: Listen to Dominic Monaghan in Larry Fessenden's Ecological Thriller 'Natural Selection' The story for "Guttermouth" involves a man who hears voices coming from a drain. What inspired this premise? I don't really know how to explain this, but I've always been terrified of drains. Not terrified like I don't want to take a bath, but ever since I was little, I remember thinking how weird it is that all the water we use just goes down these pipes to some place underground. Stare at the sink for a while and your imagination wanders... What tradition would you place this story in? On the one hand, it's got a creepy supernatural tone; at the same time, it's more of a psychological thriller. I would put this in the relationship drama department. What is really at play here is a failing relationship and that is something we can all relate to,...

For the next several weeks, Indiewire is exclusively premiering new episodes from the third season of "Tales From Beyond the Pale," the audio play series produced by Glass Eye Pix. Listen to the episode above, and read interviews with Fessenden and Monaghan conducted by Indiewire's Eric Kohn about the inspiration for the episode below. The episode is inspired by the show "Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan." When did you discover the show and how did you get Dominic onboard to play the lead role? I worked with Dom on Glenn McQuaid's movie "I Sell the Dead" and we've always stayed in touch, so naturally when his show came on, I tuned in. Chris Peckover’s Sydney-set home invasion thriller to shoot early 2016.
Levi Miller, the young star of Pan, is joining Olivia DeJonge in Chris Peckover’s Sydney suburbia-set thriller Safe Neighborhood about a babysitting gig that takes a terrifying turn.
Miller will play a 12-year-old boy with a devious side, with DeJonge as a babysitter battling to protect her young charge in a home invasion with a surprising twist.
The film, which Peckover co-wrote with Zack Kahn, is due to shoot in Australia in January 2016. “Safe Neighborhood is Home Alone meets Scream,” said producer Brett Thornquest of Australian Storm Vision Entertainment, which is producing the film alongside Los Angeles-based Best Medicine Productions.
“Chris and Zack have written a killer script and this film will be equally smart and stylish, scary and tense - a sure-fire white-knuckle ride that pushes the thriller genre in a whole new terrifying direction.

A few years ago Oren Uziel wrote a script called The Kitchen Sink, a horror-sci-fi-comedy mashup that combined vampires, zombies, and aliens and had Jonah Hill attached to direct until he landed himself an Academy Award nomination and exited the project as fast as he could. Sony then tapped Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection) to direct the picture instead, and now years later, it’s finally set for a release under a new title. Fans of horror comedy might be interested in Freaks of Nature, a bizarre mishmash of Monster Squad and Zombieland, about a small American town that gets caught in a war between the undead.
Starring Nicholas Braun, Mackenzie Davis, Ed Westwick, Vanessa Hudgens, Keegan-Michael Key, Joan Cusack, Bob Odenkirk, Denis Leary, and Cerina Vincent, Freaks of Nature opens just in time for Halloween on October 30th. Watch the trailer below.

One of our favorite indie dramas of the last few years is Natural Selection, a small-scale project that premiered at SXSW. Four years later, director Robbie Pickering is now back with his follow-up, this time going the Hollywood route with Sony Pictures’ genre mash-up Freaks of Nature, previously titled The Kitchen Sink.
Having begun production well over two years, after a few delays, it’s now set to land in two short weeks with a cast featuring Mackenzie Davis, Ed Westwick, Vanessa Hudgens, Keegan-Michael Key, Joan Cusack, Bob Odenkirk, Denis Leary, Cerina Vincent, and Patton Oswalt. When one sets up vampires, humans and zombies to fight each other, it’ll certainly be chaotic but this looks a bit tonally all over the place. We’ll find out if it’s worth seeing soon, and in the meantime, one can find the trailer below.

Spirit of the Wasp’s Nest: Diez’s Debut a Schlocky Creature Feature

Their aggressive cousins, mutant wasps, get a chance at bat in Stung, the directorial debut of Benni Diez. The curtain has come down on another season of AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead, giving fans until October to mull over what they’ve witnessed during Season 5.
In the show’s new world created by the zombie apocalypse, there are only two guarantees: death and blood. And Season 5 offered more than enough of both.
The group took some big casualties over the last 16 episodes, but soldiered on, and were transformed from cattle ready for the slaughter into a battle-hardened unit, protected by their very own four walls.
Natural selection looks to be slowly weeding out the weakest members left in the world, as the physical and psychological effects of being in the wild so long have taken their toll, meaning that Rick and the gang’s enemies are becoming increasingly savage.

Orphan Black, the BBC America show about a group of really hot clones, begins its second season on April 19. It’s a fun show, and if you didn’t watch the first season (which you can, for free, if you're an Amazon Prime member), there is still plenty of time to catch up — ten days, actually, which works out to exactly one episode a day. One hour a day! You can do this. Here is a catch-up guide — with discussion points — to keep you company. Today, April 9: Episode One, “Natural Selection”If you have agreed to watch Orphan Black, then you are presumably aware of its premise (and also we just spoiled it in the intro). So yes, this is a show about clones — but our main clone Sarah Manning initially has no idea about her origins, which means that the pilot episode is mostly Sarah looking confused...

During his appearance on Dread Central Live, Leprechaun franchise creator Mark Jones (Scorned) talked a bit about his next horror project, Vamprechaun, and now he wants You to help deliver the goods!
"I actually have a new horror franchise that I came up with, and it actually may involve Warwick Davis," Jones told co-hosts Staci Layne Wilson and Vanessa "Gore Whore" Gomez during the broadcast. "In it a vampire bites a Leprechaun, creating a Vamprechaun."
"So now you have this little vampire, completely different character, completely different prosthetics design... Being that he's little, he'll be biting your ankles instead of your neck because he can't reach it, and he gets all these women... It will be comedy-horror of course, and we're in talks now trying to put that together. 1.3 Variation Under Nature
Last week’s episodes showed that Orphan Black had the potential to be an interesting, contemporary take on cloning. Although very little was given away in terms of where and what these clones were, and more importantly, why they were being killed, the opening two-parter was a skilfully balanced story of a street smart woman fighting to break away from her past set against a background of mystery and intrigue. It was a strong start, and therefore there was a natural fear that once the season had started proper there would be a decline in quality. It was therefore a relief to see that Variation under Nature resolves some small issues, adds some pace into the story and...

1.1 Natural Selection & 1.2 Instinct
After achieving its first run in the States in the spring, and having already been commissioned for a second series by BBC America, Orphan Black finally gets aired for British audiences courtesy of BBC Three. Deciding to open with the first two episodes is a wise move as its first episode, albeit interesting in concept, at times lacks pace and needs longer to develop its themes so that viewers will want to come back for a second week. However, it’s worth noting that this is not an edge-of-your-seat, action-orientated science fiction show, but for me, that’s just fine and I’ll explain why.

Over two years ago, it was thought that Jonah Hill would make his directorial debut with a genre mash-up called Kitchen Sink. Instead, it will be Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection) at the helm of the story which takes place in Dilford, a town where vampires are at the top of the social order, zombies are at the bottom, and the humans were in the middle. But this order is thrown into upheaval as an alien race begins to invade, and a high school-aged vampire, zombie and human as have to try to save their town. Basically the coming-of-age tale has everything but the kitchen sink, and that's where the title comes from. Now comedians Patton Oswalt and Bob Odenkirk have joined the cast of the interesting film.
